What sparked the spike in popularity with western audience? I remember discussions of it while the anime was airing, but nothing like immediate rush to cosplay it. I was very surprised by the number of cosplayers for it at cons this year. Not like they were everywhere, but I'd expected maybe 1-2 per con, not like 4-5 sets/couples.

Also I tried watching it for a bit, and the very first imouto panty shot was just.. too much. I mean she's like 11.

The MC in NGNL was a total asshole. That and the lolicon are mainly what turned me off from it. I didn't like SAO either, but least Kirito was a decently nice guy.

I'd say it depends on your fat distribution.
I thought I'd be aight because I'd seen people draw her chubby and she looked cute, but a lot of my weight is round my middle and thighs so I looked like shit. Got a lot of compliments on the day, but it was probably because I was the first Jibril they'd seen and it was a small local con. If you're chubby but don't have much of a stomach and are willing to put more work in than I did to make it look more flattering, go for it
