Hi guys, I'm working on a cosplay at the moment and I tried this method out. I wanted to make some pyramid shaped spikes and include metal loops in them so I can attach them later and take them off easily, at first I tried it with sculptey but it was way too annoying to get it just right. So I made a mold out of thick paper and then inserted a layer of parchment wax paper, and filled the whole thing with hot glue. Later on I will paint them, so the current look doesn't matter, only the shape does. Works out pretty good for me, I just wanted to share this with you guys.

What do you think of it?

I think it looks awesome! How time consuming is it? I appreciate all the cleanliness and detail you put in so it doesn't look like a hot mess.

>> No.8495648

As long as you don't wear it in any particularly warm weather, I think this looks decent.

>> No.8495658

I'm pretty sure they won't last long, OP. Why didn't you just cast them out of resin?

Hot glue is great for this kind of stuff. Your only real problem is trying to make something too big; it's not very stiff.

I've got some pieces that are ten years old; finish and paint them properly and they'll last forever.

Looks great!

I'd try bending the ends of the metal loops a bit, to help them not get pulled out if the spikes get warm. I'd also be sure to seal the back when painting.

>> No.8495862

Amazing. I like this a lot. What will you use for sealing?

>> No.8495870

Hey OP, have you tested the weight difference between a hot glue piece and a resin piece?

except neither of those fit this? if you want board generals so badly go to /vg/

Do they get dented easily? Glue seems like such a malleable thing that a bump into a door handle could deform the spike.

did you just warm up the hot glue sticks and poured it in or did you squeeze it out of the hot glue gun

>> No.8499152

OP here, sorry I wasn't replying.

>>8495557
The most time consuming thing was measuring everything correctly so the metal loops were in the correct place and such. The pouring procedure itself is very fast and you just have to wait like 20 minutes to half an hour for it to be completely cooled out.

>>8495862
I wasn't quite sure if I needed sealing and since this is my first time trying this method out I will be just painting them with chrome spraypaint and then adding a layer of clear coat.

>>8495870
I haven't, mainly due to the fact that I actually haven't used resin before. But I do want to get into resin usage as well. Each spike weighs only about as much as a small hot glue stick anyway so I think everything should work out.

>>8496315
They don't get dented easily at all, they are actually quite solid. If you can try to get a hold of a new hot glue stick and try messing with that, because the each spike is just as hard as one of those sticks, except each spike is even thicker.

>>8496326
Since each spike isn't giant I just used the hot glue gun directly and squeezed it into the form, which also gave me a bit more control when it came to evenly distributing the glue, as the corners didn't always want to completely fill towards the top.

wow these are awesome! I'm so gonna use this method. so hot glue doesn't stick to was paper right?

He said parchment wax paper...
Those are two very different things but I would assume parchment paper since it's silicone coated and I've had wax paper melt into food before.

Thanks. I think I want to experiment. Since they sell colored glue. Might be fun to experiment on some other geometric shapes. I have parchment wax paper and a bunch of hot glue already. I'd like to see about trying and making some faux gems and give them a gloss coat. Might be a good idea for less clear stuff like Pearl's gem from Steven universe.
