Can we start a resin thread? Post pics of some of your stuff, link to your shops, and ask questions! I love resin pieces and I just made my own for the first time (pic). I'm really happy with how they turned out, there aren't any bubbles (some glitter from my table is on the outside of some of the pieces in the pic bc I didn't notice until I had uploaded it ;-;) and I think they look pretty cute. The only problem is that the back of three of the pieces are sticky. I'm not sure if it's because I used acrylic to color or if I didn't mix the resin well enough. The backs of two other ones (one not in pic) are fine though, and I used acrylic. I'm not gonna worry about it since they'll be pins for myself.

This is my favorite one. The edges are a bit rough, but I think it's because the mold was a cheap, shallow one from Hobby Lobby.
What are your favorite places to order molds from? I want some simple ones like biscuits, planets, hearts, etc. I've found a lot on Storenvy and Etsy but I was wondering if there were any independent stores that sell some.
Also, is this resin good? Or is there anywhere else I can buy large quantities of it?

Don't use acrylics anymore. You don't want any water in the resin and acrylics are water based.
Use resin dyes or oil paints if you still have to be cheap.

Can we talk about polymer clay charms too please?

I don't know much about resin, but would be open it using it but I like to make my own stuff. I guess I could start trying to go into the direction of making molds with polymer clay and then using those to cast resin.. I'm not sure how to do sculpt a mold though.

Mold making is super easy! You just need a two-part putty. Ideally you want something soft like silicon, or else you'll likely have to break the mold open to get your resin piece out.
I tried out a silicon putty, and the mold 'hardened' in only a few minutes, with a consistency similar to those Livestrong bracelets (same stuff). It's safe to use, too, and probably a little too fun for its own good.

>> No.8490459

>>8490330
It's not so much an issue of space as much as it is safety/comfort. You really don't wanna be breathing those fumes in for any long period of time, especially in a closed up dorm. Everyone will be able to smell it, too. Not pleasant.

>> No.8490470

For making moulds I use Formaform. It's made of synthetic rubber and you work with it as you would with wax (melt on the stovetop and shape), so each mould is reusable. It's quite a bit cheaper than silicone (especially the ones for edibles), the only drawback is that it can get messy and make your place smell like a fisherman's shack.

>>8490470
How hot does it need to be? I've used cheap thermoplastics (not for molds) that need to be stovetop heated but I found the melting point to be just high enough that it was nearly useless for hand-molding.
Mainly I'm more concerned with accidentally melting or ruining whatever you're making the mold from.

Seconding this. Does polymer clay molds work with resin too? I really want to get into polymer clay and resin to sell some pieces but idk if the molds could work with both of them. I remember someone on facebook asking a polymer clay store if their molds could also work with resin and they said no because the molds were too soft or something like that. So, my question is if I need to buy different molds for each or not?

>> No.8490830

I've been using Oyumaru for almost all my molds for as long as I can remember. Not exactly professional, but really easy and useful. I'd reccomend trying it if you need a lot a lot of molds, I made 12 jelly molds to make a bracelet and earrings for Jewelry Jelly recently.
I've looked up a million articles on this, but is ice resin really worth it? I use the Amazing Whatever and it inevitable yellows. I usually put color in it so it's less noticable, but even resin stuff that I buy from other people yellows at least a little bit.

It's not intended for hand-moulding, you use the sealant and primer included on an object over which you then pour the molten rubber in as many layers as you like. Like I said, it can be messy work but it's perfectly reusable and the wax sealant/primer can be wiped off of the original with a dry cloth.

Wow, thank you OP! Well, this is my stuff. I've been doing resin for a year and I can't make my resin look pretty and clear for some reason, It got a bunch of micro bubbles that doesn't pop out even using a heat gun, kitchen lighter or using a damn straw. To color it I use food coloring for candy(Wilton) and before I invest on white resin dye I used white pigment for food coloring(It was cheaper, but I couldn't get rid of little white dots) I like to use tiny molds I'm kinda stingy so I rarely do bigger pieces.

Mod Podge has a newish product called collage clay, but it's clearly marketed for sugary frosting decoden crafting. I haven't tried it myself, but if you're ever in a pinch or don't want to make it yourself, it should work fine. Maybe not for heavy duty things like actual phone cases (according to reviews), but still. We have it at the Michaels I work at.

That being said, I like the brand but it's definitely pricier for the name. I imagine this is similar to their glue-gun mold sticks, which have the same consistency of actual glue gun sticks but are more expensive. It's just more targeted marketing for the same product.

I cut a hole in the corner of a bag, put in a PLASTIC (you will never be able to clean a metal one, it peels right off plastic) icing tip, tape that shit tight on, and use a caulking gun to pump out the silicone bathtub caulk into the plastic bag. Pipe per usual.

I like Mod Podge's deco cream. The pink is a really nice pink and the white looks more like real frosting than piped silicone. But It's expensive ($9.99 for a tube vs. $2.99 for a larger tube of silicone) and I'm not convinced it's going to hold up as long. I've only used it on deco boxes and jewelry, it might not hold up on a phone case which is being touched constantly and thrown around.

Posted this in the AA thread awhile ago but here are some pieces I've made. My goal is too open up a -kawaii- type store like CCK or Kawaiigoods or something, but after my cons this year I have to replenish my stocks.

I'm not a fan of using stickers myself in pieces since I intend to sell and I'm also an artist, so it feels weird to essentially re-sell someone else's art?? But I've seen really cute ones done with stickers that I like.

I wash my silicone molds with dish soap and water, just kind of wash the glitter and such out with my hands. You wouldnt want to use abrasive washers like a steel wool or rough brush, it would tear up the silicone. I've also heard that you want to keep you molds separate from clay and resin use? I'm not sure the reason but maybe if you used clay its residue would stay in there or something and mess up your resin curing process, idk.

Some troubleshooting for you
>not enough glitter
I feel you, its restricting not having cute glitter. I recommend aliexpress if your patient with shipping taking 20 - 40 days to arrive. Look in the nail sections, they have tons of cute glitters and embedments for inexpensive. Michaels also has the nice Martha Stewert glitters and stuff, would only recommend if you use the %40 coupon though.

>Airbubbles
I use a lighter to pop air bubbles in my piece, but I know others will also use a heat gun or a straw and their own breath. I use my lighter like crazy and if I see stubborn bubbles I'll move them to the surface with the toothpick and pop them with the lighter again.

>Sticky resin
A way to save sticky resin pieces is to cover them with a glaze. I use my standard sculpey glaze which is Varathane floor glaze. Comes in matte and shiny, I went for the shiniest option. Also sticky resin is likely caused by not enough stirring or improper cure temperatures. Resin loves heat, so make sure you aren't letting your resin cure in a cool place. Mix the resin thoroughly and I usually put both of my resin bottles (resin and hardener) in a bowl of warm water to warm up the liquid first before measuring. This applies only if you are using epoxy though (envirotex lite, easycast, etc)

OK so epoxy resin is a 2 part resin consisting of the hardener plus the resin itself. Most brands use a 1:1 ration to mix (but I have heard of others such as 2:1). The main thing is that it is somewhat safer than polyester resin to use. You do not need much special equipment to use it besides avoiding it touching your skin. You can use gloves if you're clumsy with your hands.

Polyester resin is a fiberglass resin that cures much harder than epoxy resin, but it is much more smelly and unhealthy to be around. It is advised you wear a respirator while working with this resin. It is a resin that uses a catalyst instead of a hardener(?) It comes with a small drop bottle of catalyst that you only use a measurement of drops into your resin. You have to play around with how much you use since it depends on weather/humidity. You would need more catalyst in cold or humid weather. While you would want to reduce this number in more ideal conditions since the resin would harden in your mixing container before you even got a chance to pour it.

I realized you meant polyurethane but I misread as polyester. I haven't done as much research into this type of resin but this page sums it up fairly well https://www.artmolds.com/polyurethane I'd say it sounds fairly similar to epoxy except it might harden up more but is more expensive to obtain.

>> No.8503287

>>8503283

I thought I might as well share the info since I had already written about polyester, sorry haha. Also I forgot to mention that the depth of cast you intend to make also matters. Epoxy doesnt do well for larger casts thus you would want to try polyester or a different kind. Theoritically you could use epoxy for a deep cast but you would have to slowly build it up by pouring in a little, letting it cure, and then repeating those steps which would take a damn long time.

So in summary -
If you intend to use your resin for jewelry or other small items I would recommend epoxy.
If you are planning on making large props or casts, I'd look into polyester or do more research on polyurethane.

Dorm resin experience. Do NOT use polyester resin. It will stink up your entire floor and your RA will come knocking no matter how many windows you open. Your best bet is to do with epoxy resin that doesn't smell as much and leave it in a trusted stairwell. Dorm dwellers can be assholes, especially undergrads, so just be careful of that. I used to cure stuff in the stairwells in my grad dorm and no one bothered it.

I think it's the type of resin? Resin is sold here without any type of indications of how to use or what components are made of. I think the one I use is kind of industrial, it cures very clear but with a bunch of micro bubbles. I can pop the ones in the surface but not the ones inside. I've tried with other brands of resin that cures clear and cures faster too. But for some reason it tends to get cloudy if there is no strong light nearby(such as sunlight)

>>8501313
You mean Bortcat? Er...The gray cat? It's not made with a mold but what I do is:
>I print my drawings on regular couche paper. I usually draw them with a thick dark border, because resin tends to stain this kind of paper but just the edges where the paper is cut.
>I cut some polymer clay with the sillouette of my image with 3mm aprox the border(For the cat I used actually cold porcelain, but I hate it because it shrinks and gets deformed when it dries, polymer clay works better)
>I bake the piece, paint a white coat of acrylic paint and glue my picture(If the border is black, after gluing I paint the border with black)
>After all is dry, I dome it with resin(I add some fine glitter, a bit of it)
>When one side is cured, I dome the back as well.

A better-executed example is <this picture. I really liked the back, washi tape doesn't stain with resin. But being honest it's a hassle to make. I just saved some money to print acrylic charms. I don't discard the idea for making something more personal tho, they are cute.

Some polymer colors can be softer than others. Sculpey III's white is very soft and picks up major thumbprints. So maybe it could pick up more details in a mold?

Aww, thank you for that detailed post!

Personally with me I do own enough glitter, I just end up not putting enough in the mold haha. I've seen some of the glitter you mentioned and it's pretty fabulous although I've actually been lucky enough to get nice colours from the dollar store. I'm totally going to check aliexpress now though. I own a heat gun as well, its only problem is that it blows too hard so I have to be careful not to blow the resin out of the mold.

I think my problem is probably how impatient I am. I do put resin in warm water but I probably don't stir it enough because I want to get to the good part where I pour my casts. I use Easycast for everything.

I'll have to check out the glaze too. I've tried a bunch of different glazes, varnishes and whatnot and nothing was really helping.

Also starting to attempt to make my own molds. the moon on the bottom was my first attempt as well as the larger seashell, but amazing mold putty is not the way to go with that piece. I'm going to need to make my own silicone mold material.

So I want to make a resin rod, but I want it to have sparkles in it (it will be part of a project). I'm going to make it using a 3d mold. My problem is: how will I keep the glitter from sinking to the bottom? Should I do it in small layers?

I'm totally new to resin and I have some questions, I hope you talented people can help me.

How do I make holes into my resin charms to attach them to whatever? How do I attach a screw eye hook? Is that the best option? I've seen people using those tiny drill for modelmaking but also heard it's not the best idea (with no better option provided).

>>8512634
How can I make those? Put a little piece of wood into a perfectly fitting (selfmade?) mold and then pour the resin in?

>>8513885
Do you just paint the letters, numbers etc. after you casted the resin and took it out of the mold? How do you seal it?

>> No.8514763

> making holes & attaching eye screws

I primarily use eye screws. The resin honestly isn't so hard that you can't just screw it in yourself or use jewelry pliers to get it nice and tight. For extra precaution use E-6000 or KrazyGlue on the eye screw (screw it in then in screw put glue and screw back in.) I plan on buying a small drill to but holes into seashells so when I get it I can test on resin but I'm sure there really is no issue with that so long as youre not screwing it too close to the edge.

> wood pieces in resin
Use a small saw or exacto to cut the pieces to fit.

> Painting in small details
Use a toothpick or small brush to drop in paint messily over the details. Cover it well. Wait for the paint to dry a little then use a damp q-tip to gently rub over and around the crevices. If you accidentally wipe off some of the paint where you don't want to wipe it off just reapply. Once everything is dry and complete use resin safe glaze on top.

Work on making them more even. The painting and sculpting are both wonky and it looks really obvious up close, maybe not so much from afar. Your stuff has potential but it's still got a long way to go before it's good. On the plus side, you understand the importance of sanding and finishing your pieces, and the stuff you make is cute, it just needs better execution, and that'll only come with practice. Try using a non drying clay to work on your sculpting so you don't spend too much cash on materials.

I don't have any issues with lightly tinting with acrylic to create a translucent tint. But anything opaque takes longer to cure. I'll usually tint it lightly and then use pearl-x powders to get it a little more opaque in color.

I tried using oils the other day after reading this thread. Mixed a nice pastel pink color. Spent forever mixing it before and in the resin making sure it was thoroughly mixed. After it cured, I got ivory with red flecks, like the colors had entirely separated during the curing process. I tested it out again tonight and it happens after it's mostly solidified and no longer tacky. So fucking weird. I was just using a cheaper set, obviously because I'm experimenting. I'm wondering if it's due the pigmentation.

Of course I'm biased towards the pastel pink/purple one. But I even like the hot pink colors you have going on as well as some of the teal-y blues.

I'm not sure what the mold is but I'm not really feeling the hearts with the indented centers? Its hard to tell from this photo but I think they look really thick? I'd definitely make them half a centimeter to 3/4 a centimeter in thickness if you are planning on making them into jewelry. The sticker placements are a bit off and I think you'd be best finding stickers that would actually fit inside the centers. I've never actually experimented with stickers myself but I think you could try adding the sticker after when the resins cured and then doming the top. I think you might have tried that with the Miku one? But when doming with something that has a cameo type hole (not really sure what to call it tbh), I think you should only dome inside that area, not past it.

I didn't realize until now that was a oujia planchette. I thought it was supposed to be a heart shaped donut haha. Both your sculpting and painting need some work, but I think that top thing is really cute for some reason. Its little legs are so adorable !

It'd recommend watching youtube tutorials, it helped me a lot to get better at sculpting. It also let me know what tools are important and I'd recommend to you if you dont already have them
-Exacto knife
-Sculpy super slicer (the long straight razor in here is amazing)
-Clay ball blending tools (has a metal ball on the end and can help with blending as well as sculpting, cake stores also sell something exactly the same for fondant but I find they only come in larger sizes.)

I dont usually paint my sculpy clay but I would think having a thin and good paint would be important. Your paint at least isn't too globbed on, but your edges are messy sometimes. Although the face of the top thing (squid?) is pretty crisp looking, I would recommend using the ball tool/dotting tool with paint on it to get the same size of eyes so they are even in shape.

A bit of crit for the planchette is the hole in the middle needs to be lower down towards the thinner side of it. I think it could also help if you added more occult things on it to help convey what it is supposed to be. Maybe try painting an all seeing eye or writing OUJIA in fine liner.

One last tip, the absolute best glaze you can get for your clay is Varathane floor glaze. It comes in shiny and matte, and is available at home depot and places like that. Its very inexpensive for how much you get, and is essentially the same thing as the sculpy branded glaze. Do NOT use clear nail polish or anything else harsh. They actually react badly with the clay and cause it to become gooey over time, this can take months though but it has happened to me.

Yes oh my gosh do it, they are a savoir. They have many practical uses.

I understand what you mean about tutorials, some of them can be like that. But some are very good for teaching a specific technique. Such as tutorials that cover texturing are very nice and textures can apply to many different objects. Learning texture is extremely good for miniature foods such as cakes, breads, waffles, etc etc. Or learning shading with pastels, but that wont help you if you intend to stick with painting.

I'd suggest maybe then looking for painting tutorials? I just did a quick search and found this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2efAp-Ljy8 I didn't listen since I can't use my speakers right now, but I saw she did the dotting for the eyes. Something like this type of video could be useful.

Do I just use the basic shrinky dink paper that they sell in amazon like this:

I use the clear Polyurethane resin so that's the only experience I've had with it. From what I know:

It has a water clear finish
It gets bubbles, you can degass it, some times are not needed to be degassed, but be careful with bubbles.

It cures faster than epoxy.

Certain types of silicone will make the piece sticky for a few days. I find leaving sticky pieces in the sun or by themselves will help the stickiness go away after awhile.

It's more tricky to use than epoxy due to the bubbles.

The part A can crystallize with the air so, you may find your lid to harden to the bottle. There are dry blankets you can use to stop this. Or prevent it for awhile.

^^ But it is def faster than epoxy, so if you don't want to wait for epoxy, this is better in some ways.

hey, I was wondering if any of you know what's up with discolored hardener? I just picked this up yesterday and pulled it out of the box and it was like this. I mixed some in the hopes that it was just the amount in the bottle that made it look amber but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I have a question to all you resin crafters.
How do you seal paper stickers or images that you've printed out yourself before resin?

I've seen some people do it with modge podge, and others use sticky tape. I'm thinking of buying a lamination machine and use that to seal before making charms any advice on that?

>> No.8537874

>>8534660
The one on the left has some issues with the paint, but other than that they look pretty cute! One thing I'd say though is to make their mouths a little less curly (if that makes any sense), it might be just me but I find that it tends to make them look a bit off somehow. Aside from that, it's nice, the resin looks clear, and from what I can see the doming looks good.

>> No.8537877

>>8537710
I've never tried using laminated pieces but it might work. One thing I'd be wary of it the fact that the layers could peel apart and allow the resin in. Maybe seal the paper with mod podge before laminating, just in case.

Thank you so much! (I made the birds)

>> No.8539040

>>8539010
Would you mind describing the process? I looked it up but was wondering if your process was any different, I can't tell if the fine lines on the birds are paint or molding

>> No.8539093

>>8538472
I'm glad you got it sorted, anon! It sucks when these things happen.

>> No.8539136

>>8539040
The fine lines were carved into the master. I actually used paper clay for this one because it's much easier to carve. The difference is that you have to seal the paper clay before pouring the silicone over it.

The first thing I do is draw a picture of what I want it to look like. In this case I needed to come up with a solution for the bird's feet, as they would be too fragile and fiddly on their own. Putting them and the beak on layer beneath the main body of the bird took care of that. Also, having two layers allows me to layer different colors which is nice. Once I have a good drawing of the shapes I want to use, I copy them and cut them out.

Next I make them out of clay. With polymer clay I simply roll a flat piece, lay my paper shapes on top, then cut around the edges. Paper clay is a little different, so in this case I formed the rough shapes that closely resembled what I was going for with a little extra all around. Once it dried I sanded it into the exact shapes using my paper as a guide. With polymer clay I would bake and sand.

Next I cast the mold. I put both layers side by side in the mold so I wouldn't have to worry about keeping them together. I can go into the mold making process if anyone wants me to.

Once the mold has cured I cast my resin pieces. Once the pieces have cured I paint the fine lines, and when the paint is dry I stick the two layers together with a little bit of clear resin and glue in the rhinestone with a tiny drop of resin. The ones I posted are domed, but I recently decided I like the way they look just glazed.

I hope this is helpful! Maybe I should try to make a tutorial, I've never done that before but maybe I could give it a shot when I have time.

>> No.8539143

>>8533393
>>8531655
Oh, and with these, rather than casting each layer separately as described above, I instead made a mold of the whole finished shape. When I cast the pieces I do it in layers. Like with the planets i do the stars and ring first, then the heart, then the background, letting each layer partially cure in between.

>> No.8539146

>>8539136
What materials/brands do you use when making molds? I've seen people make silicone molds using legos to contain it, since it can be made into different sizes. The only molds I have made are rubber latex molds for plaster (in college) and more recently, amazing mold putty. I've found the mold putty doesn't work very well with flat objects though and it dries waaay too fast imo so I feel rushed when using it.

>> No.8539264

I use oomoo. It's liquid, and a little more involved than putty, and the cure time is longer but it's not that difficult to use and it does a fantastic job.
