Has anyone else seen the god-awful cosplay variant covers Marvel is doing for September? The concepts seems pretty gimmicky to begin with, but the pictures/cosplays for some of them are just so bad.

From /co/:

yaya han, "famous" cosplayers and the bitch star of heroes of cosplay -- another failure of a project she pitched for years -- pitched this cosplay cover idea to marvel. marvel approved with the caveat of accurate costumes. it was all shot in Atlanta largely using the same people yaya knows that go to AWA and DragonCon.

for once she did not use her more "famous" cosplay friends so she wouldn't be upstaged in the covers. for example riki lecotey has a famous Wasp costume and she wasn't used at all as the two have been bitter since heroes of cosplay failed. the girls are contractually locked from doing other TV projects because they signed multi-year deals with the heroes of cosplay production company.

These covers are mostly shit, though. They all look like iphone con snapshots. Marvel comics is a fairly shoestring operation, but it wouldn't have been hard or that expensive to get a real photographer and get much better, more dynamic images that actually look professional and like something you'd put on a published comic for general sale. The Ant Man cover is the only one that isn't giving me secondhand embarrassment.

I think its disingenuous to say that people who do amazing cosplay work aren't part of the fandom. With the except of a select handful of professional cosplayers, the people at conventions are really dedicated fans.

That being said, my complaint with most of these is not the costume, but the photos themselves. Copyright and release issues. It's literally possible to run such a contest, but it's time consuming to deal with a whole bunch of individual cosplayers and photographers and impossible to totally CYA from a legal perspective. They don't have the ability to fact check claims of copyright ownership really until someone comes forward after the fact and says "I took that photo and I never said you could use it." And then they may be facing a lawsuit. From a legal perspective having one photographer taking the photos to order with a single contract and copyright negotiation (and model release forms from every cosplayer) is much safer and faster.

Nope, but your reading comprehension is shit. Marvel wouldn't be worried about being sued by cosplayers or the owners of the copyrighted characters. They'd be worried about being sued by a cosplay photographer if someone else claimed credit for it and left them out of the loop or they were credited wrngly.

Have the in-house photographer shoot it, they can keep the copyright of photos as work for hire, and they know who took the photos. Only one signature needed, and that's the cosplayer.

Contest submissions operate under a different set of laws, and depending on how its showcased, can even be exempt, since it may fall under Editorial rules for photography usage.

Like >>8569930 said, she is part of Birds of Play, which as far as I can tell is just the girl from Castle Corsetry making costumes for girls who are skinnier and prettier than she is to model so that she can advertise her business.
I don't know if OP's girl can sew at all or if she just wears things the chubster makes.

And, yeah, I used to follow SamuraiGreen on tumblr and from what I remember (at least 3+ years ago) they used to date and then she moved to Cali and when he went to surprise visit her he caught her in the act of being a dirty, cheating slut.

I don't know if I got all the details right but, yeah, that'll all I recall. I don't seek out her drama, I just hate her face and hate seeing someone who is terrible get any level of prominence so I get irritated when I see her posted anywhere.

Uh, I'm an actual licensed US lawyer. The concerns for "submit your cosplay photo, we'll post it on our website, and you might win a prize" contests are different. If a photo is submitted to that kind of contest without permission, the worse they really have to worry about is a takedown notice, and few photographers are going to object to a cosplayer submitting a single photo they took to a promo contest. It's both advertising and good business sense to let your cosplayer client use a photo that way. These covers, on the other hand, are commercial use. They are literally for sale and being promoted as special cosplay photo issues. The same photographer who might be happy for Marvel to post one of her photos to their facebook page is not necessarily going to be happy to see Marvel *selling* their photo without permission. Aaaaand that's how you get sued.
