Working on a Fire Emblem comission.

I'm making Mercenary Armor, so it's a small shield and some Greeves as well as the Brave Sword. I still have a shit ton of work to do with shaping, filling and sanding, but I am pretty happy with the way that everything is turning out so far, even though I am still a long ways away from being finished.

It's my first time working with Sintra, and I love the material so fucking much. It cuts just like MDF and sands like a dream!

Far more so than Pink foam

>Also does it come in 1" thickness and can I use a hole saw on it?
It generally comes in 1/2'' to 1/4 '' sheets, but is easily stackable. And you can use virtually any tool on it.

>And can it be coated in liquid plastic?
No real need. It doesn't need to be sealed.

>How well does glue hold it together?
Very

A big problem with these insulation foam props is that you have to coat them, since the foam dissolves to a lot of diffeerent paints. That means it's hard to get a good, sharp edge, and sometimes the prop comes out looking chunky, if you know what I mean.

Sintra doesn't have those problems. Nowadays I rarely use insulation foam for anything but like massive props that need it.

Do note that Sintra is substantially more expensive than pink foam or foam board, and somewhat harder to obtain.

However, you can actually create hollow props because of how stiff it is, so that actually saves a good deal of cost AND weight.

The autism makes her cute. I like autistic characters like that. The animation is solid and It's got a good sense of humor.

Why liquid plastic? If I ever work with insulation foam, I usually just coat it with acrylic paint or some thinned wood glue, or just use Gesso. $50 for liquid plastic feels like too much

Well, you can't exactly work with what you don't know, but I get what you mean. It's a common sentient with cosplayers, and why so many poor cosplays end up being made with paper clay and shit - because it's "all they know"

There's nothing wrong with using your skillset, but you should always try to expand it.

For a pattern I used Simplicity 1361. Ignore the terrible fabric they used for their sample. to give an idea of what you can do with sintra, these hand tomahawks were made out of sintra and wooden dowels. the blades we cut using a hand saw (the blade thickness is two 1/4" pieces of sintra glued together), the edges were tapered with a hand sanding block and, and all primed and painted. no coating required. this project took like three days to put together, from start to finish, and they are super lightweight and great for cons cause they don't break super easy but they ain't going to cut or hurt no body. sorry for the shitty photo tho

Why would you use apoxie sculpt on that? Simple wood, even a slab of sintra or plastic coated with bondo. Seems like a waste of apoxie.

hmmm only a 30 minute working time? where are you from? maybe it's a humidity thing, cause it's pretty humid where i live. so that may be delaying the cure time but ya, it takes forever to dry for me.

Starting on Fanime progress...a month before Fanime...hah...

I have this Nozomi wig that looks OK but doesn't have the weird gray purple color she's got going on. So I thought I'd attempt to sew some lighter wefts in it to help with that. I'm also going through and straightening it/trimming the ends since it's a taobao wig and tends to frizz a lot.

Shitty lighting I had to bump up in line but I think its looking nice so far. I'm hoping to have it done by Friday evening.

I might suggest using something under the apoxie sculpt to make it more durable. Usually with thin flat-ish items like that I've used craft foam and covered it in apoxie sculpt--it makes it a bit more impact resistant (it might crack, but it won't break in half, so you can repair it more easily). It's a little annoying to get the apoxie sculpt on it, but it works pretty well once you get going in my experience.

Why? Using both gives you the benefits of both materials. The foam core makes the apoxie sculpt less brittle and prone to shattering and the apoxie sculpt surface gives the foam a hard, sandable surface that you can't really achieve as well by other means. I mean, you could do something similar with a piece of fabric or something to give it some additional strength, but foam's just a little easier to work with in my experience.

I don't think it'd be significantly thicker than what you ended up with out of just apoxy sculpt (you wanna use the thinner craft foam, I mean, you could probably just use cardstock or anything like that too tbh). The idea is just to give it something more flexible on the inside to stick to so if it's stressed it doesn't break in half.

>> No.8278347

>>8278338
My problem with using a base is that if I need to sand further or something, I'm limited by the bulk of the base.

Well, with a core the apoxie sculpt can get pretty damn thin and still be useable. idk maybe it's a dumb idea for something that small, but that's been my preferred method for dealing with bigger 'flat' 3d items like that since I can't use shit like fiberglass or resin in my apartment.

You could probably even just press some fabric into it from the inside while it's still somewhat malleable (and then cover it over with a thin layer of apoxie sculpt) to get the same kind of scaffolding effect.

I used a newsboy hat pattern I found on google and just avoided the bill part. Basically it is 6 petal shaped pieces of fabric sewn together (I also lined it) in a circle. I then ran it through my gathering foot until it comfortably fit my head which also gives it the bubble shape. Lining it or at least interfacing it is important because otherwise it'll just flop too much.

I hand sewed a wig comb right into the front and then a big snap on the center to attach the bow. The bow is kinda heavy though so I'm definitely going to put more wig combs in.

Hope that helps!

I like that you're making use of your body shape.

I'll give you some honest concrit:
The bodypaint looks uneven, practice a few times before the con and make sure to seal it, so it won't stain people/things/your clothes and wig and it also won't run if you sweat.

Remember to paint every part where she's supposed to have the whatever skin color she has ( I haven't seen the pilot episode, I assume you will need to paint neck/shoulders/hands too).

Wear your wig right, it seems to be pulled foward too much. Remember to check if the sides are aligned with your ears and style the wig. There are several good tutorials on youtube.
If you're scared of cutting way too much, cut it a little longer than you intend to and try it on. Then you can slowly shorten it or just wear it a little more to the back of your head (careful not to expose your roots)

Remember to do contouring and paint your eyebrows too ( if you need them painted). I know amethyst has a round face, but it will make you looks better in pics.
When you color your skin other shades and colors, there's the risk of looking like you lost the volumes and curves in your features.

Yeah that was my first time putting it on, I was gonna buy another thing of it so I can practice some. I saw about contouring in a Homestuck tutorial, I'm probably gonna go out and get eyeshadow for it next week. How would you suggest I do my eyebrows? They're thick and dark, do they make white eyebrow pencils, or is there something I could use the same way?

And I got some gloves so I don't get paint everywhere, but they're too dark, my mom suggested fading them via sunlight, do you think that would be good? How long would that take? I have a little less than a month.(I tried, but that's the closest I could find to the right color).

looking at the pic, her eyebrows seem to be thin. You could try that brow erasing/covering, totally or only partially before painting your skin. That way you can re-draw them to look more like amethyst's.
But it can me a little dangerous, since you may end up looking like a drag queen, so I'd recommend you test it at home.

About the gloves, there's a homestuck tutorial flying around that teaches how to make arm socks, it will definitely look much better and it's easier to find a better color or dye it.

The blue I found in JoAnn's suitings section, it's polyester I think?. The silver is actually lining fabric, and then I adhered it with Heat n Bond, then satin stitched the edges.

But you can do appliques with most fabrics using heat n bond to help stabilize.

I started working on these patches 6 years ago and thought I might as well finish them up now.
Been working on the American flag over the last few evenings. Only missing the white stripes, and then I need to fix the red stripes and then I can move on to the next flag.

Once it's all done, I just need to fix the edges. I'm kind of liking it now.

Welp, I started painting my mobile Ginn. I decided to make it the Miguel custom colors. I also started painting a few of the other parts but still need to finish seems on the parts with EVA foam. The plan is make all the weapons, the sword, the rifle, the leg rockets. Might not make all of them in time for fanime but i at least aim to finish the sword and rifle. The custom shield that also comes with the suit I probably won't make because of weight issues and laziness. The color is slightly off but it was the closest I could find in a flat spray can, I wanted to avoid gloss at all costs.

Anon I hope that this doesn't sound weird but your body type is adorable! You have really nice legs and hips honestly. I'm not very familiar with the character but it looks like your skin paint might be a little too dark. If at all possible, try and get a lighter shade of purple and do a full test on half of your face before the con. You can also try to do some light contouring with a slightly darker purple (maybe eyeshadow?) just to give your face some more depth (skin paint likes to make faces look a bit flatter than they are sometimes)

Your cosplay looks adorable so far though and I'm sure that you won't look like shit! But yeah I'd recommend changing up that skin paint a bit so you can be an even more perfect Amethyst! Good luck anon!

Working on some helmets for an astronaut type cosplay. This is my first time working with foam, so I'm proud of how it's turning out (With exception to the excess hot glue oozes)

CC welcomed :)

Lesson of the day: always clean out your molds when switching casting colours, no matter how perfectly clean it seems

Looks like I'll have to throw out a bunch of these, such a waste of perfectly good resin

I'm sad you're gonna throw that out, it looks so pretty even with the imperfection. I feel like you put a small gem on that blemish and use it for some cute accessories or something
