I've always loved vk. If I were young again I would really like to do it at cons, but it essentially requires you to be really cut, young, and somewhat-naturally attractive.

I've found the best way to deal with a lack of a scene is to be initiative. Like, i've never not done something because there was no scene, but i've found that people will come out of the woods if someone sparks the flame.

This may seem like an odd request, but can anyone give me advice as to what to tell my stylist the next time I go to a salon if I want to style my hair vk-ish?

I have thick, curly, slight past shoulder length hair that I straighten often but have never actually styled. Given my lack of termniology (average guy here) with hair, what should I tell the stylist if I plan on doing something often like pic related?

You're over thinking it. Just take a picture of what you want to a competent stylist and explain a little of what you're looking for. Most of them should be able to give you details of how to achieve what you want as well.

Lolita here, just wondering what makes VK what it is? I've seen it for years, and even though I could look at something and probably confirm that it's Visual Kei, why is that? Any sources I've found online contradict one another, is it just the hair, kinda punk and non-matchy?

Also, is oshare-kei still a separate thing?

Oshare-kei is a sub-genre of Visual-kei.

The best advice I could give to you as far as being able to identify upon sight is to listen to simply listen to the music. Eventually you'll be able to say "Oh, that's visual-kei" rather than "Oh, that's goth/emo/scene/lolita/hipster/etc.)

Off the top of my head I would say check out SuG, D=Out, Exist Trace, LM.C, -Oz-, Versailles, Vistlip, Clearveil to name a few. there are literally so many bands though that i'm sure you'll get a feel quickly enough.

It's kind of hard to pinpoint a specific sound and appearance because there's a decent variety in VK but I usually associate it with the stage presence the musicians have. The clothing, makeup, hairstyles, body language...

Think '80's glam rock (Motely Crue or New York Dolls...hell, even Jem and the Holograms) but kicked up a notch in the makeup and clothing department.

To be honest, I feel like visual kei is one of the only styles I can pull of because I'm NOT young and cute. I'm tall and I have a long, serious-looking face that doesn't translate well into styles like lolita and mori, but works well for visual kei. Also, visual kei is super forgiving about how your face looks because you can hide so much with a visual kei haircut and heavy makeup. Pic related because it's me, who looks awful in other j-fashions, making visual kei work.

Ah same... I'm fairly short but I look like a lovechild of Saoirse Ronan and a horse (you could probably guess who I am in the selfpost thread from this description alone, unfortunately). Jfashion is hell sometimes, in the sense that if you don't look cute and young, you can either be an edgy vampire goth princess or look terrible

Anyone can look cute if they do visual kei right. Take Ryuki from Paradies for example in the video above. If you look at his face alone before he starts putting on his makeup and stuff, he looks like your average guy. It really comes down to skin/body care as well working on your style with hair/clothing/makeup.

Remember, be a Ryuki, don't go uneducated and be like pic related.

When I was in Japan a couple of months ago, I was actually surprised by how "alive" visual kei was (at least in Osaka and Kanazawa).
The VK scene is so quiet here in the U.S....at least here in Colorado.

This is sort of a tricky one. Does anyone have any suggestions and approaches for VK style that could easily be worn in public? I (male) would like to wear a "toned down" style when i'm not with friends or at cons, but i'm not quite sure on how I can achieve a medium of vk and having a crowd of normies constantly staring.

It does have something to do with how they perform too - a lot of the theatrical during the live shows and promo videos. Can't say too much about the musical structure though (J rock's weird). I noticed that a lot of bands use orchestrated music in addition to their guitars and drums.

Me too, especially since westerners that get into VK usually seem to be the same grade as the wannabe lolitas that slap on a hot topic dress and fishnets and call it a day.
Think how glorious it would be if for every decent lolita/brolita there was a decent VKer that actually knew how to use make up and wore clothes that looked substantial.

If it was more popular, it probably would be like that. If there was an actually community large enough to feel like a community, then there would be more accessible advice and criticism. People wearing vk fashion are so few and far between that we're just sort of floating out there on our own, trying to figure it all out by trial and error. I've been into vk fashion for around 10 years now and I feel like the livejournal days were really the peak of visual kei fashion having a community, but these days? Nothing.

I really envy the lolita community, in that regard.

So of the people posting in this thread, does anyone else here ever wear vk fashion? If not every day, even at cons or something? Because there are some good vk threads here from time to time, but I can never tell how many people are actually wearers themselves vs just admirers.

Personally I don't know of any resources but you are gonna wanna look into what are the popular vkei brands. Some vkei brands' clothing are on some secondhand japanese sites like closetchild, which ships to the U.S., you'll just need to use the egl guide to help you go through the buying process. Anyways there's cdjapan like the other anon mentioned and Tokyo Rebel is a store in NYC which also sells stuff online that stocks some suitable clothing.

ClosetChild is a really good source. The vkei/punk stuff sells really slowly too so you have a better chance of saving up for an item. Some brands/items still go quickly but nothing like the lolita side. You can also search brands on mbok and Y!Japan auctions. h.Naoto, Algonquins, Ozz On, Sex Pot Revenge, Ghost of Harlem, Banana Fish, Deorart, Excentrique, etc. ClosetChild is probably gonna be the easiest and they have pretty good selection.
Dropping down in quality you can also search for visual kei on eBay. No vouching for that, though.

Mind you, I live in a hill-billy county were everyone has the education of a peanut and is very conservative, so needless to say most are not friendly when they see me. No to mention no one else anywhere near hear is into visual-kei. It doesn't bother me too much though, given I visit a city 2 hours away quite often and no one there seems to mind at all.

The pamphlets are 40 bucks. the picture sets are around 10 i think. the girl's tshirts run small.
