Does anyone else get a bit stressed out about the condition/damaging their older items? Things like lace and embroidery seem to be the most susceptible to damage, whether it be due to time or wear. I have this Moitie OP and the embroidery is coming unattached and I'm scared it's going to unravel, especially as I stupidly cut a loose thread from one of the embroidered crosses rather than asking a friend that offered to fix it do it. It's also a bit pilled.

Another issue seems to be discolouration from age. I know that the white lace on the heart bags that BTSSB has yellow really easily. The print on one of my cutsews has yellowed horribly and I never even wore it.

I own pic related and it's aged really well, the velveteen ribbons haven't even gotten damaged.

It seems as though the crosses just need to be sewn down a bit at the top. Not sure what to do about the pilling but it's mild. She offered to do it for me for free but I want to give her something first and am waiting to be able to grab some things I have for her in storage at my old house so it will be awhile. Don't worry, it's still intact as much as it was when I got it.

I wish Arachnophobia stuff was easier to find secondhand.

It's easy enough to find and use normie black mary janes. I'd get white ones just so I have something to wear with pink and white colourways. Black's good with wines, dark reds/ greens, most other things but you would be able to find them easier in a pinch. I had a preference for dark shoes and was stuck not being able to coord my lighter pieces. I'm surprised you don't already have a pair of plain, smart black shoes.
And some people will say black shoes are fine with outfits that are otherwise whites/ baby pinks but that's more in old street straps with nostalgia-goggles on, not so much in reality. Do you have a lot of pieces with white contrast lace? White shoes will work with them, matching the shoes/ everything to the lace is very oldschool.

A lot of meta's stuff is pretty badly documented, even up until recently. Older solid dresses often have pretty generic names, especially velveteen. Usually something like Velveteen (doll/ antique/ classic/ blablah random word) JSK/ OP/ Skirt. You won't really find listings for meta's stuff but you can look through old baby and AP on lolibrary and find some. You don't need to search up a specific dress, you'll find something similar eventually.

when someone tries to explain lolita nowadays, i always hear it's based on victorian children clothing, and it's true that it does ressemble contemporary lolita.
but no matter what, when you look at oldschool, it's a lot more like the specific style of doll clothing you find on some of the old porcelain ones than anything victorian. especially the shoes and headwear.

what's up with that?

Exactly; includes regency and Edwardian. More of an antique doll look, a creepy doll look in some cases. But yeah, the dolls were pretty much miniaturized clothing of the era (could be Victorian), and so were childrens clothes so it's almost saying the same thing. I think Victorian is just the one most people recognize. If anything there was less of an emphasis on 'rococo' before. Rectangle headdresses are quite the dolly look though. The Victorian porcelain doll look was a trend in lolita for a while, so that helps explains why you can see so much similarity. I don't know if it was neccessarily the basis of lolita or if it's just another trend though (like how we're currently knee-deep in original prints trend).

There was a pretty wide range of clothing in the GLBs, actually, ranging from ridiculously over-frilled to simple and elegant, and there were more casual clothes and housewear (like actual night gowns and such). I don't know, I think we've just gone through too many trends to ever be able to describe it as specifically one thing or another anymore.

Yeah I always found it odd that dolly kei is a style that well, isn't that doll like. To be fair, "dolly" and "lolita" are both nicknames for "dolores"
In some alternate universe lolita is called "dolly" or "alice"
Recently I saw some girl at my college in a cute old school-ish gothic coord. I didn't want to say the L word in public so I complimented her on her bag and said "it's from mu-fish, right?"
I hate having to avoid the correct name because of the sexual connotations

>the dolls were pretty much miniaturized clothing of the era (could be Victorian), and so were childrens clothes
i'm not so sure about that. when you look at the kind of victorian clothing that's the closest to the lolita shape, which seems to be around 1870 (and that only works for children, since adult women at the time have floor length dresses), you notice they mostly wear dresses with very little lace and pointy boots. no trace of otks, rectangle headdresses like you said, bonnets (except on babies), rounded shoes or big lace...

Otks where always worn by both children and adults, A bare leg would be unacceptable. bonnets where often worn by both children and adults too. You seem to have very little understanding of period clothes I suggest doing a bit of research maybe going through some old Victorian and Edwardian post cards.

I was wondering if any of you seagulls had sold all of your modern lolita/prints before wearing/buying only solely oldschool?

I have a lot of printed pieces and modern dresses from different styles (mainly gothic and classic) but I very rarely wear them and have lost a lot of interest in lolita outside of old school. I've never sold a big portion of my wardrobe before so am a little hesitant.

I have nothing against the false stuff, but I've personally given up wearing wigs because I realised I was only wearing them because I didn't feel like my own hair was good enough or neat enough for Lolita.
I feel so much better about myself since giving them up. I genuinely started thinking that I needed them to look good. I keep one or two pastel coloured ones, but I'm not letting myself buy natural (but different to mine) coloured wigs because my hair "doesn't match my coord"

Oooh as a doll collector I can't help but point out that that is an old doll in a new dress.

These are not the sort of dresses bisque dolls originally wear and its actually quite taboo in the doll community. To put it in perspective they're the ita of the doll communities.

I'm only saying something because there's literally someone in the ita thread claiming some ita looks like "an old porcelain doll" and it hit a nerve in both hobbies for me lol
