Biggest Anime con on the East Coast (biggest con in general on the East Coast is NYCC). Usually around 35k attendees. I've been going there for years since I usually only go to two or three cons a year and I always try to never miss it. Sometimes it has great guests, sometimes it has guests I never really had an interest in. I mostly go just to meet new people and for the Metal Gear cosplayers since they've been so nice to me over the years.

I honestly think that changes per person since it all comes down to your experience of the con. Mostly since it's out of my state it already gives me a thrill. Usually there's always something for you to do. I've really enjoyed going to the Voice Actors After Dark panel. I think it's on Saturday nights and the voice actor guests basically do parodies/talk out of character in their character voices.

I know this isn't really the con in general but there's a TON of food around within walking distance. Pretty much the whole inner harbor area turns into a con-town so you'll always run into someone from the con as long as you don't go too deep into Baltimore.

Rave/Dance w/e is alright. It's what you'd expect. They're not really my thing but I still always check it out at least once.

Panels are usually varied. As a JoJo fan I also try to catch the posing panel each year.

The one thing that kind of sucks about it is how the lines for thursday prereg have been handled poorly the past 2-3 years or so. Last years was especially bad since the line never really died out and they cut a load of people off.

>> No.8362816

>>8362812
And to add onto it. For the past couple of years or so people have been filling the outside fountains full of soap suds. It pisses some people off but I think it's funny to see.

The dealers room and game room are big. Like extremely big.

So glad I started early this year and probably won't kill myself out of stress a week beforehand.

Question: Is there any good way to gauge interest for a meetup of probably very few people? It'd be awesome to organize a photoshoot or meetup but I can't imagine there being any more than 4-6 cosplayers all weekend. I'd want to organize or participate in one for pic related. How would one go about it?

>> No.8362850

>>8362833
A few places. Usually the forums for Otakon would work, but they're mostly dead. People still check them so you might luck out. Cosplay (the website, I'm sure if I post the link it'd count as spam) also works. They've been kind of dicks to me lately for no reason though and deleted my meetup threads, so I don't really use the site too much anymore. Another place would be the Otakon Facebook page. Loads of people usually post to the pages about groups, meetups, etc.

>> No.8362865

Last year was my first time going and I found it ridiculously hard to get into some panels. I would arrive an hour early to line up and still have people let us know that we might not make it in. Am I doing something wrong? Should I be arriving hours ahead if it's a panel I really really want to go to?

>>8362812
>Last years was especially bad since the line never really died out and they cut a load of people off.

It was so so so bad. I think I waited in line for 3+ hours and still didn't get my badge in the end. It also sucks that you have to pick up your own badge yourself (so one friend can't just get it for the group). They also told random parts of the line that they were closing up the registration but didn't actually have enough staff/volunteers to go up and down the line to inform everyone so people were doubting the random people who were spreading this info in the line and everyone stayed until they literally closed the doors and rejected anyone from going in.

I also lived a short bus ride away so that night we were there pretty late, the bus came really late and also decided to not stop at the stop it was suppose to but at some random spot across the street instead. Being unfamiliar with the area I was really confused at what was going on and didn't want to hop on the wrong bus so late at night. Luckily some dude at the same bus stop told us that it was the right bus but has no idea why it didn't come to our stop so all of us had to run across the street fearing it would leave after waiting so long.

That really sucks. I knew something was wrong when I saw that it didn't really die out around 7 or so like it usually did the years before. Me and my friends actually made a ton of huge cuts in the line to get inside the building, though it was only 3 of us doing it.

I'm glad I decided to pony up the extra cash to get it mailed this year, assuming nothing goes horribly wrong with that. I'm also happy they decided to get some badges mailed out in light of last years event.

Lol yup. I didn't believe anyone until I heard it myself. I didn't wait in line for 4+ hours just to walk out based on something a random congoer said. It got to the point where people who were rejected far ahead of me walked back to our part of the line and said things like "Are you people really this fucking stupid? Get out of line."

Am I doing something wrong? Should I be arriving hours ahead if it's a panel I really really want to go to?

yes. this is completely normal for otakon. the BCC cannot handle the amount of people that attend the con in general, and neither can otakon meet the needs of amount of people showing up for panels and events. otakon needed to have moved to a larger venue at least half a decade ago but the organizers stuck their heads in the sand about the overcrowding issue until being forced to move. the organizers have been in total denial about the massive problems with the con for a long time and have wanted to just skate by for as long as they could without making any hard changes. for years they absolutely refused to even consider mailing out badges, acting like the mere notion that registration was a problem was absurd. it took last year's absolute clusterfuck for them to finally realize they have no choice but to rethink registration and badge delivery.

otakon is just way too big of a convention for the people running it. their entirely volunteer and fan-run model has been showing its faults for years as the attendance has swarmed and tested every weakness in the model. the organizers don't seem to care. they'll continue sticking their fingers in their ears until they're absolutely forced to make any change. it makes me seriously question the future of the convention. i don't have any doubt it will always draw a crowd, but i seriously question the organizers' ability to keep form losing total control of the event. they have an amazing opportunity on their hands to make a great convention and bring in a lot of money for cool stuff, but they can't keep pretending large portions of the convention can just continue to run on auto-pilot without any change

>> No.8364274

>>8364225
the BCC is one of the abosolute hugest problems with otakon. it's completely incapable of meeting otakon's needs and has been for at least half a decade. not only is there nowhere near enough space, but the convention center is not fit at all for the technical needs of large conventions in a time where just having a room with power outlets and lighting doesn't cut it. the BCC is not at all fit to provide the kind of network, internet, and cell access that is increasingly crucial to many aspects of a convention like otakon. there isn't even any sort of PA or communication system from relaying messages around the convention center. at a convention that draws something like 35k people? that is A Problem

>> No.8364317

>>8364255
>>8364274

>>8364225 Here. I've noticed that it really started to become a problem just for the past three years. It's probably been a bit of a problem before that, but I've been going since 08 and never really ran into problems like this until 2012, maybe 2011.

Yeah getting a bigger convention center is going to be great and I commend them for that + finally getting mailed badges out there after all these years (getting mine mailed this year, hoping that they won't fuck that up too). It's just going to feel weird that it's not going to be at its iconic location for awhile (assuming they return after renovations).

At least it's not NYCC though, the practices are way worse imo.

A lot of randoms told us nicely but most of us just didn't want to believe it after waiting for so long. I was at least expecting to get some sort of priority for getting our badges in the morning so we were waiting for something to happen I guess.

>>8364255
That's really unfortunate to hear. It was my first time to the con and after hearing how it was one of the biggest cons on the east coast I was expecting a lot in terms of content and organization.

Good on them for mailing out badges this year but I won't be heading back until after the move to DC and probably not the first year either so that they can work out the kinks.

>> No.8364489

>>8364225
It would feel odd at first. But once you figure out downtown DC it's very beneficial. Metro has a station right at the convention center which opens up accessibility for non-con things. Chinatown is right around the corner as well. The convention center itself has roomy hallways and a giant bottom floor for dealer's/AA (what I pictured is only a small portion!) the hotel connected to it that has large amounts of meeting rooms. What I do noticed from my walking around is a possibility of limited places for copay gatherings so that could be the biggest downside of the move.

I read the policy for Awesomecon now. Like most cons it seems confusing. They say it can't be realistic/confused for a real weapon, but they also say an orange tip is fine.

The problem with cosplaying Solid Snake is that no one can see the orange tip when it's in the holster. I've never really gotten bothered by it before, but I did have to go to a prop check or two just to get a sticker.

I went last year and couldn't get Wednesday night off and due to last minute issues wasn't able to leave until late afternoon Thursday. I completely missed everything Thursday and reached my hotel around 2 am

I heard the lines were absolutely insane though and everyone was just standing around baking in the sun. I kept checking here to see what was going on and I guess the staff were using computers that were hooked up over open wifi? and it completely slowed everything to a crawl.
Then Friday there was just such a large crowd that everyone was still waiting hours to get into the building to get their badge. I came early afternoon and still had to wait about an hour or so.

Excited to get my badge this year in the mail and have everything squared away. Requested the night off before the convention so I can sleep through the night and hit the road at 8.

Oh my gosh, taking a Greyhound bus was one of the worst travel experiences of my life. I had to take a route that had two buses with a layover, and my first bus arrived some two hours late to our destination, causing me to miss my second bus completely. I tried talking to Greyhound employees at the NY station, but they were almost completely unhelpful, saying that I was just going to have to wait for the next bus to Baltimore with an open seat, which was the next morning at 6 am. Also, they wouldn't reimburse me for the second bus trip that I missed due to the first bus being late. It was my first time in NYC, around 10 pm, I was completely alone, with nobody to stay with for the night and no money to pay for an expensive train ticket to get me to Baltimore before morning. Plus, I had only just turned 18 and had some older men getting a little too friendly, acting "concerned" and offering me a place to stay, so I called my parents sobbing and having a panic attack, and my mother was nice enough to put money in my bank account so I could take an Amtrak train to Baltimore (though I paid her back later, naturally). I got to my hotel around 1:30 am, exhausted, and then that situation turned out to be a shitshow, too, but that's another story for another day.

tl;dr: Never take a Greyhound bus, especially if it involves taking two buses to get to your destination.

The problem with that Giorno is that it looks nothing like any of Araki's other designs. Obviously it's just fanart but "girl in pleated miniskirt and thigh highs" is so far away what Araki would put a main character in. It's way too plain and looks half-assed and like a "I want to look slutty for no reason" cosplay. The skirt would at least have an interesting feature or design.

Cosplay that if you want, of course, it just makes me salty that of all the rule 63 Giorno designs there are, you picked a really stupidly top-heavy/lazy design.

In some ways I think they just barely do it. Some volunteers are amazing, and I've seen them there year after year. Other volunteers you can tell are frazzled and overwhelmed. The organization factor is slightly off as that convention becomes overcrowded. For example, last year MANY of the panels were late to get people seated and did not run the panel late, to the point where you'd wait in line 2+ hours for a 30 minute panel.

I don't think they do a bad job, it is a surprisingly well run con overall for its size. It's definitely got its faults and weak areas, though.

Hotel, no. Tickets, yes.

Your best bet for a hotel at this point would be searching around for people with extra space in their rooms. As for the badges, I believe the current price is $95 (assuming you haven't registered for Otakon before) but it'll be $100 if you're buying at the door.

It was a "linecon" last year due to the preregister computer disaster, but this year sounds much more promising as the first 10,000 people had the option to get their badges mailed to them instead of waiting in line. Should mean less people in line this year.

1. Too many series with generic looking male protags because I'm trash.
2. Leaning on the skinny side, currently working out to turn that to muscle.
3. No skill whatsoever, although I do have the sewing machine for fabric cosplays.
4. A lot.

I'm leaning more towards a sellout cosplay like Free! or crossplay of Love Live! Nozomi only because it's easier to meet people that way. All the cosplays I really want to do (Rance, Lukas from Monmusu Quest, Tactician from FE Awakening) are either too vague to get attention or too overdone. Yeah I know I seem picky but I dunno man, there's a lot less to pick from when the 2d chicks get guaranteed unique designs.

If you have some sewing machine that might be your saving grace to actually get a cosplay done in time. I don't know if you could actually get a cosplay commissioned by otakon. You do have a good body type for about %70 of male cosplays, so that helps out alot.

Love Live would be interesting if you pull it off right, Free! you would get a decent amount of attention and if you were feeling ballsy or drunk you could play in the contaminated fountain at the harbor. Not too familiar with Monmusa Quest but I look it up and they do look generic but what does Anon know. Fire Emblem could be really good, I don't really remember seeing a lot of them last year and you could probably do that easily.Honestly man, I would just take a day to really think about all my options and try to remember all the games and shows I watched and think which one is the most viable.

Oh yea, you are right about the whole 2D thing, nobody really cares about male designs

I'm so close to finished on my two cosplays but my god do I need to motivation to just get up and do it. I know from experience "oh I have a whole month, I'll do it tomorrow" will kick me in the ass later.

Meanwhile, I am "helping" with my bf's cosplay and it's frustrating the shit out of me. He's had months and months to buy the materials, and I offered to help with the sewing parts. I remind him every single time I see him and he says "oh, shit, yeah I'll do it as soon as I get home". Never does. I even do all the scouting on eBay and find all the perfect pieces to use and alter, and he never buys them so they disappear. I'm only really set on getting this done because it would look great alongside mine.
