forgot to post this earlier but I saw this on my newsfeed. why do 14 year olds always make everything so dramatic? chill girl, it's just clothes, you're not announcing your sexuality to your homophobic bible thumping parents. calm down. i think if you're that young and you live in a situation where your parents won't let you dress out of the ordinary than perhaps you should wait until you're a bit older (or at least figure out a better game plan i.e. find someone who's home you could hide your clothes at)

The last few times I reserved a set, I was told I could cancel as I'd obviously ordered a whole set and the main piece wasn't available. That was a while ago, though (like, years).

I've mentioned this before, but as a cop-out you could always say you only want the socks if the dress is available. However, it does sometimes result in a bit of passive-aggressiveness in their replies, hopefully they don't also penalise you by moving you to the bottom of the waiting list if you wrote that.

My go-to for coording is to match your blouse and legwear in colour (or at least the main colour of your legwear), then match headwear and shoes to the main piece. For choosing blouse/legwear colour, go with a neutral or an accent colour from the dress. That's the base, but then depending on the dress and how you like to accessorise you could maybe bring in an extra colour in accessories or if you have a bolero on as well as a blouse etc. It's pretty much a no-fail system and though it can be basic you can then build on it.

I do have a baby jsk from 2012 as well and I would agree it certainly was not what I was expecting from brand, but it still is pretty good, at least the tailoring is well done.

This dress is really notches down compared to what I do have. The skirt gather stitching is really wonky, and visible in a few part on the outside. The inside is just a mess, it really looks like babys first attempt at a gathered skirt.
The zipper installation is terrible as well. unfinished seams under the collar, which would be okay, but they do have surging in other areas, sooo why not there....

Mostly by working in patterns. So if you have a printed dress, pair them with OTKs that have a two-colour pattern where the base colour (say, white if it's a sweet outfit) matches your blouse and the pattern is an accent colour that suits the dress.

So for pic related, you choose to primarily have a white blouse and socks with pink shoes and a headbow to match. Then, to work in the third colour, say sax to match the pink you could pick white socks with a sax pattern (something neutral like bows or dots or ribbons would be easy) and then work that accent in with your other accessories, perhaps a smaller bow hairclip to go with the pink headbow and sax wristcuffs or bracelet. A white bag would be good, but a sax one might really pop.

Alternatively, you could maybe choose the brown from the print for your blouse and socks, perhaps using a bolero instead of a blouse to cover more of the pink and then brown boots instead of brown legwear. Then if you have the pink headbow again to match the dresses main colour you can still work in an accent in the smaller accessory, perhaps yellow this time in the form of tights (since you won't see much of them) and again a smaller hair accessory. A brown bag would match easily, as would a pink one, but yellow would be fun.

That's a bit rambly, I know, but I hope it made some sense.

When I work with more than two colors (I've done up to four before) I try to work the colors into the top middle and bottom of the coordinate. I try to pull out accent colors that appear within the dress and then place them throughout.

Like >>8431394 said, socks with colors and patterns are helpful in bringing accent colors down to the bottom portion of the coord. But if you're limited on socks you can try some kind of attachment to your shoes to draw that color down. I've made attachments on short boots before, bows with florals to attach to shoe straps, shoe clips can work too. It helps to be creative.

It helps to think of your coordinate in 3rds: top, middle and bottom. And then make sure that each color you use is present in each. I usually pick one color to be my dominant accent color and the others play into it.

And again, sometimes you are limited by what you can get your hands on. If it doesn't work out, you can try it again when you find something that works better.

Also important to note: If you're using pattern socks, make sure those patterns and motifs play into your main piece and appear within them. Those floral socks might have the right color, but the theme is going to clash with something like, say Sugary carnival. This is where hunting for items for your coord can get tricky! Sometimes it comes straight down to customization and being creative.

Pic related: Some examples of some recent coords where I used more than two colors. They could be better, but I hope this illustrates the concept well enough.

I've seen a ton of Baby/Aatp items, both old and new (helps living near a store) and the construction and quality varies a lot. Most of the cotton dresses tend to not have lining in the bodice and are shirred with elastic sewn on, not inside channels. With thicker material it doesn't really matter because it still looks good worn, but the thinner summer dresses can end up looking bad because the fabric is too lightweight, wrinkles easily, and can show the seams and stuff underneath. Anything with boning isn't great either because they use cheap, bendy plastic boning. Imo their best stuff is non-print velveteen, wool blends, jaquard, or their fancy OTT dresses (although those aren't really my taste).

I have to say, anon, that zipper looks mighty dodgy to me. I wonder if your seller modded it or replaced a broken zipper or something. I'm not sure about the length, but the fraying threads and totally unfinished lining right below the zipper is unusual. On my dresses wih zippers both sides of the lining are serged finished before coming together and being serged together.)

The skirt gathering doesn't look all that unusual, even if the gathering looks slightly wonky. I wonder if some part of this messiness might be attributed to the owner wearing it a lot or not caring for it properly, especially if the fabric has pilled.

The care tag should be attached to one of the seams in the skirt lining, if that helps.

This annoys me too, on a couple of dresses that need them, and that I want to wear with black tops I make my own lining and sew them in, but for the price we pay and the way Baby keeps hiking their prices up I feel like I shouldn't have to do this. On the upside, I've considered that if I do need some small extra sliver of fabric for modifications, I could probably remove the facing, line the dress with a matching fabric, and use the facing fabric.

>take a dress apart and put it back together

Heh. Don't do that. Definitely avoid it whenever you can, not just btssb/aatp, but also AP and Meta and err, every other brand. Just marking the seams and then resewing it back together is really easy, it's the serging and the sheer amount of work cutting it open carefully that will be troublesome.

A lot of commercial clothes are sewn at the seams first, and then have their raw edges serged together. You can see an example in the collage above (or check your own clothes), the skirt, skirt lining and the bodice are all serged together in one go, the skirt is not serged seperately from the bodice. You can also see how under the zipper, the two seam allowances are brought together and then serged as one single raw edge, not seperately.

This means that when you want to cut them open, you're going to have to cut through every serging on every raw edge of every seam. It's a lot of work, plus don't underestimate the places like where one seam might be connected to other things, (like where the bodice seams meet the skirt). And *then*, after you're done cutting apart everything and sewing it back together (which is actually the easy part), you're now left with all those raw edges that you will have to serge, zigzag stitch with a stabilizer (zigzag tends to distort the fabric if you use it at the edge of the fabric), or God help you if you decide you want to blanket stitch them by hand to minimise loss of fabric.

If you're interested in how to do the bodice lining, I'll outline how I do it (someone else might have a different method):

>> No.8432386

>>8432385

When I make my bodice lining, what I do is place the dress on a flat surface, pick a panel, and then try to lay the dress so that that panel is as flat as possible. I put a piece of paper over it and trace out the shape. Repeat with the other panels, skip the shirred panels. Then I make up the bodice lining with this traced pattern; I only sew the seams together, then pin it to the dress (turn it inside out and pin the lining to the bodice with sewing pins) to check the fit. All my traced patterns work so far, if it doesn't fit you'll have to start tracing again, make sure the panel you're tracing is laid out as flat as you can make it. I do have to note that I've never worked with problematic bodices with gathers or funky designs though.

After checking the lining fits, the next step is to iron all the raw edges inwards and press the seams (the raw edges do not need finishing since I sew the lining completely into the dress). Then pin it back to the dress, and sew it to dress with whipstitch. The lining goes between the facing and the bodice, and I usually whipstitch the facing to the lining as well.

For the shirred panels, I normally skip it as the fabric gathers makes the fabric opaque enough for a dark blouse not to show much, I just whipstitch the lining straight down alongside the shirred panels. If you want to, then the shape for a half shirred dress is a trapezoid and for a quarter shirred dress is a rectangle. It's a matter of finding the right measurements, then cutting out the fabric, pressing the raw edges in, then whipstitching it to the dress while making sure you're not permanently sewing the gathers in place. After that, you can stretch the shirred panel and run a couple of sewing machine lines to get the lining to "stick" to the shirred panel.

Sorry, this is a block of text. Maybe the next time I line a dress I'll make a tutorial and post the link here? I won't have the time until late next month though.

Different PK owner here with pics.
I agree some of the serging is a little wonky and wasn't sure why they left raw edges even if it was covered by facing. But wow-- I'm guessing their quality check is just inconsistent? I didn't see any stitches at the gather under the waistband. I'm also assuming my zipper was shorter because the previous owner clipped it. I got it nwt a few months after its release from egl sales.

My main complaints are like everyone else has been saying. The fabric pills like a mofo, the zipper tends to get stuck around the "waist band", and of course the straps. Those goddamn straps. I think about parting with it sometimes.. but I love the design too much.

Almost my entire closet is baby and everything I own has been great quality. I only own one thin cotton dress by baby, and it's lined. Everything else is made out of incredibly thick fabric or lined as well. I'm a seamstress as well in my day job, and can tell you the construction is wonderful.

I'm guessing they we're testing out a different factory when they made this piece? Or you unfortunately had bad luck and got one that has been altered (which is honestly what it looks like to me) The stitching in the second and third top row pictures on the gathers makes it obvious whoever was sewing this garment was vastly inexperienced with clothing construction.

Why any one would think this is a mystery. I admit that I'm super fucking lazy when I line my own garments, not finishing seams and having messy stitching/not cutting threads cause in the end it'll all be hidden but lining adds so much to a garment and I'm 99% that brans don't use lining something as an excuse to slack off like I do.

I think it's not so much whether this dress was worth $230 of labour and materials, but it's moreso that the design is kind of underwhelming. Like other anon says, it looks like a dress from Asos rather than a lolita brand.

Pic related retailed at $230 and has a burando label by the way, so I do think $250 is definitely overpricing.

>> No.8433882

>>8433855
Pic related is mass produced and based on average retail pricing would have cost approximately $65 to make in total. This includes all labour and materials. There is no way that a single person could justify such a low price for a custom made garment. Batch size is smaller, meaning no saving on cutting costs, no buying bulk fabric, etc.

Brand is surprisingly cheap. You are clearly used to throwaway fashion, but you will find that a "good" fashion label will be selling a fitted dress for $600+.

Most lolitas don't realize that brand is actually not that great quality. The major brands like AP, BtSSB, MMM, etc. are the best the fashion has to offer as far as quality, and lolitas typically don't know much about tailoring outside of lolita, so they tend to think it's much better than it really is. I'm not hating on brand or anything, I'm a shameless brandwhore and have never bought a single offbrand main piece in the 8 years I've been a lolita, I'm just simply stating facts. Take any decently seamstress into a AP store and I guarantee she will agree that the prices of those dresses do not reflect the quality. They reflect the store costs and niche.

Definitely, if anything, lolita is much better priced than most fashions. Just look at any high fashion designers. They're overpriced, I'll agree, but on the other hand, they're also reliably good quality.

You only have to look at Jesus Diamante to see what truly overpriced low quality dresses are. Same pricing as lolita dresses, but the skirts are narrower (meaning they use less fabric) and the lace is cheap plastic raschel lace.

On the other hand. If you go out strictly looking for the highest quality dress ever, pretty soon you'll find yourself standing in a Chanel shop looking at a dress that's one-of-a-kind and made to fit you alone perfectly, hand-sewn trim, high quality fabric and trim, couture sewing, moves with you when you walk -- and the price tag is easily 10-100x of a lolita outfit.

Lolita's a nice mid-level quality. Yes, it's overpriced, but it's not really that expensive. Yes, it's mass-produced, but that doesn't mean it's on the same level as cheap Leg Avenue shit. For the price you get very well constructed dresses made of decent fabric, and the trim is definitely not the cheap stuff.

As consumers, mass production makes this kind of mid-level quality affordable for us, so you can certainly bet I'm all for mass production, not against it. It's great that I can get a good-looking dress for $250 instead of having to settle for a basic-looking dress just because I'm paying someone to sew it in their home.

Then, for the special occassions where I do need something that's tailored specially for me, made for me and me alone, that's the time when I look for a good commissioner and pay her what her skills are worth, not according to what a mass market dress is priced at. See, it's totally okay to know that this and that are not the same, and to like the freedom of having both options.

She said she didn't think it was "worth $100" without an explanation. Both of you should at least be able to file a formal complaint that a package was lost and get someone to try and figure out exactly where it was delivered to, and then take things on from there. Also check whether you're covered or insured against mail loss. Particularly if the tracking shows the parcel was delivered to one zipcode while your receipt (or if you have a photo of the address before you mailed it out), it should be easy to point out that the post office is at fault.

Do people like or want price tags? i've got probably over a hundred of them from various brands by now, I wonder if there's any use to them, or if I should just throw them out? Obviously I'll be saving the ones that come with spare buttons and fabric swatches, it's the plain cardboard ones with nothing on them that I don't know if I should keep.

I've seen someone try to sell them on egl comm sales years ago, and that person got mocked here for it, but hey, if someone wants them for arts and crafts I'll put them up as a pay-shipping-only kind of deal. I've worked as a professional seamstress, and the price of lolita clothing (not the shoes or bags or jewelry) is reasonable for manufactured clothing of that quality level, especially since they have small production runs and physical locations. The quality of brand is generally on par with midlevel western clothing brands for which you'd expect to spend $160-$200 for a simple cut dress without ruffles and trims and ~$100 for a plain blouse. The better lolita brands are as well made as off-the-rack lines from US designers like Kate Spade, who charge upwards of $400 for a dress and $200 for a cotton cardigan. Jane Marple is generally better made at the same price point. As with all fashion, you are paying for the design in addition to the quality of the cut, materials, and quality control. Every clothing designer puts out some duds and has a range of quality in their products, but lolita is by no means uniquely "overpriced" or out of line price-wise with other off the rack clothing brands.

I suppose it's because of how huge a factor color coordination is in putting outfits together, but you don't generally see that kind of importance put on hair color in other kinds of fashion. Dunno, just find it funny I guess, but I completely understand the reason why people care about it more in this fashion.

Fwiw, I think Asians look great with natural color hair in every style. But have you tried milk tea blends? Or chocolate with chestnut?

>>8435389
I'm pale with sallow skin so I use white, platinum, ashy blonde or black for Gothic/Kuro/Shiro and everything from ash blonde to milk tea to a chocolate blend for classic. On me, black wig for classic looks harsh. I like blonde wigs on lots of people but they have to be the right blonde go well with your skin tone. I think milk tea suits the most skin tones if people only get one wig for everything.

I got Dream Holic's (yeah I know) Apple Jelly in chocolate and it looks so bad against my skin (I'm pale) and so damn unnatural. I don't know if it's just a combination of my skin + dark eyes or something (can't wear contacts thanks to my astigmatism). I haven't dared to try any lighter combination because Im afraid of just wasting money and it looking shit on me. Hence I just stick with black wigs. I just looked up milk tea blend wigs and they're really cute (reminds me of the swan kiss girls) but just.. urgh.. I know it'll look shit on me.

I always did think that DH's chocolate was a little bit too light to be... well, chocolate.

I do, but it's probably stashed somewhere because I'm in the process of moving some stuff. Also at work atm so if you check back in about 4-5 hours I can post some shitty mobile pics. I haven't cut the bangs on it because I tried it on, recoiled in horror when I saw myself in the mirror and proceeded to stuff it back into the bag.

I use rule of 3rds. Your body is divided into three parts. Head (wig and headbow), torso/midsection (purse included here) and legwear. Use 1 base color in each of these parts. I had to start from the beginning too, and I found doing 1-3 color coords greatly helped (if 3rd color is neutral - otherwise, 2 colors, keep it simple)
keep it simple, stupid is good advice if you wanna level up your coord from where you are

I wonder, could we take some more photos of the interiors of different brand pieces? I'm really interested in seeing how different things are lined/faced/etc, but there's nothing on Google.

Just personal opinion, but the contrast really adds to the stylized doll look, with the typical blond hair and big eyes. I am sure some gothic coords would look better with darker hair or even jet black for a more sophisticated look though.

My natural hair is basically black ("Asian natural black"), which doesn't look great next to brown and only seems to work if my coord is casual or has some black in it. It's easier to just wear a wig anyways than to style my own hair in some desperate attempt to match.

Can anyone recommend a decent quality, but cheap, witch hat? I need something I can decorate for a Halloween coord- I'm going to add a lot of trim & such to it but I need a base that's not too crappy for lolita. I'm flexible on size/style, but I need it to be black and ideally around $20 or less.

>> No.8436256

Just make it from felt. Super easy. Since you are adding trims you can use black millinery for the brim and disguise it with lace.

I'm doing a wardrobe clean out and I can't decide if I want to get rid of my demonias. Would they work ok with gothic or are they too chunky?

Is this dress Kyary Pamyu Pamyu wear during her Colorful Panic Toy Box tour a brand OP or is this an original design? I like it a lot and I was wondering if I could buy it somewhere. I don't want to do a replica. It's a pain in the ass to do replicas with such intricate design.
