>so many obviously popular panels stuffed into tiny rooms, standing room only or turning people away within 5 minutes of the panel starting
I only got to see about half the panels I wanted to. But I'm sure all the steampunk events got more room than they could ever use...

>> No.8387549

>How fucked up was the scheduling?
Aniplex thought their panel only went until 9:45, as that was what they were told and what they had requested. In the middle of set-up, they were told it was actually until 10:15. Both their A/V and the A/V of Funimation and Crunchyroll was messed up, and the reps for all three companies were obviously frustrated due to having to yell loud enough for large groups of people to hear. This is how industry guests were treated. I'm sure you can imagine how regular panelists were treated.

>Any good stories from this con?
Someone took a photo at the Funimation Peep Show, was asked to delete it (side note- they repeated the no photos rule probably about 100 times before the incident so it wasn't a surprise to this guy), didn't delete it, and con security had to get involved. Hilarious to watch, great to see that five or so people waiting outside got to get a seat.

>Any notable cosplays?
Lots, actually! I was pleasantly surprised that not only were there a lot of Tharjas, but the ones I saw at least all looked great.

>Will you ever attend this con again?
Sure, if they have a complete overhaul of the retards in charge of programming, I'll consider it. I will never PAY for this con, again, though. I'm not saying I'll ghost, but I'm not saying I won't pretend I work for an anime news website for the third year in a row.

7!!! concert was a blast. Met a QT lesbian cosplayer, did some flirting, and wouldn't y'know it, we have a date set for tomorrow. Ran into an old friend and smoked hookah in the patio area. Watching Kitchen Discotheque on Laser Disc. There was a vendor with AMAZING cels for sale, and I got a super cute one of Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo looking bashful and blushing. The Cosplay Competition was fun.

>lows
Parking on Saturday, After being stuck at an intersection for about 20 minutes I had to park all the way at the Children's hospital and walk to and from in the dirt and grass slanting towards a busy highway access road. Not fun and sure as fuck not safe, especially walking it alone at like 2:00AM in weeaboo attire. Not cool A-Kon. This is seriously a safety hazard and shuttles should be provided, or arrangements should be made with neighboring parking lots to allow us to park closer. Also, the A-Kon lots were $20 a day.

Scheduling and panels were totally fucked as we all know. Was loving watching Macross Pluss on the big screen, then when part 3 ended children started poring in, and con staff informed us that we're not going to watch part 4 (the climax) because there is some gay ass Sword Art Online thing coming up next and they wanted those faggots to get settled early. I wanted to see the Hilarious Hentai Dubs, but there was an ungodly line for it, even when it was half way through. I wanted to see the Q&A with Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, but it was on Friday and I got stuck helping some vendor friends who needed me.

>>8387485
>How fucked up was the scheduling?
Incredibly, Very little I wanted to see, even less that I actually got to attend.

>Any good stories from this con?
Nothing wild or crazy.

>Any notable cosplays?
Nothing that was just totes amaze-balls, but I enjoyed a lot of them.

>Will you ever attend this con again?
If it is a week or two after Memorial Day weekend then yes, why not?

No place in the hotel good enough for router coverage, unless you want to pay the hotel for access to theirs. We'd tried to set up an A-Kon-only router last time and it got coverage through the main atrium and nowhere else. That building was built by the same guy that built Dana's building in Ghostbusters for all the signal-sucking weirdness that happens there. Probably some spectral erg eating all the wireless on top of the place being just too massive for a single rented router to hope to handle.

All in all, I think everyone in my group enjoyed themselves, though we did spend ridiculous amounts on alcohol. Far more than we really intended.
We had some gulls in on the festivities. It was a good time until Sunday morning when one of our new acquaintances discovered someone had nabbed her money during the party.
I'm not personally intending to return to AKon. I'll stick to less populous cons. It was too much of a pain to see anything I was interested in.

No one has posted pics, don't worry. The con sucked in advance this year, so a lot of /cgl/ didn't go. I do believe the overall attendance increased a bunch this year though? It was stuffy even at odd hours of the night. You're probably going to have to head to the a-kon 26 tag on tumblr for photos, or for better luck and less text posts, the Facebook albums (bless those folks that take a photo of literally every cosplayer they cross paths with).

Long lines and small rooms prevented me from seeing most panels I wanted to see, but I had a good time singing during the halftime show and seeing friends.
Really dislike the hotel layout, but the convention can't really help that, I guess.

>> No.8388435

It's really difficult as a panelist if I need wifi because then I have to use my own data to turn my phone into a wifi spot, just so I can run a gd ppt with youtube videos. Next year I guess I'll just download the videos and try to format the ppt to not go all crazy when I download it off google drive.

I think I attended more FANS panels than actual panels this year, too. I had a good time at lolita events but wished the lolita on a budget panel had a ppt and they weren't just talking without visual aides.

Sister ended up inviting some chick she met up to our room who asked to spend the night and then got bitchy when we said she couldn't sleep on one of the two beds. (four people in the room already.) Then ended up saying she'd sleep in her car, got caught by the cops, then called at 4am asking to stay again and once again, whining that she wouldn't sleep on the floor.

Luckily that was my only bad experience-- aside from having to wait half a fucking hour in the heat for food from a food truck that we had paid for.

The Omni is right across the street, but it's 500 rooms smaller. But given the fact that the Anatole had an entire floor for renovations and was down some rooms, that might not be as big of a dent. The rest of the hotels are a 2-5 block walk. I had no problem doing this at the cons up north, but they also don't have an active nightlife like the southern cons do. If we outgrow the Anatole, we might just be fucked. But given how much a-kon keeps messing up, I don't know how much growth the con will really get.

>How fucked up was the scheduling?
The smaller panels I went to were fine, but anything remotely "relevant" was overcrowded. The fact that you had to show up over an hour prior to the start of a large panel just to get in because the room it was hosted in was tiny as fuck is ridiculous

>Any good stories from this con?
At the Cross Ange screening, all the fedoras cheering every time a girl died was comedy gold

>Any notable cosplays?
I can count on one hand how many cosplays actually impressed me. There were a lot of people going that didn't even look like they were there for the con tbh.

>Will you ever attend this con again?
Won't ever attend Linecon again unless they change venues, this year was stupid. The worst part is, A-Fest isn't gonna be any better since they're broke this year, I guess this is just a bad year for the big two DFW cons.

>It's about time the con moves to an actual convention center.
But I love having cons at nice hotels because they are so much prettier. Also, hotels have bars and nice restaurants in them. I love being able to walk up and grab an adult beverage and people watch at bar/lounge area, as well as take a break and have a grown up meal in a fancy setting. Convention centers feel cold and empty.

>And a place that has some actual godamn parking.
I couldn't agree more. It would be nice if A-Kon made arrangements with neighboring business and hotels to allow for parking, as well as offer shuttle busses to the various lots. I saw a parking garage between lot D and the Renaissance hotel (I presume off limits to A-Kon attendees), and the Children's Hospital had a big lot and a garage (I parked in the lot on Saturday, but my god the walk all uneven dirt and grass next to a busy road, and was sketchy at night). Shuttles to satellite lots would have been nice, but considering how late the con runs, they would have to run 24/7, something very unlikely to happen...

So this year was great. I managed to not get sick until after the con! Last year I got a 102.5 degree fever on the second half of day 2. The year before I got a sinus infection and man moded through it, and this year I got another fever right after I got home, but it was not at the con! For some reason no matter what I get sick at AKON or after it every year.

So other than the above bull crap happening every year, this con was fun. It did seem smaller, I did make it to 1 panel I wanted, and the dealers room seemed better than last year. I did also get to meet some people from here. I was the one who had the room party in 425 at the garden inn across the street. It was really fun and the random gulls from here actually were all really cool people who I would party with normally.

Just curious, since I might be considering ditching A-kon for San Japan next year as everyone suggests, how does San Japan compare? I'm talking specifics. San Japan is half the size, but 10k people is nothing to downplay. SJ usually has better programming. The venue is on the river walk so there are a ton more options for food and stuff. sidenote: i'm not sure how many cons do this but they actually have it where you get to vote on panels you want to see. while that might not be great in the case of flavor of the month related panels being more likely to get votes, it does keep totally uninteresting/disorganized panels out of the running.

How was my akon?

Overall it was pretty good. It was spectacular, and it doesn't have the same sense of wonder and hatred that cons past have given, but it was still fun.

I got in late on Friday, I had to get out of work and hit Costco before leaving town. It was a surreal experience making the drive alone. All my other friends took the day off work, but I'm still on my 90 days at the firm so I don't get any pto. Anyway, I finally arive around 10p, and get all my shit into the room. What was great is that we actually planned this time. The only rule was no tumors. We got two rooms early across the street and split the cost between six people. Or so we thought. Bigbossu's car broke down out of Austin so we were then but s group of 5. That night we then proceeded to drink the whole case of beer I got from Costco, hut up the bar, and still have room to dig in deep to the Jim we had. Suddenly it was 6 am and everyone was asleep.

When I woke up it was one of the rare times I've had a hang over, but a few shots of the hair of the dog and a shower cleared that right up and into CIA. THE HUNT FOR BANE BEGAIN. I spent most of my sober state on Saturday hunting down a bane. Hours and hours of running into people I know and making new friends and chain smoking cigarettes and all I find is that one bane. It was worth it. That was it for my master plan. At some point my friend bought all of the maid deck building game and another brought mahjong, so the end of my sober Saturday state was spent having a bunch of creepy Chinese kids coming up to the table in shock and cumming in their pants because someone was playing mahjong.

And then the drinking started. First in the seagulls room on the 14th floor. Then back to the bar. Then in my room. Then with all you wonderful seagulls. There was lots of roaming and smoke breaks at at some point it ended up being 4 am and I'm crashed near the pond listening to weeaboos while my friend is running around blackout drunk...

My iPad just deleted my entire second post.

Anyway. We didn't get arrested but we almost did.

I had a good time but the venue itself is just so bad. The entire flow was off. And The convention itself needs some better quality content beyond "What Latina Hitalia couple is your OTP" kind of shit. It's like, you'd think after doing it for so long they would be better at it.

This was the convention I learned my anger and rage is gone. I'm just disappointed in all of it, not to say I didn't have a good time. I'd just rather be in the center of down town near the interesting dives and venues and see what Dallas is really like. I don't need to know what the freeway and a Denny's looks like. And that's why I love San Japan. I hate it because it's in my home town, but they do things so damn well, and there's so much shit near it.

I met a bunch of rad people, but I think we just need to go to dragon con.

>Size of con
San Japan had 14,686 attendees last year according to their wikipedia entry. Last year A-Kon was a little over 26K. San Japan is not small, by any stretch of the imagination, and the attendance has been steadily rising in its 8 years of existing. To put in perspective how quickly it grew, A-Kon took 18 years to get that big.

>Venue
Unlike A-Kon, San Japan is in a legit convention center (the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center), contracted through 2018. The convention center has plenty of room for them to grow into, and is conveniently loctated. There are half a dozen or more large hotels within easy walking distance (the Grand Hyatt, the host hotel, is quite literally all of 50ft from the convention center), the center is literally smack dab in the middle of San Antonio's downtown. It's on the Riverwalk, meaning there are a range of restaurants super close by, including a mall food court and a Denny's for the finanically disadvantaged, and a fancy Brazilian steakhouse for those with cash to blow.

>etc
The main difference I find between San Japan and A-Kon is the upper level staff's attitude toward their attendees. A-Kon has become notorious for how out of touch they are with fans. San Japan tries their very hardest to give people what they want, and actually implements changes when people have a legit complaint.

San Japan gets fairly good guests, and has a little bit of variety to who they invite as opposed to A-Kon.

San Japan has a lot of good and varied programming. And their cosplay show is arguably the best in the state.

Overall, I would really recommend giving it a try. I have always really, really enjoyed it. Like any con though, there are a fair amount of detractors who say "BLAH THIS CON IS SHIT ALL CONS ARE SHIT," and they will get more vocal as SJ gets closer and we have a thread, but don't let them deter you. Go, and form your own opinion! I think you'll find that it was a solid decision.

BTW i know there are tons of questins compairing a kon to a fest, but as a guy who went to a couple of a kons and a couple of a fests, how would san japan feel? I sortof like a kon and a fest, but this year i'll be going to dragon-con with friends so a fest is out of my schedule. I was thinking about going to san japan to make up for a fest being out of the loop for dfw cons. Only thing that sucks is I really don't like going to cons alone and I doubt my friends will want to drive all the way down to san antonio for an anime con( they prefer western stuff).

Not really. A-fest in the past 2 years has done multiple rounds of picking the panels they want. Usually they pick exactly what they want and leave the rest up for voting, but even so almost 75% or more of what's submitted gets in. I disagree that there are more creative and well thought panels. Last year there was a proliferation of Q&A (now banned, yes), and multiple panels with the exact same fandom and concept (6+ Hetalia panels anyone?). Panels with 10+ votes won't get in, and panels with 2 votes will.

It is my personal experience that the votes don't matter at all and are just a facade. Maybe they do, maybe they really don't, but for me, the votes never made a difference for my panels getting accepted.

I think the difference is that A-fest has way less industry / con guest panels. A-kon attracts people who go around to cons putting on panels. A-fest is much more local and has a greater ratio of fan panels. A-fest gets a lot of the same fan panels from A-kon, and I'm sure a lot of what A-fest accepts was submitted to A-kon, but maybe just didn't make it in. This year was a total crapshoot for Akon, but it's much, much harder to get a panel in there even if for the simple reason that, in a normal year, they have less fan programming spots (because the guests have more spots / there are more guests to fill spots for).

That said, A-fest still does have some good programming. I don't mean to shit on it. Just keep in mind that it's much more of a local or Texas-only cast of presenters than A-kon which might get people from across the states coming in for the con. You really can't compare a top 5 con with a mid-size local. But this is all my personal experience and opinions. Just something to consider!

You've clearly done your research, kudos to you. I do have to interject and say that regarding the "it took 18 years for A-kon to gain those numbers" comment... the entire anime scene was different back then. It was this tiny little subculture. No live streams. No anime on TV (unless you were up at 6 am and got lucky). No walking into a bookstore and buying translated manga. San Japan started when anime/Japanese pop culture were already big, so of course the numbers would have increased much more readily.

Specifically, wearing glasses, suit jacket, tie, panties, fishnets, garter belt and heels, holding a folded wheelchair on his shoulder at the top of the 2nd floor escalator. Maybe a guy hanging on to his teddy bear in the shot.

Not so much that I wanted "proof" as much as I wasn't aware of it and know better than to look to tumblr for details on stuff like this. Oh sorry, I misunderstood then. I'm sure there was probably one or two rude volunteers, but that's how it is with every large con. Much of the cruelty was probably just ignorance, which obviously doesn't make the situation any better but yeah. I have no idea how A-Kon hasn't got in trouble for this after 26 years. I want to say it's flat out illegal to not have this basic training/accomodations, but I'll need to double check that. I think it mostly has to do with lack of education on the subject. I believe most volunteers would be more than happy to accommodate, but they just don't have the knowledge on what to do.

>flat out illegal

You have no idea what you are talking about. If you don't have to have training specifically about handling the disabled in a work environment why would you be lawfully required to do it as a volunteer?

iirc they had tickets and they were $30-40. It was posted a while before the con started so I can't be certain the price but they did cost.

ADA is a thing. A legal thing.

You are the one exaggerating. They got one ask that I saw even use that language. Also consider the fact I heard a volunteer telling someone they weren't disabled since they weren't in a wheel chair? I would complete believe a few volunteers were being awful shits This is why you don't run your con on the backs of 18 year old boys in it for free tickets.

>Private clubs are not covered, except to the extent that the facilities of the private club are made available to customers or patrons of a place of public accommodation.

Conventions are private clubs since they sell -memberships- and not -tickets-. Legitimate ADA complaints would be directed at the Anatole and not the convention.

That isn't the way it works and you think ADA just means ramps don't you dumb ass. I guess all the other big cons around the country and world just do all that disability shit for the funnies right?

Honestly that girl deserved more than most creative, I saw her shit up close and it was really well done. Probably didnt place because it was an 'original' take on HQ.

As for titnesque, I wouldnt say they are fit for judging craftsmanship, since they are perfomance based and they were probably only invited to fill space. They were very unqualified in my opinion to judge any contest and idk if you saw that Matsuri "skit" but it was honestly a glorified walk-on with nothing overly impressive about it, and the costumes themselves weren't anything special.

I ran into one of their members while they were drunk, and I think you're confusing the HQ with another contestant, who was wrongfully disqualified for being "professionally" trained even though there are no rules against that anyways.

What cons have disabilities services besides dragon con? I can't think of any. I know no one in Texas does.

Why are you so hung up on this?

>> No.8402105

Yeah, only one ask used those specific words, but there was more than one ask that made it sound like volunteers were generally purposely rude to disabled attendees when it's more likely they just need to be better trained to work with them.

>>8401817
LBR, more cons should have disabilities services. With the big crowds and long lines, it's already hard enough for disabled people at cons. Being disabled shouldn't exclude someone from being able to enjoy a convention and it's the con staff's job to help make it easier for them.
