I really, really love Oldschool! I've been a lolita for 2 years now (such a babby) and Ive really begun to appreciate Oldschool styling's so much. My wardrobe is starting to turn into a bit of a museum as I've started collecting pieces to just put in plastic and appreciate. I feel like this is a bit of a weird thing to say but I feel that lolita is starting to get to a point that if older pieces keep getting sold and worn and sold and worn over and over again they will soon disintegrate and we will lose our history a bit. That's why I've started collecting.

Seconding this, I have l348 and its ridiculously high-quality for Bodyline, really nice lace. Sometimes I think an A-line petti would fit the skirt better though, but I don't have one so I can't check.

Recommend you get the socks from somewhere other than Bodyline as they'll have more old-school lace.

I don't think it's making a revival, but with those old style dresses BABY is re releasing you never know.
I've never liked modern Lolita, I feel in love with the style right when OTT sweet was getting so popular so I was exposed to a lot of old school and new school stuff, but it was always the older, more simple outfits I feel in love with.

Well, black and white oldschool is what inspired the anime lolitas that inspire a lot of lolita cosplay, but really it's very different.

The most consistent difference is the silhouette - skirts aren't as puffy in oldschool. Virtually everything is plain or non-print solid colour dresses accented with (usually white) lace, whereas today prints are the most popular and you see alternate materials like chiffon. Coloured shoes are rarely seen (except occasionally red), and whatever colour the JSK or dress the lolita is wearing, it's usually coordinated either with black or white blouses and tights and shoes and bags, not the rainbow of colours we have access to now.

I'm not sure if I'd go as far as to say 'revival' but 'renewed interest' at the very least seems accurate. Along with brands continuing to release some of their classic dresses etc, I think newer lolitas are becoming more aware of and interested in lolita fashion history. The older lolitas, in part related to the renewed interest, also seem to be experiencing pangs of nostalgia, especially considering how much lolita fashion has changed/evolved over the years.

I find all the trends and changes within the fashion interesting and rather like some of the almost high fashion appearance of some of the stuff coming out now. For me though, I'll always have a soft spot for old-school, since that was the style around when I first discovered and fell in love with the fashion. It also felt a bit more rebellious in the beginning in all honesty - I almost feel like for some people, it may have held similar weight and appeal as say, punk and goth movements did back in the day when they first started to develop and emerge. Having said this, I think the fact that lolita fashion isn't really associated with a particular style of music or clear-cut ideology, has actually helped aid its survival and I can't see it burning out any time soon. I honestly love seeing new generations interested in the fashion and I do try to keep the 'before it was cool' and 'mah subculture' faggotry on my part to a minimum, but I still can’t deny the thrill that came with finding something shiny and new that appealed in such a big way to my heart and mind.

I think the passing of time has allowed people to delve back into the best of old-school, leaving the more questionable stuff behind. I also think early lolitas probably overdosed on the blackxwhite stuff and so welcomed the changes taking place; but it's like now with the decade+ offering perspective, it's possible to see beauty in these styles all over again, and enjoy what made them some appealing in the first place.

I haven't had time since I posted that, but I'll post anything I find when I get a chance, no guarantees I'll have much though, I'm busy with other stuff right now.

I know what you mean, it's so hard to find something new since people aren't wearing this kind of stuff anymore. That's why I started digging in the first place.

I still dress like it's 2007 ha ha, so I've been needing to find some inspiration that actually fits in with the way I wear my clothes.

Or that old lady who dies, disinterested grandchildren come to clean out home, find treasure trove of lolita, *reads will*: "donate to Kyoto Costume Institute".

I wan't to save up to get my hands on some legendary pieces. If each person who has bought a single piece wears it "once" (more like 3-4times) and sells it once a year, pieces like Iron Gate and Puppet Circus (which are coming up on 10 years old) could have had between 30 -40 wears! Dry cleaning and washing also reduces the life of the pieces (Puppet Circus is velvet too so it might go/ start going bald).

I don't know, I just think it would be a shame for the new lolitas of 2020 and onwards to not be able to see what came before.

Don't forget people who don't know how/can't be bothered to clean things correctly, and worn-out seams, fraying, tears, and stains that have set in from not being removed promptly. God knows how many of the old iconic pieces in decent condition we'll have left by 2020.

I have a BtSSB JSK from 2001 and I'm pretty sure the only reason that it's still in almost-new condition is because it's really unflattering and thus spared the trials of being worn.

This is a bit of a long shot, but do you think that if I started collecting pieces to show people I'm serious about preserving our history and not just trying to get more burando (10-15 dresses), it would be worth making up a 'go fund me' to help fund the expansion of the collection/ archive? I know how go fund me has a bad rep with this community because of all the obnoxious, entitled brats who won't get a job and expect free stuff. so I don't know if I should bother.

Do you have the means to archive thrm, acid free storage materials, climate controlled storage, canvas bags, etc? Do you have a good camera with a macro lens for detailed shots, a place to photograph or film the collection so others could even see it online? Most collections/archives are at least semi-available to people. How will you create the criteria for important or significant pieces vs just things you like? Otherwise, wouldn't you just sort of be collecting things for yourself as a hobby that should be self-funded?

I bought this for really cheap on y!auction (8000-ish yen) last year and it came with a matching petti and headbow. The auction gave the garment a C rating but honestly I can't find any real flaws. It looks like it was never even worn but it is missing one of the small pin on bows from the sleeves which I guess is why it got a C rating.

I don't count the years I spent pining for Lolita but unable to afford as my Lolita years, but I was following since 2003 and then I became a Lolita in late 2006. I guess 9 years makes me an oldfag?
This was a dress that came out in 2004 btw.
Here a pic of my matching jsk (looks more blue in the pic than it actually is, it's more like the promo pic irl)
My obsession with velveteen actually only started about 4~5 years ago. You can never have too much velveteen in your wardrobe, right?

So many of the old EGL photos look absolutely horrible, but when you consider most girls were making their own clothes and probably had no sewing experience and few patterns to go off of it's understandable.

Even if so many of the outfits are really bad, I like seeing them because it's amazing to see how girls used to dress compared to how they dress now.

There won't be that many of any individual piece, but there will always be women who don't hassle with selling pieces when they move on or keep them for sentimental reasons. I got into lolita a very long time ago, and while there's been a lot of turnover in my wardrobe, I have 15 year old pieces that have only been worn a few times. I'm still fond of them, I don't need the money, and they're easy to store. (30-40 wears is not much, either, if they're taken care of and especially if they're JSKs and never really touch skin. Armpits on sleeved items are always the first thing to go, but even those can usually stand up to more than a year of weekly wear.)

I personally wouldn't care at all if someone posted pics of items in my wardrobe post, but I understand that some people might not want photos of themselves posted. All the girls I've just posted were in the old school lolita tag too, but I don't think I'll post any more. Except this, which is Peachie, who's practically a public figure anyway. This is very borderline for oldschool but it might fit what >>8241078 was looking for.

Thanks for responding you've given me lots to think about for this.

This is a long term project so the actual crowd fund probably wouldn't be for a long while yet. Years or so.

A bit of a background

>I'm currently finishing up fashion studies. I have a degree in Fine Arts Fashion from my home country and am in the next few years completing a "gothic and lolita fashion course" in japan.
>I have a Dip in business studies.
>Within the next 3 years I will be launching my lolita brand both within Japan and depending on the market, a much smaller operation in my home country.
>I plan to take a course (university or otherwise) in textiles and textile restoration.

The goal in the future would be to make the collection available to the public, probably in an adjoining area to my business (these areas will be exclusive of one another) to save on costs.

Currently:

>I have a high quality camera for garment detail imaging.
>I do not have a high quality video camera. But currently have access to film equipment.
>I do have a space for taking pictures and videos.
>I have access to website creation for the public to view pieces.
>I have a basic knowledge of caring for historical textiles (which I plan to deepen).
>I do not have access to appropriate storing facilities at this time.
>Eventually I would seek funding elsewhere once the project is off the ground, if it gets off the ground.

I don't know how to approach categorising significant pieces at the moment. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How far into this project do you think I will have to be before seeking crowd funding or other funding? Should I have the complete set up already? Or should I be nearing a complete set up and try and get help for the few remaining expensive parts?

Thanks for your input.

I'm trying to make a very oldschool-feeling coordinate with l348, do you think this looks good? I wanted a long-sleeved blouse so I used l160, since the JSK will hide the ugly shirring. I'm unsure whether, since I have a long-sleeved black blouse, I should have just used all-black socks rather than black and white. Pic stolen from a wardrobe post as it's the only place I could find the blackxwhite colourway without that stripy bow, which I don't like.

>I don't know how to approach categorising significant pieces at the moment

Part of this will be looking into Japanese and International lolita chatroom/board archives and figuring out what pieces people have reached consensus on achieving iconic status. Stuff like Iron Gate and Puppet Circus, or the Baby's Elizabeth OP set.

Or you might look at trends like AP's OTT sweet boom from the late 2000's, and pick out the easily recognizeable pieces from that, Sugary Carnival, Milky Planet, etc.

>>8243749
TBH I wouldn't donate to a project like this unless it was being run by or associated with a legitimate museum, like the V&A archives or something. A lot of people treat lolita as a collection hobby. A lot of people like the clothes and barely wear them in practice. It still seems like it'd just be other people funding your collection hobby, even if you weren't wearing the dresses.

>>8243775
Agree with this on the subject of iconic/easily recognisable dresses.

>> No.8243791

Ok thanks. I think a nice spread of iconic pieces and non-iconic from year to year will be good for the collection and pieces will need to be rotated in and out of storage to prolong their lifespans. Thanks.

There was a Grand Corset Ball recently, funded via kickstarted with proceeds going to make a corset museum type space for someone's collection but they have the collection already. With you being inexperienced enough in lolita to not know which pieces to choose and with the fund-sucking endeavors of finishing your education, a trans-global relocation and a business startup, I'd also be unlikely to donate until you had these accomplished. Maybe better to get your business going, with the space you described and archival and storage/display secured, THEN ask for financial or even older dress donations from a curated list when you are more knowledgable. You could also make a poll/survey regarding the most significant pieces and get opinions meanwhile to start deciding how to plan the collection.

Well, Bodyline's sale's on now so go for it anons! I have it in bxw and I love it. Only thing I find awkward is the elasticated shoulder straps, the weight of the dress pulls them down while they're on a hanger and I'm scared they'll stretch out.

>> No.8243923

Did the black fade onto the white trim any through washings? I hang my bxb version over the hanger until the hanger bar sits at the waist, secure in the middle with a clothespin. That keeps the straps from stretching.

I can't justify buying another dress right now, otherwise I would for sure because I really love that dress and I think it's very well made. I don't have a lot of closet room and I only wear Lolita a handful of times a year (would love to wear it more but it just never seems to work out, I'm going to try harder to wear it more often) so I don't want to collect more dresses than I'll actually be able to wear. It's starting to become a problem because I keep seeing dresses that I'm falling in love with, but I have to be realistic.

I was afraid of the sleeves stretching out too, but I hung it up on a hanger anyway. They are a little stretched out but it's not terrible. I think it would be easy to shorten the straps if they wear out too much.

>>8243923
I didn't think of clipping it to the hanger while folded over so the pressure isn't on the sleeves. I regret not thinking a little harder about how to hang it now.

This thread made me go and try on one of my old BtSSB dresses that no longer fit me. I have been trying to lose weight and I haven't but my boyfriend said I was looking smaller so I figured I would give it a try, and it fit!

It used to not be able to zip past my ribcage but now it zips up all the way comfortably! It still looks a little boobloaf-y but not bad. I guess I have lost fat and gained muscle? Either way this was a nice ego boost for me and I really needed it. Thank you old school thread.

This whole conversation made me laugh a bit.

>Girl comes on and talks about what is probably an important topic to be discussed.
>Politely pitches an idea, and is open to criticism, critique and advice.
>Has the credentials to actually execute the idea.
>Basically volunteers to fund most of a project that is aimed at giving back to the Community through pretty much donating legendary pieces to a public space.
>People say "come back when your a museum"
>"Come back when you have backing from a wold renowned museum" (what planet are you from that you think a one person operation, building a collection of lolita will have the V&A interested?)
>We wont support your collecting hobby!
>That said keep your collecting hobby until your a museum then we might visit.

This girl is basically asking how far into this project she would have to be for people to start taking her seriously and start contributing to it. Not hurr durr, need money for burando.

Mfw this is why we can't have nice things!

OP personally I would start taking this project seriously and start donating when you had about 15- 25 pieces documented and posted for public viewing on a dedicated website or something of the like. Must have high quality videos and pictures, must have at least 2 significant pieces. Also I don't think you should just go for legendaries that doesn't really give an accurate representation of the times, but by all means include them. I would also include any literature you can find.

If I was to donate I would like my money to go towards storage facilities and bags etc. That's some thing you will definitely need to start getting this off the ground.

I think you should go for it, if it doesn't work out someone else may take the reins, or just sell up your collection.

Good luck!

I actually miss AP's old strawberry all-over prints and their earlier, plainer cake/pastry prints.
