then there are three possibilities.
Airsoft if you want "realistic" shootings, the bad thing about that is the safety googles
Then you can have nerf weapons which is less realistic, shorter distance, but doesn't need any safety equipment.
The third option is use weapons without any projectiles, this will need a lot of trust between the players, and a grown up mentality, but then again this way you can use just black powder pistols with blank shots, or just little toys that make sound whit pic related, I don't know what they are called in english

Oh sure, those don't hurt much while they singe out your cornea. I'd still suggest goggles. And to not use such things at close range.

I'm not saying that they are completely safe, I mean if anything remains in the barrel you probably kill someone with it. But still, there are larps that use this method, mostly around scandinavia. (also I think they use less powder, so not a full blank)

And apart from brandon lee there is a story about how a russian reenactor in one event left the cleaning rod in his musket when he fired with a blank and the cleaning rod went through a guy, killing him. So yeah, these things are dangerous if you aren't doing your safety checks

Where should I buy my rapier for SCA? I've been in for about three months now, and it's time to grab a rapier. I've handled darkwoods and they all feel a bit heavy to me, but perhaps that's because I practice with a loaner blade that has a 35" blade and a cup hilt.

Silk is light, so silk clothing tends to be for summer. But if you have a piece of clothing designed for a certain temperature range, it will not be nicer to wear on a hot day when made in silk. In fact silk sticks to sweaty skin like a MF! Unlike cotton or flax.

That's factory protective grease. It's pretty gross and doesn't come off easily.
Rolling it in a barrel of sand is the traditional way. I don't know this from personal experience, but I think some people have cleaned it/kept the rust off it by buying sand from a hardware store along with a large bin with a sealable lid. Then shake.
Best to get someone else to help you if you plan on trying that, though.
I've also heard of people soaking it in solvents, but I have no idea what kinds or if that is safe for the maille.

KR's "ancestry" puts them at second-generation from NERO, actually. NERO -> LAIRE -(multiple splitoffs including)> KR.

Yeah, it's actually the most rules-heavy game in the US I can think of short of the IFGS. However, it works surprisingly well, their standards kick Alliance/NERO square in the balls when it comes to running a game, and the rules bloat generally comes in chunks a specific player needs to know about abilities specific to their PC.

They also dodged a lot of the bullets that utterly kill NERO- hyperinflated game economies that only make magic items worth anything, PCs die (and stay dead) on a regular basis, and scaling isn't so insane that a newbie is useless and the "ubers" trample all over the plot. Likewise, they've been smart enough to encourage PC vs PC rivalries.

And that's from someone who regularly played their "father", LAIRE. They made that game so successful even going with the mega-rulebook-from-hell, they bought the whole place and now rent it out to Dystopia Rising, LAIRE, and Realms of Adventure.

And they keep putting money back into the site to improve it for everyone else. You may hate the pile-o-rules, but it's clearly worked for them.

plot NPCs are used whenever a specific storyline calls for them, that might be a recurring role but usually it's a lot of different short time roles

town NPCs have a set character in the town and are more or less a players but with a preset concept defined by the organizers, they are pretty free to do what they wish within these bounds though afaik

kupfer npcs are part of the copper camp. Many of them have long term characters that are almost player like. The camp however has a relatively strict concept which you have to follow and the higher echolons might get more or less direct orders from the organizers sometime if the plot calls for it

it's not a camp per se, and certainly doesn't work like the open camps (dragon camps+chaos) but you can join the town as a player.

whether player or NPC you will have to clear it with the organizing team of the town first, mostly I think because their space is relatively limited and they simply can't take anyone, and atop of that of course want to make sure your concept fits.

To be fair, it's not exactly turn-based. You don't have to wait for them to attack, you just have to pause and give them the window. If they don't take it, you're usually free to resume your attack. The purpose is usually to prevent people from flailing wildly with their ultralights and overwhelming their opponents that way.

Not that I'm defending it, mind you. It's still a fucking retarded rule.

This rule is what happens when you've got players that machinegun swings constantly and beyond the apparent control of the game-runners.

Personally, I prefer the one-step rule. You hit someone? They have to roleplay reacting the hit and take a step back. You hit them again so fast that they can't? They don't take the hit for additional damage.

Helps in a lot of boffer games from preventing idiotic "death hugs", especially in high-HP systems where someone can just clinch up and drumroll an inferior opponent to death otherwise.

I'm the worse offender of not bringing weapons other than a dagger, and now that i started a new larp with more ''random encounters'' i got myself a shortsword.

Damn i hate walking around with unused weapons.

Actually...i just hate walking around.

I just hate walking in general.

Fuck walking. somebody get me one of those wal mart people buggy.

I've heard terrible, terrible things about amtgard. My understanding is that it's basically run by overweight old men who make rules specifically so they can compete with healthier, younger people. Like "enchanted armor" that is invulnerable to everything except a special magic sword. Naturally, only the falt old farts have either so they can just walk up to the newbies and wail on them with impunity.

I also hate the fact that there are class/level restrictions. If I have the skill or ability to pull off a maneuver or technique then I should be allowed to do it regardless of any class or level bullshit.

If I remember correctly, you have to reach a certain level (knight) to play a paladin or an anti-paladin, but you can play any other class in the game even as a newbie.

Enchanted Armor is a spell that has to be granted to said fat old fart by a high-level spellcaster, and it's temporary, but it does exist. The balance aspect is that fat old fart wearing armor (because you have to actually be wearing armor to have Enchanted Armor put onto it) can't give it to himself because spellcasters are forbidden armor. If it just so happens that fat old fart's team lacks a spellcaster high enough in level to cast the Enchanted Armor spell, then he's not going to have it. Also, being a fat old fart with a bunch of stuff is meaningless if the newbies are faster and can just keep away from him.

The class restrictions make sense, for the most part, because every class has its inbuilt disadvantage or a vulnerability. My only real issue was with weapon restrictions because the class I played disallowed several I'd been wanting to try out and I didn't want to play a different class just to wield a specific weapon when it was the combination of that weapon and my played class abilities that I wanted to test.

As for levels, well, if you're thoroughly dedicated and can pass your level tests, you can max out a class in levels in about five months of playing every weekend. If anything, I always felt like that was too swift.

You have to actually be Knighted to have access to Paladin and Anti-Paladin, and getting a Knighthood in Amtgard isn't easy and takes years and years of being a Squire (because you have to have a sponsoring Knight put your name in for consideration to the Kingdom's Circle of Knights to be recommended for Knighthood if you meet all the requirements) and busting your ass in whatever field of Knighthood you're working towards (there are 4 different Knighthoods, combat only being one of them) until you've got the cred.

Of course, politics is also involved: there's nothing worse than being Squire to a Knight that's made themselves disliked by the other Knights, and they refuse to accept your recommendation for Knighthood because they hate your Knight). I knew a guy who was a Squire for 13 years before his Knight finally quit the game and they finally allowed him his Knighthood now that his sponsor was no longer a factor in their lives. Also, you can get fucked over good if you're squiring for a Knight who loses his belt (yes, you can be stripped of a Knighthood) or ditches the game before you're ready, because then you have to work your ass off and find a Knight without a Squire to take up your sponsorship, or else get busted down to being a Page because you accepted that your new Knight already has a Squire and they have to evacuate that spot before you can claim it. Knighthood is a bitch and a half to acquire in Amtgard, and anyone that made their Knighthood in less than 8 years pretty much automatically has "dick-sucking" as the reason why they got there so quickly.

There are two natures of shields: Active and static. A very rough generalization is that suspended shields tend to be static walls that you interpose between incoming attacks and you, and most centergrip shields are actively countering (this is not gospel, just a generality)

That said, active defense is a natural reaction for your typical unschooled combatant, as most WMA/HEMA/SCA etc folks will point out. Bucklers have much less mass to interfere with this, on top of being more convenient for every day usage.

For me the RP element should just be you acting out a character. You know, "role playing." If I'm a skilled swordsman and want to role play a warrior I shouldn't have to put up with some greasy fuck saying "you're not high enough a level to parry my attacks! I'm reporting you to the king!"

I'm not saying that I am skilled at any kind of medieval combat, mind you, but I'd like to have the chance to learn those techniques or develop those skills without having to get permission from neckbeards by stroking their ego.

SimTerra has no classes--you can use any weapon, armor, or shield you pick up, and "leveling up" just gets you one more skill point to buy neat little tricks (or spells, if you're a caster).

how the fuck do you think this an an insult baseball is a pretty tough fucking sport, tougher than your LARP shit. Don't think so? Then try to hit a fastball coming right down the center plate at 90mph or orchestrate an on-the-fly triple play when the batter hits the ball off-course right to 3rd base.
>hurr you don't have to pay attention to numbers and be wary of calculations going on behind the scenes or keep in term the long-term effects of things
Any sperglord can memorize a bunch of pointless shit. Baseball, especially good baseball, requires lots of work.
