Is there any way to make short hair work in lolita, or should I just give up and buy a wig?

I recently chopped all my hair off so I have a short pixie, which is great most days, but I wore a really toned-down casual coord the other day and it still felt really unbalanced. Is there a way to fix it without a wig? It's hot af right now so Lolita might be out until fall if that's the case.

I wore a casual sailor coord, with just a medium-sized hairbow.

Old school bags answer >>8460808

Plain black or white bags, primarily rectangular with embossed with the brand name were the most common in the street snaps. Sweet girls also used straw baskets and matching cloth tote bags.
Gothic varied between structured bags and soft embroidered velvet. Also the Vivienne Westwood pink/white print was incredibly popular with both groups and I personally see that bag as being iconic in Old school styling.

Even better is the Fruits book by Phaidon, it has a lot of really early lolita, which I find really inspiring, much more so than buy entire set, put on pretty rich girl. It contains the weird creepy other worldly factor of dressing up like a weirdo, which I feel is missing these days.

Okay. so I figure this would be the best thread to ask. I've tried coording this skirt a couple times. The left picture is from a meetup and the right is from this past AX. I feel like I did a better job with the left and the more I look at the right, the more I feel like I'm falling into almost ita territory. I wanted to be comfortable during the con and pulled it together last minute, but I realize that I should have really worn a wig instead of going natural hair. I asked for critiques on closet of frills but only got a suggestion for welovecolor for tights(because I have fat hips and calves) and suggestion for a wig with soft curls close to my hair color.

I really would like some better advice before I wear it out again.

Petti: A-line with small amount of puffiness. The high waist on the JSK can look a bit odd with heaps of petti coat stuffed under it.
Blouse: white or pink with a small peter pan collar
Legwear: If you're determined to do white x brown, then go with a a nice polka dot printed sheer tight in white
Shoes: Brown or pink
Accessories: Chocolate themed so AP,Swimmer, Q-pot, BTSSB, I.W (on occasion), etsy but make sure they have gold links and not silver as you gotta keep your metals matching
Bag: Brown or pink

And another area to think about-Where your wardrobe is going as you buy more pieces.

I personally recommend going down the pink/ivory/brown route as there is plenty to buy and match easily together. It also means that if you want to try out classic you'll already have the basics with blouses, bags, shoes and headwear.

Go with the blue/ivory/brown if pink doesn't work with you skintone and start looking into classic/sweet (Florals will be your friend).
I would hold off from buying blue shoes and bags unless you want to go for the super matchy AP sweet look (even then there is a good chance the blues won't match). In my experience I have found that it is difficult to find main pieces with brown/light blue. You could have trouble building your wardrobe if you're buying everything from the secondhand market.

Any other questions?

I'll start by saying that I normally don't wear sweet so take this and do whatever you like with the advice.
Found a few pics of your new item and a girl in the JSK version with purple blouse. Please excuse the bad shooping but you can get an idea how it might sit with your current idea.

I like the idea of a lavender blouse, I would add a pink ribbon to the collar if you can just to help carry the pink through as the skirt is pink-blocked at the bottom.

I would personally go for a natural coloured wig, lavender shoes and either a lavender or pink bag depending on your head wear. If you find that your head wear has more lavender go with a lav bag and if there's more pink, go with the pink bag.

You can also find cute gift-box style bags from ETC and here is a link at the bottom to some cute tights that I though might match too

Legwear:
I would have a white base and then add in the mint/lav/pink colours. Everything in the outfit is already fighting for your attention so I would leave the legs a little plain to help create balance. Sheer white tights with a bow print or dots could be a budget friendly solution.

I honest to god thought this was the black version until I searched it on lolibrary.

My advice is go with the red rather than the black. Whilst your print isn't popular the next best thing is to find popular prints in the same colors as yours. So lets take a look at I.W Union Jack, Grazia and A.P lucky key.

All navy blue with royal theme and gold/red combo. The good part is you can now see what other color schemes people have tried and what hasn't worked.

So far the complimentary colors are brown and cream. Not a big surprise.
If you want to work in black then you may need to do it with a nice black jacket with gold trimming and then use Navy/gold as the accent color (check out BPN, Putumayo, AatP, At Boz, Algonquins, Excentrique and Ozzon)

Re-stocks with AP? No chance in hell unless your in the right place at the right time with stars and moon aligned.

Your skintone sounds fine for sweet and AP pieces should work in fairly easy, the only problem maybe with the pinks not matching but that's been going on for years.

With buying secondhand keep an eye on what is popular and what isn't so you don't get ripped off. Check the catalog for a price check thread and post the item in there.

If you want to buy on the second-hand english lolita market you'll need feedback so ebay and Lacemarket is a good start. Closetchild is also buyer friendly and there are plenty of shopping services for the japanese auctions.

AP chocolate pieces come up regularly so make a college and post it in the dream dress thread so other people can keep extra eyes out for you.

Thanks for your advice gulls! I wasn't really sure what theme to go with so I ended up with a clusterfuck, I guess. Hopefully this looks better?

I have a velvet bolero to match the flocked print. I can't find a picture, but it's similar to pic related, without the clasp.

I don't really have any other options atm for the headpiece. I do own these shoes though, with a higher heel. But they don't look right to me either.

Don't use a split wig, they're absolutely awful and naff looking, go for the lavender if you have to but please make sure you cut it to flatter your face.
That dress is just all kinds of wrong as it is, the bows are almost classy looking and the print is like halloween napkins. I guess you're trying to go tacky though which I do like but I'd go for the bat clips, at least they're something different. Black tights and pastel shoes tend to look terrible together. I'm not really sure where I was going with this.

Thank you both for the advice. I definitely need to invest in a new petticoat. The one I currently own is an a-line and after a day of wearing they're just deflated.

I have been considering picking up a sheer/chiffon blouse. If I went with a nice red or black blouse, do you think the vest would work well together, or would I be better off investing in a something to minimize my bust? I'm a 42" bust, so I'm kind of busty and I think a high waist skirt ends up emphasizing it. When I wear a jsk, it's less noticeable.

For the tights/shoes. I mostly have black shoes for lolita, except the red wedges and some tarnish flats. I've been wanting new red shoes since those wedges are super worn out. I'm planning to hunt eBay since I'm about a size 10 us. I've been hoping to find more patterned tights that fit since I've got fat legs. I didn't like any of the plus sized stuff on welovecolors.

I'll keep my makeup in mind too.

Another pixie-short hair lolita here-I know that feeling, I really don't like wearing wigs, but sometimes it feels like I have to.

Other anons are right, hats are wonderful, especially vintage style ones. Half bonnets and old school rectangle headdress work well too, and depending on your head shape and how much volume you have in you hair, sometimes small clip on bows can work for casually coords.

Personally I also really like flower headbands (small profile ones, not like OTT monsters) because it gives me the option of matching colors in my coords and keeping most of my hair uncovered while also not looking top heavy/weird like I do with big headbows.

not sure what the 'needs more gold' anons are on about - gold chain in hair, gold bag, gold necklace, gold on bracelet. I get the feeling anons are being put-off by the photo not being entirely clear if anything, not helped perhaps by the anons using their mobiles.

Anyway, I actually think it's the lack of volume in the skirt ie 'needs moar poof' that's making this fall a little flat overall, in addition to the slightly limp looking hairstyle and too-small/ short horns. I actually think big, high fluffy bunches (just bellow where the horns are currently sitting) would balance everything out better.

Overall though I think it's nice, just needs some tweaking.

I bought this JSK on impulse, and it's turned out to be really tricky to coord. The "mint" parts are more of a light sage color, so nothing that's actually mint will match. Also, it has both white and ivory accents, so I'm unsure if an ivory or white blouse would be a better fit. I'm thinking of avoiding that issue altogether by coording it with pink, but I'd still need to balance out the colors of the dress somehow.
I'm also in need of headwear suggestions. I don't want to get too OTT, but I feel like just a headbow would be a bit on the casual side.

I'm not convinced by the ivory anon - the ivory looks too yellowish to me. Fom the pic at least, the jsk looks mostly off-white, with only the ribbons and pearls having a more ivory cast. For this reason I'd stick to off-white then perhaps add custom sage embellishments to say, headwear in the form of flowers or bows etc. You could also possibly make use of certain verum style tights with this.

I like the pink idea but it will need to play off a number of off-white and grey-sage shades (pic somewhat related) throughout the coord to really make it work and prevent it looking blocky. As it stands, I think the salmony pink is too color blocked for such a detailed an highly embellished jsk.

>> No.8470212

I think it could work but something a bit more chiffony would be even better imho.

Dropping some terrible ms paint style edits to hopefully give a better idea of what I was going on about earlier. The shoes are both by irregular choice.

Regarding your original blouse choice in ivory, I think it would be a shame to cover up that sweetheart type detail on it, plus the smaller bow would likely be flattened. When you choose a blouse consider how it's going to sit with the neckline of the jsk - the pink blouse also may risk being covered across the neckline by the jsk.

I don't have time to go blouse searching right now but some other anons may be able to help with suggestions. Best of luck.

I was going to go for a white and silver theme.

Also should I wear a tea length underskirt with this since the dress goes slightly below my knees? It's just an awkward length for me because I'm really short.

Yeah, that shade of brown in the leather works particularly well too, plus you can use it to tie in brown shoes if necessary. I feel short boots will give it a more foresty, fairytale look. Looking amazing! My wardrobe is centered around fairy tale themes too so I'm loving this.

I got these shoes for general jfashion, such as CPK, etc.
I was wondering if it would be possible to wear them with some subsets of Lolita or Otome and still be able to call the outfit Lolita. Otherwise, if I wear a main piece that is meant for Lolita, (Misty sky, plain white, sailor) and I coordinate ot with them, how should I call the style? just "jfashion"?

Of the three I like these two best. I really wish there was a better skirt photo too.

I feel like to really make this work you need to add a little more to the chest area. Like maybe bow under the collar or a flower clip or something, in the same pale blue color. You could take this in a country direction too, with the brown shoes, a wicker/straw bag and a cute straw hat.

Okay, I'm on mobile so I might be reading the colors wrong but if the bottom blouse and first pair of socks are more like a dusty pale rose color, that could be really beautiful. Add in a few roses somewhere on the bodice. I don't have any suggestions for bags, sadly, and I'm kind of stumped on headwear too. Maybe make something like a headband or a cannotier with the same dusty-pink roses and bring in some sage green?

Don't take this the wrong way (I think you're absolutely lovely) but I think your bustiness issue could be fixed a lot with getting a better bra. Your bust should sit much higher than the crook of your elbows.

I think a lot of lolitas don't worry about bras because they're afraid of making their bust size bigger instead of smaller, but a properly fitting bra correctly fits the twins into the area where the blouse or garment was constructed for them to fill. http://www.oprah.com/style/Bra-Fit-Tips/1 I think if you wear a better-fitting bra, the skirt will be more flattering just because any fit issues will be taken care of.

Also, I think you could add something more to the top half of the coord to balance out the poof. A more elaborate hat/headpiece like this headdress (http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1z10.3-c.w4002-10861834638.115.mgvq2F&id=41433317922)) and more volume in your hair with product and styling with a blowdryer would make it look more balanced

I would ditch the bead necklace, it's distracting and too much and not in a good way, even for ott. As lovely as the shoes are, I think you need sax/blue shoes to balance it all out or possibly white if you can't find the appropriate blue shade.

A slightly fluffy golden blonde wig (brunette would be fine too) would look amazing with this and for an extra touch, perhaps a hair slide in yellow - something that picks up a motif in the print. I also think a yellow charm on the star bag would look good too.

Remember not to wear a wig straight out the packet though, trim the bangs and loosen and fluff up the curls a bit.

Just to be a super-nitpicky perfectionist, I think the badge (with the beads removed) should be pinned slightly higher up (same point on the bodice, just higher).

In general I think it's a really cute and fun outfit anon.

It's a cool idea anon, I like where you're going with it. I wouldn't normally suggest those bird tights for an already detailed, bold skirt like this but I think you can make it work. I think you need to go for a much cleaner, less fussy blouse though if you want to use the tights, preferably with a high neck.

The necklace with the tights and skirt is too much imho (although I love the cut-out silhouette style), I think you'd be better off using another motif from the skirt instead, perhaps even just a simple cross or dagger shape.

You could add in a pop of grey with an additional hair item.

since i feel like you only got responses from people that dislike creepy-cute and i do like it, i'll try to help...

the anon pointing out your purples are all over the place is right: i don't know how they translate irl, but the left half of your pic has lavender while the right half has regular purple. if those are the true colors, that won't work. i'm guessing you already own the dress, but it looks quite clipart-y from here, so it'll be hard to pull off no matter what.

the eyes look really badly done so i'd keep only the bats as hair accessories. unlike the others i think the split wig would look better, tacky wigs with creepy-cute are alright in my book.

not a fan of the glovelettes idea, they're usually associaited with punk or gothic, and notoriously uncute. regular wrist cuffs would probably look cuter if you want something there, but honestly i would have gone with short sleeves with this coord, a long white blouse feels too classical. not too sure what you called arm bands or how they'd fit on a blouse though.

i feel like black socks would probably work better, since ther's already white at the bottom of your dress and the shoes are a light color, but honestly it's really the least of your concerns at this point. also, the lengh. did you plan knee or ankle high?

all in all, as it is now this looks very plain for a creepy-cute coord, it's definitely missing accessories and the fact both your blouse and your socks are plain ones won't help.

Just get versatile pieces you can re-use. Second hand brand is good, check out auction sites and closet child every so often. Brand cardigans are nice.
More elegant shoes (like mary jane heels) would work as well since it's a classic styled dress but yeah parties are an decent staple. Red, brown, navy, or even beige would be acceptable shoe colours. Ivory socks and tights of various designs; plain, lace topped, navy accents. A lot could work with it, it's a good first piece. Plus you can find navy berets and stuff cheaply.
Honestly you could use a lot of normal/ offbrand vintage stuff with it if you wanted. Make sure to use an a-line petticoat, have fun!

The dress really reads more as blue with pink and white accents, yellow being the third accent colour after pink, and then the purple/lavender being like a minor detail than a major accent colour. Unless your skintone goes particularly well with lavender rather than pink or yellow, I'd say white x blue, pink x blue or even yellow x blue would be better colours to work with.

If you do want to do lavender/purple, I'm going to suggest mixing it up so you don't throw the colour balance off too much. I'd do either blue, pink or white socks instead of purple/lavender (choose cute lolita designs if you want to avoid the white school socks look). Add a few non-purple pastel bracelets on top of the lavender wristcuffs. After that, the lavender bag should be okay on its own, or you could tie on a couple of pastel bracelets, maybe a pink bow onto it. That should make it a nicely colourful coord.

I thought this was pretty creative, black shoes and all. I will agree the blouse is kinda funky-looking, but I don't hate it. It's an interesting way to go.

I think the choker might be a bit redundant, though. You wouldn't be able to see it under the blouse anyway, and the blue bow would look weird on top of the red blouse. I also agree the rose ring looks cheap and should be removed. The white bag might be a bit too much white, I think a brown bag (if you can't do a bag that matches the theme) would look much better.

You'll also want to match your petti to the underskirt, and not the AP dress. AP likes to put a layer of tulle to fluff up their skirts, you're going to want to tuck that inside the underskirt so that the AP skirt can lie flat against the underskirt.

I think you might not be able to make everyone happy, there are anons who can't seem to stop bashing this dress in the lolita general thread, stands to reason they'd hate any outfit with this dress in it. You did make me dislike it a little less, though, so I'd say it's a pretty decent effort at least.

Looking for leg wear suggestions. I think I've matched my browns pretty well but would like a second opinion on if I have to many going on.
General suggestions also appreciated.

No blouse necessary, although you'll probably want an a-line petticoat with that cut.

I like the browns together, personally. It gives it an otome feel. As for tights, maybe something lacy in the same ivory tone as your blouse?

To the anon who made this, can I use this on my blog? I can give you credit for it! I just thought this was so perfect to help newbies and older lolitas alike with coording

Thats not an issue, just say it's an idea about co-ordinating from a lolita called House_of_Heretic.
