Isn't kigurumi the perfection of cosplay?
I mean, cosplayers put so much value upon looking as close to their character as possible.
How could you EVER look closer to your character, but with a mask?

Is it though?
Maybe it's me but i don't think it's creepy at all. To me it's an artform. Cosplay as it was always meant to be.

I'm personally apathetic. A lot of people screech it's uncanny valley, though.

By that logic, halloween masks are actually scary too.

>> No.8475613

>>8475611
Yes, actually. Hence why a lot of them tend to be creepier.

>> No.8475652

If you can't emote or "animate" your face I don't think it will ever really be perfection. For the most part I havent seen a lot that have a good enough static expression that works. So for me they stay in the realm of mascot suits.

I think cosplay is more about translating 2d characters into 3d people as good as possible.

That's probably the reason why there is so much fat or even chubby shaming in the cosplay scene.
They tend to be really nice people, unless you weigh more than your average sofa pillow.

I'm not fat, I'm just trying to understand, why you won't allow even the thinnest of the people who would be considered chubby to do what they like. Are you that filled up with hate?

>> No.8476492

>>8476461
It's not about ruining fatty's fun and hobby, but more about discussing how accurate the cosplay is and how well it translates from 2d to 3d.

Most cosplayable characters are thin or toned, so someone who's bigger wouldn't be accurate, or look as good. Even then, CGL also shits on thin attractive people if the cosplay is just for attention or is crappily made.

Fat people can cosplay whatever they want, they just won't be accurate unless it's a character specified to be fat.

I think that the anime ones are a little more uncanny valley because a lot of them get really close to human facial features in some aspects, or have to "humanize" anime features, but still try to keep the 2D aspects to it. Not to say I don't appreciate the hard work that goes into it, but I think that's why they always come off as really creepy.

On the other hand, I absolutely adore this one. I think the totally unrealistic face makes it harder to look unsettling, plus I'm just a sucker for jfashion.

>> No.8476949

i really want to try it to cosplay once but they are really expnesive. Or at least just one ask if I can wear the mask for a minute to feel how it i.

Ok, I'll bite.

The reason animegao/kigurumi is unappealing to a lot of people is because the anime heads are the only part of the cosplay that look accurate. The hair is not perfect and in place (which looks weird when the face is perfect, vs being more acceptable with a human face), the body's proportions are all wrong because it's basically impossible for a human's body (especially a dude's, because let's face it these are usually men) to match up with the anime waifu face.

Also when you translate a 2D face into 3D without making it realistic, you get stuff like: awkward point noses, weird lipless mouths, frozen, and unnatural expressions that don't actually reflect the character's in-universe expressiveness. More than just being an illustration, you cosplay a "character" - a character that smiles, sticks out her tongue, frowns, gets mad, blushes, looks sad, etc. When you cosplay without a mask you can emulate all of those for some fun photos and fun interactions with other fans. With animegao you're stuck with the same frozen face and awkward proportions.

tl;dr animegao is ok for mascot stuff and live shows but doesn't work well as "ultimate cosplay" because if "looking close to a single still image of the character" is most important then we might as well just carry around cardboard standees.

>> No.8478473

>>8477348
I dunno man, the proportions in op's image look just fine

>> No.8478474

Are there ever girls behind those masks?

>> No.8478483

I honestly think they're cute and sexy and I wish they were more accepted in the cosplay world.

It's like saying furries are creepy or have creepy people behind the fursuit/mask, yeah, some are, but there's some creeps in every hobby. I hope one day these will be more acceptable for people to wear :/ Plus it hides face, which is pretty sufficent with a lot of people wanting to enjoy cosplay but hiding their identity.

As someone who knows someone in the kigurumi community, it goes by kigurumi, though I've seen animegao used by people who aren't a part of it.

Kigurumis tend to freak me out but when it's done right, like pic related, it can look amazing. It's Serena from Pokemon XY.

I'm a "regular" cosplaying girl and I'd love to try it. I used to be really creeped out by it until I was talking to a guy friend who told me he wanted to do it and he was super nice and not creepy irl at all. The really well done ones are very artistic and cool.

I know my friends still get creeped out but I try to say that we're all nerds and what does it matter.

One thing I find awkward is I wanted to get a picture with someone dressed in kigurumi but I didn't know how to approach them. I still feel more awkward around it. I guess because it's more rare to see.
