There seems to be some debate over what actually defines otome, so I'd like to see some examples of ~true~ otome as well as some borderline stuff.

What I'm finding is that it's like a less formal lolita, minimal to no poof, a dress or skirt and blouse paired with a cardigan, and can incorporate more quirky prints/colors that don't usually go in lolita? It seems to have a vintage-y, retro vibe to it as well in some cases?

>> No.8129046

I feel like the line between otome and just general jfashion is a little blurry for me, though?

This

People in the west tend to label everything like all things fit in a little hermetic box and that's not true. Otome is just about the "feel", it does not have rules or guidelines, it's just a name we invented for things people wear normally.

I'd also like to add that otome commonly features quirky motifs and colors/patterns. It's definitely not as matchy-matchy as lolita.

Also inb4 is otome just casual lolita or lolita w/o a petticoat?

otome is often a bit quirkier than general j fashion. It spreads the gap between lolita and otona kawaii.
I think in the past few years as other trends in j fashion have rose like otona kawaii, sieso and himekaji, otome has gotten a lot less distinct.

brands like Emily temple cute, jane marple and leur getter still have that older otome feeling with cute prints, knitwear, and interesting color combinations. But a ton of new brands are not solely otome but produce lots of item s that work with many sweet casual styles like axes femme, ank rouge, amavel, and milk.

I reckon people would get a better feel for the look by looking at brand coordinates and Japanese coordinates over the years. It's interesting to see how it's changed over the years too. I think otome is very difficult to describe in words which is why you see so many people getting it wrong because they think all it is is looking cute and girly.

I feel the same way, anons. There's a million 'different' fashion styles at the moment which all look exactly the same but are desperate to have their own names. I think of Otome as 'the original' in that respect.

The outfit might be okay for a mori inspired outfit, or just for normal fashion, but for otome you want to class it up a bit.

I know the difference between otome and casual lolita is hard to define, but of you are the one representing otome in a fashion show, I think your outfit needs a stronger otome vibe. What you have is really matchy-matchy again and there are no playful details/materials. Maybe you need a second accent color? Or something like a cute ruffly turtleneck or anything that sets it apart from lolita. Good luck!

>> No.8132635

Agreeing with >>8132535. I think it would have more of an otome feel if you swapped the tights for something with a little more personality/quirk. For me, legwear is really important in otome; if you look through the thread, you'll notice that a lot of the girls are wearing legwear that wouldn't necessarily work with the outfit or would be to busy for lolita.
I'd also recommend some accessories, like a necklace or brooch or something.

You can on some people, but not on others.
Some people have a very stereotypical facial structure for their area (see: David Cameron, Robyn, Putin), others look really blank and like they could be from anywhere, and some look like they belong in another country (Ed Milliband, Björk are really extreme examples but I've seen girls in Hungary, Bulgaria and Slovakia that would fit in 100% in the UK or Ireland). Stereotypes are also a huge factor (ie all Italians have dark hair and skin)
Usually people can tell by their makeup, clothes, accent, behaviour, hair and eye colour, or even teeth. I can tell someone's American from their teeth, clothes and demeanour.
In the end, there's no surefire way unless they tell you themselves. You have people of all hair and eye colours all over Europe, for example Michelle Dockery has dark brown hair and eyes and she's British. You also have people from countries like Georgia or Armenia who look like normal white people but nobody really thinks of them or thinks they're Arabs or something so they don't even try guessing.
I've a ginger friend from the Balkans, and people usually ask her if she's Irish because they think people in the Balkans look Mediterranean or like gypsies. She does have a very British-looking face though.
That's why I'm really sceptical of those who say that they can "tell where someone's from just by looking at their face". For some maybe, but definitely not for everyone. If you're white and go to any country in Europe people will usually start talking to you in their mother tongue if you don't look touristy.

Because nobody looks like the "average" person from their respective countries in those pictures and it's passed around 4chan (especially /int/) with no regard to how it had been made.
It's as reliable as that NatGeo image of a green-eyed mulatto woman with the caption "this is how the average American will look like in x year".
Most people who claim that people look different from country to country are yanks. Imaginary lines on a map do not suddenly make people change appearance and intermixing has been happening for a long time even in Europe. The difference is that we aren't heritagefags who think in simplistic terms such as red hair = Irish, brown eyes = Spanish or Italian as I've seen some people in the US do.

Someone else said it first, but I'm the anon you replied to and I'd say that for some people (maybe 80% of people?) you can't really tell, and anyone who says they can *always* tell is bullshitting, but there are maybe 10-20% of people that have very distinctive, say, Irish features. So most Irish people look like English people but some have that pale+freckles+ginger+green eyes or dark hair+pale skin look that makes them look obviously Irish. Same goes for other European countries - some people look very German or very Slavic, but with others you can't really tell. Those girls do not look English, although I couldn't place where exactly they would be from.

I have heard British people remark that Americans don't look "properly" white and to an extent I'd agree; they look white but your average white American will have a mix of European ancestry that means they don't look the same as English people. The spectrum of what's accepted as white American is broader than what's accepted as white British, and over here might have people asking if you're Italian or something. I find it kinda funny watching American TV sometimes how different the actors look to people over here. But of course with a lot of people you can't tell. I've also noticed it being mixed-race in different countries; in the UK people almost never think I'm ethnically English, even though I have no accent, but when I've been to France and Spain people just think I'm French or Spanish and when I went to America most people thought I was white (although one or two guessed Jewish or white Latina). I also sometimes laugh when I see mixed-race Americans on Tumblr describe themselves as "white-passing" or with passing privilege when to me, or in England, they would not pass at all.

tl;dr there are subtle differences I can't really explain but some people just do not look English to me

Do lolitas find themselves gravitating from lolita to otome with age? I'm not talking milkfawn status where 21 is too old, but I'm a sweet lolita turning 29 with no intention of getting into classic lolita. I'm also at a point in my career where I'm more comfortable with buying pieces from Jane Marple firsthand, where I was never able to before, so I wonder if that is contributing to it as well.

I know this discussion comes up often but I like hearing personal stories.

I've already hit my thirties, and yes, I'm buying firsthand from lolita brands. I keep waiting for this mythical moment when I'll give up lolita and turn to otome entirely, but it doesn't seem to be happening, so I continue keeping one foot in otome to see if I'll suddenly be interested next week or something.

With a lot of the otome releases I do like, the prints don't seem any less bright than their lolita counterparts. The prices are on par, but the lolita dresses seem to have more details, and sometimes hold better secondhand value. So every time I try to do a comparison, the lolita items seem to have a bit more advantage. I do find that I now pick out dresses that aren't necessarily the latest print fad, but rather the ones that can be easily dressed up for a lolita meet or dressed down to the same level as an average otome coord.

Maybe it's just me that's weird, though. I've been told I look younger than my age so I guess I can get away with wearing lolita while pretending I'm still in my 20s.

Agreed. Otome prices are even higher than lolita prices if we're just looking at main pieces. JM is easily $200 over an average lolita release and depending on the release doesn't necessarily retain its value. ETC is generally catastrophic in retaining its prices.

For me it's not so much that I prefer otome over lolita, it's just that otome is so much more practical for everyday wear when you're an adult with a 9-5 job in an office - which I hope to be once I finish graduate school at age 27. Hopefully I'll land a position making 40k or more and actually be able to afford JM's firsthand prices.

For me, I just got into the game way later than everyone else. I'd been collecting GLBs since I was 14 and was super into sweet and gothic, but didn't buy my first brand pieces until I was 24. I pretty much exclusively started buying otome and casual pieces--nothing like the stuff that sparked my interest. Either having the internet (and /cgl/) showed me EVERYTHING I could have and shaped my taste, I started gravitating to shit that wouldn't look ridiculous as I got older, or both.

I really love otome, though. I feel like a chameleon when I wear it. A lot of it is SO close to regular clothing but just has this special thing to it no one I run into in fleshspace could ever find and it drives them crazy.

"Wearing what I like" *is* the first consideration

From >>8150313
>With a lot of the otome releases I do like

So the first criteria is already that I like the dress. If I didn't, I have nothing to consider, I wouldn't even pay attention to otome.

When I have to choose between buying an otome dress and a lolita jsk, for eg- I want just one chocolate bar print dress this month, which AP, btssb and ETC have all released, and I like them all with no clear indication that I like one more than the other, that's when I start considering other factors like versatility, dress details, and retention value.

I'd like to point out again that even here, retention value is one out of three factors in deciding whether I buy an otome dress or a lolita jsk, so it's not even a major factor.

I just came to this thread to ask about otome secondhand prices, actually. Could some seasoned otome shoppers give an idea of in general, what 'good' pricing tends to be like for otome pieces? In lolita I consider skirts at $40-180 for popular pieces to be a great deal, and JSK's around $80-250. But I have no idea what in otome is considered a great deal and I'd love to have some advice. I'm looking into getting some Jane Marple skirts and jewelry, in particular and while researching on and off for a few months, I'm still not sure how to judge the prices. Thank you!

Secondhand shops in Tokyo sell ETC for around retail price. Obviously it depends on the print but generally speaking, secondhand ETC doesn't come cheap in Japan (not sure about auctions). Milk is more or less the same.

CC doesn't have a massive selection of Jane Marple, it's usually a small rack with all the nonprints and really worn out looking skirts. Those you could get for maybe less than 10,000yen a piece. JM's popular pieces don't pop up often, but when they do, they go for about retail. JM's accessories start at about 3,000yen and most are in the 3,000-5,000yen range.

Again, these are prices for the Japanese market, not sure what the Western market is like. Hope it helps though.

>>8151940
Yeah, I definitely noticed that a lot of the JM that comes up looks to be pretty worn out, which I was worried about in particular when noting prices. That's good to hear about the accessories though, around what I was hoping for.

Thanks very much!

I've mostly watched ETC dress prices on closet child (there's a couple of specific prints I'm after). They're having a sale now, normally the prices on ETC are a bit higher.

For a shirred dress, it's usually 15k-20+k yen (pretty close to retail, or just under it). For an unshirred dress, the price is much lower, usually around the 7k-10k yen mark.

There's a few items that are exceptions because they were big hits: ETC had a gingerbread print, the shirred version sold for above retail even one year after release (price might be lower now since it's been more than a few years).
Jane Marple had an angel bottle necklace that used to get into serious bidwars with even worn necklaces going way over retail prices.

Oops, forgot to mention that the 3,000-5,000yen accessories are mostly rings.

I don't recommend buying JM secondhand unless you're after a print like Strawberry Label. JM has really good sales; their entire store was 50% off during this winter's Grand Bazaar and their Shinjuku store went up to 70& off. I think their sales are instore only though, so you'd need a SS.

Eh, I find ETC to be really cheap in Tokyo, actually. Unless it's a super popular print (donuts & cutlery, gentleman rabbit, etc.), I feel like it usually goes for about half of retail, sometimes nwt pieces included.

>>8151920
JM is the most expensive and hard to find. Non-print pieces (particularly skirts) pop up often enough for decent prices (below 100) but prints tend to hold their value relatively well.
ETC/LG are mid-price. They're cheaper (both retail and secondhand) than JM, but the cost of individual pieces tends to vary wildly based on the print. I've purchased print JSKs for less than 5,000 new with tags and others for like retail (roughly 20k) for very good used condition.

Milk tends to be pretty cheap (excluding their bags). I've picked up things like the donut cutsew OPs and vintage stamp OP for like 40-60 dollars and a used skirt for like 15 dollars once. However, I had also seen that skirt sell for around $100 in similar condition. It's really all about being patient and really keeping your eyes peeled for deals.

I'm bad about buying accessories, so I'm no help there. I do feel like they're harder to find secondhand, though, so that's my excuse.

Pricing is really dependent on how popular and sought after the piece is, and how new it is. ETC tends to go cheap, Leur Getter not so much (I guess because the brand is new?), and Jane Marple prices can be dead cheap or horrendously expensive.

Jane Marple skirts tend to go from anywhere between 5,000 yen up to 25,000 yen, more commonly I'd say they come up around the 15,000 mark. The jewellery will go from 1,000 yen up to 20,000 yen if it's a really popular and sought after item (like the jam jar necklace), but tends to sit around 3,000 - 5,000 yen.

If you keep an eye on the auctions, you can get amazing deals for popular items. I've been able to get items that go for 20,000 yen+ for 5,000 - 10,000 yen cause I got lucky.

I'm really interested in their crown rings/necklaces. It seems like they release them all the time in different styles but do the velvet ones like the one currently sold out on the site tend to go for an obscene amount? I'm mostly into their regimental and solid skirts/dresses so I hope those go for not too much in decent condition.

Thanks a lot for the estimations to everyone that replied, it really helps.

Anyone have recommendations for good sock/stocking shops, other than the brands (including franche lippee and whatnot)?
I feel like legwear is really important in otome, and when I look at my own outfits, what I'm usually lacking in is either small signature accessories or (more frequently) interesting legwear.
I love ETC's striped and polka dot OTKs, but secondhand legwear doesn't seem to be so popular for otome brands. Most lolita legwear doesn't really work, either, and most normalfag stuff just lacks that otome feel.

Maybe this is correct technically anon but the principle of 'use a cool deep red' remains the same, not to mention the entire internet seems to (perhaps incorrectly) use 'burgundy' to describe their cool red products. As long as that anon understands what a cool red looks like, it doesn't really matter as long as using such terms brings up a bunch of suitable items.

Honestly most of my tights/socks are from various Aliexpress sellers. Sockdreams is good if you want something basic like stripes or polka dots. Celeste Stein has some funky patterns but a few of them work well for otome imo. Modcloth has good tights now and them since they target the twee/quirky market. And if you have a Daiso in your area they can get some cute ruffle ankle socks in different colors.
