>Can the famous Bodyline clock print ever be saved? Or will it always be a modern-day ita staple?
it's possible to make a good coord with it, but i feel that experienced lolitas stay away from it because it's so commonly associated with itas (that and they'd rather buy brand over bodyline when it comes to main pieces).

>Did you have an ita phase? If so, how did you ever outgrow it?
i think i could safely say that i was just nitpick material rather than ita. looking back on past coords, i would swap out things here and there for better pieces if i wore them today. nothing "burn this with fire" worthy, so that's good. i lurked a lot and waited for a long time before i started buying my clothes, so that's probably why i avoided looking ita.

>A common modern-day ita misconception (as we've garnered from this-aint-lolita blog) is "I ~identify~ as lolita so everything i wear is lolita". Where do we draw the line between lolita as a fashion and lolita as an identity?
you draw that line at the start. lolita is a fashion and should be only a fashion. having it as an "identity" is too tumblr-y and goes into cringe territory. you can certainly say that you're a lolita and there's nothing wrong with that, but calling it a part of your "identity" the same way you'd regard your sexuality or career path is... questionable, i feel. maybe i'm just saying that because it's not a huge driving force in my life? it's just one of my hobbies.

Back in high school I bought a tartan JSK from the local goth shop that was waaay too short and paired it with a red cosplay wig and converse boots. Lolita's not an identity, that's dumb. You're only a lolita if you own lolita clothing and you wear it in a way that fits the lolita aesthetic.

>Can the famous Bodyline clock print ever be saved? Or will it always be a modern-day ita staple?
No. Yes.
>Did you have an ita phase?
I don't think so, no. There was one time where I wanted to try to wear a BL skirt to school and I tried to do something more "casual" with it but...no...just no. Thank god I decided to change 5 minutes before leaving my house. I knew it looked bad (purple skirt, teal sleeveless blouse, navy ballet flats with stars on them???) but in my head I was like, no one will care if it matches, no one at school knows about lolita so it'll just be a cute outfit....it definitely was not cute lol.
>If so, how did you ever outgrow it?
I think I sort of lightly glossed over it because I never had enough money at one time to just buy a whole coherent outfit, and if I did put something together (like mentioned above) I knew it looked bad and that I was just trying to shoehorn stuff together. So I would buy one thing, then wait a long time, then buy another, repeat. During the swaths of time that it took me to buy stuff, I just lurked and read a LOT. I would read concrit of outfits and see how it would fit in, ask questions, and just soak it all up. IMO I also have a pretty decent fashion sense outside of the fashion so I think certain things I could figure out on my own like certain colors and themes not going with other colors and themes.
>A common modern-day ita misconception (as we've garnered from this-aint-lolita blog) is "I ~identify~ as lolita so everything i wear is lolita". Where do we draw the line between lolita as a fashion and lolita as an identity?
This idea irritates me so much. I think it's also because people get the idea that your outfit can be 'lolita-ish' or have that 'feel' to it. You can be a football fan that knows a thousand and one stats, facts, and rules of the game, own all sorts of jerseys and equipment, but if you don't actually play the game, you aren't a football player - just a fan.

Tbh I never saw the appeal in that dress. Same with that 2spooky gawff dress BL just put out. I had someone try to point it out to me like it was super cute and I'm like "ehhhhh". Only BL dress I really care about is soft cream but we know that will never restock because Mr. Yuck hates doing things that actually make sense (like bringing back those strawberry bags)
>Did you have an ita phase?
Uhh, kinda? I admired lolita from a far for so many years that I had more time to really let my tastes grow and develop without spending money on stupid crap (the most "ita" thing I own is squirrel party and I kind of bought it on a whim during the BL sale)
I was what some would consider an "ita" in another fashion though, but that was more a consequence of not having a job/building up a wardrobe slowly/thinking any normie clothes in the colors I associated the fashion with would work lmao
>A common modern-day ita misconception (as we've garnered from this-aint-lolita blog) is "I ~identify~ as lolita so everything i wear is lolita". Where do we draw the line between lolita as a fashion and lolita as an identity?
I think it's stupid and personally don't get it. If you wear lolita every day, good for you. If you think throwing on s blouse and pastel jeans is still " lolita" because you're "a lolita in your heart" than that's a pretty big indicator that you're at the least an obnoxious special snowflake, probably.

I don't think it can really be saved, but I do think it's possible for someone to make a good coord of it. I've seen a couple of non-ita-tier coords but nothing outstanding. Idk it could happen tho.

>Did you have an ita phase?
Sort of, but nothing as horrendous as most of what's pictured here. My first dress actually WAS the clock print, but my issue was that I always made things too simple with my coords in the beginning. I like to think I have a decent grasp on fashion and balance tho.

>If so, how did you ever outgrow it?
Read a ton of concrit on other outfits and "how not to be ita" guides, and started trying to model my outfits after lolitas known for having nicer coords.

>Where do we draw the line between lolita as a fashion and lolita as an identity?

If you never wear lolita but feel in your heart that you're a lolita, you're NOT a lolita. Participate in the fashion, actually give a shit about improving, until you stop lurking and start collecting actual lolita pieces and wearing them, I don't think you can claim the "lolita identity".

Look we could argue about the book and the term all day but nymphet comes from a look defined by prepubescent/pubescent girls with a sexualized image. Nymphet means "girl who stirs sexual and sensual thoughts with her personality and appearance".
It started as sexual and as a fetish. Not everyone who wears it does it for sexual or fetish purposes, but that's where its origins are. You are intentionally imitating the look of some of the most famous sexualized little girls out there.

>Did you have an ita phase?
For far too long.
>If so, how did you ever outgrow it?
I discovered lolita in early high school and could only get a single item (dress, blouse, shoes) on my birthday or christmas, and it had to be only something my mother approved of. It sucked but thankfully I was a lone lolita and no photos exist.

I got a job and started buying nice things I wanted, learned about coording, what looks good on my body, makeup, a lot of things thanks to cgl because I didn't want to be laughed at by other lolitas when I started being social.
>A common modern-day ita misconception (as we've garnered from this-aint-lolita blog) is "I ~identify~ as lolita so everything i wear is lolita". Where do we draw the line between lolita as a fashion and lolita as an identity?

The line is drawn exactly at the clothes and the aesthetic. You must have a minimum of one actual lolita outfit (full, not a dress), that you have worn. If it has not been worn for a year or more you WERE a lolita.

I've seen a lot of cute coords with it. It's a really lovely dress, it's just unfortunate that newbies flocked to it, initially because of the ~steampunk~ appeal. I own it in grey myself and it's really nice casual dress with a black bolero and reasonably plain accessories.

That's not a modern ita misconception at all. I remember years ago people on LJ claiming they were "lolita at heart" or followed the "lolita lifestyle" despite not owning so much as an ita lace monster. Lolita is a fashion first. If you want to admire it and wear stuff inspired by it, cool, just don't call it Lolita.

I think bittersweet or lolita's version of pastel goth can definitely be a thing (maybe not creepycute with stupid eyeball bows everywhere. Perhaps disfigured bunny prints might come under guro), it's just the ones who tend to swing for a niche style tend to be itas and/or short of cash. I definitely don't think any old print or motif in pastel and black works (some are thematically redundant or look plain gaudy) and there needs to be a balance of elements of both styles. Sweet prints that just look nice in black are just that, a toned down sweet look with a different color palatte rather than mixing a dark and cute feel/motifs. Thing is pieces that would work fantastically for this style (like Holy Lantern) aren't always easy to come by. As someone who got into lolita from victorian-tinged western gothic fashion but had her pastel phase before Tumbr existed, some of that stuff really floats my boat.

I worry I will forever be walking that thin line between ita and lolita. I got into it in 2004 when what was available to the western market (and a child) was questionable at best but when I got a hold of the first GLB I became aware that not all lolita was black and white, solid colors or maid-y. There is also a huge mental disconnect between new and old school lolita for me. New school tends to use completely different colors, fabrics, cuts and experiments with other time periods for influence. The rules of what offbrand items you can bring in (poorfag here) are very different. Whilst some things would not be considered 'lolita-looking' enough in 2008-9, they must also be of considerable quality today. The overall look has drifted far away from a victorian doll and I find myself torn (in terms of my taste and spending) between chasing the aesthetic I liked when I was 12 and attempting to follow the current trends of opulence and elegance. There's those questionable urges to wear maxi pad headdresses, frilly UTKs, ears, aprons and anything with a solid base color and white lace/trim. I kind of feel like my style is all over the place and I'm slowly letting go of some of the habits/items I amassed in the early days that just won't fly now.

There's nothing inherently ita about oldschool, or any of the 'outdated' trends that you have listed, some people say striped socks are ita and the whole thing with cat ears but these people are western noobs who don't know how the japanese market actually works or that brands have been putting out this stuff for years and will continue to do so. I agree with you about the overall aesthetic of lolita has shifted slightly but there will always be a place for oldschool and it will continue to evolve, I've seen some amazing oldschool coords with newschool items incorporated (like chiffon), maybe you could try the other way around and incorporate oldschool opulence with newschool quality? Or just keep doing your thing if you do it well, there isn't ever enough oldschool love in my opinion!

Lose the ageplay cutsew, it looks like it was made for a 5 year old.

Get better tights, the plain black ones look like you're wearing shorts over pants.
When you find a different suitable top, tuck it in. The trousers are high waisted for a reason.

>Did you have an ita phase?
Oh god yes I had. I was around the age of 13~14 when I first discovered lolita (back in 2005/2006). I didn't know a thing about brands, all I cared about was looking at all these pretty dresses. My first dress, of course, was some Ebay lacemonster.
Pic related; it's from one of my first cons ever.

>If so, how did you ever outgrow it?
A (half?)year later I started doing more research and I learned about brands. I used a middleman service to buy from Yahoo! Japan Auctions, where I ordered my first brand items.
I haven't been into lolita anymore since 2010/2011 though. It was a short period for me which I enjoyed but I kinda had the feeling to 'move on to the next thing'. I sold a lot of stuff, but the only thing I'm really latched to is my first AP top ever; I don't think I will ever be able to sell it.

I feel like it'll just keep its place in the Bodyline Ita Wardrobe Staples collection like squirrel party and what I can only assume that unicorn print will be in a few months given the hype-letdown it created. You can show as many good coords as possible but that won't change the number of itas that will continue posting their shit coords.
>Did you have an ita phase?
Kind of? I was p well-versed in conventional fashion rules so the only hard part was getting down the "everything is one theme" thing. I did own that bear bodyline dress in the beginning, though, but thank god it didn't' fit right.
>If so, how did you ever outgrow it?
It helps I was on cgl before I actually bought anything, so that whole an ounce of prevention is greater than a pound of cure saying really applies. For the rest though, the best way to stop being ita is to let other people boss you around a little bit. Take criticism as an attempt to help, and don't immediately treat it as an attack.
>A common modern-day ita misconception (as we've garnered from this-aint-lolita blog) is "I ~identify~ as lolita so everything i wear is lolita". Where do we draw the line between lolita as a fashion and lolita as an identity?
Identity politics have gone Way out of hand and imho you're not lolita if ur not wearing it (or obviously if your horrible/misguided parents named you after the subject of a book publicly misconstrued as a pedophile's wet dream.) If you want to wear other outfits with lolita pieces, all power to you, just make sure it doesn't look like shit, recognize whether it fits the rules of lolita or not and tag accordingly. It's not hard.

The print itself does not need "saving" - it is a solid print but people often coord it badly. It's not a staple, but due to the design it is more common that it will be ita.
>Did you have an ita phase?
Yes
>If so, how did you ever outgrow it?
I am just starting to. It pretty much consisted of my expanding my wardrobe to the point where I can coord with ease, I used to have a lot of problems with shoes not matching well but I got some base pairs that look good with most of my dresses now.
>A common modern-day ita misconception (as we've garnered from this-aint-lolita blog) is "I ~identify~ as lolita so everything i wear is lolita". Where do we draw the line between lolita as a fashion and lolita as an identity?
Identity politics are disgusting and I wish they would burn and die. The word has been forever soured in my eyes. Lolita as an "identity" seems ridiculous, but I would say that I am a lolita (which is pretty much the same thing as saying I identify as one) so I guess it is not so much... Someone can decide she is a lolita at any point, but don't say you "identify" as one. Just please no. Saying identity is (to me) a very noncommittal term. It's like "I think I am this but idk so i just say that word so if people don't think i am i don't need to justify it"

>A common modern-day ita misconception (as we've garnered from this-aint-lolita blog) is "I ~identify~ as lolita so everything i wear is lolita". Where do we draw the line between lolita as a fashion and lolita as an identity?
Lolita isn't an identity. Being a nostalgic weeb might be an identity but lolita isn't (at least nowadays in the west it isn't).
And every time someome says they are "a lolita" as an identity they just mean they want to feel cuter than the other girls.

I'm saying a lot of bodyline prints are too often poorly coorded/not worn with a blouse and the ita stigma is always going to be there, not to mention balloon bears isn't exactly the hallmark of good taste. I've seen a few cute squirrel party coords, but for every one of them, I've seen eight that are just plain bad. Anyways, believe it or not, researching lolita at least a little bit before purchasing the clothing tends to create better results if you don't have a ton of money than blowing all your cash on skeleton tights and squirrel party (though it didn't save me from that damned cotton-candy twintail wig) It does help that I didn't immediately start dressing in lolita when I was initially interested in the fashion at 13 because I am without a doubt sure I'd have a picture of pizza faced me in a black and white lace abomination hidden away somewhere. I'll admit still I do have a lot to learn, but that being said, lack of decent color coordination and just generally not listening are what really dooms most itas, not "daring to be different" in a niche subculture with fairly strict rules that's full of notoriously catty women.
Also I forgot to say Constructive criticism but you miss a few things when writing in such a small box.

Replace lace with decent lace, do something about the bangs, wear plain black OTKs with black shoes, do something about sad bows, and add decent makeup (blush, eyeshadow, remove monster brows) and it would look decent.
In short, change pretty much everything and it might work as plain oldschool.

Oh god, her expression. I hope she realises it's not very lolita to stare dramatically off-camera as a BGM plays in her head. Also, which part of that did she think is lolita? All I see are shorts over shorts, some weird maid-inspired shirt, and weirdass sleeves. It looks more like terrible cosplay.
