My sincerest apologies for this, but I am at the end of my tether and I doubt /jp/, being dominated with male otaku, will help. I figure that due to the goregous and lavish costume design of the Takarazuka Revue, SOMEONE on /cgl/ must know a thing or two, right?

I recently got into Takarazuka. Unfortunately my Japanese is not the best so I've been looking for English subtitles of shows. I fortunately found the TIP, but I wanted to ask about takarazuka.blogspot.com. It seems that it was a great place to find subbed shows, but it's been taken down, along with all their upload links. I was wondering if there was a new place I could find these subtitled shows. Is there a new site I have yet to come across? I can't find anything on torrent sites either.

In return for my intrusion, I will post pictures of these beautiful actresses and their clothes. I can only hope they inspire you.

As for finding good subbed recordings online, there's not many. Russian community is strong though and there's a huge catalog of recordings on VK. Group is called Takarazuka Kagekidan.

TACOBAZOOKA YOU SAY??

agree that there's not much subbed out there....there is a tumblr that's releasing just translated text of songs and things, which could be useful to read before watching (like us oldfags had to do in the days before anime fansubs)....they also did a full sub of the 2010 scarlet pimpernel, but it's a .ass file, not embedded subs, so you need the vid file.
>zukalations.tumblr.com

through the years, i've found a few random raw shows via torrent also, if you look around. i have a wao youka/hanafusa mari POTO and an older elisabeth. fair warning, quality is not always the best, especially for older shows. a few unsubbed random shows and revues were available through a fan dvd distribution group called curious violet (also did jdrama dvds)....no idea if they're still active though.

as a side note, takarazuka loves to do shows that were originally done elsewhere (kopit's POTO, elisabeth, and pimpernel being the most obvious of these)....so sometimes you can listen/watch the show in the native language first to figure out wtf it's about, then watch the japanese version.

also throwing in my marie antoinette costume for fun.

Okay 'Zuka fans - Let's settle this once and for all. What was your favourite production of Elizabeth and why?

The Moon troupe 2005 version is just so wonderful to me. I LOVE all of Ayaki Nao's facial expressions and body language as Der Tod. She makes the character so mysterious, aloof and enticing, with the edge of danger. You really understand how Elizabeth could be drawn to this Death and frightened at the same time.

Sena Jun is also fantastic as Elizabeth - She brings a tomboyish innocence to the role that other actresses haven't quite captured, and I love her singing voice.

I also love Luchini's voice and character in this production as well.

>> No.8905390

>>8904766
YES YES YES THANK YOU. I hear people constantly jacking off to Mizu and Sena's performances being the most superior, but they pale in comparison to the depth of character that Nao achieves as Death. And her vocal capacity! Yes, please, YES!!!

Yeah, unfortunately I can't really get into any performance that doesn't have Nao as Death now. She defines the character for me.

So err, anyone make any progress on finding subbed shows that aren't included in the TI Project? (omg thank you so much TI project for all your hard work seriously) I tried to use zukalation's subbed files of the 2010 Scarlet Pimpernel with the copy that I have, but unfortunately the subs don't sync up at all.

Does anyone know where I can find a copy of the play that actually syncs with these subs?

I think it depends on what your looking for in Tod's caracter. The Wittlesback(Sisi's) family did have some prior case of melancholia and her first loss was at a very young age, her attraction for death could only grown as the years passed away.I think that at some point in her life she found it comforting and her death themed poems unfortunatly aren't that innocent...

Unfortunatly the Snow troupe 2007 vers. is my favorite cast, Otozuki Kei's Lucheni is crazy and broken, Teru's Rodolphe is simply gold,Mirai Yuuki's Sophie is wonderful, she got the roughness of her personality, Ayabuki Mao's Franz is a loving husband confused as he should be and Tonami's Sisi is simply stunning. ( well for me at least hahahaha) MizuTod made me fall head over heels for her so my point of view might be biased at this point.~

>> No.8905927

>>8905733
Can't argue with Kei's or Mao's performances. They're actually my favorite renditions of Lucheni and Franz, despite Moon 2005 being my favorite overall production. If only Nao could play alongside Kei. That would be something really incredible, I think.

Hamlet!! is wonderful. Get it and you're in for a treat, unless you much prefer stuffy non-musical productions from the Royal Shakespeare Company.

For an elaborate rock opera in which all the male characters are dressed as Visual Kei stars and female characters are dressed like 1950s rockabilly, it's surprisingly faithful to the source material. Unsuprisingly, it is now the favourite production of Hamlet I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of Shakespeare in my time.

Yes, Takarazuka is that thing referenced in:

Mawaru Penguindrum,
Only Yesterday,
Kimagure Orange Road,
Sakura Taisen,
Lucky Star,
Wandering Son,
Anpanman,
...and any other piece of Japanese media that features a glamorous over-dramatic all-female theatre production.

While we're at it, Takarazuka has famously influenced the works of:
Osamu Tezuka
Riyoko Ikeda
Naoko Takeuchi
Kunihiko Ikuhara
Yōji Enokido
and way, way more than I can possibly list.

Do people have a favourite song from Elisabeth? Yami ga hirogaru's mine at the moment (still working through a full version of Elisabeth I found unsubbed). From Romeo and Juliet I adore Verona, and the reprise of Verona. I love the German versions of these as well. I'd love to see a Zuka version of Tanz der Vampire.

I've always been really fond of the song that happens at the beginning of her wedding. The church organs and haunting chorus of the guests are so ominous. I love it.

Glad to be of service.

Speaking of which, I find it really funny that the vast majority of female Japanese Takarazuka fans (and the actresses themselves) are straight, but the vast majority of non-Japanese fans are... not so straight. I like to think that my sexuality is purely coincidental to the fact that I enjoy Takarazuka, but although I like theatre, I've never really been a fan of conventional musical theatre at all.

It's troubling to think I'm probably drawn to it specifically because it's an all female theatre and the male characters are pretty androgynous. I hope the other Takarazuka fans don't look down on me. As much as I like posting suggestive gifs I really do appreciate the Revue as an art.

I've read some quotes between girls and their mentors from within the Takarazuka troupes and stuff themselves, and it sounds like there's definitely a little bit of polite under the table Japanese lesbianism going on here and there, which surprised me a lot because whilst I'm a lesbian, I never really got gay vibes. It always felt very much artistic, but nah it does seem like some of the actresses themselves are at least a little gay, and most Japanese fans just have the pure hearts of young girls and try to pretend the attractive ladies are attractive ideal men with a feminine sensitivity. I think it's an interesting discourse on gender and sexuality amongst Takarazuka troupes and their fans, but it's difficult to fully examine things purely because fans can be secretive, and it's difficult to get information.

I'm male and attracted to women, but that doesn't make me entirely straight.. I like Takarazuka since its deeply rooted in shojo I read and matches my enjoyment in wearing lolita. I have fantasies of a female in an ouji coord kissing me.

Isn't it acceptable for girls' sexuality to be more flexible in Japan? Is it something to do with father's preferring their little girl being with another girl, or that the men took all the cute boys in the past?

Does anyone have a full version of the 2005 production of Elisabeth with Nao as Der Tod? She and Rio (from the 2014 Flower troupe production) are my favourite Tods, based on the bits I've seen of the 2005 version and the full 2014 version I've seen. Anyone know if the dvd of the 2005 production is still available, or at least the soundtrack?

Alternitively, if you're not too concerned with the video quality, you can get it cheap (and subbed!) from the TI Project. The TIP uses recordings from Japanese televsion, so it isn't the high definition quality of the official DVD. But it's still very watchable!

It was a non-subbed full version that I saw streamed somewhere but now vanished. I don't speak Japanese beyond a few words. Most of it I worked out what was going on by reading translations of the lyrics and a plot overview.

The samurai had relations with their wakashu/apprentices back in the day because they wouldn't get pregnant and it built deeper bonds for the battlefield.

As for lesbianism is today the general idea in Japan is that a girl being with another girl doesn't taint her "purity." Meanwhile women who obsess over male stars and yaoi are "rotten women." Unfortunately despite this there's only maybe 1 lesbian bar for every 10 gay bars in Tokyo and gay marriage is only legal in a couple places. Few politicians want to push further on progress because the national birthrate is so low.

Yeah while Kabuki is seen as high art today when it started it was basically a flashy front for prostitution. Today only men perform the roles but it used to be men, women and young boys and pretty much everyone on stage was available after the show. At some point the government cracked down and banned women and boy actors when they caught on. So that's why all the roles are played by men now.

(You think the clothes are uncomfortable? Try falling in the orchestra pit with all that crap on and landing on the metal music stands).

The all end up hella strong because of it though. There was an episode of VS Arashi where one of the OGs (retired members) completely owned the Pinball Runner game because she was used to moving about with a ton of heavy shit on her back.

Fujoshi ("rotten women") is a tongue-in-cheek reference to yaoi fangirls not for women who obsess over male stars. Yaoi fangirls refer to themselves as fujoshi for fun so it's less of an insult nowaways (like calling someone a "dirty otaku" on 2ch).

Loving all the dresses and links but can we try not to give explanations about the very long and convoluted history of homosexuality in Japan? Especially if you haven't been raised in the culture.

Agreed. There are all kinds of resources out there (from Japanese people) about the history of homosexuality in Japan if people want to know. I have no idea how talking about MY personal sexuality and how it relates to Takarazuka ended up with anons generalising attitudes and origins about sexuality in Japan in general.

Takarazuka actually paved the way for a lot of this acceptance and idea of "class-S" love. I guess it's less acceptance and more a grudging sort of contentment with ignoring or trivialising lesbianism. Look into the author Nobuko Yoshiya.
