Had my first experience with bodypainting a couple months ago.

Went as Marceline to a costume party and everything went smoothly. Used on face + neck + arms.
Did the baby powder + hairspray trick on top of a random white drugstore facepaint that I dyed with black eyeshadow to get a grey color.
Lasted the whole day without touch-ups.

Sadly only low-quality selfies.
You can see I didn't apply properly at my hairline and my skin color is showing a bit.

Had a bit of a hard time keeping the color consistent, I couldn't layer the paint since it was water based. Would love some tips on that.

How, if at all, would I wear sunscreen with bodypaint? I usually don't go a day without SPF because I fear skin cancer like the devil but if not wearing sunscreen will help the bodypaint stay on at a con then I'll sacrifice one day.

My tip would be don't use eyeshadow+whatever ffs. You can buy ben nye or other facepaint in the right color for like $6, so you couldn't possibly be saving more than a dollar, tops.

>I couldn't layer the paint since it was water based
It probably wasn't waterbased facepaint then, since the water based application method is to lay down lots of thin layers. Either that or you were using way too much water on your sponge.

Yeah if that happens then either 1) your bottom layer wasn't dry, or 2) way too much water. When applying waterbased make sure your layers are 100% completely dry, and squeeze out your sponge before picking up makeup - you want it damp but not so wet that tons of water comes out.

Get professional grade face paint and determine the best way to seal it (I'm assuming you want white since its for shironuri, but most brands will carry a variety of colors). Wolfe FX, Diamond FX, TAG, Global, Mehron Paradise, Kryolan Aquacolor, Kryvaline, and Cameleon are all great brands and you can find them all online. Ben Nye has nice "greasepaints" if that's what you want. Dips Waterproof Facepaint is also really neat, although I haven't used that personally. With most water based paints, a spray sealant is the way to go (I like Mehron's Barrier Spray, but Ben Nye makes one, I think Urban Decay has one too). If you have a "greasepaint" then you'll need to seal it with setting powder.

If you really can't afford sealants, you can go the hair spray and baby powder route, but remember that those things aren't meant for your face and can cause problems when used in ways they aren't intended.

When I'm using creme/oil-based makeup I usually saturate it with translucent powder until it's no longer tacky to the touch and then seal it in with Final Seal. As a warning, it will rub off more than water-based paint sealed equally well, so watch out for the necklines of the clothes you wear.

>> No.8627338

>>8627315
I'm not a huge fan of greasepaints because they never really dry, they'll stay tacky all day. If you want them to last in the heat, you must powder them. I'm also not a fan because I don't think that greasepaints are as easy to work with, but that's a personal preference.

Look, Homestuck and Steven Universe have proven people will use body paint even if they shouldn't be doing it, because they don't have a clue what they are doing and/or can't actually afford to do it right.
It's way better for them to know how to cheaply seal their crappy paint so at least they won't get it on someone else's shit than just skip sealing altogether because "sealant is too expensive".
I'm not saying I actually advocate people using hair spray vs. proper sealant, but its worth mentioning as simple damage control.
Because if they want to, people are going to use body paint either way, and I would much rather have them just look shitty than look shitty AND get paint everywhere.
It's the sort of thing that leads to cons banning all body paint, regardless of whether it is sealed or not, or making you prove yours is sealed and therefore wasting your time as each staff member checks your paint is sealed.

I'm the anon planning on a horror/medical shironuri coord and since this thread is more active I guess I'll ask here:
Can I apply prosthetics over facepaint? These are the prosthetics in question. http://www.mostlydead.com/collections/injury-fx/products/cluster-pox
I don't think I should apply them directly on my skin because it says they blend with your skin tone and it would look weird to have white skin and suddenly flesh toned sores. I'm using a greasepaint with a setting powder and probably final seal on top

I think with that prosthetic it is literally going to be transparent. It will blend in with any skin color because it will literally be see through. There is a video at the bottom of the page you linked that shows you how to apply it, the only difference is that you're going to painting over everything (application and your own skin). I would apply the prosthetic first, then apply your white, painting over the edges of the application to blend it in with your natural skin, then applying the blood that comes with the prosthetic. I think spirit gum will adhere better to your skin than it will to paint.

Snazaroo is a brand of water-based children's face paint that is pretty hypoallergenic because it's meant to be used on literal children. It's popular with homestucks because it's cheap and comes in a light grey. It's not the best, but it's good enough and works, and is cheap enough to be worth trying at least. Yeah, I have a bad habit of forgetting not to use emotes here. I'm sorry.

Actually had insurance until I was dropped for "non-payment". It was instead an information communication error between healthcare marketplace and the insurance company about the amount due, so I paid the wrong amount. Neither would take responsibility and continued to point fingers at the other one, so it was never resolved after several appeals.

I'm obviously unsure where you're from, but free clinics aren't common in my area, and according to the government I make too much for Medicaid or food stamps. Have been on hard times financially for quite some time, and have made very little progress in getting any help despite my efforts. Just trying to finish school and get into a full time position seems to be the best thing. I appreciate the advice, though. There are those it works for.
