So I want to make a JSK from ONS, but it has a shirring panel for the back.

So should I just draft a back piece? or shorten the shirring piece? I'm gonna stick a zipper in the side seam.

>>8203106
It isn't as strong and doesn't always allow you as much stretch but yes, it is easier to do. I think it tends to look a little messier because the zigzag stitching will rarely turn out even, but if you're not selling it and it's just for you, fuck it, it's good enough. However, if you're selling it or want something to really last, I highly suggest the channel method. It isn't THAT much more work.

>>8203084
Personally, I love fur. I only buy vintage because I hate to support the fur trade by buying new, so my collection is sort of small, but as long as there aren't little faces on it, I love it.

I think it's just that she has a large jaw and I doubt there's much you can do about it. I adore her as well, though, she's so elegant and even though most of her dresses are very simple in design, her material choices are always on point and she coords them perfectly.

>> No.8203139

>>8203084
I'm totally fine with vintage fur. If the piece is well-kept and high quality, there isn't anything that can substitute a fur stole or muffler or whatever. Otherwise, they get kind of weird or creepy. I found one at goodwill that had a great body but the face was all shitty, so I'm going to cut off the face and the legs.

OH, the channel method makes so much sense to me, wow, I never thought of going at it like that??
I think it must be used mainly in lolita pieces bc that's the only stuff that comes up when I search it. Also this is nice because I was a lil bummed about not being able to line the shirred part. I'm happy with the zig zags for this current piece, but I'll definitely try that other method in the future! Man I just. Feel very silly but also intrigued!! (like I said I'm a nerd)

Also glad you like my fabric for otome! I'm definitely not going for lolita at all.

Fit it, having shirring on something that buttons on the front, such as vests and blouses, tends to pull the buttons and cause gapping unless it's made to fit you with the shirring unstretched, in which case why have the shirring? If you're wary of the fit, always follow the number 1 and 2 rules:
1. Make a muslin first
2. measure the pattern pieces, ignore the envelope which is almost always wrong.

Looks darn good for a first attempt. I prefer the channel method myself. I them between the lining and outer fabric of the bodice. I think it looks cleaner then the zig zag method and allows for more control and easier alteration of you need to change the fit. If you arn't planning on lining the garment you can also make channels for shirring with satin ribbon.

For just starting out her stuff is pretty good. The color combos and trim additions are really on point, do she is really ahead of the game here. My fingers do itch to help her alter her bodice patterns though. She does have plenty of room in the items to be able to alter them in the future when she figure out fit better. It can be a steep learning curve.

I make my items simpler because I wear them casually as everyday peices.

>Your work is really beautiful! Where do you find your fabrics? They're all great picks- any tips for choosing fabrics?
Thankyou. First if like to make it clear when it comes things I make for my own wardrobe I am an obsessive penny pincher. So basically in my mind you don't need to buy the fanciest fabrics to make good Lolitas clothes.

First look at tons and tons of coords, stock photo's ,ect. Saturate your brain with them. Figure out what you like about things that appeal to you. Also don't focus to much on particulars about what you are looking for. You aren't going to find Ap border prints at the local fabric store.

If you are thinking of buying a print think about how it will look in a dress. Imagine how big a Lolita skirt is and how the print will look from 5 to ten feet away. I once made a dress from the prettiest lily of the valley print fabric and wrote it to otakon. When I looked at the photos after the convention the lilies looked exactly like ears of corn when veiwed from a few feet away.

But really it's more figuring out what style of dress or skirt will look best with the fabric you found. Making truely the best of what you have.

I'm hoping to have chiffon in it, but the lace selection at all my local craft stores is atrocious so I figured I'd knit or crochet my own. I do them by hand. I cut out a rounded rectangular peice of cardboard about as big as my calf. Carefully streach the socks or stockings over it and use sitches like satin or stem stitch. Basically anything you can work on the "right" side of the fabric.

>>8204554
If you are selling them do not embroider then by hand. There is no way you could charge enough to make that worth while. Totally not worth it.

>>8204593
Heavy interfacing (double up?) or needlepoint plastic can stand in for buckrum if you can't find anything else.

>>8207688
In my experience unless you are going to be making more then one of them doing something custom on an embroidery machine takes as much time as doing it by hand. Custom patterns need to be digitized which in is super tedious. Of course maybe I'm just slow at it.

What are you planning on using it for? So far as ordinary jumpers go, it looks pretty good, the sizing seems to fit your body.

If you're planning on using it for something like fairy kei, then making it out of cute pastel fabric, and shortening the skirt to about thigh high, about the right length to wear a leg avenue petticoat, would help.

If it's lolita, then yeah, the skirt's a bit too narrow, most of the brand ones can actually fit a light petticoat underneath it. If you don't have enough fabric, how about doing box pleats with a contasting colour inside the pleats like pic?

That, and the skirt should be shortened until it's a couple of inches above your knee (it looks a little frumpy now, and might get frumpier when the skirt gets poofier)

That dress isn't exactly "plain", there's pintucks, lace and ribbons all over it, and where the border decorations usually go, it's already made out of eyelet lace fabric.

If you really want to add gold to the dress, it might be easier to replace some of the existing bows with gold ones, or add it as jewellery.

If you really need to embroider something for this dress, you could try embroidering invidual patches and then applique them to the dress. Some butterflies appliqued to the bottom-most tier, the top part of the bodice and a few more in the headdress would work pretty well, I think.
