I'm reorganizing my kitchen atm to make space. Not very cute but ikea has these undershelf baskets for $4 a piece. You just slide them onto the shelves.

Could be useful for closets since you can link them together. Can probably hold some accessories like hair bows.

I haven't read her book--only the blurbs--but I used to aspire to minimalism so I am familiar with the "if it isn't useful or beautiful, get rid of it" philosophy. I think even if you don't want to live in a cluttered space that cluttered room pics can be visually interesting. We can also glean inspiration from these photos by taking aspects we like to apply to our own spaces--for instance, I wouldn't want shelves overburdened like pic related, but I like these colors together and I like the lines of the wooden furniture.

Ahhh I totally get what you mean. I think part of it is that I tried to keep adding to my room without thinking of how much it got in the way of my actual useful items, which I collected for like 6 years... I recently went through and threw away more than 10 bags of garbage, and even more stuff that I donated or sold.

Actually I converted a shelf on my bookshelf to storage for my accessories and jewelry, which looks vaguely cluttered but I can see all of my choices at a glance and it's all things I like and wear often.

(Btw I spent like a week reading blurbs and interviews before I read the book, it's a good grasp of what the book is but I also super recommend the book itself)

I've liked what I've read about her book. Right now I've just moved back in with my parents to save money and help take care of my grandmother so I've had to downsize, but once I move out again I may pick it up as a way to keep off clutter.

For me I've enjoyed downsizing in the past since I really dislike cleaning and I find having to move a bunch of knickknacks every week to dust is just burdensome. Having less stuff means having less things to have to take care of, clean, and worry about--I find owning less to be very freeing.

I thought draping cloths would be easy, seems like you could take them out, beat the dust out, wash it, then drape it back on whatever you were using it on to keep the dust off.

Instead of looking for boxes that are already cute and colourful, I'm going to suggest sticking with your current boxes, and sticking some vinyl wallpaper decals on them. Most of them can be wiped clean and are okay with a bit of water, they're easy to apply again anyway if one happens to fall off completely. If you coordinate your box colour and your vinyl sticker it's pretty much as good as a cutesy printed box, and the added bonus is that you can coordinate your whole room by adding a few to your other furniture/your walls.

If you don't use the items a lot, then putting a hat or jewellery arrangement on hatstand/jewellery tree is like inviting dust to settle on top of them directly. A dresser seems like a better solution for the hats, though you will still have to clean the drawers out every once in a blue moon (if you're honestly not opening the drawer for months on end, though, you might want to think about getting rid of that hat)

I know you said you didn't wanna get permanent furniture while you were still at uni in >>8252084, but you can get small a cheap chest of drawers from IKEA or somewhere (the kind that's not even real wood) and wallpaper it so it looks cute. You can sometimes even get away with using wrapping paper. I did that to some made of MDF that I got in a second-hand shop for really cheap, and they came out looking cute.

I've had success getting cute suitcase storage box things on eBay like pic related, but they were kinda expensive, I definitely wouldn't buy them to replace all the boxes you've got, but maybe for your three most commonly-used accessory things? So get the cute boxes to keep your hair accessories, neck accessories, and hand and wrist accessories in somewhere where you can easily reach them, and leave your wigs and waist ties and infrequently used wigs etc in boring shoeboxes under your bed.

>> No.8260575

>>8260178
It's not easy with the layout of my room, because if I have a cloth draped over, say, a table or a shelf, I have to remove all the shit that's on that shelf and put it somewhere before I can remove the cloth for cleaning. Given that they get dusty within a couple of weeks, it's actually really impractical.

I hadn't thought of vinyl decals though, I might try that for some of the boxes containing utensils and shit. I'm also trying to make what kitchen stuff I do own prettier. Like, I accidentally broke my last bowl the other day, and when I went out to buy bowls to replace them I made sure I bought ones with a nice pattern that'd look cute stacked on a shelf rather than just plain ones that'd detract from the room. I don't think I have space for another dresser though.

Ah, I usually use the draping cloths on things or areas that I won't touch for a while, like a sewing machine I might not use for a couple of months, or the tops of really high cupboards.

If you're talking about a table with a lot of little things, eg makeup table with little compacts and tubes and things, get a basket or organizer or box, that way you can just sweep all the stuff on the table into the basket, wipe the table, and then leave the stuff in the basket. Obviously doesn't work for laptops and computers, but at least you can handle the little pens and pencils more easily than moving them around every time you want to wipe the table.

Light colors (in general--furniture, decor, etc). Loft bed. You can fit a desk or dressed underneath one. Large mirrors make a space seem bigger, too. If you want to display stuff, build shelves at level with the loft bed (play with which wall best fits it). When you can't build out, build up, generally speaking.

This, but pushed to on side. On the empty wall by the dresser, put a pop-up table. Pop down would probably be better because then it would just latch to the wall and you can pull it down. This way it is out of the way of the dresser as well. Then a chair to the far corner of the other side of the room. You can put it up on the step area when you need it and pull the desk down when you need to do work.

Get storage containers for under your bed, then get a bed skirt.
If you can't drill into walls (like me) you can use 3M sticky hooks! I hang my petticoats up as decorations like this as opposed to my dresses, but even if you're not Lolita you can find cute things to hang up that won't weight a tonne. I also hang up my coats this way, so its storage and kinda cute.

Any furniture you get now is best to be tall, narrow and free standing.
I even got myself a tall and narrow teapot because of my room space (not as small as yours but smaller than average).

I dont know what you need to store, but if you're on a budget, thrifting for pretty hat boxes and tins and stuff that suit your theme (or you can paint them) you can make stackable storage. I used to collect 80s My Little Pony so I repurposed an old CD rack to be a shelf to house them. Again, it was tall, narrow, and free standing.

I recently redid my room. I posted in room inspo threads a few times looking for advice, mostly with my hoarding, which had gotten severe to the point that I was finding things like leghold traps and bladed things in my bed.

I know it's still not amazing. My furniture is mismatched because nearly every piece is hand-me-down, the room itself is tiny, and I need something up on my walls. But thanks for your help, seagulls. I was able to get rid of maybe 60% of my possessions, and now my living space is organized and livable. I actually feel relaxed in my room, and not antsy.

If anyone can point me in the direction of cutesy decor that would fit, I'm all ears. Particularly interested in wall decor and maybe a cute mousepad.

Sorry the before picture is so tiny, all I could find on my computer was from my webcam. Trust me when I say it was filthy and I could not safely walk across my floor.

My tank actually needs serious help right now. Everything was doing fine, I've been testing my water parameters and everything, the tank was cycled, but after buying a few Petsmart fish last week, I'm having mass tank death. I checked everything. Ammonia is 0 ppm, nitrates and nitrites are 0 ppm, chlorine is 0 ppm, pH is 7.2, temperature is high (81 degrees) but not too high for guppies. I'm really at a loss. The only thing I can think of is some rapidly spreading disease. My khuli loaches are all fine, but my cory cats and guppies have taken a major hit.

Funny story, Marineland was bought out by Tetra a few years ago and so their conditioners are basically just recolors of the stuff you see in the yellow bottles, and it's all pretty lame shit. Sorry to hear about the fish loss, how's the water hardness? I'm assuming it's pretty soft since you've got sand and plants, and it may be too soft for everybody but the loaches (who tend to prefer softer water anyway). Also, if you're using tap water as opposed to RO or other filtered water, depending on where you live you may have things like arsenic and flouride in the water that can harm small and sensitive fish in high doses (and Prime usually does a good job of keeping that stuff in check).

Posting cool room pictures to keep fishchat semirelevant.

It's soft, 75 ppm, but not insanely soft. I could add a little baggie of crushed coral to the filter to harden it a bit if I need to.

Never thought of the tap water as a possible culprit. There is flouride in my county's water. As of 2013, no arsenic detected in our water.

I've been considering poisoning as a possible cause, but I don't spray anything in my bedroom, and I rinse my hands/arms before screwing with my tank.

Try Tromso or Stora, both list floor-to-bed-base as 167cm, which is just tall enough for me. You're not going to be able to find off-the-rack loft beds for tall people since they're mostly designed to fit into a room with regular height with enough space on top for a person to lie down and maybe flop about, so there is a height limit.

As for lack of desk/cupboard, I believe they give you the freedom to arrange whatever you want underneath. Some people want a desk under their loft bed, some people want a sofa and couch.

I tend to hide a lot of my clutter in boxes. Things like CDs and DVDs which (in my opinion) don't look that pretty on shelves I keep in those cute fold-up cardboard storage boxes from Ikea. I also keep larger books in magazine holder things too (provided they fit).

As for your room I'd probably start by painting the wooden furniture black or white. If you can't paint the walls, try getting some of those vinyl wall decals, a lot of them are good for a gothic theme (chandeliers and whatnot).
If possible maybe browse yard sales for some cheap paint-able furniture. I'd probably get rid of the cheap-looking plastic drawer unit and small dresser by the bed and replace them with a large dresser and small nightstand respectively. This would give you some more storage space for clothes, etc.
Also a few framed pieces of art or posters would really liven up your walls.
Some curtains would look good too, maybe a simple black/white damask pattern. You have a nice large window but it looks naked.
You can use whatever colors you like or course, but I think starting with a somewhat neutral base makes it easier to accessorize later and you seem to have a lot of black items already.

It's pretty easy to pick a colour combo that's neutrals + pastels. For eg if he really likes beiges and warm brown, light blue is a good match that's not too girly. If he likes dark brown, yellow and mint are good colours to lighten things up. Only issue is if you really want pink in the kitchen/living room, it's doable with very light pink and grey, but it seems to be difficult to get certain types of guys to agree to anything pink.

If he has stressed being practical as a "style", keep the overall look minimalistic and clean, with as little embellishments as possible.

That doesn't mean the whole space is entirely his style. Add back your shabby chic and cute in little controlled touches, for eg you can wallpaper the insides of the cupboards with a cutesy print. Display some cute things (eg, cute plates and dishes) on an open shelf. Hang a rilakkuma/Hello Kitty pancake pan more prominently than your other pans. Repaint your kitchen aid if you feel up to it (there's a tutorial or two out there somewhere). Have adorable salt shakers or a totoro tissue box cover. Just keep it contained in some designated areas and not let the cute splerge out all over the room.

The other thing to think about is that even though it's a shared space, some of it is going to be spaces you use more often, and some will be his spaces, and those should be decorated accordingly. For eg if you're always the one cooking and he's always the one washing up, then you get to add cuteness to the stove area according to your taste, and let him keep the sink area completely cute-free.

Maybe bother make a list of different things you like. Maybe event get a couple decorating magazines and go through them together.

My husband and I like to walk through ikea and point out different things we like. Especially in places like the kitchen area. Especially since we plan to buy a fixer upper house. It's a good idea in advance that we know each other's taste so it makes shopping for everything easier.

They're at pretty much any fabric store, just ask about "dress forms". Some, like pictured, are adjustable in size.

I'm in the middle of cleaning out a spare room to make a sewing/craft room.
I'm not really sure where to start though?

Also I can't pick a color scheme. I like pink and it'd be really cute + there are a lot of pink things on taobao... but I also really like lavender/black combination.
Any ideas?

So I was gonna ask if anyone had any ideas re: where to get cute office chairs (lol) or, at least, in colours that'd fit well with a pastel or pale/white theme. I googled around and found a few cream leather chairs for decent prices which weren't bad, but I also found this tutorial for customising an existing chair. Might prove inspirational:

http://www.howjoyful.com/2011/08/desk-chair-transformation/

I have a black "leather" ikea chair similar to the one in the tut, it's had a alot of heavy use since '09 and is looking a bit knackered as well as not really meshing with the rest of my bedroom decor. Was gonna buy a new chair but now I might just try customising it instead.

The area across from this. I have a pretty big room. :| I would decorate it more cute which I plan to in July, but for now Im lazy as hell about it. Saving up for conventions. First time I am going to do is either painted the walls a soft green or accent one wall green and the others be white. Im tired of these stupid butterflies.
