It's not much, but it's a start, I suppose. At least I have well over 5 months left. This was the easiest part, but I still have to give it another layer of red on later date. Also need to get yellow paint for the tips.

But I do dread everything else I need. Gotta do a flea market run on Monday and hope I get lucky. Getting long leather boots and pay like 80€ for them brand new is not something I'd do willingly. Also something similar to trench coat would be ideal. But honestly I had no idea that finding green one would be so hard. I checked my favourite army surplus store and they only had grey or brown ones. Unless there's a way to dye wool without messing it up, I'm stumped.

Man, I had no idea I would end up writing such a novella for a very short progress. Please forgive me.

First things first if you can get Pep files its always better to have them, even if you dont follow them to the letter.

Fiberglass is more difficult to work with and considering the size these builds can get weight becomes an issue so I cant really recommend it.

Eva foam & cardboard is fine for weight and can be fairly durable if done right but expect alot of work to make the finish look good. It takes some work to make foam or cardboard look like something resembling metal.

Id recommend Sintra with fiberglass underneath in key areas for strength. Lightweight with decent durability and a nice finish without a ton of finishing work.

All this being said if this is your first build the Grevier as a choice might be biting off a bit much to chew as its a very complex design. You might want to experiment with a simpler design first or at least some props to build some skill and get a feel for the material first. If you want to jump right in build a few parts from card-stock or cheap cardboard first to get a feel for the shapes and design and how they fit together before committing to making them in the more expensive materials.

Pep files are spread out all over the place. There is a torrent you can find on most trackers that has alot of mech stuff but its a few years out of date. Paperreplika is a good source and you could always try /po/ as well.

Don't feel bad about doing a few builds to get your skills up to snuff before moving on. Experience is worth more than any tutorial when it comes to this imo. I made 2 suits with the plan of just building skill before trying my hand at Alt-Eisen.

This is a gift for my girlfriend. The Excalibur was the first prop I ever made over 5 years ago and was what started me on cosplaying. I made the first one for her before we even got together. Here is a comparison of the two. The difference 5 years of experience makes is pretty striking I think...

Larger/thicker parts I just cut with a regular old box cutter. I haven't had much luck cutting 3mm Sintra with a box cutter or any other sort of utility knife; even with the scoring, sometimes the rest of the sheet shatters outwards from the part I'm trying to break off. Here is a better pic to show how I built up the layers in stages.

You don't have to get the curve absolutely perfect. I filled in the rough spots with bondo and sanded them even. You can use rolled up sandpaper or a dremel/rotary tool to smooth out your rough areas. I go over all the edges with 180 grit to round it a bit and then sand in higher grits up to 1500 for the final finish.

After half a year of being lazy My friend and I have finally decided to rework Peridot from scratch. We're doing a lot of things differently this time and using better materials. The boots are going to be longer and will have extra height via heels on the inside, and the overall surface area of the boots has gotten smaller, which will make walking way easier. We're also going to be making several different arms, some for photoshoots and some for casual convention walking so that I can actually use my hands. Pic related is the old boot compared to the new boot with the Fiberglass cloth and resin on it. Its much sturdier, so hopefully nobody will try to step on them and cave them in this time.

This is my Kid Goku WIP, Still need to hem the top, I just applied the patches and need to sew them for extra security.

It's the first thing i've made with a machine by myself and I am pretty impressed.
I know it's not 100% accurate, but the pants are shorts because I intend to wear this to tomorrow world and i'm gonna get really hot dancing. If I wear it to a con I'll probably make some pants. Which is also why it is not one single jumpsuit as well.

Sintra is expanded foam PVC. There is another kind of PVC sheeting called extruded. It's smother and tends to be a lot heavier as it is not foamed.
I love mixing the two though and extruded PVC is like opened and flattened PVC pipe in terms of how you work with it- heat to crate curves, sand and prime, and paint with almost anything.

Sintra I love for how light and how nicely shallow you can bevel edges down for blades or to blend laminated surfaces.

>>8589620
I've worked with fibreglass for 6 years now and love it. It is as light or as heavy as your needs are, too many people use bog/bondo etc, which brings the weight. And I know the tendancy is to laminate too many layers when you really should be doing as few as you can.
That said its a not user friendly product and I'd highly recommend starting with just heavy card stock and get templates started before deciding anything.

I'd actually recommend reading everything you can about surfboard building, as well as boat building. It's how I learned. And they also will generally talk about entire systems from support fillers, to fairers, to paint and gel coats. This all works on a system that creates incredible chemical bonds.
So long term aim for that one :) It took me a good 6 years to work my way to feeling confident in using it :)

Also Polyester resin is to be avoided unless you develop an allergy to resin. I am at the end of my days of using epoxy as I have scars from it all over my hands (chilblains at the same time made a total mess as the resin then gets in to the dermal layers),

>What kind of metal did you use? I mean thickness and quality?
Mild steel (both hot rolled or cold rolled), 18 gauge and 16 gauge thicknesses. It's a very common type of steel that is used for non-critical structural applications. Its low carbon content means it cannot be hardened through heat treating, but that's not something I have equipment to do anyways (a forge).

I get the steel sheets from Alro Steel. They have walk-in locations where they sell the "drops" and scraps that are cut off from the larger orders they have. The total amount of steel that the entire cosplay uses for plate armor is around $60.

In the early 14th century, this steel would probably be something like middle quality armor steel. In the 16th century, (once steel hardening became more of a thing), it would probably be low quality armor steel.

>And did you just go wild with a hammer and anvil, or did you use a fully equipped shop to work on it?
If you're interested in whether or not you can do this without a fully equipped shop, the answer is yes. A shop does help speed everything up though.

The majority of the work is with hand tools. Hammers, masonry chisels, files, saws, drills, etc... You can find these for cheap at second hand stores. The power tool that is absolutely necessary is a pedestal grinder so you can shape the hammers and masonry chisels into armor smithing tools. The tool that will save you the most time is anything that can cut out metal shapes quickly. That could be a powered bandsaw, a beverly shear, or a notch cutter.

An anvil isn't explicitly necessary. You just need large steel shapes to pound the sheet metal against. These can take the form of a flat steel table, a trailer ball hitch, a dumbell weight, etc...

This link is a site where I am trying to document my armorsmithing.

I've made these things before, and I want to share a tip with you that I found:

http://cottesimple.com/articles/elbow-hinge/

If you intend to wear armor over a thick padded garment, the garment should be close fitting without restricting mobility. The modern straight cut arms and sleeves cannot achieve that very well. When you bend your elbow, it will feel tight. Wear this for more than a few hours and it will become exhausting.

The solution is an over 500 year design. It adds extra fabric to the elbow joint. You'll be able to the fit the sleeve much tighter to your arm while still having excellent mobility.

The design of the shoulder is much more complex, but you don't need to incorporate that unless you plan on swinging around swords and spears for several hours.

Do you test glues / paints / assembly before you commit them to your costume? You should if you aren't.

>Should I not be using hot glue due to it melting in hot weather?
The hot glue will not melt in hot weather; melting point is above boiling water. It will get slightly flexible if sitting in a hot car though.

Hot glue can work, but like all adhesives, it all depends on the two materials you're trying to bond. What is that stuff?

Of course. Here was my process for this leg piece- Build test base, scrap it, build test #2, turned out better than test #3 (But I'm covering it up with scales, so it didnt matter too much), make test scale or two, figure out how they need to be, make shitton more, take scotch tape and make sure they fit and look right (What you see), then I'm going to paint one scale that I can easily reproduce, see how that goes, and then get my process down. This is my first time making armor, but definitely not cosplaying/costuming. I used to make all my shit out of fabric and wood, so this is a bit less permanent and a lot more cost friendly.

The stuff I'm using is like, 10$ a pack craft foam, like, 2mm thick. Bends and holds shape with heat, not as much as worbla, but enough to get the shape to stay. Not something you detail with

Made a Moose kigu for a friend of a friend. They apparently got fucked over by a pal of theirs. They dropped $80 and never received the kigu. Ended up making this for her over the course of a couple weeks or so. I used wooden buttons. The hood came out a little too large but I asked her along every step of the process how she wanted it. She was fine with it although i'll be altering my own pattern for future use. It's really super comfy and I think it turned out pretty decent. Praise be to the one step buttonhole gods.

It's a place in Ann Arbor, MI called MakerWorks. Two people that use this place have won awards at Youmacon before, and then there's another guy making a full sized Space Marine costume here. This place is equipped to produce near movie quality costumes.

I feel that makerspaces are under utilized by cosplayers. Not just the tools, but the knowledge and skills of the other people that use these places.

>Do you pay to get in every time you go?
There are daily, monthly, and punchcard memberships. $90 a month, discounted if you're a student. You need to be certified on machines with classes before using them. It's fucking pretty cheap considering what people pay for education around here.

>Do you bring your own supplies or can you buy them there?
Mostly bring in your own supplies. There are enough scraps around from other people's projects to cobble together small things though.

>Is it specifically for metalworks or can someone come work on foam armors?
There's a full metalshop, full woodshop, sewing, auto-embroidery machine, CNC laser, vacuum former, electronics, there's fucking everything. CNC laser is what you would want for foam armor. It cuts foam 10 times faster than you can and doesn't care how intricately detailed your pattern is.

>>8628212
I don't know the answers to your questions, but I know you should find them in historical WWI clothing instead of trying to make things up. Build the costume the way it was actually built back then. It was designed and tested through warfare, so you know that it works.

Don't make the same mistakes I did with my knight armor. I assumed that modern designs were always better and I ended up with really shitty under armor sleeves that limited my mobility. I had to go back 600 years and use an ancient pattern that doesn't appear on modern clothes today.

Legs are finished. The fit is extremely snug, but there is no discomfort, pinching, or blood loss after 4 hours of wearing. Full range of leg motion and nothing moves or slides around where it isn't supposed to at all.

What isn't visible is the lace pointing suspension for the knees (>>8645182) and the thick layers of stretch fleece wrapped around both legs (from ankle to above knee cap) underneath the black pants. The fleece provides padding, makes the leg more substantial, and allows the straps to be really tight without affecting comfort. The bottom cuffs of the pants are taped tight so the pants don't gradually pull out of the boots as you move around.

This is exactly what I wanted to make; a completely maintenance free and comfortable leg harness you can wear for days. This isn't hard to make (it's only armor, straps, and boots after all), but it is hard to design so that everything looks and functions flawlessly.

Sure thing. I went into PhotoShop and used a hexagon shaped brush to make the first template after measuring out the size. I then cut that out onto 3mm sintra. I took many strips of 2 inch blue masking tape and placed them on a clear acrylic sheet. I then used the 3mm template to cut out a ton of the hex shapes to be masked. It's a long process but I'm very happy with the results.

As for me I'm in south Florida and I only rarely make it to shows out of state. Usually I'm cosplaying mecha and the logistics of getting a suit around combined with my job makes things difficult.

I'll be at chibi-pa in south Florida later next month.

All metal pieces of the armor were completed in 2 months (including helmet). My greaves alone took 1.5 weeks (40 hours total). I learned the majority of this armor smithing on the go, so about 1 month of the time was just learning, testing, and mistakes. Basically, it takes the same amount of time as learning how to work with foam and producing a high quality foam armor piece. It probably costs roughly the same amount of money as well. The big difference is that there are tons of tutorials for foam, but hardly anything for steel.

The tools required aren't expensive, but you have to make them yourself. I don't think it's possible to make the greaves by Halloween unless you've already got tools and a workspace ready to go. I'll look at the greaves later and see if I can find a pattern.

I've never actually worked with foam. The majority of my costuming experience is with chain mail, however I have recently purchased many of the tools for plate including several hammers, snips, and a cheap anvil. I wouldn't expect to need a dishing form for greaves and I'd probably just improvise any fluting for this project instead of trying to build the part I need to do it correctly, considering the time constraint.

Pic related: I made the scale mail.

>I'm just curious if you knew of any good patterns that would fit the style in
Steel armor patterns are difficult to find for some reason, so I just make all my own. I would not know where to find patterns. It's not difficult to make your own though; cardboard works very well as a mock up material. Here is the pattern for the demi-greaves pictured here: >>8650302. It's curved into a U shape, then you have to do some dishing along the left and right sides to accommodate the muscle bulges of the legs.

Greaves (particularly the close fitting case greaves) are actually complicated shapes because the human lower leg is strangely shaped. You have to study your legs really carefully if you want the greaves to fit right. Pay attention to the muscle and flesh distribution. Then there's the ankle with the weird bone protrusions and dynamic motions. However, if your greaves are fitting over a leather boot like mine are are or you use a lot of padding, it's somewhat easier. I haven't been able to make close fitting greaves yet.

The other important thing about greaves is that they need to be held up; either pointed (tied) to your pants or a tight strap that goes over the calf and behind the knee. If they aren't they will slide down your leg as you walk. When you attempt to crouch, jog, or walk down stairs, the bottom of the greaves will crush into the top of your feet.

I'm developing a website / wiki for teaching design and cold forging armor. It's not done but it might help you. https://sites.google.com/site/platearmorpanel/
