Not all white people are the same race, just like not all blacks are African, which is what the people in the Rufflechat discussion were presupposing. Different places identify race differently, skin tone is just the American standard of dividing people (to simplify greatly). I'm not saying that white people in America are oppressed, not by a longshot, I'm saying people are using a dumbed-down and oversimplified view of racism to basically excuse their own cunty behavior. My best friend from university is from Nairobi and he didn't understand the attitude that white peoples were at fault for certain things. What gets me is that when Jenna said that black Lolitas aren't the first to come to her mind when she thinks of Lolita, but rather white and Asian Lolitas, I realized that tbh I think the same way. I think lolita and I visualize Misako, Lor, Mana, Cadney, and any combination of features of famous Lolitas and Lolita models. Where does this bias come from? Probably from the severe under representation of black girls, brown girls, Muslim girls and pretty much all the other non-white and non-Asian girls in the fashion in media. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places. That's not to say I don't see some amazing coords from black girls or Muslim girls. They're part of the aesthetic too, just not the cliche, I guess. But I find it hard to believe that all those girls that piled onto Jenna actually imagine a diverse array of girls when they think lolita fashion. That "not my preference" was about tattoos and piercings. Race came up after that and people merged the two points to think she said she "preferred" white/Asian lolitas when she only said she that she automatically had the mental image of whites or Asians when she conceptualized the term lolita. I can' remember the linguistic term for it. Like when people bring up the term "tree" one person's default mental image associated with the word is an oak tree because it is what they were socialized to be used to, whereas someone in another area automatically visualizes a pine tree as their "symbolic" tree.

I just checked my facebook alerts and found this fun drama. I'm actually good friends with Jenna so all of it jumped to the top of my feed. I have to say, I haven't known her to be racist. Her "leggings are pants" thing is a bit cringeworthy, and she's not very tactful, but she's never to my knowledge been intentionally rude or disrespectful. Okay I think I will later tonight when I have time. I'll base the rules kind of the same way. Like anyone can be a mentor but you have to earn it first. Maybe two kinds of mentors. Coord help mentors and general knowledge ones. General knowledge you'll just have to pass a relatively simple info quiz. Get like an 80%+ to pass. To help with coords you'll actually have to send the mod(s) a coord snap. That way no Itas or people who have no clue what they are talking about can get it. But it's still "open to everyone".

Does that sound fair or too restrictive?

Ehh, being able to dress yourself doesn't mean you can dress others. In the normalfag fashion world, I have a close friend who is gorgeous and always dressed perfectly. Like the kind of immaculate style that makes people turn and look (in a good way). But damn she can't help others. Like she absolutely fails at fashion advice to the point that it is kind of sad.
On the flipside is my mother. Dresses casually in a bad way: momjeans, baggy sweaters, ill-fitting tshirts. But holy fuck can she put together an outfit for someone else. If I have issues with an outfit, I'll send a pic to her and she always knows the perfect way to fix it. In the same vein, I've been around a good deal of fashion editors (I have a close friend who works at a big modelling agency) who were mediocre dressers, but were masters the ins and outs of style.

I guess my point is that we can't just a person solely on their own coords. They may coord themselves like a dream, but only be able to work on someone with their tastes that looks exactly like them. Or, which is very possible in lolita, they just have a lot of expendable cash to buy full sets or impressive accessories. Someone without a lot of money may have a nice coord, but it may be very basic (especially if they prioritize quality or if they would rather have more very basic outfits and accessories they can use in different ways rather than one perfectly done OTT coord). Like if someone without a ton of cash buys a pair of shoes that goes well with multiple coords vs someone with a lot of money who buys gorgeous expensive shoes that perfectly match each individual coord.

Maybe a good test would be to give each applicant a random set of items (a random op, jsk, and skirt) and ask them to come up with two hypothetical coords for each one. One of their collages must be under a certain $ amount to really make things hard and find those who are not just rich, but creative too.

Okay. Can you guys give me suggestions on how to vet people then? I don't want this new group to fail the way big sisters does with people giving awful advice, then those that correct them getting in trouble because of hurt feelings. I suspect there are way too many people giving advice who don't even wear lolita and frankly I don't care how fabulous their advice is, in a group for lolita critique, I only want advice and critique from those who wear lolita WELL and interaction with others who actually wear the fashion in general. I was taught in university to always always at least consider the fact that your opponent may be right, and they don't entertain that.
