Making this Link.
Used linen for the scarf, the patten is embroidery and I dip dyed it for accurate colour.

Considering sanded cotton for the shirt and pants.

Not sure what to make the tunic from. Was considering Chenille because I want it really textured. If the colour is flat I'll dye it to make it look more worn. But it needs to be a thick fabric so it doesn't show the lumps and bumps of the chainmail underneath.
Any suggestions? Upholstery weaves maybe?

Also no budget on this costume.

Chenille is kind of a bizarre choice IMO, I associate it with sofas and towels, maybe small rugs. I'd stick with linen or twill. If you really want the subtle color variation, green denim might even be good. Might be too heavy though.

I want it warm and soft looking. I was looking at designers guild fabric but none of the greens were bright enough.

Oh, you want soft? I went for sturdy fabrics since he's wearing armor.

Chenille would still be pretty strange I think. I don't see the texture of it at all in the picture. You could look into wool fabrics, many of them would have the plush look you seem to be going for while being an "authentic" fiber?

Heavy canvas, denim or twill. Something like that would be hard to make well, especially since you said you're inexperienced. I would find a pair of coveralls or pants (probably men's so they're big and baggy, check the thrift store) and weather/modify them.

Thanks. I will trust in this canvas suggestion though I personally don't see it. I think my efforts may be misplaced because the 'model' wearing it is actually an action figure so perhaps the texture is just amplified due to relative size?

Bottomweight twill, poplin, gabardine, bengaline, or suiting. If you can, pick one that has a polyester-cotton blend mix so that it won't wrinkle as badly as 100% cotton fabrics. Also, line the top but just wear a cooling sleeveless athletic tops (wifebeater) to wick sweat. You don't need to line the pants.

Polyester suiting
>>8434244
I think suede would work for the jacket, linen for the shirt and maybe a thicker linen for the trousers. I don't think they should have the exact same texture.
>>8434293
For starters make the pattern wide so it doesn't sit near your neck. Use interfacing and stiffening materials to make the collar stand up.

>> No.8434473

>>8432367
You could probably use linen for the whole outfit. I think the thickness and large weave will give it a nice texture, plus its thick weight will hide the maille. It also won't overheat you. Wash it a bunch of times in the machine and linen gets nice and fluffy.

>>8433373
Hmm, try a knit of some kind. An interlock maybe. It'll be a bit heavy but flow well. Or cut it on the bias of cotton. Reinforce the arms, collar, and headpiece with elastic. You'll probably have to make a 3/4 hoop skirt to get it to flow out that far.

Either applique it as the other anon said or embroider it, since it looks not that big. You can even use shiny embroidery floss to make it look really cool.

>>8433562
What >>8433971 said. I would suggest linen if you think you can handle it. It would be really cooling to wear and comfy but it wrinkles. If you wash it a bunch it doesn't wrinkle that bad. It also looks cool.

>>8434244
From that render the shirt honestly looks like pig leather. with big stitching holes going down the front. Pants look like burlap, sash is painted red silk, coat is green wool with dark green leather detailing plus tons of textured painting, and finally the vest is more painted silk with a lovely painted placket.

>>8434293
A knit? It doesn't look that tight. Dye it really dark. Applique the red lines with bias tape or silk ribbon. Make the collar's structure out of EVA foam and then sew a box around it. Make the arm guards out of EVA foam and cover in the matching fabric.

I'm a little torn. I don't know whether to make the pants/shirt out of something different/more flowy than the capelet or whether I should just interface the fabric for the capelet and not for the pants/shirt. I'd ideally like to make the shirt and pants out of a midweight knit and maybe the capelet, butt-skirt, and tabard out of twill? Does that sound reasonable or would it look too weird?

I have a light grey poly/cotton poplin blend for the trim on the capelet/butt-skirt/tabard and a slightly darker/warmer grey cotton sateen for the stripe on the pants -- they look like different greys in this ref but in the in-game model they're more similar, so I dunno. I kind of like the idea of doing a different grey for the pants stripe, but I'm not sure if that would look too disjointed.

In the concept art book for 3 it says denim. Which makes sense for American Workwear at the time frame apparently.

It's so bloody hard to tell in the screenshots for 4 though. Graphics have taken a back seat to make way for settlements and crafting and now it looks like a gross painted on catsuit again.

I'd say it's just down to personal interpretation. I'm think I'm gonna go with denim or twill. Will be easier to give a real leather, worn look. Might put the yellow parts on with a kind of pleather.

The real question is when can I mod in a Tunnel Snakes jacket.

I've posted this one a few times, but I'm still trying to work it out.

Any suggestions for a pleated skirt that will have embroidery? I'm planning on embroider on the flower details with faux silk (probably) and then pleating it, so it should be able to hold up well with embroider and pleats (I'll be using starch) but nothing too stiff to make the pleats look weird would be ideal.

Ah, that makes sense.

My issue is that its not easy for me to get to the fabric store so I was hoping there might be some sort of chart that would help me choose the right type of fabric so I could order it online without worrying about it being too thick/thin for a project.

Go to fabric store, study fabrics, especially how they look when piled on a flat surface, since this is how many online stock photos are taken & gives you a lot of visual info about the properties of a fabric. Go online with the names of fabrics that you learned, order swatches in the colors that you think may be accurate.
