This is a good example of the types I'm sick of. The ones who treat cosplay in general like normalfag high fashion and acting like there are seasonal trends we should be following. I can't tell you how many times I've posted a con list and had a few people comment on how old the series are as if it's a bad thing. It's like, forgive me for still loving my favorite series even after years and years, instead of just entirely abandoning them to jump ship onto the next "it" series that everyone's going to stop caring about in a year.

I agree in that the outfits and poses aren't sexualized but that doesn't change the fact that the target audience of love live is men. It runs in a seinen comic and the stories in the game when you max level a character all pander to a male audience.
A character doesn't have to be sexual to market to a male audience. In the case of love live it's more of a "Oh I love this girl so much she is so pure and perfect unlike real girls".

Most anime and otaku culture caters to men. I watched Love Live expecting a ton of pandering and it was actually pretty subtle and sweet compared to what I was expecting. Yeah Nozomi grabs boobs but its extremely tame compared to a hot springs scene with naked girls going OMG MICHIKO CHAN YOUR BOOBIES GOT SO BIG OVER THE SUMMER. LL was smart not to alienate their female audience with hyper overt pandering. They actually work hard to improve as performers, you get a sense of a real bond between them, all girls are best girl and there's plenty of songs and cute outfits. I wish we got to see more of other idol groups during season 2 so we could actually feel like there were stakes. It's not super realistic but what anime is?

Unfortunately the way it works in Japan is that pretty much *any* anime is going to have a predominately male fanbase. Generally Idols also do (AKB, Morning musume, etc) so an anime about idols is just going to naturally turn that way.

God knows Aikatsu was NOT MADE FOR MEN AT ALL, but they latched on because thats what fucking male fans to.

I like both LL and im@s, not the other anon. I don't like im@s as much simply because producer feels like a male insert. Also because games are so expensive. I'm not paying $50 for the game without a trial run at least, especially when I can play another idol game for free. Their costume designs are another aspect. Does not look so good in reality.

SU fandom is honestly worse than homestuck. I never really got into it (7k+ pages? No thanks) but I could respect the community. Some artists contributed to the actual comic, composed pieces, and the writer of the comic wasn't afraid to leave his pedestal to learn from his fans. It really seemed like an interactive community. The fandom also has a very relaxed attitude from what I've seen. Sure, the younger cosplayers are wild and uncontrolled, but that holds true for every fandom. Online at least, while spammy, they accepted concrit with little rage. And the fact that there are so many designs per character doesn't hurt.

It's so tumblr it's disgusting. Some of the fandom is okay and similar to the homestuck fandom, but the vocal bad part of the fandom is so much bigger. And they're not even typical bad fandom material (like young teens who just got into the scene).
No, they're crazy SJW types. SU fandom drones on and on about how they're so much better than MLP and how they refuse to become filled with "evil men" like MLP fandom was, and while yes please don't flood the tag with untagged nsfw for the young children, the SU fandom doesn't realize that they do so many things that they criticize of MLP. There's pony nsfw art everywhere untagged. The SU fandom made a seperate tag, but it's unorganized and only some people use it, so nsfw is being left untagged because "oh I tagged with the other tag!" No, google is not going to block your nsfw art from safe search because you tagged it with a SU specific search.

Then there's the whole "everyone who cosplay is beautiful! Fantastic! Great!" and then turn around and cutthroat at Garnet/Amethyst/Rose Quartz cosplayers who aren't black/fat. What happened to everyone can cosplay? Not to mention the chaos about Pearl apparently being "whitewashed". I'm not even kidding, some tumblrinas complained that Pearl made the show white-washed. Other people say that Steven shouldn't be in the show because he turns it into a "typical guy show". What? It's a cast of mostly female heroines, several who are canon in romance, why are you so hung up over the gender of Steven, who even combines with Connine to be agender, trans, or otherwise?
Then there's the SU fake fact blog. The fandom went crazy and sent a bunch of hate to the blog, with many posts authorizing it, because people were fooled by the facts. Every post was tagged #misinformation and the "source" is a gif of hologram pearl smacking her butt. And people were upset because they were fooled by it.

In conclusion, SU is a fun show that is great to watch, well rounded, and should be renamed Singing and Crying. But the fandom had been horribly taken over by little tumblrites, and should be avoided at all costs.

Adding on to both topic you've mentioned.

The thing I like about LL is that it feels more like a sports anime than it does an idol show. The lack of fan service and male insert character(s) definitely help, too. I also just like the character designs in LL more, although Takane from im@s is really cute. I'm a sucker for silver hair.

Steven Universe fandom is awful and terrifying. I've been into Homestuck and Ponies as well and my experiences outside of run ins with crazies have been the following:

>HS: Met a lot of cosplay friends this way. Most people were pretty chill and came from a lot of different interests, background wise.

>MLP:Most people were really sweet and well meaning. Never really ran into porn and most people didn't like it. Mostly discussed the episodes, the writers/writing, the world building, fan works. Grimdark and fetish stuff were looked down upon

>SU: Haven't really found a good place to discuss it online and I know that the fandom is infested with people like pic related. I want to talk about tinfoil theories, not whether or not Amethyst has BPD or whatever

Homestuck was one of those fandoms that could be batshit fucking insane sometimes, but had a lot of friendly people. I know that this is more of a complaint in general, than a trend, but I feel like it's becoming more common with words like "fat-shaming" being unironically used at cons, and generally thirsty people cheering on anyone and afraid to offend.

Not like I don't understand basic economics. I get it, the lower quality product advertises itself as cheaper and easier to get because you know they can't sell it on quality.

But I'm really sick of fat & ugly chicks shitting up sexy cosplays, 18+ panels and just in general any kind of flirtatious interaction between men and women at a con. As a narcissist & a pervert, I can safely say that nobody at a cons wants to take a peek at your vagina beneath your fat rolls (happened to me at a 18+ panel once, thank God I closed my eyes and saved myself the visual trauma) and I hate that the fact that them putting themselves on the market makes it harder for the attractive, "shy" girls to either be dirtier or be more open to flirtation.

And it's not like this doesn't go for men either. Like what in your right mind makes you think you can do a shirtless cosplay when your gut is hanging out?
