Hey /cgl/

This is not strictly a cosplay question, but it involves patterns so I figure that someone out there might be interested in puppet making as it seems like the kind of creative hobby that might go hand in hand other designy stuff.

I'm trying to make some puppets for a short film that I'm going to be shooting with a friend soon. The only problem is that there are very few free puppet patterns that are half decent. The puppet thats I want to make are Muppet style ones, with room for hands inside to manipulate the faces.

I've found some patterns for a round head style, but we really need an oblong headed puppet (pic related). The only site that you can buy puppet patterns from charges like $60/pattern and they don't even send you the thing electronically, they ship it so to get it to the UK it would be basically the same again. And even then its only a one use job! This is vastly out of our price range.

I cant find any decent patterns online that are in good quality except for one round head pattern, but we'd like the option of different styles.

I don't suppose any of you lovely people have any patterns that I could use? I've tried torrent sites, google, etc. to no avail. The site I mentioned about buying from is called ProjectPuppet, if anyone has any of these patterns I could use I would be very grateful.

I ran into the same problem. the only effective solution is to take the generic kermit the frog pattern that is quite easy to find on hobby forums and elongate the head in photoshop or with a pencil after printing.

Best of luck

Where did you find the circular head pattern? I tried looking for puppet patterns a while ago, and couldn't even find that. I ended up free-handing a pattern and it...wasn't good.

This is the pattern I used to make a puppet as in picture. (it looks shit I know, I was testing the pattern).

Its a neat little pattern, but I want something more oblond, OP pic related.

OP, do you have a Joann's near you? If you want to take the fursuit maker route, pick up some upholstery foam (the thick kind, usually always 50% off at Joann's) and carve whatever shapes you need from it.

Then, cover the shape with duct tape, peel it off, and cut darts/slits to flatten it from there. Cover the sticky side with newsprint or something and voila: pattern.

Search "duct tape pattern" on YT if you need some visuals to go by, although fair warning you'll get a bunch of "babbys first fursuit ^w^" too

Hey all, OP here

I found a pattern that I looked pretty decent, just gave it a go and I'm super super proud of the results! Pic related

The pattern is a .pdf and I dont know if I can post it as an imagine here, so I don't want to post a link to the page I got it from as I know links tend to get your post removed on this board.

If you want to get hold of the FREE pattern I used and instructions on how to make it, google search for "Muppet Style Puppet Tutorial" and click the first link.

Really pleased with how its come out! Looks very oddly anatomic.

OP, to keep it board related, Maybe you could try dumping pictures of cosplays that require some level of puppeteering, or characters with puppets?

I'm not really into puppetry (yet) but I would certainly like to try my hand at it in the future. This thread definitely got me excited about trying to figure out how to make a working Mr. Hat.

I made one once, but scrapped the whole cosplay because I was a noob and couldn't sew.
But I made the head from cardboard tubing and covered it in a pattern (like an adhesive fake wood paper), then put hinges inside on the back of the mouth and head, attached with springs, again to mouth and head a few inches apart in the back. The tension kept it closed when in rest.
Then there was a ring inside the front of the mouth where I attached a string I could hide and pull from behind my back.
TOO BAD I COULDN'T SEW A DRESS AT THE TIME.

I wanted to add some features to this one, so I decided to stack foam on rather than carve it out. I hope that when I fleece it, it will take some of the squareness off. We shall see.

Do you guys think I should have carved foam into a curvy chin or do it like this?

This is one of my favorite threads on the board tbh. I'm so excited for all of this- I always wanted to make puppets of some of my favorite characters, especially since some are narcissists with puppets of themselves already.

Nope. Nothing is wrong with scaring people as long as it doesn't fuck with their actual health.

thanks man, I don't usually make boards on 4chan but I didnt know what other board this would be relevant too

Won't have any updates till after the weekend as I'm going away, next steps will be skinning bodies and faces and somehow attaching them... adding features will be fun. Oh I found a solution to my original question in the OP. I made a pattern myself and made a new puppet. Pattern is on my work pc, I'll post it tomorrow. Pic related is the new puppet head.

Five puppet heads complete so far, one doesn't have a mouth plate because his mouth is going to be a zipper behind which are white, sharp teeth. You'll see...

Also have two bodies and arms which I'm going to skin first, so you'll see them soon. Fucking pumped to get filming on this now, so I'm getting impatient with it all a bit. But things like this take time, I guess...

To answer your question btw about if foam is expensive.

This is how much foam I have left, including all the foam I've already used so far (5 heads, two bodies, arms and hands, plus a few mock ups and failed glues). I live in Wales and I got all of that foam for £16. The fleece was expensive, £56 for all that I need.

Oh, ah. Ignore Brandy. She's just sleeping.

I am very interested to see how these turn out. I'm working on a dragon puppet myself right now. I made two dragon puppets a couple years back, failed at them being actual usable puppets, so just carried them around as regular props. I'm really flaying around trying to get my new puppet to actually work.
