I'm looking to make a cage bustle and I have an understanding of making the form of it, however I really admired the structure of this one and wondered if anyone would have an idea of what material would have been used to make this thick of a base? We're planning on spoonflowering it for next month and put off ordering for so long because we are idiots who thought we could find something close enough in stores. I think it'd look better with a little adjustment to the intersections of the diagonals. Instead of having one line break, make it so they're laid on top of each other like in pic related. I would also make all diagonals face the same direction.

If you did those adjustments, it'd look like there are small dark blue squares where the two lines of dark blue diagonals intersect and the places where the purple/brown diagonals intersect would look like a square with different purple/brown stripes.

I'm sorry if what I've said isn't very clear!

>> No.8282178

>>8282156
No this is super helpful and exactly the problem I was having with it, put into words! Thank you so much. It's not exactly how it looks in the original design (if you look closely, I'm pretty sure they are facing different directions...) but maybe it's worth sacrificing 100% accuracy if it looks better. These were only in the game, so it's likely the character designers didn't even put that much thought into the direction of the plaid details... haha.

I'd still like some advice on the issue of printing on spoonflower without a test print, specifically if it is ever a good idea.

Like >>8281858 said, eat an early breakfast that's high in protein (eggs are good, dairy products might make you bloat but yogurt is okay, avoid breads but some are okay), drink water throughout the day (your body might start storing water if it feels dehydrated, which will give you a bloaty feeling), and do a very light snack for lunch if you're feeling faint.

Don't skip meals for an entire day; you'll be cranky and ill-tempered and tired come the afternoon.

I have a really general question. What brand makes the best lolita blouses for their price? I know it depends on fabric quality, but for example- a blouse from Infanta vs. blouse from Chess Story? I know Bodyline is inexpensive, but a lot of their blouses tend to look very boxy (I know the photos are bad on their site, but sometimes stock images is all I can go by.)

tl;dr - Is there any brand or style that is well known for good blouses, but preferably under $75 a blouse?

Repost from previous thread:
What's the best way to pattern this hood? The two peaks/cat ear things are really throwing me off, since it's like a regular hood that got stuck halfway through splitting in two or something.

Is there a way to adapt a normal hood pattern to have two peaks instead of one in the back? I'm pretty wary of drafting an entirely new pattern since all I can think of would leave a seam going down the front centre, right under the face hole.

One time when I tried to print something on Spoonflower, I had the original image set to a higher DPI (150) to preserve quality but forgot to change the default DPI setting on Spoonflower after uploading the image (which is like 96 or something). It looked fine in the preview image, but the image ended up being bigger than anticipated on the received product and it was 100% my oversight.

As for colors, I would advice staying away from the absolute cheapest option since the color print is a layer on top of the fabric that...flaked off in parts when I tried a fat quarter. It was also a few years ago, so it's possible Spoonflower has improved it since. The colors didn't look as sharp or contrasted as on my monitor (and my monitor is not set to some painful contrast level). I also recommend downloading Spoonflower's own color guide (http://www.spoonflower.com/colorguide)) and using the exact colors their machines can do to lessen the chances of colors coming out not as expected. Eyedropper tool on paint or Photoshop will work for this.

Some sort of medium-weight to bottomweight fabric like twill or poplin with a polyester/cotton mix will work. Just be careful not to get too heavy of a fabric or it may become difficult/too thick to work with where a lot of details come together. 100% cotton fabrics will wrinkle easily from even light wear while 100% polyester fabrics will have a hard time holding pleats unless you treat the fabric or sew it down.

Get a wig head. It's $1-$5 and you'll reuse it for just about every wig. If you can, get the man head model since it'll be closer in size to your own head.

You'll need a wide-tooth comb and a pair of thinning shears (scissors) at minimum. You can make-do with regular scissors but it takes much longer and far more difficult to get a natural look. These items shouldn't be that expensive either.

Google for basic tutorials.

If you're just styling bangs, you don't actually need a wig head since you can wear it yourself (just be sure all your real hair is properly secured under a wigcap so you don't accidentally cut that as well). Like >>8286593 said, it's not so scary. Go slow, do it in sections, and cut away a little bit at a time. If you've been wanting to get into resin casting anyways, just buy the materials yourself. Just beware - it's terribly expensive, so unless you're planning on doing a good deal, it's probably not worth it, and you can find cheaper substitutes.

Oh, and try not to buy too much silicone if you're gonna do it. That stuff doesn't have a terrribly long shelf life.

What I would for the sleeves is get a piece of white ribbon and connect from the top of the sleeve to the shoulder. or you can get some clear wire, like the ones they use for fishing rods.

For the cat, get some thick fabric, measure it out to roughly your size and cut it out like pic related, sew together.

Leave some allowance and with a knife, large needle, exacto knife cut little holes and thread some black yarn to get that "rough stich" look.

Sorry for crappy pic, it's late
Good luck

I'm planning a Lapis Lazuli cosplay.

She has so much exposed blue skin that I don't think I can reasonably do it with makeup. I also get back acne, and can't guarantee my back will look smooth on the day of the con. So, a bodysuit seems smartest.

So I'd love some advice about this. How do you match a bodysuit with your face makeup? How do you seamlessly join the two? Where do you buy the kind of bodysuit suitable for this?

And what do I do about the fact that this character has bare feet?

I'm not sure about the rest of the cat, but the sleeves. Along with interfacing, you could have a circle of thick foam about halfway up the sleeve, that's tight enough around your arm to stop it from slipping down. It'd be like having the sleeve as a full solid piece conformed to your arm, but without being so hot and constricting. I can't explain it too well so hopefully this crude diagram makes sense

You can buy coloured chef's jackets, it will be easier than dying it that bold red. But the double breasting on a chef's jacket is so narrow compared to the character. Also the textile weight is way heavier than a typical chef jacket will be. I'm not saying go for the wool (you will die of heat) but the military weight stuff should have more structure imo. Finding the right base jacket will take some digging, probably. You can mod a pattern from the chef jacket but at that point you might find a better pattern.

Pumpkinetics on Tumblr made armsocks and tights (with articulated toes) and glued nails onto them. The armsocks cover a torso from ribs-to-neck, so she only painted her midriff and face+neck. The slightly mismatched paint is more obvious in a bathroom selfie she took, but it seems she either did a better paint job or colour-fixed her skin in her shoot photos.

There are Homestuck cosplay tutorials about making armsocks from tights; you should search for those.

To match your paint to your tights, you need to get a tights colour first and then mix your paint to match that.
>dye two pairs of white tights to the ideal colour
>or buy from welovecolors.com to be guaranteed two matching tights

I'm guessing she either fashion taped/glued her top to the edges of her armsocks to keep them from slipping, or kept adjusting them throughout the day.

>>8290469
Depends on the cut of the blazer and how form-fitting it is, but I would say yes, there are major differences. The buttons are on the opposite side on a women's jacket and constructed with room for breasts and a smaller waist. You may find the arms narrow as well. You can't really just "straighten out" the shirt to fix it; it'd require doing some tucking and sewing to get rid of the extra fabric around the breasts and adding width to the waist.
TL;DR: Get a men's blazer as a base or find a women's blazer that is as roomy and unflattering as a men's

Hello!
My niece is hoping to do her first cosplay this summer and we could use a bit of help. She wants to be Sakura Kinomoto of Cardcaptor Sakura, but we are at a loss when it comes to the wig. There were a few on eBay, but with so many sellers using the same picture, I am not sure which ones are legitimate. I have also checked out Arda, but I haven't styled a wig before, so I don't know what would be a good base wig for that.

Any help at all would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

>> No.8293268

>>8293251
If your niece is young, Arda's wigs might be too big for her. For eBay, it can be a hit and miss. Try to find stores with a lot of reviews talking about accurate pictures, and it should be fine. If you have difficulty styling wigs, finding a prestyled one is also an option since Sakura's wig is more or less popular enough for that. If you want to style it yourself, then find a base wig of about chin length. You'll loose a little bit of length when you make the sides floof, and it's better too long than too short.

Check the reviews of the eBay stores those wigs can actually be pretty good. The better quality ones will tend to also say "heat resistant." Depending on how old she is those China wigs are good because they run on the small side. Arda's are kind of huge.

Though these days I lean towards Amazon for my China wigs because it's easier to find clear reviews. A quick search for "sakura wig" has yielded good results already. Jsut make sure you order with enough time for them to ship because cheap good wigs tend to ship super slow.

Pear shape here and it's tough. It's usually better to get some serious compression shorts on your ass to bring it in. The most important thing is the cut of your costume. I don't know what it is but for example if I want my bf t crossplay suit Saber we get a woman's business suit because the curvy cut creates the illusion of a more womany shape. If I want to be a guy in a suit we get a men's suit with straight boxy lines. If you're making your costume look into patterns meant for men.

This is my first cosplay. I bought all the materials I think i need but whenever I try to sit down to work on it I feel so hopeless.

I need to make demon wings. I bought gauge wire, air clay, mod podge, foam sheets, and paint. This is advice from another cosplay friend who has more experience than me, and this is the plan we made

>Make the frame for the wings with wire
>Form clay around wire frame
>Wait until it dries out
>Use the mod podge "sealant" (tbh i still dont know what this even does exactly)
>wait for it to dry
>paint it my desired color
>Use craft foam to fill in the rest of the actual wing

Does this sound good? I dont know how i'm going to attach the foam to the clay frame... but I need to start soon

>> No.8294641

>>8294437

I haven't made wings, but to answer your question, the 'sealant' step is to create a better surface for your paint to bond to. Some materials don't take paint well.

However that seems a bit broken. Generally between sculpting and painting you apply what is called a primer. Then you paint, THEN you add a sealant like Mod podge. It seems like maybe you are confusing mod podge with gesso.

You can try to fix the mask by heating up the plastic around the eye holes and pushing them out a bit. Then I put on my makeup like usual and the tiny amount of foundation/powder that gets trapped in my brows serve as the base to hold the highlighter mascara that I go over the brows with. Mod Podge is typically used as the last step to seal your project. I would probably go out and buy a primer like Gesso to use before painting. Don't worry, you can get heaps of it pretty cheap, check craft/art stores and even newsagents for the cheapest version. Gesso is great because you can sand it too and give your project a really smooth finish.

Mod Podge is still a great product and a good thing for you to be using, it just goes on last.

Maybe post a pic of the wings you're making for more advice?

For my first con coming up this summer, I plan on cosplaying as Mikoshiba/Mikorin from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun. It's not that difficult, but I would like a bit of feed back as I go along, so I can be sure to stay on the right track.

I just picked up the collared shirt and undershirt today from a thrift shop. The collared shirt fits well and is light, but I'm iffy on the orange shirt. After looking at references, sometimes his undershirt has the collar outlined in a darker red color instead of full orange. How does it look as of now? I've still got a month and a half to go, so going shopping to pick up better clothes is no problem.

Aside from that, I've started to look into wigs, with some hit and miss results. I don't want to pull the trigger too soon, but would anyone have any favorite/recommended wig shops? Thanks for any and all input, I appreciate it!

It's a very simple costume, so it means you should pay more attention to the details since there are so few. For starters, you should either attach the school emblem on the pocket or neatly seam-rip the pocket off, embroidered or bond the emblem on, then sew it back on. Make sure you get some generic brown loafers as well (those are very common in thrift stores/cheap shoes stores). I can't tell what sort of pants you're wearing, but don't do denim or jeans. Finally, this is going to sound odd, SHAVE your arms. The character's image is a hairless arms guy even if having arm hair is natural for a man.

>> No.8296618

>>8296601

-I already went ahead and ordered a sew-able patch for the breast pocket in the right color a few days ago, so I've got that covered. I can just sew that straight on, since I believe the dimensions are just right.
-I did a bit of looking today while I was out, but wasn't able to find a pair of loafers that were just right either, so that's on my list of things to do. Not too many references of his shoes unfortunately.
-Wearing jeans in that picture, but I've got navy dress slacks on my list as well. Those I'll probably have to get brand new since my size is hard to come by.
-Finally, I noticed the hair bit when looking for references. I admit that it seems a bit odd, since I've never done it before, but it's definitely doable and would probably make it look better. Thanks for this tip though, since in the back of my head I was wondering how necessary it was.

Aside from that, my only concerns for details lies in the wig, eye color (red), and the fact that his ears are pierced. I suppose eyes aren't that huge of a deal, more of a nit-picky sort of thing, but I'm on edge about the earrings (or should I say studs?). I'm guessing there are probably fake studs or something similar online that I could get.

Thanks for the advice though, really helps me organize my list of things to look into/get.

To those of you who have worked with eva foam, do you think I'd be able to get away with using gesso and paint primer as a sealant? I was considering covering the pieces with worbla and gessoing over top, but if I could just avoid worbla overall I think my wallet would be happier. I'm making small, very basic arm guards and boot covers.

>> No.8296806

>>8296795
Personally I find wood glue forms a better "shell" Unless you've super reinforce the back that stuff will bend throughout transport or the cone and I don't think gesso handles flexibility well. Also paint primer is a little broad. If it's a spray paint primer you need a really good seal over your foam or teh aerosol will "melt" or distort the surface

>> No.8296819

>>8296795
You don't need worbla at all, the following is my favorite method that I found a few months back

1- Finish building the piece
2- Float the heat gun over all of the surfaces to tighten and set the surface. Don't go crazy or hot-glued seams will separate.
3- I look over the pieces for pinholes or openings in seams, and fill these with paintable silicone caulking. I just use my finger to smear it in, then let it dry.
4-Mix PVA glue and water at about a 4:1 ratio, I try to get it a little thinner than house paint. I paint on my coats as thin as possible. I check the pieces a couple of times in the first half hour, brushing out any runs and pooled areas in corners and joints; if you don't get them out when they're wet, they're much harder to clean up later. You can get away with 2 coats, but 3 or more gives you a much better finish.
5- I then follow up with a couple of coats of Plastidip (spray). Some people paint right over the PVA coats, with good results. I noticed on my pieces, especially flexible sections like the abs and gloves, that repeated flexing created cracking and fissuring in the PVA. A couple of coats of Plastidip seals the PVA, hiding most all of my cracking. It also gives the pieces a uniform color over the PVA, so I can catch any extra imperfections that I didn't see in the PVA coat.

There are some fabric that come with a scalloped edge, but I don't know where to find them. I've seen Kotori cosplayers use them.
You can also get a fabric that doesn't fray easily and just cut the edges, run it down with fray check.
Or you can get white fabric and lace and just dye them, and use the lace to substitute.

I think the lace would turn out pretty and more-detailed-looking than the scallops.

How could I make this? The clothing is fairly simple, I'm just trying to figure how to become a huge yellow alien octopus. I don't have a clue on how to get a perfectly round head and being able to see with it. For the tentacles, I considered making a wire structure, covering it with foam and then with fabric but I don't really like the way fabric looks, since his skin looks pretty smooth looking. Suggestions very welcome

I would do something like the official and make the tentacle structures for the arms and from the knees down. Everything else is covered up by his robe, so it'll cut you some slack and look fine as long as you wear some bit of padding (have the robe hang straight down will make the character look anorexic). The head can be bought commercially as well; an official head mask has been made and sold for about 3000 yen. So is the official robe and hat, for that matter.

I'm looking to do a Dark Phoenix cosplay and need some tips/help figuring out how to make it work.

I haven't had much practice sewing full pieces of clothing though I'd love to make this. I was considering using these: http://store.americanapparel.ca/shiny-nylon-tricot-leggings_rnt38?c=Red in Red for the bottoms and going to a fabric store for the gold boot covers and what not. Thank you for the advice anyhow, I wasn't aware there was an official head mask being sold, all the ones I've seen for sale looked pretty crappy. The robe and the hat should be fairly simple to make.
Thanks for the photo as well, it seems like the official one has the tentacles covered in fabric..

Well at least you posted in here.
Unless you can find the exact same type/color of fabric, you shouldn't get those and it's probably a better idea to make the whole thing one piece rather than two.
Googling 'cosplay glove tutorial' gives you instructions on the gloves and find yourself a bodysuit pattern like the Yaya one. If you can manage, sew the gold parts as part the bodysuit for easier wearing though that'll be a challenge on its own and applique on the logo.

In the process of making an Edea Lee cosplay but I'm not sure what material to make the red out of. I was thinking red vinyl because it would have the armory look, but it may be too thick and end up looking weird in the chest area with darts. Broadcloth is a shitty cotton don't listen to that person or take advice from them ever again. Personally I'd make a hard form for the front out of worbla and foam then stretch lycra or vinyl around it for the smooth look. It would work well for the hip armor bits. ok so I posted in here before about this plaid. I think I have the pattern finalized, but now it's color that I need help with... specifically how colors are going to translate in print.

Because I'm an idiot I put everything off until the last second, and basically I'm not going to have time to do a test print. I'm doing this costume with a few other friends, and this con coming up is the only chance for us to all meet up until the same con next year, so putting it off isn't something we're willing to do. We'd rather have skirts that are maybe a little off and have fun together.

So... how's the best way to ensure the colors don't come out super offensively terrible? They have a color chart on spoonflower of colors which "print pretty well", but unfortunately none of those colors are close to the colors I need.

If it helps, we're printing them on cotton poplin, which I hear is a bit more vibrant than other fabrics? Any and all advice on this crisis situation is appreciated!!
And before you say it... yes, I have learned my lesson. We were stubborn and thought we could find close enough plaid for cheaper somewhere else.

Those are the only colors that Spoonflower will print and their computer will take your image and find the closest matches. I find it kind of hard to believe that they don't have any color close to what you have there.

The color chart is pretty limited. They have some that are kind of similar, but still really distinctly off (in particular, they're all way too bright)
I can combine them in ways that produce closer colors, by layering them and playing with opacity, but I'm not sure if those combination colors will be any more likely to print correctly than any other color that's not specifically on this chart.

Is PPI just the same as DPI in this case? I wasn't able to find a very straight answer on that... and the default is 300 for me, but when I plug 300 dpi into spoonflower the design gets really tiny. I mean if my document really is 300 dpi I can easily scale the design (that's why I chose illustrator in the first place) but I am suspicious that that's really the correct dpi....

You could use invisible straps, which are harder to see. If you don't want to use those I would say try and make it a color close to your skin tone so it's not obscene. You also may be able to hide the straps with the wig a little, but I wouldn't rely on that. Good luck.

Tadashi anon here again, I'm honestly reconsidering buying the green blazer again due to the lack of adequate white blazers I could find. Here's the green blazer in question:

http://www.rosewe.com/ol-style-green-long-sleeve-turndown-collar-woman-blazer-g115127.html?utm_source=polyvore&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=140902114-2

So I took some quick measurements and here they are:

shoulder: ~40cm
bust: 82cm
sleeve: 54cm
clothing: 61cm
(I'm a small dude)

So I was comparing this to the size guide on the website and I would be very happy with getting the XS size but one problem: my shoulders are way too big, I would have to get a XL at least to accommodate them. Problem is that while the sleeve and clothing length can easily be fixed, the +14cm on the bust is going to be really noticeable and I'm not sure how to sew that away (I have a sewing machine but I have never ever used it). Luckily, I have some friends that can sew a bit so that leaves me with two options:

a) Get XS, and try to make the shoulders bigger somehow
b) Get XL, and try to make the bust lower somehow

Wat do?

I need help finding the remaining pieces for my Okabe cosplay.

I am wondering where I can find:

1) a lab coat that is around the same length as Okabe's. Most sites only go to about 40" and with me being 5' 11", it isn't long enough. I found one on eBay I can get custom-made, but it is $120 after shipping and I don't think it's worth spending an extra $80 for a longer coat.

2) A belt like Okabe's. I am sure they are all over Amazon, I just don't know what the style of his belt is called.

I appreciate any responses and suggestions, thanks!
