Nothing really new for me in this build as far as tricks go. This wont have lights or fans or anything but the faceplate is magnetically attached. Its easily removable to see better & eat/drink that kind of thing, but that's pretty much standard on all my helmets now.

My advice in general is to be patient and smooth out and sand everything to make it as clean as possible. Go back as many times as it takes to fill in and fix all the little errors. A large part of this helmet was made by a friend with my instruction helping him along but he totally floundered on the cleanup stage and Ive spent the past few days bringing it up to my usual standard.

The only parts I usually fiberglass are parts that need to be especially strong like the torso or Alt-Eisens giant lower legs. I could do the whole suit in this fashion to make it stronger, but I try to keep weight low and not expose myself to too much fiberglass dust since I live and work in an apartment.

I score the PVC with a razor knife to get it to fold the way I want. For rounded parts I just use a large amount of tape to pull the part in the right direction and keep tension on it until the glue cures.

I don't think Bondo is that bad to work with sanding wise. What's your process?

>> No.8197163

>>8197151
Well My friend and I put it over the plaster gauze and tried to smooth it out as best as we could, and then tackled it with a rotary sander and 60 grit sandpaper

...before we both became completely terrified of the sander (It accidentally launched a thick piece of bondo at my leg and left a cut) and I started hand-sanding it with 60, 100, 220 and 300 grit. We did it a bit thick in places so I guess that's why I was having difficulty with it.

The one on the left is the Bondo'd one, the one on the right just has the plaster gauze. There's still some spaces to fill on the left one and I considered just doing a couple coats of primer to fill it. It's really smooth though.

8197240

>>8197163

Sounds to me like the brittle plaster might be the weak link here? I can see why the movement of a rotary sander would shatter it, leaving nothing for the bondo to bond-o to. Then again, I might not be picturing your materials or structure correctly.

I made pic related by a process of craft foam , heavy duty paper mache (1/4 inch thick, made of cardstock and watered down wood glue), then bondo, then fiberglass . The bondo sanded like a dream over the paper mache. In my experience plaster is really fragile, and it looks like your pieces are going to get a lot of wear and tear as clunky boots.

My boots held my weight through two full conventions of wear before I retired them due to paint failure--the fiberglass and paper mache were holding strong. (Don't try to paint black vinyl white...)

I can also imagine that a poorly mixed batch could yield unusually brittle bondo.

>> No.8197263

>>8197240
Yeah, we started the boot in posterboard and covered it in the plaster to give it extra strength, but it is a bit brittle. Your boot looks really nice though! I don't have very much experience with Fiberglass, does it work as a filler?

>> No.8197330

>>8197263

It is not a filler. That's what bondo is sold for. Fiberglass should lay flat over what you set it on. Resin is runny and will drip off, that's why you squeegee it. It doesn't fill in dents and cracks and cure there.

I've only made like 2 props with it, so my knowledge is limited. That's kinda why my boots are sort of lumpy up close.

I just kind of assumed you'd go for fiberglass next because I feel like your materials so far would be pretty fragile without something holding it all together on the outside. I'm just concerned about plaster on pieces that actually probably will have to bear some weight and take a lot of bumping into things.

If you do go this route, make sure to thoroughly research safety procedures. Nothing about fiberglass is kind except the end product.

And I'm thinking a lot about your project because I wanna do peridot too, haha. I like seeing your progress!

Loose the filter, and when you do actually wear this, despite the characters actual complexion, don't paint your skin yellow. It makes you look sickly.

As for the costume, look into getting a leather jacket. Raz didn't wear, is that velvet? You'll also have to get something stronger for the buckle. Some air dry clay coated with gesso and paint will work much better. and since it won't be flat, you could make the strap more like an actual strap.

thankyou! i altered a hat to make it, it's a military gi cap like in pic (tho the one i have doesn't have metal, it's stitched)

i cut the back of the hat off (not including the top) where his hairline starts, then took a piece of thicker black fabric and sewed it to the sides and glued it on around the rim. then took a piece of posterboard (the thick kind with foam in it), and cut it into the same shape/size as top and glued it in to get the flat top.

then with the "hairline" i took wefts that matched the wig and started laying them a bit before the black starts and wraping it around gluing it to the black fabric bit by bit with tacky glue. did the same to the other side and brought both ends together and styled them into a point in the back. that way i can take the hat on and off with the wefts and keep the wig in tact and use a different hat if wanted. any time i take the hat off i just restyle the wig to blend with the fake wefts. sorry if this is tl;dr or hard to understand ahah. ;;

I personally don't mind the yellow, but I think it would look better if you increased the amount of orange shading around the eyes, cheekbone, jawline, and the outside of your face. Be sure to blend really well. Part of the problem with a lot of body/face paint costumes is when people don't bother to contour/shade with different colours; it shows up really flat in photos. I can see you have a bit of orange there, but try to use it to accentuate the features of your face a bit more so that it doesn't look like a 2D drawing.

Also you're cute and remind me of Eddie Redmayne.

A couple of whopper poppers would be great If I could attach them without sewing but I don't want to sew into the craft foam of the tops more than I have to. I see what you mean with the velcro, though. I attached it male side out and it's already causing tiny snags- I'm storing it with some of the female side to shield it when it's not being worn now.

>>8204280
Yeah, I noticed that too. Unfortunately there's not much I can do about it without starting over completely or destroying the base shoe. Padding out my ankle didn't seem to work either. It stinks because everything else about the shape of the shoe is right. Live and learn, I guess.

I'd even try to find an eyeliner pencil in medium-dark orange (like a burnt orange colour) to use on your eyelids area. You look a little like a lemon with two marbles popped in right now, but lining your eyes in a darker colour will prevent your eyes from disappearing into your face (you see how Raz in >>8198087 has dark orange shadows over the tops of his eyes and in the bottom outside corners?).

hate to say it but looking at the source material, the lace in the actual costume design looks a bit different... the bottom edge is longer than the top edge, which I think looks better than this. It hangs a little bit better. Plus the fabric used for the trim is too thin so it's kind of see through which makes it look even cheaper than the cheap character design. The trim really does look pretty bad. The dress itself looks fine though.

not sure what fabric you're using, but did you try interfacing the fabric of the tentacle before turning it inside out? and then ironing it again? you'll definitely want the two strips sewn (that way you can get the colour of the underside of it too, plus it won't look so sadly droopy), worst comes to worst you can always put heat n bond inside and then iron from the outside

I haven't done the ears or tail yet. Still making staples which, Ive done 1 of them out of... 8. These are probably the most annoying. I dont think I will do the face. I can't sew well enough to attach it on to actually look good. I would have to hot glue it like I did the awful flames I made down the center. I figured brown wig with my flame contacts that are coming in and some fangs and I would be the bear instead of the bear all in one being the kigu.

Im wearing boots in the photo which is kind of hard to see, but I do need to make the leg area a little more baggy. I dont know what happened, but the calf holes are super tight. Im going to attempt to widen those so its more comfortable. Im hoping that doing that will help it look more straight down and baggy. Thank gawd Tibbers is supposed to be a broken sort of bear, so some mistakes are alright..? Im just kind of going with that as an excuse for my shotty sewing.

From the side it look okay.

>> No.8244053

Ahh I bet the contacts and fangs will be cute! And yeah making all the bandages and staples is a pain, you could probably get away with one layer of fleece for the bandages. Also try not to use hot glue for stuff in the future... it'll peel off, or even melt if it's hot outside. At least use fabric glue next time you're in a hurry!

Your calf area is too tight because your tapered your pattern down to the foot hole. You want keep your patter wide, and then use elastic on the cuff to draw it in. Don't feel bad though, everytime I touch uo my pattern I end up widening shit. Kigus are never too baggy haha. Also fleece tends to hide seams somewhat. Just add a panel of extra fabric at the crotch.

Literally anyone can wear blonde. There are so many different shades of blonde. Pick one that works with your undertones.

Me again. Cosplay should be about you and how you feel. if you find a wig you like, wear it. If you aren't happy like that go all natural. You love the characters, people who aren't douchbags will see and get that. But don't Fear the blonde hair, maybe try going super cartoonish in color if that would help

People are just too lazy to click through links half the time, that's all. Your pleats are great, the shape's a little weirdly off but I have a feeling it's more mismatched petti problems than problems with the actual skirt construction, do you have any photos of it laid flat by any chance?

>> No.8247595

>>8245743
I question your fabric choice (looks like some shitty Keepsake Calico from JoAnns, and is very busy and splotchy looking) but good construction. Definitely great work for your first skirt!

It was super easy actually. I used about 3 small bottles of Angelus leather paint, lightly sponged on the first 3 layers and then brushed on thick layers after that. Can't remeber exactly how many layers, sorry!

There's nothing lolita about it. And in the future post the pics in the chat, no one wants to go to the effort of copying and pasting a url into the search bar. Makes you look like a newfag.

I haven't added any ruffles/details yet, so maybe. but i was asking about where it sits on waist, how it's fitted, and the shape. And it was several photos so i thought it'd be too bulky.

there is nothing lolita about that fabric or the shape of it either.

Compile all the photos into one if you want to post many

Got both my Wrist Cuffs done. Gotta slap dem pin tucks in em too. I'm really pleased with how well they stand up with the interfacing. 2 more to go for the legs and I'm all set!

... Then the shorts and poofy pants...

have you seen much of the country sub? floral prints everywhere.

>> No.8249558

did I say there's nothing lolita about floral prints?
Oh, no, I said there's nothing lolita about that specific print.

>> No.8249588

>>8249558
cause it's naked and bare. prints look different with trim and stuff next to it. So it's not your cup of tea, fine. but the pleat design is based off some brand stuff i've seen in person. So do please tell me more exactly what's wrong with an A line flare with 6 clean double pleats, cause I'm failing to understand. It doesn't sit low on the waist, it's not so high it's gonna give me boob loaf. Please be more exact. where is the shape going wrong?

>> No.8249613

>>8249588
the print doesn't look naked or bare. It looks cluttered and inelegant.

>> No.8249763

Ok (i do think i can make the print less offensive by using design tricks), now can you more accurately say what's wrong with its shape?

>> No.8249804

>>8249763
Not >>8249613 but it's hard to tell what is even going on with those horrible quality pictures you loaded on imgur. There is a weird doming effect going on with the skirt towards the bottom; I'm not sure if you're wearing a shitty petti or if your skirt is shit. Either way the silhouette is really off and yes, your print choice looks cheap, and no, that won't be fixed by adding ruffles. It doesn't look like you used enough fabric, either. I don't think it's poorly constructed per se, just not a lolita skirt. It looks like one of the hundreds of skirts I can buy at kohls or target for $6.
>inb4 anon replies trying to defend her handmade "lolita" skirt again

Your pleats are clean, at least. Now please stop cluttering the WIP thread begging for critiques. Either post progress or get out.

Could use a bit more dimensionality. It looks a little too flat and not bulging enough - considering it's a sword made out of literally naked women.

I guess you can sand the wings down later on though. Still, neat work. What con is this for?

>>8239440
Could use some polish and shading. Looks kinda bland.

>>8230884
Could use a dowel, or affix it with an external mount.

Or use an aluminum tube instead.

>>8208600
Yeah it's going to be a pain. I'm more scared for the sanding process. Haha, But your draping looks nice.

>>8250647
Since the sword hints the actual shape I wanted to make a clean shape before I put all the crap on it. So, the doll parts will come soon. But, I definitely agree on the right wing. It came out a lot flatter then I was hoping. But, I've been working on both sides so it's not as flat as it looks in the picture. I was hoping to finish for Momo, but maybe for Dragon.

>>8212484
This looks so clean. Did you do a stitch and ditch type thing for the vinyl? You can barely see any seams.

>>8239440
I like the shading on the bow more then the helmet. The gradients aren't as clean on your helmet. But your shapes look pretty nice. I'm looking forward to seeing how your armor comes about.

>>8234965
I agree with the other anon about the shading. I don't like airbrushing since I think it makes the shadows too heavy. It starts looking more cartoon-y then aged. The barrel shroud is okay, but the flash hider is too dark. The reason for this is that when a firearm naturally ages raised areas, like rivets and bolts, test to be the brightest parts of the whole thing. While areas just behind edges or in crevices are the ones that retain the original finish. To give it a more natural wear brighten up the rivets themselves, and brighten up the end of the flash hider, but leave the very very end edge slightly darker to simulate carbon buildup.See picture below below.
tldr: needs highlights.

I love angelus leather paint. Your boots turned out really even. A nitpick is that your moons could have been a bit more even or sanded. But, I'm sure people aren't going to be standing that close to your legs.

friend of mine is doing a female version of the Holy from Vigilante squad from the Punisher. This was my first time drafting a tailor collar pattern. I still have alot of pressing ahead of me. Welt pockets are bitches, especially the corners. I feel like i just need some better clippers since i just have some cheap ass ones. Only my second go at doing welt pockets.
I just have a pencil skirt to go with this and that's about it. She wanted me to take the lining from the floral suit that i seam ripped, and put it into this coat. I had to do alterations on the pattern as i seam ripped so i had to take that into account when i moved the lining over.
