8258356 No.8258356 [Reply] [Original]

May 22-25, 2015 at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, CA

Current Guests of Honor:
Kazuhiro Soeta (Who?)
"WindOfTheStars" (Huh?)
Chalk Twins (Zuh?)

Hotels rooms are all booked, AA was a literal crapshoot, Clockwork Alchemy just won't go away, and four of my roomies don't feel like going any more. So, what are your plans for this year?

>> No.8258530

>>8258356
Oh god, Chalk Twins. They're cute girls but nobody cares about animu drawn in chalk, it's dumb and they aren't even very good. Plus, I don't think they're actually twins but I can't remember exactly.

General plans are just hanging out, getting good eats and hitting up the SMT/Persona gatherings as well as the comedy club.

The Cosplay Wrestling Federation is coming back to Fanime and I really hope the show we put on will be as good as the one we had last year.

>> No.8258815

This is only my second year attending so the entire con is still plenty new and fun for me. But my main points of interest are the smt/Persona meet ups and events, checking out cosplayers and the AA, even though I'm not sure if it'll even be worth checking out this year according to the last thread.

What are everybody's cosplay plans for Fanime?

I always try to contribute to the con as much as possible! Since it seems like fanime has embraced the party con atmosphere, I find that volunteering and contributing is a great way to meet people and hang out in more structured environments (since I'm aspie and bad at social)
So I'll be doing the maid cafe for the second year, which I'm really hyped for! My friend and I host fanimad libs every year and it sounds like our 18+ one might get a 2 hour slot this time, which is something we've always wanted. Hoping to add loads more content this year.
Other random plans include After School Navigators at karaoke since I've got a small love live group of nico rin and hanayo, and the yurikuma ed so my friends and I can have an excuse to do the bear dance! Also general big cosplay plans that I'm excited/terrified about. Lots of work, totally worth it though.

I finally got all my travel/rooming stuff worked out, so I'm fucking relieved and excited at this point. Only worry left is safely transporting a bigass prop.

Fanime has had shit guests for the past few years, which is really unfortunate, but I discovered that once you stop giving a shit about that, it's a really fun con. It has some of the funniest/most fun panels, people are really laid-back and friendly so it's easy to chat and get recs for cool stuff, love all the restaurants in the area, cosplay photoshoots are a good highlight, and at least the music guests are usually cool.

I've started looking at the lackluster guest list as a way to free up my schedule--since I don't give a shit about any of their shitty guests, I'm not stuck waiting in line for their shitty guest panels and have way more time to go with the flow and try new stuff.

Anyway, if there's gonna be a seagull meeting, I would highly recommend that area. It's like a 10, 15m walk. On the way there's like a gaming bar that's your typical bar, but with like... games.... and shit....

All my bitching paid off and I got a table for Fanime, so I'm set for that. Gonna cosplay Takemonos Rin with my roomie and I'm thinking about trying to put together Maps Mizoguchi from Gotham Academy. Does anyone know a hot Asian dude I can sucker into cosplaying a hot older brother.

Fanime's "drama" is usually because it's volunteer-based, so that means that for any volunteer con there's usually a shortage of people and people doubling up on multiple jobs. Some of the main aspects of Fanime have been delayed because while it's so expansive, a lot of the staff are doing this as volunteer work and have their own jobs and other personal obligations to attend to. It makes it challenging for any volunteer or group convention.

To be fair, I heard much more drama two years back when Linecon was really bad than last year. It made a huge difference not to devote a whole con day to a 5 hour line after a previous 8 hour drive to SJ.

>>8261771
This. AX is filled with so much internal crap and everyone knows it. Their compensations for some of their staff departments for how much they really have to work on is horrendous.

A couple of years back, a masquerade coordinator was publicly fired the day after masquerade and escorted out by security after one of the dumb higher-ups said he breached policies and other shit she made up on the spot.

The coordinator posted a very lengthy summary of all of the lack of effort from AX higher ups to make masquerade happen, as well as the real backstory behind the really horrible prizes given out that year. One group got a serger or some fancy sewing machine while an advanced craftsmanship group got an old Cosmode magazine and some cards or some shit. It was also the same year when they started asking for useless intro videos, which the coordinator explained was something that they didn't even opt for, it was a higher-up who wanted it, and they got stuck having to redo and fix new ones for several contestants working overnight up until masquerade.

Its hot. The convention doesn't have enough money to get a larger ballroom or even make it two ballrooms instead of one. I went in 2007 and it was a very small video room at the back of the convention. In 2010 it was a ballroom over in the fancy hotel that I never remember the name of. Im so bad with naming shit.. I dont ever stay in the hotels, so I have no reason to know the names.

I have actually asked someone about moving it to a convention room that is unused and the answer was no because money and the flooring. There is a projector that will show what dance and style will come next along with corresponding song. They may have the men on one side and ladies on the other side dances as well and then you both walk to the middle of the floor and pick the partner in front of you and do the dance for it. Usually the waltz.

There are tables set up kind of like a prom where you an sit and relax. DO NOT BE AN ASSHOLE AND LEAVES YOU BAGS WHEREVER. Those people are the worst and I sure as hell hope their shit gets stolen.

If you want to make it really fun for yourself you should attend some of the ballroom dancing classes they have Friday-Sunday until the actual dance. These will help you not look like an idiot, but if you can't attend that it okay. There are people there who will gladly demonstrate and help you dance to certain styles if you aren't sure.

Please dress appropriately. There is a thread on the forum site where you can take a photo and submit it to ask the hosters whether you outfit will be appropriate. Also, TEST YOUR SHOES. Please DO NOT wear heels that will ruin ANY flooring. Black heels need to especially be tested to make sure you don't leave marks on the flooring.

First of all the venue moved over to the tech museum so now its very large, spacious and well ventilated. You can easily sit in the many chairs and tables provided or you can dance on the hardwood floors.

If your boyfirend is not good dancing then I second the anon's advice of going to the lessons during the day. They teach multiple styles and are pretty easy to follow. If you feel self cautious then make sure you dance around the edges as that's were the less experienced couples go and there's plenty of room for everyone

Two weeks, are you nuts? Other cons have their shit together/announced months beforehand. Two weeks before might be fine for people who live right in San Jose, but for people traveling even from small distances, they need to know what's up way earlier to judge if going is even worth it for them. And there are people who like to make guest-relevant cosplays.

>> No.8279252

I travel 4 hours, thank you. Two weeks is plenty of time. In what world is 14 days not a good amount of time to plan something? Take one day out of that two week time span and sit down and plan stuff out for an hour. Its not that hard. I work and go to school and I still have time and I've been attending for almost 10 years.

>> No.8279253

>>8279249

Sakuracon does that every year. They don't even start announcing guests until about two months beforehand. It's a common thing, even if it's not a common thing that people are okay with.

>> No.8279257

>>8279253
So many conventions do this and a lot of the time its not just the convention's fault. These possible guests have channels that the conventions has to go through in order to reach some of them and last minute notice isnt unheard of for a lot of these guests. Its not just the convention. Its not as easy as sending an email straight to a voice actor/actress or a popular music group.

>> No.8279262

>>8279252

If they suddenly announce a guest you want to see and you weren't originally planning on attending, 14 days isn't enough advance notice to guarantee time off work let alone get a room. The only way you're getting a room at two weeks out is if you stay offsite in a hotel not affiliated with the con and take public transport, or you miraculously find a friend with space in the closet in their hotel room. Never mind transportation costs.

>> No.8279277

>>8279262
Then thats your fault for one, waiting months later to get a hotel room. Two, guest being your only reason to attend Fanime.

Any smart person for any convention anywhere is that you book the room right as they go up because they fly off the shelves. That argument is so dumb and has nothing to do with guests.

>> No.8279284

>>8279257

Not the anon you're replying to, but I've got good friends in guest relations/guest acquisitions at a couple cons up and down the west coast. Most of them agree that the only reasons why a guest hasn't been announced at a month or even two weeks beore con are:

1. Because the contract states that they can't be announced before a certain date
2. the convention is being miserly with their guest announcements
3. They are literally so fucking unorganized that nobody remembered to announce the guest on time

This shit is taken care of months and months in advance, and musical guests are usually brought to the US on the dime of multiple conventions at once so that the band can do a tour before heading home (especially in the case of biger groups. Fanime and AWA went in on HMK together last year, IIRC)

Not announcing a guest until a month or two weeks before con pisses guests the fuck off, man. The less notice there is, the less hype/press they get beforehand. In the case of musical guests, that means they might not fill the venue.

Never mind the fact that if they still don't have guests locked down by /now/, they're basically fucked as far as booklet and signage printing goes unless they pay out the nose for a rush order. Not that that matters much, since Fanime is fucking shit at actually having booklets and guides printed before the con fucking starts.

>> No.8279293

>>8279284
This isn't just a Fanime thing though. Fanime just happens to be the next convention coming up in NorCal.

Also, considering the demographic of Fanime, regardless of the music group and when it is announced, there will be hype. Seriously though, if guests is the only reason people attend conventions then that is seriously really depressing. There are so many other things to do at conventions besides meet someone after waiting in line for 4 hours and shaking their hand for 10 seconds.

To me, meeting guests is a huge waste of time. About as wasteful as waiting 6 hours for Masquerade.

>> No.8279309

>>8279293

Yeah, but to other people meeting guests is their entire reason for being. It's like how some people can't live without reading every single celeb gossip rag they can find, but other people just sorta stand next to the rack in the grocery line in uncomfortable silence wondering why people read that shit. I'm sure plenty of other people share your view (and I'm one of them, because goddamn, standing in line to meet someone is super overrated) but conventions have to be courteous to all parties involved in their operation. The people who are crazy enough to stand in line for four hours to meet someone and get a signature are paying for a badge too.

>> No.8279314

14 days is a long time. If you don't plan to attend a convention before guests are announced and hotels go up, then you shouldn't attend anyway.

THIS.

I like how some of the chucklefucks in here think it's totally OK to have to scramble to get a hotel, flights/travel arrangements, and time off of work 2 weeks before a con if waiting for announcements is no big deal. Not realistic for most of us. If guests are a deciding factor in whether or not it's worth attending a con (NOBODY IS SAYING THEY'RE THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS, so stop implying that, people), they should probably be announced when that information can still actually be put to use.

Oh, and Sakuracon announcing guests 2 months beforehand is a much bigger timeframe than 2 weeks. Not really comparable.

The only reason I was /allowed/ to eat (they didn't let us leave the building) from noon to 8pm was because one of the staff photographers ran out to the sidewalk and got me a hot dog from a street vendor.

Also Wayne Kaa shouldn't be allowed to judge craftsmanship. A friend of mine competed a couple years ago and when she explained how she painted the design on her skirt he straight up asked her, no joking tone or anything, "Are you lying to me?"

He accused another friend of mine who competed that year of lying about really weird minute details of her costume, like the bead strands in her wig.

Plus the prizes are fucking shit. The best non-trophy prize I ever got from them was a copy of Newtype from 1992, and I only kept it because it had an article about Kamen Rider Black RX in it. They literally hand you a plastic takeout bag of magazine inserts, Fanime staff t-shirts from the early 00's, and post cards from conventions in Cali that don't even exist anymore.

Told my mother I refuse to take my sister and her friend to Fanime now. Considering how they have been acting I don't want to deal with their attitudes and last year was probably my least favorite because I had to babysit. I couldn't stay out late to hang with friends, I had to go home early if one of them was tired, I had to attend shitty Monday because they wanted to, if someone did something good or got a photo the other would complain and cry about it while the other would constantly brag.

So yeah. Mom is pissed off saying it is like telling someone they are going to Disneyland then taking that away two weeks before, but frankly she wasn't there last year. She has no idea how much of a fucking bunch of brats they were for 10 year olds. Being 11 only makes it worse. Im a bad person apparently right now, but she will get over it. I want to enjoy my 10th year, not be held back by whining children.

I'd agree with that. You had a year to say "nope, fuck that shit." If I were you I'd still leave them at home but I would have declared it earlier so maybe your mom could have been the one dragged along with them.

I tried three months ago and got the same yelling about it. They will get over it. To be honest, neither of them seem to really care about going. My sister doesn't really even seem interested in wearing any of her cosplays I got for her and all she said she would do it spend all her money and not do much else because she's so young she doesn't give a damn about panels or the game room or any of the other events. She only cares about the AA and DR and last thing I need if her not spending any money on food again and me having to pay out of my entertainment pocket for her to force eat.

Well they said they wanted to go in December and I told them we will see. Then late January I was like, "Hey mom. You know what, I don't really want to take them. I want to go to Fanime myself this year and hang with my friends and go to parties". She said no and ignored me and told me I was selfish.

:| Still no news about whether they are going or not, so I brought it up today and said "So, Im going to Fanime alone right?" Holy shit. Mistakes were made. I don't feel bad though. I'll be able to actually have fun.

You should have posed it differently. You did sound selfish if you put it as "I want to go by myself, hang with friends, go to parties." If you had mentioned how much they were little shits (obviously in much friendlier terms) it would have gone over better and would be more understandable to your mom. As far as she knows they were little princesses the whole time.

Was kind of debating whether or not I should post this, but if any of you see me Id be glad to say "Hi" back. I ordered my Belle wig the other day from Arda, so I'm hoping to get it in before the convention. I've never bought from them before. I don't know how long it takes, but the shipping says 3-5 days. Let's hope it stays that way. Still gotta make her hair bow too.

I'm debating whether I really want to finish Tibbers also. I'm so upset with how its looks. Im horrible at sewing. I also have new Velma pieces with actual mary janes, so revamping her. I don't know what to do with my ballgown.

Does anyone have any ideas of who I could cosplay wearing it for the Black and White Ball? The back of it had a hidden inner slit that when opened it shows a white satin fabric. Its kind of cool. I got it at Goodwill years ago for $15.00. Its just like a ballgown my mom has and hers was over $300.00. Best find at Goodwill ever. Was 2x too big for me, so I had a tailor take it in, so its custom sized for me now. :3

>they changed their panelist discount system and I totally forgot that means I have to buy my ticket in advance

Does anyone know if panelists still get to skip the line with this new system?

>planning to get hotel room with bf and 4 of his friends
>got lucky booking something after hotels all sold out, at the more expensive hotel across the street
>he tells me fucking today that 3 of them have flaked out

Sooo, I guess it's either going to be a really expensive stay or I'll have to troll for rando roomates on FB

Don't know if I'll bring Arashiyama… I haven't fixed up the costume since I wore it last Summer and looks like the two people I was going to World Trigger with won't be able to get their costumes done on time. It depends if a friend brings her Enedora or not, I guess. Otherwise I'll bring Maou or maybe Melodias instead.
