So I've got a month till I go to a con. I don't sew often, but it's not the first time I've held a needle. I want to make a samurai costume consisting of a kimono, hakama and maybe a jinbaori vest. I've already got a fair idea of what colors I want, as well as a vector graphic of the mon I want to use.

Does anyone know where I can find a good pattern and instructions? So far my google-fu has proven too weak. Is a month enough time for an amateur?

>> No.8185817

have you googled "kimono sewing pattern" or "hakama sewing pattern" because I just did and there are a ton. Any pattern should be easy to sew though because all the seams are straight and there aren't many pieces.

Hakama and kimono are very easy to make if you have a pattern. Question becomes how traditional do you want your pattern to be? I have "no cut" kimono pattern and instructions or I have my easy 6hr kimono pattern.

Hakama are very simple as long as you have spray can starch(you can get at a fabric store) and a ironing board and iron. You need some mad pleating skills I hate hakama for this reason alone. I made 2 and then I was fucking done.

Anyways, I'll look for my patterns and post them below if I can find them. I moved cross country last year and havent been able to find a damn thing.

"no cut" version. Mind you, there is cutting involved but I think there is a way to only cut once or twice so Ive always called it that. shrug.

a little off topic, but I'm going to Japan in September and I'd really like to wear a yukata out in public at least once while there. Is that something that's done, or are yukata basically only worn for festivals (and baths)? And since summer is nearing its end, would I even be able to find stores selling yukata?

Here is my "6hr easy" kimono. Legit, fucking cut out the shapes with the listed dimensions(its in cm, give in and use them). Sew the shapes together so they look like a kimono. And thats fucking it.

I cant read the moon runes but I think its just showing you how to add a butt-pad, idk why. But also how to do the back hem so it lays flat.

Anyone happen to have a Jin-baori pattern since you guys seem to have other patterns.

Its basically like a Japanese version of a surcoat.

Like Ken Watanabe wears in the last samurai.

Here's a shot of my in progress "no cut" yukata. It was made using a yukata bolt roll which is pre-measured and shit.

You can wear fashionable yukata outside matsuri, but you'll get stares because you're a white piggu wearing one. Well, if you have light hair or long legs you'll get stares anyway. You might find outlet sales pretty much eerywhere depending on which part of september you'll be over there. Otherwise, kimono shop are all around (warning, don't pay the gaijin fee at flea markets, you can haggle it)

Actually, this is last. Its a pic of hakama made using that pattern. I didnt make these though, but the pattern was given to me from this chick so she used it.

Diff anon, IMO if you have the patience for it, the look and drape of real hakama is absolutely worth it.

The Budo Bear Designs hakama pattern is what I used when I made my first pair; this was my first solo-sewn cosplay, I was around 15-16. It's a good pattern to use if you prefer taking your measurements, and using them to create a pre-sized garment, and generally recommended for beginners to sewing traditional japanese clothing who still want something with legit construction. The instructions are thorough, and (at least when I bought it) came with a miniature paper example of what your pleats should look like.

If you're down to do the math to create hakama custom-cut to your torso circumference, the Folklore pattern is your friend. IMO I would only recommend this for someone more experienced in sewing/pleating. Folklore also has good patterns for kimono and jinbaori as well iirc.

Googling "Budo Bear Hakama" or "folklore hakama pattern" should give you the results you need. IMO as long as you have the right patterns and choose your fabrics well, traditional japanese clothing is a good way to build confidence in your sewing work!

I made mine from an edited kimono pattern, but I made the hakama pants out of wrapping paper as its pattern. I plan to remake this, but mind you this was the very first thing I had ever sewn. Probably should've stuck with something a little simpler, but I really wanted to cosplay Himeko.

[PS: I still really suck ass at sewing 5 years later]
