Once went to a Homestuck Q&A years ago and the Karkat got so nervous about the amount of people that attended the panel that she threw up on the table and had to be escorted out. Then the Jade had a panic attack because apparently she had emetophobia. All within the first 10 minutes of the panel.

This girl in my community used to host a "How to get a con BF/GF" panel at literally every con and all it was was an hour of her humblebragging about all the guys that wanted to date her and how she has huge tits (but don't bring them up~). She also kept mentioning that she was moving to Korea.

Kitacon Transformers panel where they were showing the first ep or two of Transformers Prime.

Didn't have proper speakers so they put the microphones supplied for them to speak into right up to their laptops speakers so you could barely hear the audio.

Ep starts, they say 'sorry for The Rock being in this' never mind that most people don't give a shit that Dwayne Johnson is in it and actually want to hear his dialogue (Cliffjumper) that they so rudely spoke over.

I remember the Attack on Titan panel at AX 2013 was so packed and there were so many questions that were so easily answered had people paid attention to what was actually going on or were familiar with the source material. I don't even like AoT anymore but jfc some of the fans in that room...

> "Hey I know this is an Attack on Titan panel, but can I ask about Highschool of the Dead"
> Three people ask the same question within 7 minutes of one another
>"WHERE DID YOU GET THE IDEA TO MAKE THIS? WERE YOU TROUBLED OR SOMETHING?"
> He is the director of the anime
> They even fucking said, before the Q&A began, that the team was given references from the manga-ka for what to keep in mind
> "Why did you change Hanji into a female when they are very androgynous in the manga?"
> "Hey so I have been reading the manga can you tell us spoilers?"
> "HEY SO HOW DID YOU GET THIS IDEA TO MAKE THIS ANIME"
> at one point a cosplayer ran down the aisle from the back of the room and
> planted themself infront of Danny Choo and the director

On a smaller, less horrible one but still kind of annoying

> Skullgirls Panel AX 2015
> Unfortunately panel ran late so they jumped to Q&A
> Stupid questions
> "So I heard the game is doing pretty okay in Japan, but how is it doing in Japan?"
> wha.. didn't you just answer your own question
> One guy speaks really loudly into the mic
> "SO ELIZA IS THE ONLY CHARACTER WHO DOESN'T HAVE SPECIFIC WIN QUOTES AGAINST THE OTHER CHARACTERS WHY IS THAT"
> "Well she does, doesn't she?" panelist looking at each other
> attendee giving them attitude "NO, SHE DOESN'T"

There was a trivia game. They asked odd questions, some about Persona 1/2. Which most people did not play. IIRC one of the hosts called the audience something negative when no one could answer. It was either stupid or retarded. One of the audience members actually had some knowledge of all the Persona games and they'd get snarky with him since he was the only one really answering those questions. Also, as the panel went on and there wasn't much going on (no prizes for the trivia after all), people started to leave. I didn't think anything of it since some people probably had another panel to go to or whatever. The hosts went on like "Psh, what a bunch of losers, not sticking around" and whatnot. I found it rude.

>Pile into the room. People on the floor, in the isles, chattering away and dying to know what the fuck this is. Everyone is super pumped.
>A lone girl in furry ears and unrecognizable cosplay meanders up to the stage and begins fiddling with papers. She slides a piece of uncolored Wolf's Rain yaoi fanart onto the projector and takes the mic.
>"Yeah so there was a misprint in the program guide. This is actually "Draw It Yourself Bukkake."
>Immediately 1/3 of the room gets up and leaves.
>Stick it out because we sat in line for an hour, how bad can this be?
>For half an hour this chick slides pic after pic of her Wolfs Rain yaoiz onto the projector and describes what makes it an "interesting" piece of art. Goes into great detail about her OC (who she is dressed as) who makes an appearance in half of them.
>Everyone looks like they want to die until she passes out paper and suggests that we draw our own yaois.

I only ever attended two panels

1) League of legends "crazy builds" panel. The builds they were proposing for the game were already legitimate builds in the game. The panelists then revealed they hadn't played the game in the year and had no idea these "crazy builds" were legit and popular for months.

Upside was that they had a pretty fun game set up, and the audience basically took over the panel. One of the panelists was trying really hard to be interactive, the other guy was quiet and would barely speak.

2) Sailor moon panel.

They had a LOT of issues with audio and video. and it seemed like their entire panel was revolving around the audio and visual shit. After like 10 minutes of struggling they gave up and just tried doing a game/discussion.

EXCEPT that they were really really REALLY soft spoken. The panel room wasnt big, but over the murmuring of other people around it was literally impossible to hear them. If they even projected their voices SLIGHTLY it would have been better.

Those were my first two and only two experiences with panels. It seems like any time i ask friends about the panels they go to they never say its any good either.

My con going experience is now basically watching some shows, going to photoshoots and the dealers room. Maybe a gameroom if there's something good.

I attended a hetalia panel and at one point in the panel this guy in an snk jacket walks in and stands near the door for some time.
> panelists are asked to quote mean girls
> they all say they haven't watched it
> Guy chirps up "I HAVE" and start walking towards the panelists, I figured he wanted to take the mic from them and start actually quoting mean girls
> one of the panelists save the others by quoting the movie and the guy then stops on his route towards them and goes back to the wall
> mfw

99% of the time the kids hosting the panel don't even know what we're talking about. Responses run the gamut from breaking character to tell us we're being rude, to actually attempting to answer our questions based solely on shit they've probably learned from tumblr.

My favorite thing to do when there's a Japan and a Germany on the panel is ask whether or not they consider a comparison of Unit 731 and its victimization of mass numbers of Chinese and Russian detainees to the medical torture performed on Jews and various minoities by the Nazi party during the Holocaust to be valid or not. Most of the time the Japan hasn't even heard of Unit 731, while the Germany does a lot of apologizing for the Holocaust. It's fun to watch them squirm.

Can panelists please stop calling people out for leaving in the middle of a panel? There are a million reasons why someone would need to excuse themselves, and it's really shitty and unprofessional for a panel leader to call them out. All it does is make that person look like an ass and the person leaving have a distaste for them afterwards. Also, y'know, maybe that person IS leaving because their panel genuinely sucks, in which case, the panelist has no ground making fun of anyone but themselves.

there is a certain level and an understanding too: if you went in to a Mega 64 panel, you know what your getting into, but they have somesort of understanding as to what their limits are too.

something most people don't have and instead of making it funny, it's annoying as fuck and obnoxious. Smart comedians work within the parameters given and make it work. Joe Blow running a panel has 0 clue as to how comedy works and instead of working around a perimeter, they break it and tread on their personal space thinking its the funniest shit ever.

The panel turned out to be a humblebragging and namedropping session where the panelist was like "oh look you in the back. You are my friend" and asked them to come on the stage to hold all the props one at the time while the panelist was all "mm-hm. I made that." We left in the middle of the panel and the panelist said something like "haha yeah they couldn't handle my skills" and the panelists friends laughed. I have a bad temper so I just answered without thinking something along the lines of "well If I needed to come and see your friends holding your props I could have checked your facebook feed." >Have all game mechanics worked out, everything is carefully contrived and deliberately done
>Have cue music for when someone is going to die
>Have a volunteer willing to turn lights on/off when they hear the music start up
>Get to con on Friday, find staff and ask about lights
>Told we have to get permission to turn them on/off for that panel, but they'll get permission for us to have control for that one hour
>Check up on things Saturday and we're good to go for lights, we're told
>Sunday, panel time
>Go to con staff an hour before panel to double double check about how lights work
>Told the rooms don't have individual light control and we can't turn them off
>Explain we have a murder mystery panel that hinges on lights being off so we can "kill" characters
>Get told "too bad, make it work"
>Embarrassingly have to explain the situation to the audience and tell them, "when you hear the music" turn around
>Halfway through that's just not working
>We're doing Death Note style heart attacks at this point

Turned out okay, audience seemed to be fine with it (no big exodus) and loved the panel, but still, it was just such a defeat to have it all planned out, told the con way in advance and checked up every day, and then told at the last minute, "Oh, btw, we lied when we said you could control the lights."

Had the same thing happen for the Fashion show at AX last year. We couldn't turn the lights all the way off because it would kill power in the lounge next door too. Yeah. It really did turn out, thanks to our audience being good sports, but it's difficult when you've already given out specific info to your actors (who we were trying to keep in the dark about the killer so it would be a real experience) who suddenly find out they need to fake a heart attack.

My co-panelist is doing the panel again this year and at least from the start, she knows to do a workaround for the lights issue. It was definitely a weird situation. This is also the con that, 2 years in a row, has ignored my request for a second table. We run a game show and need the table for our contestants.

Then one of the NHK guys (who didn't speak English and didn't know we couldn't turn them off) went over and shut them off anyway (I guess to be all "I don't see the problem here guys the light switch is right there") even though we were all making Xs with our arms and yelling NO STOP in Japanese across the room. Then the people from the lounge came over and started trying to beef with us because we cut their lights.

Maybe have the VA do a FAQ with the top 10 most asked questions and post it on the con website and refer people to it if they ask one of the questions? They could reference it at the beginning of the Q&A?

Or have people write their questions and drop them in a hat and let the VA choose the ones they want to answer? Or have a write-in in the con forum/have a FB thread on the con page in the month leading up to the con and let the VA choose from those to answer?

It was downright ridiculous. I wouldn't mind it so much if people were respectful about it. "Hey, sorry but i actually prefer (insert pronoun), thanks." This same girl also wanted us to color code the attendee badges for people who didn't like hugging/touching. Let that process a moment. She wanted Red badges to signal "No, don't hug/touch me", Yellow to signal "I'm ok with some physical interaction", and Green to symbolize "I'm ok with hugs/touch". I get where she was going with this but to have EVERY badge like this we're looking at many people going back in reg lines just to change out colors. You might start out as red, then decide "Hey i'm fine with people hugging me." then you have to go back in line to get another badge. Wish people realized the financial end of it. I don't have exact numbers on hand but you're looking at thousands of dollars. You'd have to purchase enough of each color for every attendee just in case. That's just such a waste of money in my opinion because we might not even go through all of those badges. Then we're stuck getting rid of them at the end of the year. That money can be alloted into something else. We're not a large con so we don't necessarily have a large amount of cash to just throw at anything. Money is only half of the problem. >She contacts indy pop con staff and asks about meeting markiplier

>pretty sure most of them have seen her fb page which is covered in everything markiplier
>she posts on our cons fan page
>asks what we think this indypopcon staffer meant by "not getting too excited"

Oh and she also asked our con staffers if she should say anything to markiplier personally, to get him to come to our con. She just went overboard with everything.
I now hate markiplier.

Not a horror story, but I wanted to share anyway because I thought it was pretty funny

>Doug Walker (aka nostalgia critic) Q&A
>congoer A mentions the bat credit card from batman and robin (nostalgiacritic inside joke pretty much)
>doug gets up and starts chasing congoer A while congoer A runs away like mad
>people start cheering
>doug borrows a sword from congoer B
>catches up to congoer A and pretends to kill her with the sword
>makes a victory pose
>people go completely apeshit cheering and laughing

It was pretty entertaining since the rest of the panel was a bit dull and full of people asking long ass questions or telling their life stories in broken english. Doug was a cool dude though. He even politely shut up the ones who started to really ramble on about irrelevant stuff.

I'd be more uncomfortable having to pick a badge than not... Whether I want to talk to someone depends entirely on my mood at the time, how busy I am at the moment, and who that person is. And I can see creepy people using someone wearing a green badge as an excuse to creep on them, then getting mad when the other person does not want to talk to them, since they were wearing green. But not wearing green will just make people avoid you... Either way I can see awkward situations arising from this.

I guess it might be good for some socially awkward people, but the main reason I wouldn't want this is because I'm slightly socially awkward and this whole thing just seems really embarrassing.

In the case of mandatory pronoun cards, they're not even good for trans people. They could potentially out a trans person who is early in transition and doesn't pass as their preferred gender yet, calling attention to them. This could lead to them being judged, harassed, and in extreme cases, could even lead to violence against them. So some trans people would either be forced to lie, or risk their own safety.

My best friend and I were invited to a character Q&A panel for an upcoming con because we cosplayed side characters to a shoot. We figured sure why not and I exchanged info with the girl in charge. When she made the fb page, she'd put another girl in my friend's spot; I asked her about it and she changed the name, saying she spoke with the girl.

Planning goes pretty strangely, everyone decided to do a giveaway but nobody wanted to contribute more than maybe $15 apiece; I offered $30, but because I was also working a booth in the dealer's room I said someone would need to get the money from me to buy the items. No one volunteered online, and no one came to the booth. Their loss.

Went to the panel with my friend and got "where are your items?" from the host, even though I told them I couldn't get them. Then we noticed that the original girl casted in my friend's spot was there, in cosplay, in a panel seat. (What?) Asked the host, reply was "Well just deal with it, I don't know what to do".

And then question number two was "Why are there two of them?" We had to make up some bullshit cloning/spawnchild story, but overall the rest of the panel went smoothly. Then the giveaway came, and here's where all the shit just got full on stupid.

>> No.8509083

So they had all of 2 items related to the fandom sitting on the table, along with a few random things, many of which were pre-owned (someone's old plush, 5 volumes of a shoujo manga, a charm from something else). Then they raffled off the 5 volume set per-volume, and then told everyone that the large plush was actually one of the panelists' and not up for raffle. A ton of people were mad so the other panelists said "come find us during the con and we'll buy you something else." From a con of 20k people. Not even possible. So I came up with an idea, the rest of the panelists agreed - people could come by and trade their items at my booth, but the other panelists would have to bring their items early. They said they would.

Next morning rolls by as I headed to get my own items and I get a call saying people are already asking for me at the booth. I told them to tell everyone to come back in 2 hours, and I asked online if the panelists were bringing their items/when. Nobody replies. So to be safe, I went ahead and bought $75 worth of little figurines and charms for people to swap.

Two hours later, people come back and none of the panelists show up. So I end up trading most of the figurines and the other items, (I maybe had $15 left of the items that didn't get swapped out.) So after the con, I asked if people could give me maybe $5 or so to make up for the extra (we had 6-7 other people on the panel) and one girl just says "You didn't have to spend that much", and I explained that almost everyone traded their items. No more replies.

The host says she'll give me $30 (fair enough, I decide to just accept it) and asked if I could wait a little. I thought she just needed another paycheck.

EIGHT MONTHS LATER, after doing another panel with her at a new con two trips out of the country, and her going to at least 3 other cons, she finally pays me back. Then asks if I still had the items people traded. And that was just the first panel with her.

Bit of background: I've worked local cons since 2006, and last year at $largeVegasCon1 was the first time I'd actually gone as an attendee since 2007, and even in 2007, I'd only attended 2.
For two of the cons I work, I spend the convention almost exclusively in the dealers/vendors room, and one of them, I run. Of the two, the anime con is completely gung ho regarding bootlegs, and seeks to stop them from showing up in our room (there's a couple of small stories on those).
As a result, I and another member of the dealers room staff decided to put on a bootleg identification panel in order to educate our attendees. So far it's been run twice, and both attracted a fairly decent crowd. I was gifted a box of confiscated items to demo, and the collection has grown over time as people hand me their bootleg items, and the PowerPoint file has even made it to conventions I've never attended (Share and share alike :) ).
On the heels of success from the first year, I decided to revamp the presentation and make it all pretty, and also decided to lighten my load of things to bring and carry by running it off of a Raspberry Pi, as demos of the white background version had gone fairly well.
During submission, you are given the option to specify output requirements, such as HDMI. This was ignored, and the component video cable in the room did not work immediately. That was problem one, and was eventually sorted out by a member of the A/V staff2 offering me their laptop.
By this time, we're halfway through the allotted time, and have been winging it, because thankfully we both knew the material well.
However, even with the use of the beefier hardware of the laptop (compared to the Pi), the presentation was lagging hard, which I have attributed to the proprietary PowerPoint format, since it was created on a Windows PC in PowerPoint, and being run in the LibreOffice equivalent on Linux.
