Any advice on getting started in otome-kei? What to buy? How to coord? Any sort of essentials?

>> No.8181790

>things that are cute and lady-like
>simple is best
>neat and 'put-together' looking
>flattering
>don't worry about being matchy-matchy, just balance

it's more about the feeling really.

>> No.8181827

I think for a beginner, starting with a dress would be better than a skirt. I feel that it's easier to get matchy matchy or fail to get the right feel with the blouse making up so much of the outfit, at least for beginners. Dress and tights are probably the easiest things to start with (along with some blouses/cardigans) since they're such strong components in a lot of outfits, and the rest you build on. Just imo.

Look up some otome blogs (sorry, I can't post any atm, but I have a bunch saved on my computer at home that I can post later) and figure out which outfits you like and why, and maybe try for something similar but not identical to those outfits for your first couple tries.

>What to buy
You'll need:
- a few blouses with varying sleeve lengths and interesting collars and details. Don't go for lolita blouses, they are too OTT generally.
- JSKs or skirts from otome brands
- Cardigans with cute details, whether it be a pattern, cute collars or buttons, embroidery, whatever.
- Nice patterned OTK socks, tights or crew socks
- Feminine but cute shoes (t-bar heels, lace up boots, loafers, mary janes, etc.) Modcloth has nice options.
- Cute structural bag (MILK heart bag for example, a Leur Getter round ribbon bag, ETC's present box bag, etc.)
- Berets, barettes and head bows
- Interesting and eclectic jewelry and accessories

>How to coord
- Minimal to no poof
- A-line silhouette generally
- Use color, patterns and texture in a bold way
- No wigs or a very natural looking wig

Look at Emily Temple Cute, Jane Marple and Leur Getter's blogs for coordinates and ideas.

Go browse around vintage shops for skirts and topwear. F21 sometimes has otome pieces, but not always. It's an American-based brand but it's actually owned by koreans and influences by asian street trends.

>> No.8184846

>>8184598
Modcloth is always mentioned and they have good legwear and blouses and occasionally dresses. Look for similar online shops that have that similar vintage-twee look.

I think To Alice and cicishop on taobao have some items that are workable in otome.

you are a gift; thank you. any tips on color pallets to start with? I know that otome is less matchy-matchy, so how does that play into a starter wardrobe? pick a few main colors and accent colors that go with them?

I feel like knowing what works with your skin tone helps. I do see a lot of jewel toned items in otome, which probably explains the appeal of it to classic lolitas who want to transition to casual, yet cute wear, but pastels can come up sometimes.

It might be an odd suggestion, but I think Kate Spade has a lot of great ideas for putting together an otome wardorbe/outfit. They tend to use classic patterns (namely polkadots and stripes) and "spring" colors. .

>> No.8185795

>>8184657
I think that Love21 has a lot more otome-friendly basics like peter pan colors. They do run a bit loose/are boxy, but definitely better for otome than lolita that usually requires a tailored silhouette. I'm no otome expert, but I think that finding balance in coordinating patterns is key to putting together an otome-kei outfit, as it is for lolita (and any fashion for that matter). Otome may come off as bold, but you don't want to be an eye-sore. I think the focus is to showcase the bold patterned piece in an outfit.

Typing is hard.

I almost want to say that otome follows seasonal colors, too, such as getting these brighter colors in the spring and summer, jewel tones in the fall, and icy pastels and metallic in the winter.

omg thank you that is perfect. also I'm not surprised about kate spade? they seem to have an otome feel to their accessories and the core of their line (not that its actual otome, but you get the point) so using them to get a very loose idea makes sense

It is pretty loose interpretation. I feel like adding more cutesy elements like some lace and round collars and sweets themed prints help make an outfit a bit more otome and less career-lady like.

I've noticed that otome-kei does have a retro feel, but that's merely because it came around when women were wearing that sort of thing (neo-Victorian, twee/mod, Mary Quant), and the look stuck.

I'll post some actual otome stuff in a second.

Their stuff is nice but like >>8186072 said, I wouldn't buy any of it at it's original retail price. The Coo Ca Choo brand they stock is just overpriced Taobao/ebay stuff (those $10 ebay fox bags being sold for $40+.) I would have bought some of it because I like checking stuff out in person, but the mark up is always crazy.
I'd also watch out for their customer service. It might have been a once off, but I had a really shitty experience with them.

>doing some online shopping via their website
>I was a bit worried, but their returns policy was reassuring (any online purchase can be returned in store for 'change of mind' reasons or if it's damaged/faulty)
>find a nice dress
>I double check measurements and the material before I buy it
>fast forward a few days and the dress arrives
>the quality is terrible and it's weirdly shiny
>the sizing is totally off as well
>I don't know if they're actual faults, or if the dress is just shit, but I figure I'm still covered for a return
>I go in store to sort it out
>they deny me a refund and try to tell me that returning it 'inconveniences them' because they don't stock that particular dress
>I make it clear that they're violating their entire returns policy as well as a good chunk of consumer law by telling me that
>the worker ends up calling their manager to see if they can accept it
>20mins later the manager agrees to a return
>the worker makes a big deal about how 'they're doing me a favour by accepting it'

Reading that back makes me sound like a bit of a douche, but I kept my cool and didn't once raise my voice or get agro at the worker. I just expect a business to honour their returns policy and to not try and fuck me over.

On a more positive note, I bought a lovely tweed dress with wood buttons from their clearance outlet. I snagged it for $20, but it was originally $200+

American Apparel jacks up the prices really high and then lowers them a lot for sales. I wouldn't buy anything there that wasn't at least 50% off. Still, their stuff is pretty good quality and produced relatively ethically. If you shop their clearance and stack coupon codes on top (you can get 15% off your first order or for your half birthday, 30% off for your birthday, and they run promotions occasionally), you can get stuff from them for dirt cheap.

Seconding ETC, fint, etc. and also adding that Wonderrocket blouses tend to work decently with otome and are pretty generously sized, in my experience. Don't know about arm length, though, because I'm a shorty with pretty standard arms.

>>8191806
If you have a bigger cup size/a good bit of boob, you might have issues with ETC/LG, I think. I wear a 28D-DD (so ~32B-C), and some ETC dresses look weird on me because the bust area is cut really short. Avoid anything high-waisted/look for their regular waist JSKs and give those a try, if you haven't.
Other than that, JM is a bit more forgiving as far as cup size goes; they just don't offer a lot of shirred pieces.

I would recommend going for skirt + blouse combos (pic related) or checking out the normalfag stores listed upthread for JSKs/OPs.

Lolita of five years here, this thread is exactly what I needed. I'm thinking of phasing a lot of the sweet stuff out of my Lolita wardrobe and only keeping dark-colour sweet stuff and more gothic/classic/traditional lolita stuff, but I want to bring Otome in to sort of fill the gap where sweet would be, since I still want to wear cute colours and stuff. I've admired it for years but never really got around to biting the bullet. Thank you all for this thread, it's a treasure.

I have two questions that I'd love help with, though.
1. Though Otome isn't big on poof at all, often lacking any, what sort of petti is desirable for the low-poof look? Is a low-end A-line type suitable?
2. Does anyone have any examples of Lolita brand items in Otome coords? Probably not dresses, at least not anything outside cutsew dresses, but I'd like to bring a lot of my current accessories into it so I'd mostly be starting out just buying main pieces and maybe cardigans and such.

Thank you all, ye're A+

Anyone have thoughts on Jane Marple's JSK cuts? They have so many cute prints, but a lot of times when I see them on mannequins on second hand sites they look ill-fitting as hell. Not sure if I should risk the money to try one on in person, since they don't hold their value that well.

>> No.8209775

>>8209753
I own a couple of Jane Marple dresses and I can confirn that lots of their newer cuts are just weird. I'm on the skinny + tall side and even JSK cuts with corset lacing at the back are at least 10-15cm too big around the waist. Around the bust the fit is better, but there is still that awkward gaping under the arms. I have to get most JM items altered, but it's totally worth it though if you buy the items to keep them.

>> No.8209958

>>8209757
The really high demand prints like the library one or royal order hold their value pretty well. The others don't have great resale on the western market. People will pay about what they pay for used lolita, or less if it's not a lolita-ish design, and JM's retail prices are significantly higher than most lolita brands.

>>8209775
I'm the opposite, basically (5'3" and a bit stocky with a D cup bust) and the weird square bodice cut with a huge waist and awkward gaping at the arms and neckline from the flat bust is what I'm worried about. When you alter them, do you have darts added to take in the waist and does that more or less balance the bodice and fix the fit? I can do alterations, but if I have to basically overhaul the whole dress I'd rather make something from scratch.

>> No.8209980

>>8209958
I recently bought a JM short sleeved OP, and it looks especially awkward and boxy, more so than usual. Their cuts are always quite boxy though, so if you don't mind that they're overall pretty fantastic. I find the JSKs have a better shape, especially if you can tie in the waist.

>> No.8210288

>>8209958
I cannot sew myself, so I get my dresses altered professionally. Most of the times the seamstress opens the dress at the skirt part and removes fabric upwards from both sides and she also has to redo the pleating part (if the dress has pleats) as far as I get it. Sometimes she also adds new seams, usually at the back of the dress. It's very costly, that's why I can only afford a new Jane Marple dress once a year max.
