When are people too old for cosplay?

>> No.8525705

When they start picking characters that they are clearly too old for. It's fine to cosplay til you're old and gray but no one wants to see a 50something year old cosplaying a teenager unless you're going for a joke cosplay like your picture. Get older, cosplay older characters.

Most people only go to cons once or twice a year. Cons are basically vacations. Are people who have jobs and families not allowed to have vacations?

Also 23 is way too young to be having kids. Most 23-year-olds are still somewhat dependent on their own parents due to being fresh out of college and needing help to figure out the next step, and they likely don't make near enough money to support a child. If they want to cosplay on the side, that's fine. It's pretty easy to save up for cons and cosplay even if you have a full time job at a grocery store.

This is part of why most parents are such shit. People think the right time to have a family is straight out of college and hardly anyone who does this is actually ready, even if they think they are. I have so many friends who did this and not only did they have no time to enjoy life on their own, but they're awful parents because they have absolutely no idea what they're doing or real world experience. How the fuck can people expect to properly take care of kids when they haven't even had time to take care of themselves?

Go on and throw away living for yourself at 23, in the mean time I'll enjoy conventions and not having crotch spawn glued to my tit all day.

On the upside, it means her kids will be out of the house when she's 40, and if she has her shit together and a decent salary 40 is quite young for enjoying oneself with disposable income and no kids. While I never would have had a baby before 30 under any circumstances, I do think being over 50 when the kid moves out and the child having fewer years with grandparents (my mom's awesome) are downsides.

>> No.8527241

I personally think you should reconsider if you are cosplaying a character >15 years younger than you are without aging the ensemble up to match. The reverse of that age gap is also iffy but weathering skin/eyes with makeup and prosthetics is already common enough to get by. These are all assuming the character ages at the pace of normal humans.

And those are just personal nitpicks, no one can stop you from cosplaying at any age, so why should you stop unless you want to?

>> No.8527246

You're never too old to cosplay in general but that doesn't mean there aren't circumstances where you'll stand out and look weird if you're older. Generally if you're alone and old you're going to look weird - same with older people who are trying to cosplay the ~super kawaii~ teenage characters and end up looking haggard.

Cosplay something age-appropriate, though, and people will love you. I fucking love seeing older people in cosplay, provided they're cosplaying older characters.

You are a kid. You have a lot of growing up and learning to do. Thinking you know better than your elders because you're of legal adulthood is a sure sign of being a child.

Enjoying and being passionate about a hobby that gives you joy and excitement is ageless. Whether it be making and wearing silly costumes or scrapbooking or whatever us "grown ups" are supposed to be doing with our spare time between increasing the world's population, consuming resources, and paying taxes.

Sooner or later old age is going to slap you in the face and you would've wished you'd done all those things when you were young. Young meaning before your body starts giving out not some arbitrary number you think is to old to do things.

If cosplay no longer suits you, find another hobby. But for many of us, we've been enjoying this scene for a very long time: much longer than you, and I know people who have been into this since you were in diapers.

If that guy's "older," then pretty much everyone who actually "goes all out" is older. The people who invest serious time and money in Halo armor or screen accurate Batman costumes or whatever are rarely under 30 and many are middle-age-ish. Seems like a lot of people in this thread are 19-year-olds who are barely aware that non-anime cons exist.

Well said. I think you can become too old for anime conventions. Sci-fi/pop culture conventions are more all-ages. You will meet all kinds of people there. It's interesting because many of the older cosplayers have years and years of skill and make their own amazing stuff.

I think cosplay is fine at any age. It really depends on the person and how well they've aged.

>> No.8527843

As far as age ranges go, it all depends on what you wear, and what you do. If you are early 20s and dress as the youngish characters and act silly and do dumb things, that is fine. You can't do the same in your early 30s, but that doesn't mean you can still attend cons and have fun, you just have to adjust your cosplays and the way you present yourself more appropriately.
I know some people who are in their 50s, and still go to cons and still dress up, but they are not wearing Sailor Moon outfits and going to the raves. They are going as the older, dignified characters and presenting themselves that way. Then there are the "con moms and dads" who go with their kids, and dress with them and have a great time. And then there are the ones who are retired, but have been going to cons for years and know the ins and outs better than most, and help to run the cons.
There is no age limit on cosplaying or going to cons, you just have to be aware of what is considered to be socially appropriate for your age.

I'm only a year older than you, but really? You think at 19-23 years old you're suddenly a wise old adult who has figured it all out and is mature enough to handle raising kids? I still feel like a kid myself, I couldn't imagine getting married and starting a family in 3 short years.

And what would you consider an "age-appropriate" hobby for people our age? Are we too old for video games and cartoons too? What a sad and boring life you must lead.

One piece of advice I can give you is to never have the "I'm too old for this and that" mentality. Age is just a number, and we are only put on this Earth for a short amount of time so why end all fun and stop doing things we enjoy just because we're getting older...If it's not socially acceptable it's one thing, but hobbies like cosplay have no set age where you have to give it up. Dressing up is for little kids? Tell us that again once they start replacing adult actors with 10-year-olds in movies and plays because "adults can't wear costumes". To be honest you sound way more immature than the people you're trying to put down.

Most hobbies aren't directly linked to your physical appearance. The ultimate goal you're trying to achieve is to look good while portraying a character. Pretty much everyone here has been on a bad cosplay/cringe thread and have negative thoughts when they see an an overweight cosplayer or someone with a poorly made costume or someone who is just plain ugly. Unless you plan on cod playing older characters, you'll just be as terrible and cringe worthy as these people.

Why do so many people in this thread seem to think that life and fun suddenly stops because you have kids. You don't suddenly change into a different person. You're still going to enjoy the things you enjoy and you'll still have time for them too provided you're not a complete idiot with your life choices.

>too old for anime conventions

The thing is, the reason it seems okay for older people to be at sci-fi and fantasy conventions is because they've been going on for a lot longer. Gaming and comics even more so.

What we're seeing is the natural growth of the first community of the US to grow up with the anime craze all their life. The people who came home and turned on DBZ and Sailor Moon after school are now in their late 20's and early 30's. The people who loved Voltron and the other first big Japanese animations to cross the pawn are in their 40s. If they still love these things, and grew to love the newer animes/mangas as well, their going to anime convention will simply become more and more the norm.

Are you seriously implying that Robert Downey Jr is an accurate representative of the average 50 year old? Celebrities have an army of personal trainers and all the time in the world to stay in shape. Not to mention access to whatever plastic surgery they want on a whim. And a make up team for films/photo shoots. Are you really going to compare that to something like a 30 year old working class mother of two?

No, most of us in the 30+ age range who were big anime fans in the 90s/early 2000s have stopped going to anime cons. Unlike sci-fi, it is a demographic that many people still age out of and has been overwhelmingly teen/20-something for more than a decade. I attended my last anime con at 25, and I was starting to feel old for the crowd. I have a few friends who kept going into their 30s and early 40s, but they're the minority. The rest of us are all still fannish but have moved on to things like Dragon Con and live action/comic book/historical costuming.

Since most anime fans are teenagers and most of the really popular shows appeal to teenagers, you just have to step outside the box and look around a bit. There are appropriate ages for appropriate things people "ought to do". Cosplay is not one of those things you ought to do, at a certain age, it's a fucking hobby that inherently has a place for all tiers of age and craftsmanship, a hobby that some people like and some people don't, usually people considered a little weird anyway.

Not that anon, but there are always exceptions to the rule, but honestly, I don't think Yaya looks old, she's just fug. See pic related. The white girl looks old yeah, but it's not the other three Asian girls with her look any better.

But I think their point is most older Caucasian women don't age very gracefully, and very few keep up a youthful appearance. It just looks off when you're trying to cosplay a 15 year old and you're very clearly 30.
