The con organization doesn't seem to be great this year, with them only announcing some of the guests now.

I have three costumes planned: one major, one minor with remaking a few parts from last year, and one simple that might get cut if I don't get the major one finished in time.

So this will be my first time going to Sakura-con. I'm a Texas gull. Is there anything I should know about this con? Any tips or things to avoid?

Are they normally this late about panels? 'Cause I feel like giving panelists basically one month's notice on whether their panel made it or not is really shitty. They had a section on the form where you could put comments, and I had read in their panel FAQ that if you needed to know about your panel sooner they would try to accommodate you, but I said I needed to know sooner because I'm traveling from so far and got nothing but crickets until this week. Still going, but not 100% pleased with panels process even if I think mine got in.

Keep bothering them. They are weirdly slow on everything this year, and my friend who is on staff says that things have been really disorganized. Posting on their public pages generally gets a pretty fast response.

>tips and tricks
Seattle eats are generally expensive, if you don't mind taking a quick bus (we have a Downtown to University District link opening up which will get you there in 8 minutes)-theres way more cheap eats that are open late. Seattle eats generally close up around 9, so stock up for post rave or late night snacking. Otherwise food court in Pacific Place Mall, two mcdonalds in walking distance, a city target, and a subway outside the convention center that usually isnt as packed as the one inside are the best bang for your buck. Also starbucks on literally every corner if you've got giftcards.

>>8862585
Oh, that's true. I was just thinking for time, but including walk, it would be the same.

>late night eats
I would suggest any shwarma place. I think Aladdin Falafel next to Thai Tom has these gyro fries. BBQ Chicken (past the dollar store) is great for late night, but it's a big Korean crowd after 9. Meesum is open until midnight, if you're looking at 45th or closer-Thaiger room is open until 2am but they take only cash after 10pm or so. Oasis is open until midnight if you want to bubble tea, and right next door is EJ's which is a great burger joint and also open until midnight.

>> No.8863434

You don't really need to travel that far to get food. The new rail station will help but you're walking up to the hill anyway. Yeah it's more expensive downtown or on capitol hill but Dick's is right next to the station, and belltown has some good places, too. If you're really strapped for cash then visit the ID and buy cheap instant noodles. There's great options near Uwajimaya, too. Lots of out of town weebs love visiting there that weekend.

Not local but if you're OK with walking there's $15 a day parking about a 8 minutes from the convention center. I think it's called the Harbor Medical Center parking garage. Thanks y'all! Looks like it's fairly convenient for food, which is good. I plan on getting in to Seattle on Thursday to sightsee for a bit, and Uwajimaya is definitely on my list (weeb trash me is also very excited about Kinokuniya). Still looking into what friends and I want to do, but I'm interested in the Japanese garden and aquarium. Depends on time.

I really should have contacted panel staff earlier probably. I think I'm in, but my friend hasn't heard back yet and already dropped out of going because of that. It's slightly encouraging to hear it's an off year, but this type of last minute stuff is seriously unprofessional for a con of this caliber. Hoping they announce the rest of the guests soon.

Did anyone else here submit panels? I'm just curious.

>> No.8866029

>>8865547

The actual area by the con. center is pretty garbage, lacking in options, and overpriced for food, DESU, but if you're willing to travel to other areas of Seattle there's a ton of great stuff! If you expect to be cosplaying the whole time/need to stay by the con center, though, I'd recommend bringing food with you. Or stocking up at Uwajimaya.

This is actually my first year in a while NOT doing a panel, but I can say from previous years I always heard back quickly and had good communication, so it sucks that they're being so shitty about it this year.

>> No.8866094

Okay, hmm. So by garbage do you mean just shit options or bad in other ways? I expect to be eating fast food. I'm not wanting to go too far because I'm anticipating going to a lot of the guest panels and autographs and don't want to miss out on those. Depending on schedule, I'd be willing to go a bit for dinner, but I know lunch I want to stick close. I'll pack some snacks in my suitcase so I've at least got crackers and stuff if I need a hasty lunch.

So, formally, I haven't heard about my panel yes or no, but the one I submitted is about the historical alchemy and symbolism in FMA. So fingers crossed that it's for sure in.

I work in the plaza across from Uwajimaya and usually go there every day to get food. International District is okay. Not too clean, but not too sketchy either.

Don't get your hopes up for Uwajimaya, it's an Asian grocery store. Normal groceries, roast whole duck, fish live in tanks, bad pan-Chinese food that makes you feel like you ate a brick. The food court is "okay" I guess. The korean and pho places are a dime a dozen nothing-special, the Hawaiian place is interesting but also not too great, the Thai place is alright, and Beard Papa's and the other bakery are look good but I've never bought anything from there. The crepe place almost always has some Ghibli movie playing on their screen and the crepes are good. The takoyaki place is pretty good but all the kids who work there are dejected as fuck.

The store itself has a ton of different snacks if you are just dying to get your hands on various kinds of pocky or matcha kit-kats. Big selection of milk coffee which is nice. You could probably get some cute gift things like chopsticks or bowls or something from the gift section.

The book store has two floors, and the top floor is almost completely music CDs. I saw some Vocaloid disks there once. The bookstore itself has a very large manga selection, a stationary section (the cards are nice), and they sell dakimakura covers which I think is the most hilarious shit ever.

The Seattle Aquarium is nice. Recommended.

Haven't been to the arboretum for a while, but it's definitely better in spring and summer than winter. It probably kind of sucks now, if it's even open.

Is there still time for me to make a cosplay on a relative budget? I was thinking Kamina but it doesn't look like I will be able to do it for like $250. I'm on the right in this pic so you can see my body type and stuff, that was from the most recent PAX.

Any characters anyone can suggest that I could do for around that much money and in time?

There's not much point in voting by then since it's so "late" in the primary/caucus season, plus Washington is a pretty predictable state in terms of who it supports. Washington also has Vote by Mail if you opt in for it, which is super easy.

I think barely anyone is going to ditch the con for voting when a lot of the attendees aren't even of voting age and Washington isn't some key state. Voter turnout among young people has historically been low as well.

Are you another Texas anon?

What I'm most frustrated about is they're not even emailing us to say "Hey, your panel is accepted!" Thankfully I'm doing my panel at A-kon, too, but otherwise how am I supposed to do a quality panel in one month? Or if I had already written it and it didn't get in, what if I wasn't doing it at another con? It's so unprofessional and unfair to the panelists.

We thought A-kon was being unfair last year not telling people until like two months until the con, but that seems generous compared to Sakura-con.

I might still try out ToS at some point, but I'm awfully hesitant about it now. I haven't really been into MMOs for years. None of them quite felt as good at iRO beta, and I though that RO itself took a nosedive sometime after the Amatsu patch (ICEPICKS).

If I can get a time slot where I'm not thousands of feet in the air, mine is about the historical alchemy and alchemical symbolism in Fullmetal Alchemist.

Part of why I'm so pissed about not knowing if the panel is 100% going to happen is I've already done half of it (2003 series) and I'm halfway through a marathon rewatch of Brotherhood to do the second half of my research. It's not just casually rewatching it, it's watching and pausing every few minutes when I find something significant, diving down the rabbit hole of alchemy books, taking notes, etc. When I wrote the first part/2003 last summer, it took all summer. I worked on the Blu-ray, so I wanted to be able to share that experience with other fans.

I'm doing the panel at A-kon come June but I'm having to beat the Sakura Con date + the Brotherhood expiration date for watching it on Funimation. Either way I have to bust my ass, though.

Has Sakura Con just not gotten the memo yet that Q&A panels are going away at big cons? I find it a bit embarrassing that they still accept them when there are plenty of more meaningful panels that could have had spots. I go to panels to learn something, not to see a tumblr ask blog irl.

>Dating Sims 101
Yes please. I've wanted to get into dating sims

>textiles in cosplay sewing
This would be helpful

>Lolita on a Budget
I'd be worried about what they suggest. But if a lolita panel got rejected I hope that means there is already too many lolita panels.

Seattle Hetalia Comm is still very alive and well. I know the mods and they do a fantastic job of running it.

Ughhhhh it still hurts to see my rejected panel. I put way too much work into it for it be dumped like that.

Because the community is still alive, since I didn't leave it for dead. The panels that were submitted got accepted because they have been proven to attract VERY large groups of people even just last year, and are a consistent part of the community.
The community still exists because it wasn't run by assholes who don't ruin everything by being power hungry.

And desu, if you are who I really suspect you are: You literally run a Hetalia panel in texas cons. And are bringing a Hetalia costume to con. What the heck. Suspicion there.

I have no idea who you are, sorry anon. I don't run Hetalia panels and I'm not sure where you got off thinking I'm cosplaying Hetalia to this con. Two days of lolita, so no cosplay at all.

I'd be fine with that many Hetalia panels if a) they weren't all Q&A b) other panels that weren't Q&A didn't get rejected, yet there are still a good number of Hetalia panels that made it into the schedule. If the community is still active that would substantiate a panel, maybe two, but it seems a bit excessive at this number especially if there's not much content in them. And it's not just Hetalia that I feel this way about. The same goes for all the other Q&A–there are two Q&A for Homestuck, Helsing, Haikyuu!!, etc. Just my opinion, and I recognize that if they do fill seats and Sakura Con wants to support that, then that's their choice.

>>8900084

You want lunch, afternoon, night, or evening? The schedule doesn't have the main events / guest panels so we'd just be planning around fan ones at this point, but it can be done.

Trips are still part of anon. She doesn't know this trip, obviously.
She was just introduced to the idea of the seattle hetalia comm, of course she doesn't know about it.

I agree that it'd be nice to have some content that isn't a Q&A. Or even themed Q&As. Don't you guys want new stuff? I like hetalia but I hate Q&As so I don't go to those.

I didn't see the trip, but regardless, I have no idea who that person is. Admittedly yes, I have no idea about the Seattle comm. My issue wouldn't be with them, but with the type of panel. I think having multiple Q&A panels for any fandom is a bit excessive.

The community can support a lot of panels is the thing. The community still has at least 100 active members, and more than 300 passive.

Point proven, though your post did sound a lot like someone who I know is posting in this thread.

Also, do you have a forced anon script going? I am very much not-anon, which was very intentional.

>> No.8900237

There are none. The person running the show hates lolita and doesn't believe it belongs at an anime con (even though it's a Japanese culture con, and they let stuff like Zap's Space ship panel).

The Hetalia fandom community is alive and well in the Seattle area. I still run across cosplayers (crossplayers?) regularly and a lot of them are high school-aged, having only discovered the series in the past year or two.

Ah, damn. Thanks anyway, though. Sak, you've seriously dropped the ball and just let it roll right into the Sound.. New management this year, or..? I've also never been part of con (I always successfully ghost, since I spend all my money on booze) but this year I'm helping with artist alley, so I guess I'm a little more aware of what they're (not) doing this year, as far as organization goes.
