None. All "famous" cosplayers do is sell themselves. I don't mind as much if they have talent and are trying to teach others but most of them just want you to buy their fap b8 prints which makes shit awkward when we're not thirsty for your overdone shit. Being a cosplay model isn't a real job you can write up on a resume. It's a scam only supported by camwhores, neckbeards, and photogs. I stay only for the drama really, cosplay is dead and Yaya killed it.

Not if she wants to support herself. Prices in the cosplay community are low. Have you ever looked into what actual self-supporting professional seamstresses charge for bridal, etc? I've seen that a few times, along with sewer. But they're both colloquial and not widely used or "real" words. Most men in the business are true tailors and there aren't that many men in the hobby side.

This, and the popularity contest is an addictive game. They reach their first 1000 likes, it's not enough. They reach 5000, it's still not enough. 10 000 is not enough. 20 000 is not enough. 100 comments per photo is not enough. Encouraging messages and comments are not enough. You're never satisfied, you keep wanting more. You start getting jealous of other cosplayers because they seem to be getting more attention, you start basing the whole hobby on reaching more likes and attention. All of your posts have to be carefully planned to please everyone so you wouldn't lose your precious fans or upset anyone to end up in /cgl/.

Then you start getting tired of your fandom. You'll think they don't care about you. You're constantly afraid of getting stale and someone else taking your place in the spotlight. You'll refresh your page after every post and carefully monitor the likes. You're not a cosplayer anymore as much as you're a media whore, and getting out of that situation is mentally straining.

Been there, done that.

>aspiring indie designer

you have skills now, keep the focus on what you like rather than what makes you feel relevant. you will always feel happy doing what you like, but chasing relevancy will mostly frustrate your original goal of designing because its fun and an expression of you

fame is a problem that we have never fixed correctly, and the internet unfortunately makes the media cycle faster and more demanding.
people who are become famous for doing what they love manage fame differently than people who "achieve" fame as a social conquest, but both carry the burden of this a new relationship type that you don't have any control over. and that's BEFORE putting management and agencies into the mental/social mix.

doing what you love, getting good at it because it feels good to get better, these are lasting and fulfilling and totally respectable ways to share what youre doing with your community. people who get that will ALWAYS get that, that love never dies

I feel like the potential for more attention is the main thing keeping her in the hobby, which to me is a bad reason to keep cosplaying. She is genuinely really good at what she does and puts a lot of work into her costumes to make them great, but she is also acquiescing to the sad reality that boobs = likes, whereas when she first started, she literally told me she didn't want to be fap material. Now she tugs her neckline down before taking a selfie.

Some people from RT wanted nothing to do with her. People began to speculate that the marriage was a sham and she has no legal use being here in the US. So she fled west where illegal immigrants get better treatment in California than Texas. She was suppose to be at Rooster Teeth's home convention and straight up just didn't go after moving in with Sushimonster.

As long as she gets that pity money from Monty's fan, and tit money playing LOL (which she claimed she was against but well, that didn't last long), and money possibly appearing on Game Grump shit, she has it made in California.

It would be a smart move for them to leave things as they are. Any name they were trying to build for Crabcat got tarnished pretty badly by HoC and I can't imagine they were somehow getting more business from it besides continuing to make "commissions" for themselves.

>> No.8592749

Yeah, I feel like they could still get by if they took commissions from regular cosplayers/normies who don't know better, but they definitely hamstringed themselves from getting into the 'industry' and getting more gigs from companies.

Two random things I just remembered:

1.) Jessica had posted this on her blog during the HoC drama , it also seems to another hint that Crabcat is dead: http://jessicamerizan.tumblr.com/post/90710363700/im-done

2.) I realized during HoC that Holly's construction skills weren't actually that good. She's alright (and can sculpt a good beast head) but otherwise she's no where on the level of other people getting paid by companies for their craftsmanship.

Actually I am going to take that part back, because there are some pretty mediocre cosplayers getting paid by companies. Just that she seemed to really wanted to be acknowledged as a professional fabricator person rather than just a model, but as far as cosplayers in that niche go I think of Vensy and Volpin, and she isn't nearly as good as them. I still like her, I just see all the flaws in her Commander costume now. Her Blathers is great, but she got a lot of help from EvilTedSmith on that.

I think Courtoon works for an animation studio in California and Meagan Marie worked at Riot Games for a little while in Ireland before quitting and moving back. Not sure if their costuming had any impact on either of these though.

Volpin makes prop replicas for game studios and trophies for gaming award shows/tournaments, so I'd say he's one of the more obvious cases of someone starting as a cosplayer, becoming a professional and getting industry work.

She also has said that she's no longer going to Blizzcon "due to school" but a month ago or so she was asking for tickets in a few groups. My guess is she expected to get them as part of her payment for working at Gamescom and is mad she didn't, so she's not going.

For someone who makes beautiful work her widowmaker really was shit.
Also her horns - I can understand that price if she's custom designing and making some for someone, but for just runs of an old mould she shouldn't charge more than £30 at most

I thought it looked alright, besides the fact that she choose to fake the open back. It's not on par with the professional one Blizz commissioned last Blizzcon, but it's the nicest one I've seen otherwise.

Kamui's Symmetra though...it fit poorly and puckered, and worst of all it was mirrored. How do you make that mistake when you're an official booth babe? Especially when you publicly complained about Blizzard not hiring you before?

Just wondering, how much did she charge for horns? I tried looking in her Etsy history, but apparently Etsy now removes the prices on previous sales, which sucks. I feel like $10 is low, seeing as they're slush cast so you have to spend time on each one, you can't just pour it and leave it be, also because she paints/finishes some of them. If she uses the right kind of resin for rotocasting, then that factors in too (both in material costs and time costs because you have o work it longer). Certainly still a huge rip off if it's multiple hundreds, but I'd like to know how much of a rip off it is.

>Megan Marie
If that's true, then that's hilarious. Kamui is so bad at being professional.

Blizzard internships are paid, I know people who interned at Blizzard, and if you look on the Blizzard site, it confirms it (yes, even the marketing team ones). Also Monika worked there for Summer '13 and Summer '14 so she was at least invited back for a second internship. She's still in school so she wouldn't be working a full time job yet anyways. IDK why people are speculating that she's trash at her job. Blizzard internships are pretty competitive so you have to actually be good and not just passable in order to be invited back, if she was just alright, they they probably would have preferred to give someone else a chance. She didn't intern this past Summer, but that's hardly proof that she's bad at her job. She might have just wanted to spend her last vacation traveling and hitting up cons. She guested at a ton with Riddle, even a few international ones, if I had the opportunity to get comped travel overseas all Summer, I'd consider it too. I like reading cosplay dramu, but it's boring when it's all made up.

God, this. Her armory isn't even that good if you put the reference image next to her costume. It's really eyeopening. It's mostly flat two-dimensional worbla surfaces that doesn't look very good up close, but photos are forgiving. And paint jobs done by her husband, of course.

I personally cringe at people now stuffing everything with worbla. Because of Lightning and Kamui most people now think their suit will be saved by adding as much worbla as possible because it's easy. I've seen my friends use worbla for things they can easily make out of eva foam at lower costs and better results, I've seen good prop bases ruined by adding a frumpy overheated layer of worbla on them. Lightning uses worbla a lot better than Kamui though, at least she takes the time to prime and seal the stuff instead of just adding maybe one layer of wood glue and covering the shitty surface in hard paint accents. I don't use worbla and instead rely on more traditional materials, and I constantly get people asking how I make my props. The easy answer is "everything but worbla". Cosplay allows you to be so fucking creative and you choose to just slap on a sheet of processed wood chips to make it look like a piece of cardboard someone sat on.

That when people say "Oh look at my "nomakeup selfie" when they are wearing mascara, foundation, and gloss is setting unreasonable expectations on girls?

No one can fucking be themselves when people lie about being natural. So many women hate their natural boobs because they aren't perky like so and so....when so and so got implants.
