I'm planning on visiting NYC at some point in the summer and my brother warned me about the heat and humidity. At some point, I want to wear lolita and visit Baby & Tokyo Rebel, but the only baby pieces I own are more appropriate for the fall/winter (and a skirt I own is off-white - worst purchase ever - I don't want to risk getting it dirty). Would the store owners care if I wore something from, let's say AP (since my AP items are more suitable for the heat) or would it be better if I cut my losses didn't wear lolita at all?

I also saw the mark up on those sites. Do they tend to have in-store sales like they would in Japanese stores?

Baby and Tokyo Rebel are physically located in the same store space, they aren't gonna care if you're wearing AP.

If you're planning on taking the subway during summer, don't wear Lolita unless you want it infused with hot garbage stank. If you're going to be mostly indoors and just walking around outside, the lightest Lolita you have will be ok. My advice is pack what you want to wear, and check the forecast. if local temps are at 85ish or lower, you're good.

Alternatively, I advice that you go to the stores in normal clothes and bring a blouse & petti in a bag if you want to be able to try things on. This way if you get sweaty on the way to the store, you can change into a clean blouse to try things on with (you must be wearing a blouse to try things on, and you cannot try on blouses) and also you will not be sweating in your brand all day.

They sometimes have sales/marked down things, but not by much. They do however have point cards for both Baby and Tokyo Rebel (separate cards iirc) and they will often have novelty fair items.

follow guidelines. there is the Lolita Guidebook on tumblr which was a cgl effort and is maintained by a seagull. start with the basics there, and then come back here when you have specific questions those bases did not seem to cover.

meanwhile:
-practice makeup. guys tend to go right for lipstick and eyeshadow and look like a sissy mess, so get your full game down and start subtle. aim for a "natural" look.
-tips for tall lolitas exist everywhere. look at the LGB mentioned earlier.
-quality is your highest priority, followed by versatility. do not wear cheap, wrinkled, ugly shit. post to the Coord Help Thread with a collage of ideas to get feedback while shopping. they will tell you if it's gross.
-don't mention your gender on 4chan if at all possible. for one, not all men have the same body parts, hair features, etc. isolate the parts of yourself that might be problematic and mention them where appropriate, i.e.:

>Do you think this OP will work for a wide-shouldered lolita, or should I stick to the JSK version?
>How do I contour my makeup to look cute? My face is squarish and angular and I hate my nose.

you will probably get more responses the more specific you are in your questions.

thick OTKs or tights and and tall boots. if hair pokes through just shave it and wear long pants if you're embarrassed.

Personally, I'm a grill and I don't shave my legs for lolita, since I wear OTK socks or tights at all times.

The brolitas that get shunned are usually sissies or creeps, so if you don't fall under that category, you should be fine. orgasmicyogurt comes to mind, he looks better than many girls. Looking feminine is definitely important though, so get a cincher if you have no waist, make sure your beard shade is concealed, etc. You can take some inspiration from drag queens even on where to place your shadows.

Honestly just shave your legs. Not only is no one going to notice IRL (just wear pants for a week) it'll also grow back, fast, and it won't be that bad.

If you do shave make sure to have a couple razors handy to get through all the hair, there will be a lot. And exfoliate! Either make a sugar scrub with olive oil and brown sugar or buy one. Use some lotion afterwards. Tights look gross over hairy legs unless you're wearing a pair with very high denier, and we're getting into spring/summer so I wouldn't advise that.

I do this a lot in winter since I nearly always wear thick tights since I get cold easily and my tip if your hair starts poking through after a while wearing is to pull the material of your tights away from your legs so it's away from the hair, then let it snap back. It should fix it. My hair is very blonde and fine above the knee anyway though, YMMV if you have South Asian genetics or some shit.

generalization ahead.

guys interested in lolita often think throwing on a cute dress is enough. but women are used to every part of them being scrutinized, and so they are more likely to have an idea (exaggerated, often) of their flaws and will focus things like makeup and clothing cuts to fix or flatter themselves. the guys in lolita who get sneered at have no sense of that kind of self-perfectionism (and neither do itas).

to be a lolita means you need to take honest inventory of your assets and liabilities. it can become an unhealthy obsession but just stick to basics. have acne? find the right concealer. uneven skin tone or large pores with visible sebaceous filaments? foundation could help. giant messy eyebrows? trim them to have an even appearance. wearing a wig? make sure it is combed and styled, not shiny, etc.

there is a balance between taking care to look nice and hating yourself for your natural looks. i have no advice on avoiding self-loathing but just remember that the point is to not look messy or dirty.

A good example of this is the UK series of What Not To Wear. They released books based around this telling you what looks were good and bad for different problems (huge tits, no tits, flabby stomach, short legs, bingo wings, etc). Looking at that sort of thing with advice for women with, say, a manly jaw or wide shoulders might help. (Luckily lolita already disguises narrow hips). You can also find mtf passing guides that will help you femininze your shape.

I appreciate this post. This is what I'm concerned the most about, because I typically just wear shorts and a t-shirt and comb my hair in the morning and that's all the effort I put into my appearance. (The fact that I wear shorts is part of why I don't want to shave, especially in the summer).

Thanks everybody for the help. From reading some of this I think my casual interest in Lolita and my latent interest in crossdress should be kept separate for now. There's probably better outlets if the main thing I want to do is wear overly poofy dresses, OTKs and a wig

To start with, mascara is gonna be the #1 helper, even if you don't do eyeliner or eye shadow, mascara will make a huge difference.

My "i have no idea what I'm doing" makeup routine for lolita:

- Pore Minimizer - I use Dr. brandt but Nyx makes a cheap one. You dab this over any parts of your skin where you may have visible pores, smooth it with your fingers and let it set about 5 minutes.
- BB cream - you can use a sponge but I usually use my fingers. Apply it all over your face in a thin layer, and make sure you apply it around your eyes, and make sure it's not patchy/uneven. Don't rub it in, just sort of pat/dab (that's general advice for all makeup application)
- If you're gonna use eye makeup, do your light eye shadow, then your dark eye shadow, then liner, then mascara, then touch up liner if you want/need.
- Just a little bit of blush on the cheeks
- A light lip tint. Even just a lip balm/chapstick is good.

If you're just learning how to do makeup, and you live in the US, you can subscribe to Ipsy for $10 a month and they will send you makeup samples to try out, find brands you like (that's how I discovered Dr. Brandt) and in my case it makes me experiment with techniques/products I'd have been too afraid to and overall I've gotten a little more confident in my routine.

>> No.8275027

>>8275021
Oh, two things I forgot, let the BB cream set too - I have makeup "fixer" spray that I spray between "stages" - after foundation/BB, after eyes, after blush/contour so that the makeup lasts a little longer. It's a good 'second tier' makeup investment after you've got your basics sorted out and you're looking for supplementary stuff to make it easier/better.

Are there any companies that make dresses similar to Mary Magdalene? I could never get into prints and other brands just don't have the style I like. There is no price check thread, maybe I can get here some help?

How much is the IW Bertille Rose Dress JSK in wine worth? I think I paid too much for it and doubt I will get it back when I try to sell it.
The JSK has still it's tags attached and I never bothered to try it on. I know the previous owner tried it on but that is all I know of it's history.

Would a hairstyle like this, but with longer bangs, be appropriate with lolita? Any other ideas for short hairstyles?

What's your usual style? If it involves head-eating bows, it's going to be hard to pull it off with that bob.

If you keep your outfit less poofy it should be able to work with berets, hairclips, flower garlands, headbands, and the type of headbows that lie flat rather than stand up on your head.

If you do need to go OTT for a brand tea party or a con you could always add clip ins or something.

I have them in size L and the insoles measure 25cm, not 25,5 cm. My feet measure 24cm, so a size M would definitely be too small. Also keep in mind that the soles are kind of stiffly and and the shoes are not comfortable to walk in for an entire day, but stuffing them with extra insoles really does wonders to the comfort. If you buy the smaller size, you woudln't be able to use insoles anymore most likely, so keep that in mind when making a purchase.

How much does altering brand ruin the resale price?

I bought this JetJ dress thinking I could wear the cowl neck like this image. But the fabric isn't stretchy at all so it's really not suitable to be worn that way and I just end up tucking the cowl neck in. I'm thinking I should just alter it like a plain JSK (similar to Rosary Solennel) since I don't like the excess fabric and that kind of cut is more flattering imo anyway.
