Depends what you are making. Generally keep thickness even, bake thick and thin parts separate so you don't overcook thin stuff/underbake thick stuff, bake curved stuff over foil forms, be careful to smooth out fingerprints before baking, calibrate your oven with a cheap oven thermometer. for Madoka's unique petti shape, you're probably just better off making one yourself. Pettis you can buy online will be too long and not have enough layers anyway. If you can't sew, see if you can commission someone.

I think you can make it yourself. It'll be time consuming but you'll for sure get what you want. I'm concerned that many ultrapoofy lolita pettis would be too long for what you want, which looks more like a ballet tutu. You can buy tulle in pre-cut long narrow strips, it's often used in bridal decorations. That could save you some time. Any way you go, though, that kind of volume comes from many layers.

A tutu is mostly straight seams:

I'm making a FMA military uniform (manga/Brotherhood style) and I'm intending to go all out to make it look as much as I can make it like a real uniform might, and I'm kinda torn on the silver trim. I'd like to use military braid trim like pic related but I'm not sure how to approach the belt + wider pointy pieces at the buttcape, and the parts where both sides of the edge need visible trim, like at the collar.

I have considered flat grey trim but it always seems to look so obviously costumey, especially next to an authentic looking shoulder cord. Any second opinions?

Does anyone have any recommendations for where to get a good Chibiusa wig for a decent price?
I don't mind putting some work into it, I figured I'd have to to keep things more budget-friendly, but I'm completely new to wig styling, so a wig with a bit more of a head start would be pretty great.

Or if there are any suggestions for really good fully styled wigs regardless of price, I wouldn't mind suggestions for that, as I was considering crossing a cosplay off of my list entirely so that'd free up my budget a bit.

For something decent and recognizable but nothing special to write home about, a run of the mill Ebay wig that comes with 2 clip in ponytails is probably your best bet for ~30 dollars. Fluff it up some when it arrives and you'll be fine, just not winning any awards.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do for Adelie's feet? I was just going to sew the white/yellow onto the leggings and walk around "barefoot" but the more I look at it the more I want to try and get her long toe and the heel shape in there, not sure how to go about doing that though. Also worrying if I do end up using something underneath the legging that just sewing the colors so they fit on top might look weird, doing something solid on the top of the legging and painting on it might be better? Not sure what I'd use though. Also not sure how to go about making sure whatever I do end up doing doesn't kill my feet.

The range on that is probably around $70 from a Chinese company to $700+ from a working professional tailor with a degree from a good fashion institution. A hobbyist or semi-pro's price is going to be in between those two extremes but there will still be a range. Custom work isn't really fungible and people price their work all over the map, so the question is really is it worth it to you to pay the quoted price based on that person's portfolio.

1. Find as many reference pictures of your character as you can: back, front, close-ups of little details.
2. Break down the costume parts in your head: wig, footwear, props, each item of clothing.
3. Look for a wig of the right colour and length, if there's already a character wig available, great, if not you're going to need to think about styling so get a wig that has the right length, and keep in mind the type of bangs you'll need and whether or not its heat resistant.
4. Look for footwear. sometimes you'll find a perfect match, sometimes you'll have to make bootcovers or rat-fuck some cheap boots (possibly thrifted). If that's the case just look for something that has the right sole and toe shape.
5. Get a basic understanding of fabrics, what works and what doesn't. Shiny fabrics like satin and PVC don't do well with cameras, don't use a thick fabric for something with a lot of drape, don't use a thin fabric for something that's supposed to be thick like leather.
6. If something similar exists, try and thrift it or find it online, but you may need to tailor, butcher, paint, or add things to get it to look right.
7. Learn to work with things like paperclay, resin, and Sculpey/Fimo for little details. Studs and spikes are available in bulk online too. Also learn about dyes and paints, like flower paint works pretty well on flexible things where fabric paint would look awful or spraypaint would crack and flake.
8. If your character has eyes a different colour from your own, look into getting coloured contacts. You'll need a copy of your prescription to order from anywhere reputable and there are a rare few that can't wear coloured contacts so this isn't a requirement, just recommended.

That's just a basic rundown of the process.

No one really likes to spoonfeed and cosplay is a hobby that requires a high degree of self sufficiency unless you're just going to commission or buy pre-made. The help threads are usually for more specific questions.

Seconding the chicken cutlets, but also, make sure your top is really well-fitting. You want something that can lift and support you, not just sit over your chest. >dye it black
It's very, very hard to find a good, true black dye to start with. Don't expect black. Expect some odd shade of purple-black or green-black.
And dyes result in base color X black, not painting it over, so the print colors will blend with black and you'll be able to see blackish blobs the background. You can try a test swatch if possible, but I have doubts that you'll get the results you want.

I'm working on my first cosplay right now, it's the NCR Ranger (pic related). I picked it because it seemed like it could be done pretty cheap and with little to no sewing, but that fucking coat is gonna cause me problems.

Your best route is to find out what the coat is called and type that in plus "used" in froogle.com
I wouldn't attempt making it from scratch. The coat is made out of a thick material which can be very expensive, its probably more expensive to make it than it is to buy a polyester leather new coat or a used real leather coat.
From that point it'd be pretty easy to put holes in it and make it look dirty.

Honestly no one will care. You will NEED to buy foundation in person, so muster up your courage and get out there. Go to a drug store and start testing their shades. If you've got stores like Ulta or Sephora, even better. Take a friend with you if you're nervous.

People care way less about you than you think.

Is there a good pattern out there for Aya Drevis from Mad Father? The closest I've been able to find is an Alice in Wonderland pattern, but I figured I would ask here.

Also, how to make the inside of sewn clothes look good without a serger/overlock machine? I plan to buy one soon, but if I have to start this costume with a regular sewing machine, I would like the seams and inside to at least look a little better, if that makes sense. (Sorry if I sound fucking stupid but I'm still pretty new to sewing.)

Also, mini chainsaw tutorials and general help on that would be incredible. Thanks in advance, seagulls!

Amano likes to do this thing where he'll just sorta draw squiggly lines and splat gold watercolor over them and you have to play "is that armor or fabric" and I'm sick of it. I want to start his design for Aerith because I'm on an unending crusade to do all her outfits but I've never tackled an Amano design before. Example image doesn't include any of his FF7 work because they're all nasty monochrome and I'm still trying to suss out basic shapes.

So my question to you guys is: should I try to go for the layered applique look? Get a bunch of silver stamped metal bits off taobao and sew them on individually? Embroidery? Has anyone here ever tackled Amano's designs before? I'm in uncharted territory here, guys.

Can anyone give me suggestions on how to do the tail for an Re-Class cosplay? I figured the head at the end would be made with craft foam or something equally lightweight and the actual tail would be stuffed fabric, but I want to put something in it so it'll stand up instead of just flopping around.

I could just use a wire framework or something if it was static, but I'd really like to make it articulated somehow so I could reposition it on the fly for photos (and to be able to fold it up when I'm just moving around). It's pretty large but it shouldn't be terribly heavy if I construct it right.

Trying to find a suitable snake skin fabric for her tail. I've been searching for hours and all I kind find is:

Not sure if I'll go for a pinkish or off white material for her underside.

Also any help on construction would be amazing. I probably won't go for the full length accuracy but I would still like it to be fairly a long tail. ( I dont need to be able to walk much, I'll get someone to transport me for photoshoots ect..)

Thank you, anons! I will definitely have to look up a French seam tutorial.

I was wondering what fabric I should use for her dress, apron, and bow? And possibly a lining for the inside of the dress if I need it. I'm still pretty new to sewing so I was hoping for something easy to work with. I've Googled already, but figured I would ask here as well.

Also, I couldn't find a dress pattern, but I found 2 separate ones, a blouse and skirt pattern. The blouse is pretty much perfect except it needs puff sleeves and the skirt just needs to be lengthened. I was thinking maybe I could combine them into a dress, or is that harder than it sounds? It would be awesome if I could because both of the patterns are free. How would I go about it?

Patterns can be spliced together, but turning a blouse into a dress is not something I would recommend for a beginner. I would really recommend you pick up a dress pattern. As a beginner to pattern alteration, you need something that's designed to zip down the back and has sleeves, collar, and waist seam (you can simply chop off the top of a princess seamed dress to add a waist seam, but if you can find a dress that already has one placing the seam is one less thing to figure out). Altering fitted sleeves to gigot sleeves, using either a gathered dirndl or flared skirt, and/or making a collar more pointy in the front are easier changes to make to a pattern because they don't require any real knowledge of fit or drafting.

different anon but aerith's amano skin from dissidia is about as toned down and half-assed as they could possibly manage compared to the original renderings. iirc it's also missing a cape. might have been made that way so they could swap base models as few times as possible.

I'd say layered applique or embroidery, since hard armor would probably make the dress stiff and chunky. especially since it's all along that bottom edge.

4) Invisible zipper should be sewn in before you put in the waistband. It goes between two pleats, either on the left side or back side of the skirt, depending on your preference/reference art
5) Remember to sew a pair of skirt hook & eyes on the waistband for actually holding the skirt closed

The anime outfit you posted has more of an armor-ish look to the shoulders. I would look up cosplay pauldron tutorials, but generally you would be making an eva foam base and then either painting or covering the base with fabric. I personally think a leather cover for the shoulder pauldrons could look really nice with this design. There's a couple really nice tutorials by Kamui for attaching and making shoulder pauldrons, and I believe that deviantart has some nice tutorials about covering foam armor with fabric.
The All Star Battle design looks more like a sleeve than shoulder amor, with a piping trim on the end. The piping kind of reminds me of the hip rolls on the Sailor Moon outfits, so I would search for methods on how to do those. The sleeve pattern itself looks asymmetric and extends more on the top than it does the bottom-- I know there's a specific name for this kind of sleeve, but I cannot recall it. But when looking for a pattern for these sleeves, look for that kind of shape!

You will have to draft new sleeve patterns in the right shape but make sure the top measurement that gets set into the dress matches the original sleeve or it won't fit nicely. If you aren't doing a lining, it's likely the top will have facings. Use interfacing to reinforce that for a less flimsy look. Making a muslin or a mock-up to correct anything or make adjustments is a good way to learn and fit things correctly before you cut in to your more expensive fabric. Many patterns do not fit correctly without adjustments.

I watched the whole game on YouTube. If some Link cosplayer wearing the green tunic told me they were Wolf Link, I wouldn't think it was funny, I'd just assume they were confused/got hit with a hammer before attending the con.

Anon, you came into the thread asking a pretty stupid question and you're basically demanding help from start to finish. This is rude, which is why people are being rude in return, which is apparently making you throw a tantrum. You know you have to be 18 or older to be here right?

If you like a certain idea then you should just go for it. If you're not sure about the execution of it, look at other gijinka cosplays (of which there are many, and easy to find too!) and see what they have done. Some gijinka are completely humanoid so the anon who said TP Link is literally what you're looking for was not incorrect.

Once you have a good idea of your end goal, start looking at tutorials. Then when you have SPECIFIC cosplay questions you can come here and ask for help. Help threads are anons helping other anons for free out of the kindness of their heart. As you have astutely observed, cosplay and other hobbies take time. Ain't nobody got time to hold your little paw through an entire damn costume from concept to construction.

Anyone have some tips or good methods of sealing and more importantly smoothing out extruded or expanded polystyrene board?

I'm likely resin casting it in the end so its basically just to get a nice smooth finish for that process. I've heard gesso, bondo, wood sealer, and even drywall filler, but I really have no idea what would get a nice smooth seal in the end.

>Are there any dress pattern similar to hers?
Flip through Simplicity, Butterick, and McCall's pattern books online or in person to find something similar.

>Also how would I make the sleeves so that they wont slide up and down my arm?
You'll need fashion tape, sock glue, and/or elastics at points to keep the pieces from falling down your arms and socks staying up on your thighs.

>How would I go about making the weird lace on the top of the stockings?
I'd suggest separately and simply add two snaps on the inside of the sock topper and the outside of the socks to put them together.
>How do I make the choker?
Look up choker tutorials.
>Material suggestions would also be helpful
Good bridal satin, taffeta, or charmeuse without the cheapo shine. Sateen and garbadine may also work if slippery fabrics are too difficult.

>I'm a complete newbie to cosplaying
Okay, so my recommendation is that you try making her headdress first and see how that looks. I don't think the costume is beginner-friendly unless you don't care about accuracy and you're okay with making something on par or worse than Chinese sweatshop pieces. The dress is form-fitting and there's a decent amount of details and separate pieces. It would be very, very easy to slip up and wind up looking like a wannabe-lolita ita mess.

Don't try to use the white stuff that's made up of little pellets (or whatever you want to call them). It's much too weak and would be an absolute nightmare to work with. What you want is the pink insulation foam which is rigid and can be easily carved/sanded and sealed with gesso or even by paper macheing it. Just remember to sand afterwards too. I hear paper mache using wallpaper glue is REALLY durable, but I haven't tried it.

Bondo/filler is for fixing mistakes and maybe adding little detaily bits, your prop would weigh about eight tons if you used it as a sealant because it's heavy stuff.

>> No.8471901

>>8471569
This is blue stuff. It is basically similar to the pink insulation though slightly more durable, same basic structure just a bit more dense.

I'll be recasting it so this is just a prototype, so if it ends up heavy it doesn't matter, I just don't know an efficient way to get it sealed and smooth so it can pass as metal when I redo it in plastic.

I have three questions regarding the armors I'm making.
First, How do I do the undershirt from the arzuros armor? It loooks like some kind of chinese dress, but since it will be covered by the chest and hip armor, It would be pointless to actually do it,so I´m looking for something simpler.
Second: How to make the Rathian Chestplate? I couldn't find any higher resolution pic of this armor, and the in-game model isn't better, but I'm assuming its made of scales, so EVA foam seems like a good choice.
And third: I want to make a palico armor for my cat if, AND ONLY IF its not harmful to his health in any way. This might be more of a health related question, but I want to be completly sure that he won´t have an allergic reaction to the materials, get a heathstroke or something.
