So after wearing lolita in a mild European climate for a bit, I've moved back to my hometown in the American south where the average summer temps are often above 95°F/35°C with 90% humidity.
Can we have a thread of cute but comfortable coords for the coming summer heat in the northern hemisphere?
Do any experienced hot and humid climate lolitas have advice to share?

>> No.8290899

Take it old school: cutsews and skirts, my friend. Comfortable in gross weather, easy to launder, keeps the extra stress and wear of sweating like a pig off your best pieces.

This thread actually addresses a question I had. I’ll be wearing lolita one day at Otakon (in Baltimore, in late July). Would it be at all acceptable to wear a shawl or short-sleeved bolero in lieu of a blouse? It’s going to be hot as hell and I don’t want to sweat like a stuck pig, but I don’t want to get side-eyed for not wearing a blouse, either.

A peignoir without blouse is accepted so I would think a bolero or even a chiffon cardigan is also acceptable
Speaking of peignoirs, whats cgl's opinion on them?

I'm from Florida and I do this a lot, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I think as long as your shoulders/cleavage is covered its not a big deal.

Id probably opt for the bolero imo, it will make having no blouse less noticeable.

>>8290966
Bolero instead of a blouse is totally acceptable, as long as you're not flashing your armpits or bra straps to the world. Tons of girls I know opt for boleros instead of blouses even when it's not hot out.

Thank you for all the help! This is a relief to hear. Last year we had a cosplay group and we were stupid enough to attend in suits. Misery. Lightweight fabrics from here on out.

Do you have any good example pics of hot weather coords done right?

I mean, it follows all the rules of lolita. Maybe it could be called retro lolita, but I definitely see it as lolita.

The rules being covered shoulders and petticoat or what else do you count?

>> No.8291108

She has on a petticoat. The top of the jsk is flattering and modest without a blouse. She has some type of leg covering. Seems like it all checks out to me.

I think different shoes and ankle socks instead of plain white tights would make this read more as Lolita.
Also maybe a cute hat with a red ribbon.

I think she should remove the belt too. And get a different blouse.

Different anon here. When you compare that pic to this pic, that girl has a general "cute" feeling going on, and this pic has a very definite retro stylization going on.

I think that's good enough for that one to be called lolita, or retro lolita. I get that we're not into calling anything with a poofy skirt lolita, but I think that pic looks pretty close to lolita rather than retro.

Perhaps not a popular opinion but I think if you pay attention to the rest of the styling etc, classic/oldschool babydoll jsks look nice without a blouse or even a bolero. I think they look really cute with a parasol too.

>> No.8291157

>>8290974
I don't really like them since it looks weird with the lolita silhouette. It's also one of those trend hopper things. Maybe if they were shorten to just reach the hem of the skirt, it wouldn't look so awkward - sort of like a manteau/mantua gown.

I agree with this. And parasols are so great for staying cool in the summer.

Yeah, I think peignoirs look best when they're altered to be the same length as the dress. They usually just look like overdresses when they hit the end of the dress.

I think that >>8291091 looks a bit more like a lolita piece being worn in a retro way, rather than retro lolita. To me, retro lolita still has that lolita feel, usually with shoes/socks or accessories. It needs that cute fantastical whimsey that lolita has in general and I think that's what separates a lot of lolita-esque coords using too many normalfag elements from being truly lolita. It's something I hadn't been able to put my finger on, but I think I understand now why some coords just look a bit off.

I remember wearing similar tights and feeling really hot in spite of them being sheers.

Yes it is! It looks like she's wearing it with a sleeveless blouse with an oversized collar. Not sure about the source of it, but I really like it.

While lightweight, most chiffon blouses and peignoirs are made of polyester. A light blouse of cotton voile would be cooler.

Those sheer tights are definitely still super-hot in the summer. The mesh is close-knit enough to trap in heat. You've got to look for open-weave tights, kind of like fishnets (but not fishnet pattern for Lolita obviously) if you want to have air on your legs/want good tights for summer. This is a lesson I learned the hard way. Pic related, "open weave" tights.

And yeah, I totally love that wide-collar blouse she's wearing! It's got a nice retro/sailor feel, to me anyways.

if it works with the cut of the jsk, I think this is a really cute idea and it looks lovely.
