Anon from the other thread here! I think a lot of it depends on technique. Since black's such a tricky color to work with, you kind of have to plan ahead and know the planes of your face, and know what black's going to end up shrinking.

What are you interested in hearing about? Although I warn you, I've never been a fan of wearing the ultra pale pancake makeup you get in some photoshoots (though I've seen some girls IRL do it very, very well), so I'm a bit rusty on that side.

I think that gothic makeup looks fine with lolita. I'm a gothic lolita who's not a goth outside of lolita, so my makeup tends to reflect that, but I can think of several goth gothic lolitas off the top of my head that bring western goth makeup into their lolita and I always love the look.

not that anon, but i have a round squarish face and hooded eyes. my face looks flat in photos, and chubby despite me being thin elsewhere. i have hesitated to use black or dark lipstick because i heard it makes your teeth seem more yellow, but if black does make things shrink i wonder if the combo of dark eyes and dark lips combined with cheek contouring might make my face seem less doughy.

thinking aloud here, but if you have tips to share i would be happy to hear any.

I totally have this same issue!

So as you know, contouring is probably the best bet. In contouring, the eye is going to be drawn towards the highlighted bits of your face. The contour in the chart on the left is emphasizing cheekbones, narrowing the forehead and narrowing the face at the temples. See the placement? They're just drawing in shadows to de-emphasize certain features.

Basically, to slim down cheeks, you want to take a bit of your contour color and fluff it along the outside of your face, going from the temple all the way down to along the jaw line. It's a bit of a C shape. Be sure to blend it so it looks natural. After that, you can do the cheekbones like in the chart (fluff the contour color right under your cheekbones in a general downward direction towards the corners of your mouth, but don't go too crazy! I normally just go about two inches down, myself) or you can just opt for blush.

From there, you want to keep your highlighting towards the center of your face, because that'll draw the eye in and slim your face out. So that's going to be highlighting on the top of your nose, the cheekbones, the center of the forehead (think of it as a fan shape that extends out from between the eyebrows), the chin. And definitely well blended. Of course, some people just do strobing these days (emphasizing the highlighter instead of using any contour shade), but I tend to find that can look a bit greasy in real life.

The thing that's probably going to help the most is just sitting in front of a mirror and doing some experimenting. Just see where natural shadows tend to hit your face when you have a light source in front of you and use that as a guide.

I will preface by saying I am also a regular ass goth, but I am *not* a fan of the shaved eyebrows/raccoon eyes/clown white thing. I find more subtle looks more elegant and appealing.

Black totally makes your teeth look yellow. I'd say go for something blue toned like a plum or a red. Also, Lipstick Queen has a navy blue gloss called Hello Sailor that supposedly makes your teeth look whiter, but I haven't tried it over black.

On the eyes, it would definitely help give a bit of definition, but at the same time you don't want to go OTT or it might shrink your eyes out too much. I'd recommend keeping things simple, with maybe a black liquid eyeliner with a flick, at first. It's a bit of a makeup cliche, but it's popular for a reason - the flick is going to give your eyes definition, and you can also mess with the shape of your eyes a little bit by how you draw the liner. Lots of guides available for that.

I'd also recommend lining your waterline with white or cream if you're wearing heavy eyemakeup. Most of the girls in the photos here have done that. It kind of acts by making your eyeball area look bigger so you can counteract some of the shrinkage (and it's a handy trick for correcting the red in fatigued eyes).

Plus, false eyelashes are great for opening up the eye area. The ones with individual lashes are tricky, but you can get a great natural effect from them.

A lot of people starting off mess up by thinking goth makeup is just a lot of black (see: me at 13). Three colors minimum gives you enough to play around with when doing dramatic eyeshadow: a dark black for crease and outer corners, something a little bit lighter toned like a gray or a burgundy or whatever for the whole lid (some people achieve this by blending black out like crazy), and a highlight for the inner corners and to dust over the very middle of the lid. I'm a huge fan of metallic coppery tones for goth makeup too, it really gives pale skin that consumptive look.

Also, pencil eyeliner on its own lacks a bit of polish. It's to blame for a lot of the disappointing raccoon looks you see in mallgoth. Best way to use it is to put it on, smudge it so you get this kind of effect: >>8667053 (though I think she's using powder with a flat angled brush there) and then line over the top with a gel or liquid liner. It's also generally good to avoid going all the way around the inner corner of your eye with eyeliner unless you're specifically doing the pointed tear duct look. However, that mostly depends on eye shape.

Oh, and you probably know this already but just in case anyone's thinking of white foundation.... don't unless you've got proper opaque theatrical greasepaint. Using a lighter foundation or powder just ends up making people looking dusty and patchy instead of porcelain. Believe me, I've been around tradgoths a lot. I've actually had a bit of luck bringing out a natural luminosity by using one of the Hourglass ambient light powders. If you have to pick between the two, luminosity always works better than paleness for goth makeup, whatever skintone.

Alright! Sorry for the wait, anon. I've been writing these while fighting a deadline, and I wanted to have a proper think about the heroine look. There's a lot to talk about!

A lot of Japanese-style gothic lolita looks have this interesting way of balancing big eyes with a lot of black and an emphasis on eyelashes. Tricky, but the key to a lot of this look is a bit of careful unobtrusive placement of portions that will reflect light, allow for a bit of contouring between dark and darker portions of the eyemakeup and stop the makeup from just becoming a solid block of black. Also, blending with a proper fluffy brush or sponge is crucial since you want a soft effect (softer than tradgoth makeup at least!)

If you look at something like this >>8667083 she's got a crease color blended out with a touch of highlighter color tucked along the inner corner along with a very thin line of eyeliner for definition. The reflectiveness of that little bit of highlighter gives her eyemakeup a delicate quality, pretty perfect (there are dozens of ways to play around with this concept, though). And see the way the eyeliner gets stronger the further you move away from the inner corner? It's almost like you're replicating the lay of a very thick set of lashes, similar to this one >>8667051 You'll also notice she basically has half her lower lid actually lined, then blended lightly towards the inner corner. I tend to like doing this too. It really keeps things soft and keeps your eyes open. Nice alternative if you don't want to go all the way with lower lid lining.

To get the blended effect, I recommend layering up on blended powder/pencil eyeliner with a topping of gel/liquid eyeliner like I was saying in a previous post. You can get blacker than black plus a bit of definition with that combo. Urban Decay's definitely my favorite for both proper black blendable pencils and liquid eyeliner, but it stays on you like you wouldn't believe. Have to work fast!

So basic rule of thumb for a first try before branching out and experimenting: less makeup/some highlighter at the inner corner, gradiates darker to the outer corner, with maybe some delicate outlining of the tear duct area with a bit of liquid eyeliner. And a darkish crease color if you've got a crease, it makes your eyes look deeper set which is good for that romantic goth look. And blending!

Of course, the key to the look is, I mentioned this before, having white or cream eyeliner on your waterline, which helps balance out the black and keeps your eyes looking wide and doll-like. Cream looks most natural for daily wear, white looks best with black. You can see it in action here >>8667044

False eyelashes on upper and lower lashlines are also essential, just remember to cut them down to fit your lash line (the manufacturers expect you to, don't worry). A lot of people use upper lid lashes on both the lower and upper lids, you can totally tell. That's basically the cornerstone behind Mana's look. I've also seen good work done where someone's taken a full set of lashes, then added a few individual lashes to the corners of the eyes to really amp up that outwards sweeping eyelash effect.

I tend to just go with whatever's being sold at the drugstore, so Eylure. Definition 050, Definition 110, Definition 126, maybe Lengthening 116 or Definition 120 if you have a lot of eyeliner to balance them with. I tend to think the Volume ones from them can look a bit fan-like if they're too full.

For splashing out, Shu Uemura is great. The Farfallinas are pretty and a good shape, though I admit I've mostly used Shu for novelty lashes.

I picked up some cheapie false lashies from Morphe and I've really been liking them. They have a ton of options to choose from in the cheaper line, as well as some more expensive/fancier ones in other lines.

As far as what works best with gothic makeup, I think your best bet is to choose which lashes fit your face rather than focusing on the gothic/lolita part. Of course spikier or fuller lashes are going to be more dramatic and more suited to goth than slim, more feminine ones since gothic is a very bold look.

If I'm wearing a dark lipstick I always line my lip with a color that perfectly matches the lipstick. But I don't overline my lips. I already have naturally pouty lips with a heart shaped top part (idk what it's called). I think over lining should be left to the drag queens and Mana-sama.

I do think you should blend your eyeshadow out a little--lots of great tutorials on that on youtube, or if you're lazy like me you can really just use your fingers to do the job. Maybe add a second or third color into the eyeshadow? Something darker at the outer corner and something lighter, even an ivory/highlighter type shade, at the inner corner.

this ouji-looking face seems to be 50% shoop, but the sharp, angled eyebrows can add a masculine touch when the eyemakeup is otherwise feminine.

think shounen or seinen versus shoujo manga eyes. a lot of lolita, with the big, wide eyes and huge lashes, is similar to the doe-eyed shoujo looks. using makeup to create a leaner, meaner eye can be a good idea to keep in mind for EGA.

I've never worn a gothic coord before and I'm getting kinda nervous. I've been researching and I've gained some references to use so I know it's not really a big deal, but it still bugs me. As a really tan girl, what would be best for my skin tone? I'm a warm olive if it helps and I'm just a little scared of using dark colors that will clash with my skin. Though for sure I know I'll be using black and greys on my eyes. Just not exactly sure what to use on my lips except possibly a dark plum tinted red.

Thank you! These pictures really help! Will likely use the last one as my main inspiration. I don't have a make up test to post but I'm more like NC40/42. But I really feel more confident now and I think I'll pull it off! I'll post a make up test tomorrow but hopefully I'd still get some feedback despite the festivities!

I have another question though. Although I'm going to do my best to minimize my eyebags, they're genetic and not able to disappear. Is there a way I could use this to my advantage with makeup for a spooky look though? Using pic related as reference.
