Are there any decent wigs out there to style for Rose? Every one I've seen so far has used a milkshake pink wig and it's way darker than what it is in the show. Bubblegum pink always looks off too I'm not sure what I want to do color wise.
Also, how was SU cosplay wise at Expo? I hear the photoshoot was a disaster but haven't heard too many details about it.

I think her dress is alright, looks like it fits really weird on her chest though. I don't like her wig at all I'm not sure why. It looks really clean but just..not like Rose.

It's so refreshing to see a cool pink color scheme, but this looks like an Irish dance wig. And those terrible hems...
I'm also not a fan of the high-glamour lashes >>8454842 here. In her first appearance, I was kinda struck by how starkly unadorned Rose's eyes are, and it throws me off to see her done up for a pageant.

I do laser cutting and want to offer Steven's shielf for sale but am having trouble finding a material that is both transparent and a good color. This flourescent pink is the best I can find right now. Any etching will create the lighter lines. Should I order this or keep looking?

I know where to find it smaller it's just the size that's a problem. Finding stuff that works for that size at a price where I can keep costs down for the buyers.

If transluscent is okay instead of transparent there's this which wold cost about ~$30 for each shield's plastic. Still looking but these two are my top picks atm.

One of the better Amethysts I've seen so far! I think she could do with more eye makeup (ie just darkening the area around her eyes to make them pop more, not necessarily high-glamour lashes) and facial contouring, but the gem and wig length are particularly nice. IMO wigs for Amethyst will end up being a tossup between length and volume, and people usually fall short on the volume side.

Lots of SU cosplayers and the meet up probably hadn't expected so many cosplayers, so no wondet if it was disaster. If you check Tumblr, you can see poorly done cosplays. Of course there were good ones like >>8454733 and >>8455350, but there were bad ones too.

I got the deets.
Yeah, we honestly did not expect for more than twice the confirmed RSVP to show up. When I got there, all the cosplayers were, for some reason, posing on the top part of the stairs which made it incredibly hard for photographers to take photos because they had to be situated at the bottom of the stairs. We kept trying to move people and make an in/out system, but of course, a lot of them just.. hate to listen, haha. They eventually got moved to the bottom and everyone else was on actual ground, so photo wise, it got fixed at least by the end.
It was SO crowded though and the food stands being there did not help at all.

We also had some employees come over and we almost had to relocate because we had so many people, but luckily we only had to keep a part of the stairway open, saving us the hassle of herding everyone again.

The worst part of the gathering was the singing though. Oh my god, the singing. At first it was ok because thats to be expected at an SU gathering I guess, but when they would keep breaking into song it made it so hard to get people in/out and to listen. There were also a lot of people who asked us to do individual shots of each character and that was just not happening because we had so much people and so little time.

Try to get a megaphone or something to boost your voice, prepare for a larger crowd, and have a set list ready to go. Scout out the location and figure out where photogs and cosplayers will be as well as an entrance and exit for them when they're called up. If the crowd is getting too noisy, rowdy or whatever, there's no shame in "CLAP ONCE IF YOU CAN HEAR ME". It might be slightly obnoxious but it gets the job done. Good luck to you, because it was hell for me.

Has anyone else seen any "gemsonas" at conventions? I noticed one of my friends on fb appears to be making one. Not sure if people are doing real gems, or if they're making up new gems themselves.
If people make a good profile and a good character design I would be down to see some OC.

Good idea on the mini shields I can make them with the scrap pieces. As for the cosplay shield I was hoping for 24" diameter since that's the width the sheets come in but atm the laser I work with can only go up to 20".

Down to these and I'm mostly deciding between the bottom two because the shields people tend to make are usually darker. Any input seagulls?

Of course it's not easy, but it's not like the issue is that we're seeing tons of badly done cutouts, and goodness knows the SU fandom is flooded with people attempting cosplay above their skill level. I would expect people to be hacking star-shaped holes out of their dresses.
I really don't think people are universally deciding "nope, cutout that holds its shape is above my skill level, I will use a stickon. Can definitely do all this other difficult shit perfectly though!"

Maybe for babby's first cosplay, but once you have a very basic grasp on sewing, it's pretty easy to see how hard a cutout is going to be. And a beginner/intermediate sewer is probably saying to herself "oh man I have the BEST idea, I'll just slap it on top and it'll look so much better". Which it does - it looks better than a raggedy floppy cutout, but not nearly as good as a well-made version.

I don't know what dustbunny's excuse is, unless she's just not as good a seamstress as everyone thinks.

You are really, really trying to stretch my words as far as possible. Let me make this more clear. She doesn't look like photo provided. She has a small stomach. She has large hips, broad shoulders, and bigger arms and large tits, but she isn't obese. The image provided is different. Rose is shapely, but she isn't obese. She's what you would consider curvy. Even when she wears a t-shirt she isn't poking out anywhere.

Not any other anon, but Rose's level of "curvy" doesn't exist in real life. No one has boobs that big, a waist that big, and arms that big without being flabby. If rose existed in real life her skin would be sagging from her weight.
But still, Rose cosplayers need to fit their garments and wear some kind of shaping undergarments so they don't look shlubby as fuck. They need to have a big skirt with a super full petti (or hoopskirts and a petti) to balance them out too. Fat girls with saggy dresses just look extra fat. Not fluffing up their dresses is not an option here.

Rose's proportions are very realistic for some girls. Many plus sized models don't have sagging skin, but do have larger hips, thighs, chests, and arms without the sag. On top of that they can have no rolls on their stomachs, but give the appearance of a larger stomach due to a wide ribcage.

Before you talk about how it isn't possibly and only cartoony, learn some fact about actual bodies. It may not be common, but these bodies do exist.

Good try, but no. I just find it funny that when there are only two 'good' Rose cosplayers out of so many shitty ones, the need to shit all over the good ones are high as hell. This and the one girl who was posted earlier in this thread are about the only two good ones that have come out of this fandom so far. Then its onto the Peridots and Jaspers. Besides the hemming, Dust has one of the more accurate dresses and the wig is cleaner than most, but not thick or long enough, but still clean and not jacked up with curls in random places and so much hairspray you can see the bubbles.

Prepare to have difficulties with the fingertips. I really recommend practicing on a spare pair of tights in roughly the same denier first-- I had to make two pairs my first time a few years ago, I didn't do a test run/experimental pair before going for it and my first pair came out very "eeeeh". They're not terrible, but my second pair was very very much better than the first.

Also make sure you take it in enough at the wrist-- might take a couple passes to get it to be tight enough to look like a second skin. The fingers are tricky re: tightness because you need to get it the perfect exact tightness but the wrist is more forgiving since there's more material leftover to stretch and IMO it's better to err on making it slightly tighter than perfect than to leave it baggy.

Good try, but I do watch it and I never said it was inaccurate. Lol. The photos people keep posting of Garnet is when she purposely makes her gloves larger. All I said was that I didn't think anyone could make them too big, but that one cosplayer did. She just need to bring them down 1/3 and those would look perfect for things like photoshoots of her cosplay. Otherwise the oversized gloves look ridiculous unless she plans to take only action shots where perspective with them would be an advantage. Walking around a convention with how huge those are will be very uncomfortable for not just the cosplayer, but attendees.

So I finished my Peridot arms/legs today but I'm having problems with the paint rubbing off quite quickly in some spots (the leg pieces are separate from the boots) and I was wondering if anyone has ideas for what would be best to seal it with. So far I've just used a spray. Would mod podge work?

This is the only Rose who has successfully done the layers right. Dustbunny didn't even attempt the scallops and has huge, blaring seams. In my experience, mod podge doesn't work well as a sealer and has a tendency to rub off and stick to surfaces. A clear sealer spray should do just fine. Krylon's sealer has worked pretty well for me in the past. The legs and arms look great by the way!

Three things I'd suggest! First, try taking off some of the sides. Right now each side looks about even, but Peridot has most of her volume up top. There was an anon in a previous thread who had a foam base WIP for Peridot, which was a pretty good shape imo.

Second, you need to use less blunt cutting on your fiber. Instead of cutting straight across, angle your scissors toward the hair at and extreme angle, spread the hair thin, and make several cuts. The goal should be to thin the hair toward the tip so it looks more natural.

Third, get some more heavy duty styling products for your tips like tacky glue or got2b gel if got2b freeze spray isn't cutting it. Once your hair is less blunt-cut you'll have a much easier time sticking the edges together anyway, but I think it would look better if your spikes came together to make one big edge, instead of sticking out in fluffy junks. Personal preference though. Really looking forward to v2.0 - I still love your bodysuit proportions.

Some of the edges of the costume seem a little loose or unfinished, just a little.
The wig is a little rough along the edges, but otherwise it's pretty good.
Peridot's visor covers all of her top face, you should see if you could do something about that.

I'd like to suggest that you go with more subtle contacts and adjust your colors on a few things. It's hard to tell exactly what everything looks like with the lighting there but I think your body paint should be more like the color your gem is and the gem should be a tiny bit darker. A clear visor would be better too. Try to look at the basic shapes in her design and match those/tweak them to look good with your proportions. You're actually doing a pretty good job so far though.

If you look closely, it seems like she just had regular tiny hems. I mean, you could use a facing? But most people probably wouldn't. They aren't really 'scallops' they're just circular shaped like petals and overlap eachother.

I will say though, for me and a lot of people, hemming circles is a pain in the ass.

Does kryolon spray actually create any sort of hard coat or is it the same kind of thing as other sprays? It looks like I'm going to need something a bit more on the heavy duty side so I'm going to go take a look at a local plastic store and see what they have. I'm probably going to go with something similar to bondo if they have anything like that.

The arm and leg pieces are posterboard covered in a layer of plaster gauze, bondo, spackle, and mod podge. There is also foam glued to the insides in certain spots to (hopefully) keep everything in place. For the boots I glued foam to some areas, covered in gauze and bondo, and left it at that.

Krylon actually does have a tough outer coat spray called Make It Last! I used it for my Peridot and It worked just fine. Its a clear coat spray with the intent of wear and tear so it should be durable enough. You should be able to find it at Home Depot.

And to plug my progress really fast on Young Pearl, I just finished the top and I'm pretty happy with how it came out. I want to embellish it a little to give it something extra but I haven't decided on how I want to pattern the rhinestones I have. I'll figure something out.

My concern is that my paint isn't just rubbing off, it actually scrapes off all layers of paint/sealer on the areas where the leg piece and boot come in contact. I probably could have designed that part better so it didn;t do that so much buuuuut I only have like a week left. Do you think krylon would still protect against something like that? I'm just worried that something I'm supposed to use lightly won't be strong enough.

Also, your progress is looking good! Can;t wait to see it finished :)

Did you remember to coat it in gesso before applying the paint so that it sticks better? I had that problem in the beginning too before I realized that I just forgot to give it a layer or two of Gesso. If not then is there a way you can pad between the boot and leg piece with foam to prevent rubbing?

I painted on a couple layers of mod podge before the paint and also sprayed it with primer. I can pad some parts but one of the areas where it rubs off is the top area of the foot so I can't really pad that. I'm going to see what's around for heavy duty stuff but if it doesn't look like there is any that is suitable then it sounds like krylon is my best bet. Thanks for the tips!
