I threw together some progress on Yamato no Kami Yasusada today. It turned out a lot better than I had expected it to for being all put together in a day. For the most part it was just a lot of practice getting used to my new serger. I know I am probably going to nix the Hakama, just because they were just an attempted made from some left over twill I had. But maybe they're salvageable.

Hopefully I can finish all the fabric stuff and start some armor work tomorrow.

Hey anon, I've been following your process with this thing and I have some tips I guess could be useful

first thing, I think I remember you covering it with that paper+glue+water technique. Don't do it again, it never looks good in anything other than kid's school projects.

If you don't want to completely trash it, cover it with acrylic putty or other materials as such, sand it and try painting again. It will look a thousand times better and you won't have wasted everything you did until now.

Sure! It's a pepakura file (like the first thing that comes up when you google majoras mask pepakura). I just followed the normal pep stuff. The black coording around it is stuff you use when you're putting screen doors together. The rest of the raised details are just craft foam.

>> No.8786080

>>8780683
Basic shape of the sword is nice, but the metallic paint is showing every flaw and making it look super cheap. I highly recommend weathering the fuck out of it to give it more dimension and help cover the rough areas. The pleather is a nice idea as well, I say go for it. If you amp up the detail it could look really nice!

>> No.8787001

>>8781586

I think the paper+glue is only good for a rough base. I tried it myself and as you said it wont look good unless you put in extreme ammounts of effort on a small piece, i dont even want to know how much you would need to put into a big piece.

But for a base that you then go over with something like bondo or something that actually smothes things out well it might work.

What's under the duct tape? Your problem is that you need a layer of something that can be sanded, and then to sand the hell out of it. The duct tape leaves lots of little ridges, and the paint exacerbates them.

Anon, I understand it's your first time doing this, so here's some tips:

>Don't leave hot glue sticking out, it will show in the finished product.
>Sand the edges of the pieces. I know sometimes it's hard to cut them perfectly so sanding it out makes the piece much better.

I do need to sand the edges for sure, and for the hot glue I do smooth it out whilst it's still hot and it tends to get masked easily because of the mostly grey and black pant job. They're actually really light, less than 4 lbs. PVC pipe for the armature, pipe insulation and L200 foam to bulk the arm up, and EVA foam for the feathers. I'm sure they're going to feel heavier once they're cantilevering off my back, though.

>>8797394
What's the end material, fiberglass resin + bondo over the paper? Filler will hide most sins if you sand it enough.

>> No.8799101

>>8798076

Well, I'm using really thick card. Like 1 mm card because i couldn't get any other sturdy card stock. And yea, going to resin it in the end with some fiberglass support maybe, altough if the card takes in the resin it might not even be neccesary from my experience.

Never worked with filler, and i might need it for this project tough.

>>8797671

Curious, why do people prefer hot glue for foam products? I watched evil ted smith and a few other people on youtube, and most swear on glue. And even i tried some foam crafting and used neostick glue, some contact glue based on kauchuk i think, and that thing was amazing. But it did not really allow for mistakes, as once you stuck things together you could only tear it appart.

Cardstock, with resin and bondo. Google pepakura and you'll get tutorials.

If you're doing kindred and not just some random mask, the first few results are a little off looking but if you look hard enough you can find a nice unfold.

My advice is thin layers of bondo and use a mask please! I had a really bad month long cough/wheeze from accidentally breathing this stuff in and I know it can really hurt you so always be careful.
