Russia and then maybe some of the Australian ones

>>Those of you living in a relatively wealthy country/region, are people in your comm well-dressed for having more money to spend?
No, they are just brand itas who enjoy jumping on the trend bandwagon before it even pulls into station. Hand made is still positively seen but more regarding accessories and hats vs dresses and blouses. The girls are nice but are prone to gossip if you wear the same dress over and over.

>>Those of you living in a relatively poor country/region, are people in your comm poorly dressed for having less money?
When I lived in a poorer area of the country I found the girls to be better dressed because they actually put more time and thought into what they brought 'Can these socks go with anything else, Does this bag match 3 or more items in my wardrobe, Do I need a summertime OP or do I wear lolita more in the cooler months'.
Many of them paid their own way and wearing a dress in several different ways was held in high esteem. The group motto seemed to be 'Quality over quantity'

My area is really expensive to live so its hard to say if it truely a weathy place to live when a lot of people are on governemnt help and there are really bad areas that you dont want to walk if you are a scrawny Caucasian but then there are celebrities who have vacation homes here/vacation here.

BUT my area has pretty close ties with japan, its one of the faster places to receive shipments from and flights to Japan is among the cheaper countries to fly to. At least two or three lolitas go to japan a year but not always just for shopping. We only have one real ita who attends meets occasionally but its a fetishist and has been posted on the secrets from time to time from other comms since he travels and meets up with others. Since we dont have much of an online presence and hopefully it seems to be staying this way a lot of the time there will be a plus sized lolita without a blouse, the more then occasional unstyled hair/no makeup and a handful of nitpicks. One girl is practically flawless every single time though.

I wish my comm would do it too. I don't believe that people who are really ugly, fat, poor, have no fashion sense or whatever aren't allowed to wear lolita because it's just clothes and people can do what they want, but I do wish that we could take pictures or even have meets without them. At least until they improve. It sucks when you've spent almost a thousand dollars on a coord and then spent hours styling your hair and doing your makeup only to have to stand next to a girl with unstyled thinning hair and a dress made out of a Sailor Moon pillow cover in group photos.

Of course private meets with just friends are a thing, but I'd like being able to have private meets with just the girls who are really well dressed. If I tried anything like that in my comm I'd be lambasted for elitism because that's apparently the worst thing in the world.

Sometimes when it's stupidly hot or I'm just lazy, I'll go in a casual coord and step aside when it's time for a group photo. People will yell at me to get in the photo, even when I say I don't want to be in it. One time the whole group actually shifted to where I was standing to try and force me to be in it. So it's not always because the casual people think so highly of themselves, sometimes the comm peer pressures them to join.

I live in an affluent area that has a huge income gap, so people are either barely scraping by or dropping $3,000+ on brand every month. It's caused a pretty big division in the comm with a group of Bodyline/replica-chans that dress terribly and a really lavish group who attends monthly $50+ tea parties and makes coordinates that also include European luxury products. I would say that there is a real noticeable difference in quality of coords between the two groups. Maybe money doesn't always equate to good coords, but I've definitely noticed that the "rich" group does a better job overall because they can usually afford better quality "extras" like blouses, jewelry, and other accessories whereas most of the girls in the "poor" group just wear Forever21 blouse + cheap skirt with deflated Leg Avenue petticoat and no accessories.

I can speak for Mexico - people here are really fucking cheap and can't seem to grasp the concept of price vs. quality.

I work for a shop that imports asian clothing (among them lolita, on ocassion) and we get all kinds of stupid comments like "This dress doesn't seem worth $100", "What can I buy with $20?", "Bodyline is cheaper", "My seamstress says she can do the same dress for half the price" and so on.

The biggest lolita sites also have a 'no bully' attitude, so everyone stays terrible forever.

Also the southeast/midwest could do better if the comm leaders weren't salty cunts and tried to help improve others within their comms.
I'm from NYC comm and visiting but I couldn't believe the air of attitude and pretentiousness I vibed from a lot of good southern lolitas. Some were very nice, but a lot were bitchy and clearly had intentions to be passive-aggressive to the faces of those who they didn't think were well dressed just so they could snark about how much better they were later. Or they had petty style preferences even if the people in question were dressed well for their substyle.

It's true that the best communities uphold standards but I doubt Russian comms aren't straightforward about their expectations from members. The American attitudes are "I WANNA BE THE BEST SO NOBODY ELSE CAN BE BETTER THAN ME." It's a real fucking problem.

The hot topic here nowadays is gentrification and rent going through the roof. It's difficult to afford living in Portland proper.
Granted, I'm a fairly recent transplant myself and really love it here.

The comm is nice, but pretty visibly split into two groups: one is well-dressed, primarily wears brand, and generally better off. The other mostly wears Bodyline and offbrand and has a lot of poor/unemployed people. We're not separate comms, but even at meets that have a varied attendence there tends to be a natural segregation.
I don't mind it, but it might bother some.

>Those of you living in a relatively poor country/region, are people in your comm poorly dressed for having less money?

I'm from the Midwest. There's a sizable gap when it comes to lolitas in my general area. You're either a student or you're working. So you have money or you don't. Most of the people who have money to spend progress fairly quickly up the ranks. The ones who don't or aren't primarily focused on lolita as their hobby/fashion choice tend to stagnate. So we have great dressers and people who are perpetually in the beginner phase. Since a large portion of lolita revolves around expanding your wardrobe options and figuring out what looks good on you, it's easy to get stuck in a rut if you don't have the expendable income to buy or sell (and sit on it until it sells). Ultimately it all comes down to money and experience. Experience won't happen without money, and money can't buy experience.

The cities that are more well off in my area tend to have a larger clustering of lolitas who own more and are able to put together nicer coordinates. Providing they aren't students living off mac and cheese and ramen.

I'd disagree that SF is the best dressed comm on the west coast, though. Because it's pretty laid back, we have people that never improve, and it's really frustrating to see meet after meet they buy brand new dresses but refuse to do their hair or makeup. And with the influx of newbies, I'd say maybe half the comm is well-dressed.

It's horrifying. I went to one meetup, my very first one, before moving to a different state. It was my first ever coord and I was the best dressed one there. Most of them were in their 40's and 50's, half of them were old men in "steampunk" aka vests and goggles. The women were about as stereotypically ita as one can possibly be, wearing tshirts with skirts, black and white lacemonsters, brown modcloth "steampunk" dresses, etc. Two of them brought all their kids, dressed in disgusting handmade "lolita", they looked bored and miserable the whole time. It was such an awkward experience, they kept being weirdly condescending and talking down to me, even though I was the only one wearing an actual lolita dress. I got out as quickly as I could and never talked to any of them again. Luckily the comm in my new state is a lot better, even though it's not perfect, and I've made some really good lolita friends, but that one experience nearly turned me off lolita entirely.

Brisbane lolita here. Our comm has many members but really only a small group of active lolita's maybe 20-30 or so. Meets are fairly regular and everyone is lovely and accepting. It's easy to make friends.

Dressing wise I feel that many probably have fairly impressive wardrobes and the potential for great coords, but our laid back attitude doesn't really lend itself to pulling out the stops for meets. Coords are often more toned down as well because meets are regularly held outdoors or involve a bit of walking. Additionally there isn't really a competitive nature to the comm.

So in summary: Lovely people, regular meets, coords generally toned down.

I think it all depends on how much Mexicans can actually afford. Mexico is not that rich. There is inequality and the earnings are proportionally low, not enough to buy much dresses. Services are still expensive, so you spend most of your money in food, medical doctors, studies, and whatever. I know you can save money, but is not that easy to get that much burando. I believe that to look good you really need to spend money and effort, I don't believe much in the magical-Lolita made of good efforts and desires alone. It would take some years until you can actually have a coord, if you were in a middle-economical position.

I see that now that I live in a rich country, where everything is highly priced, high taxes, equality and good government, but the earnings are also high and proportional to the burando standards (you can find normie clothing for burando prices at the store). I can afford a brand new dress every month if I really wanted. That would be never possible if I was in Mexico even with the same job in the same subject.

So... I guess people just throw everything they can at themselves and hope to enjoy it anyway, instead of doing nothing and never dressing. I don't know the comm, though, but I think this might happen to most people with low income in the world.

The problem with this thinking is that unless clear lines are drawn, where's the cutoff? One Bodyline Ita may ruin it but a well dressed girl with a Bodyline main piece may shine. I think the whole 'lolifying' thing needs to die bit I admit, some vintage blouses and jewelry top Burando in style and quality. So then people argue over it and get accused of elitism.

The best way I've found? Make the events a little more expensive and hold them at a nicer place. Then the less well-dressed either can't or won't spend for it or will feel they are too under-dressed to attend. By no means do I think regular comms should do this, but a private side-group? Absolutely.

Alternately, pick and choose people in an invitation only meet and just grit your teeth for the criticism. The meet may or may not be worth it but if it isn't, just don't hold another. If it is then *ding* success. One final way would be to take several group shots at a general meet with just a few people in each so you can pose with who you like.

>> No.8471073

I think it just depends on the area you live in. If it's a low-income area, the majority of girls in your comm are obviously going to be low-income. Also, in areas with a big rich/poor divide, I think poor girls are more likely to be attracted to lolita than rich girls, since the rich girls probably already have a bunch of designer normalfag clothes and the poor girls are the ones who want to feel like a princess desu.

From what I know the LA comm dresses pretty well, even going OTT for super casual meets, but quite a few are super hungry for e-fame. If you're visiting or new, they pretty much ignore you and do their own thing.

The SF comm is pretty well dressed for the most part. The worst part with summer is all the new itas, but they either improve or disappear (usually). Everyone is super nice and welcoming, and a pretty fun group overall. If someone is feeling left out, a lot of the lolitas will jump in and include them in conversations and such.

I haven't really checked out the Sacramento comm, but I've talked to a lot of them and they were also pretty nice. From what I remember from pictures, they dress pretty decently but nothing too amazing.

They're generally pretty nice. There's definitely a noticeable split between the ones who wear brand and the ones wearing bodyline/off brand. However quite a few have a good mix of brand/off brand in their wardrobe. I've had a good experience so far and I usually feel welcomed. I'm a part of the bl/offbrand crowd and I've noticed that they tend to be a lot more friendly and approachable. I don't know, I'm probably just biased because I haven't gotten to know many of the ones who wear brand, but that's the vibe I get. Though I've had a few interactions with the brand crowd and they have been nice as well. I'm thankful that they're very nice but sometimes I feel like we're a little too laid back. It's not like we have a ton of itas that make our comm look bad, but it doesn't seem like our dress code is reinforced enough. There have been plenty of times when someone has shown up wearing non-lolita when the event strictly stated that lolita was mandatory, and no one said anything. I'm from DC and while I'd like to protest.... it's not great. There are a few really well dressed people, a some who are good, and a lot of itas. Only one of our mods is consistently well dressed. Everyone is very nice though, it's a great comm in that respect.

Wow that sucks, I was hoping the LA comm would be better than that. Does anyone know how the San Diego comm is?, I'm a newbie lolita moving to SD soon and would love to attend a meet someday

I visited LA last summer and didn't get that from the comm at all. I met a few members independently and they were all really sweet, excited to meet a lolita from far away, inviting me to come to events they had planned. I really wanted to move to LA and the comm definitely helped. I think wherever I go I basically have to be somewhere with a great comm now. Mine has spoiled me.

i don't really find this to be true about the 'new' thing. some girls in the comm are incredibly nice and will make the effort to talk to you if you're new, especially if you go to 2-3 meets.

NYC Lolita here with no comm. any recommendations for one that is more welcoming to loners looking for friends?

I've been wearing it for years but everytime I ask around about the comms I've been told not to bother because of internal issues they have with themselves and just old drama.
I'm looking for local friends to make to guide me from the ita side.

The LA community is welcoming to new people, it helps if you post in the Facebook group that you are coming to visit.

Sac is okay when people actually show up. It's just not very active and appears to consist of 90% lurkers. The FB group has a lot of members but it's only ever the same five or six people who come to meet-ups.

Some teenager said they wanted to have meets more often and they seemed to expect her to host them. She said she didn't have time because of work/school. Who gives a shit?

I'm a part of the brand group, and I can truly say... We're all really painfully shy and socially awkward and that's why we're not as friendly ;_; we're all already friends and most of us have been in the community for long enough to watch insane drama break out, so we're scared of making friends and then crazy shit going down.

We don't dislike you! It's not really an excuse, we're just really awkward.

Idk but maybe try joining the open nyc fb group, they sometimes post events? Like I've seen various meetup pics via victorianme (Chinese lolita) and yanii like that Harry Potter themed one and general cafe meets that looked like a decently dressed group. I'd say to go to a Tokyo Rebel or Btssb nyc event and network from there. There's a special on July 19th for the store's anniversary so maybe visit the store then and start small talk worth others in the store!

It's a way to network, of course they have a separate group but sometimes the better dressed girls attend open, bigger meets or occasions like cherry blossom viewing, where you'll run into random people! I would also say to try hosting your own meetup after you attend an event and know more people.
