I assume OP Is talking about the style espoused by Alice A La Mode, a now defunct magazine that focuses on using Lolita items unconventionally. So to do a la mode is to use lolita pieces in a different way. In the end it may not turn out strictly lolita.

Maybe it's not what OP was going for, but the mag was all I could think of. There also used to be a "daily a la mode" lj community that I think was based on Alice deco but it hasn't been updated in years, looks like.
