So like nobody's remade the AA thread so here we go.

QsOTD: What are you working on right now? What should you be working on? Anything you're excited for (upcoming con, product, etc)?

How do you guys find table mates if you dont know any art friends? I only attend small cons because they are cheap and I can easily gain profit. But I'd love to go for a larger convention this year, but it would make more sense for me to split table cost. If anyone is interested I'm in Vancouver, Canada.

It would actually be our first AA if we make it. TBH, starting at such a huge con would probably be really bad, but all of our local small cons have apparently been sold out for months...we figured we may as well try applying at the least since we've been meaning to try for years.

Ok, critique time.

>>8107587
The face is really generic looking, like it's straight out of a "how to draw anime" book. There's no actual stylization, it's just an anime Cesaer drawn like a midget kid. Consider looking into more exaggeration. Also the colors are yawnsville, which is a no-no for a series as colorful as JoJo.

>>8107692
This also looks pretty formulaic, like... you have an understanding of coloring and style, you just don't really know how to implement it. While she's chibi, that doesn't mean her head should be quite THAT big compared to her body. Chibis also don't usually have noticeably hourglass figures, the defined waist/hips clash really badly with the stump arms and legs. There's a lot going on here that just looks lazy.

>> No.8107971

>>8107955
Thanks for the critique anon! I'm definitely working on the colors. It's a little hard for me since I've never really trusted myself to know what's good as far as colors go. I hadn't thought about the face, though. I guess I was trying to be a little too "safe" to try and make it look vaguely buyable.

Thanks again for the critique, anon! Looks like I have some work to do!

>> No.8107975

don't be afraid to really push the proportions or colours when you're doing things like jojo or chibis. Practicing a couple times just to do fun things and go wild is a good way to loosen up. Don't go into it all the time thinking about selling it, because it's a lot of pressure. Maybe try some things like imitating different chibi styles (tons of mangaka have them, just look at how they proportion bodies, eyes, limbs, etc..) or doing palette challenges.

Good luck anon!

Look at stuff other people do and ask yourself: what makes this style appealing? What do I need to change to make my stuff similarly appealing? How do the different elements in a figure come together to look cohesive?

Basically just start thinking critically about your work and you'll improve. I think you both have potential beyond generic anime chibis, so it'd be nice to see you grow past it.

Pic related is what the red-haired guy looks like, and then another character I finished next to how he looks in the manga. To be honest half of them could run for Gakuen Handsome's cast.

I'm still getting used to doing characters in this proportion, so I try to drag in aspects of the face from the character models more than anything else. I'll keep it in mind about the blush and saturation and try other things out though. I'll probably finish this set like this since I've gotten a lot of them done already, but like trying new things anyway.

Blushing is tough for me since if the face doesn't have a certain amount it feels 'empty' or flat to me. It's definitely something I need to practice more with.

I don't really know how to give constructive crit because I don't draw anime this is just from an outsiders perspective. But I'll try.
I think the lips look odd with the style, the neck is too long, the arms and legs are too thick in some places which looks awkward, the star eyes although they intend to be cute are not very well executed (too big or just look wierd) the colors are dull and the nose/lips are too shiny.
I don't know I hope I did ok but yeah for your own sake don't invest the money into these charms right now and wait until you improve a bit more. I mostly buy from artist alley so just a bit of buyers input.>>8109076

>Shinkai
>>8109076
Upping the saturation would help, especially given his eyes are so bubbly and there are sparkles in his hair. Use a different color like a red or blue instead of black for the gradient to make it pop. Maybe sharpen up the sparkles too be cause right now they look lazy. Also usakichi looks like a lil flat poop.

Nitpicky but I think it's dumb when people add blue to his hair if the rest of the coloring isn't stylized. Watanabe loves to fuck around and play with colors on his covers.

>> No.8109171

>>8109161
Hm I'll definitely keep this in mind, too. I appreciate the input! I usually get the most positive comments on the eyes so I'll probably keep doing them that way at least.I think I need to take a day to just draw some fat chibis in different proportions though for sure.
>>8109162
Shinkai is 300% fucking lips. My fav tho.

Nope! Your input was super helpful and I think because you know the series that was good, too! For the hair I just picked a more red/darker colour but maybe pushing it over to a more purple one would be good too. I'll keep the saturation up and rework some things overall. I might change the shape of the hair sparkles as well since making them that cross sort of shape is really easy to get lazy on..

I'll definitely try to improve on the things mentioned here! I have to go to work now or I'd post a correction but I also don't want to completely shit up the thread with my stuff so.

Thank you again!

His butt should be turned to the side more to match up with his upper body. It looks awkward when you notice they're not very parallel and that's sorta painful.

>>8109171
It'd be really weird to see a lipless Shinkai! I usually draw him with just the exaggerated bottom lip in chibi form. If you pay attention, even in that screenshot you posted, his upper lip is thin in comparison.

Have you looked at the official chibi artwork? It might help you figure out proportions a bit and give you an idea of how to do their signature things (Arakita's mouth for example. It can look really weird on chibis but the official ones pull it off) As for the sparkles, star shapes could look cute and match with the eyes. If it's something you do everyone you could even add little star charms to the cords. No problem though! It's good you're open to critique. I just wanna see nice Pedal fanart lol.

Using yellow/brown tones for blush on pale skintones makes them look really sickly, and the blush is too strong. I also would advise against the white shine on top of the blush as well, it makes the nose, cheeks and knees look kind of like pimples. That's up to you though. Like someone else said, the combination of brown/black outlines is jarring in some places, and the hand looks very messy there. You should spend more time on your lines. I would also recommend getting rid of the white lines for his eyelashes (?), it looks strange and distracting.
His head is also placed a little too far back on his neck, so it kind of looks like his neck is going to snap from the weight of that melon. You gotta remember where the neck connects to the skull. This is a messy edit because I don't have my tablet right now, but hopefully you get the idea of the placement. The neck on your other one is fine though.

These are cute but there's some areas where you can stand to improve. You should definitely practice your anatomy and shapes, more the shapes for chibis. Also, your line width would stand to improve if you varied some, and didn't use as thick a base line. Line weight should be determined by how the figure sits and distributes their weight.
Also, like what the other anons were saying about the blushes. Instead of using brown tones use more peach/red/pink/sienna/whatever colors. Yellow/brown blush tones make a character look sickly. It helps to think of it in terms of actual, physical makeup blush tones. But also with your line art, on skin portions, don't hop from a skin tone to a black, it's very jarring. Hopping from a skin tone to something like a red or blush color, however, is not so much and can play in your favor with lighting.
As for the white eyelash details, if that's your thing then keep doing it, it's ultimately your style. I would suggest, however, depending on the hair color swapping out white for a grey or blue, and that brown haired character would probably look better with reddish/burnt sienna color lining the eyelashes.

But definitely keep drawing more and practice you shapes, you'll get your chibis down eventually.

If I understand your post correctly, you're trying to display a hair product on something that isn't hair. While that's cheaper, it just looks awkward, and it might deter customers from buying the product since they might not be sure of how it's supposed to look.

I just display my hair products with a mannequin head + wig combination, and the product in place as it would be on the customer. You'll obviously need to make an extra display piece for this set up, though. You *could* borrow wigs from cosplaying or lolita friends, but there's a lot of liability involved in that. I just buy wigs on sale when I see them. Mannequin heads are pretty cheap to get all the time.

Are they basically the same thing function wise? If so, just displaying one on the head and just having a stand (I'm a decorated corkboard person, but any stand will do), with a sign that says something like "Also Available In These Designs" will do just fine.

If you have things like say small hairclips and large hair combs, put them on the same wig and have other variations set out like you would if it was just one style. You might want to look through some decora hairstyles (pic related) to see ways on doing this without it looking too weird (why mess your wigs up trying them out yourself when people have already tried out styles, right?).

I'm not sure if this is your first time selling accessories, but just a warning- we're #1 for stealing from. Keep your eyes on your products at all times. Different anon. I get the look you're going for, but it feels a little bit unfinished still. A slight pattern or texture in the background would help make it feel more finished and less like a quick sketch or WIP. Because right now, that's what it looks like. Practice for the real thing.

Personally, a bit more negative space would help out (the figure is crowding the image, there isn't enough space between the figure and the edge of the page), as well as paying attention to your lines. Whenever I see a very simply, flat colored piece, I expect a lot of detail and amazing line work. Here, I'm just not seeing that. There are a lot of places to put in extra details, like the sword, like the jacket. Part of the problem is your lines are getting lost in your colors. The brown needs to be darker, or black to really contrast with your grays (it's blending in and not standing out).

I don't mind the colors you've chosen, but I do think making the white skin even a tiny bit of a cream would warm it up and tie all the colors in. The white is almost too stark with all the warm browns and grays.

I kind of don't like the pose. There's no real ground established to make the stance feel secure and the weapon isn't shaped in a way that makes it look supportive of the stance. With a cane or even an unsheathed sword that's dug into the ground it makes more sense. Also the lines of the uniform disappear too much into the color. Lack of shading also leaves it feeling kind of flat.

I think the muted colors can work but there needs to be thicker lines or contrast between the lineart and the fill colors.

I do like your lineart from what I can see it's very clean. For the most part I like your style but something does feel slightly off about the face. Feels kinda of Soul Eater maybe? It's hard to sell the eye that slopes down in the far edge.

Criticism is tough but this is a place to get honest opinions. Never stop practicing, never stop improving. You're already on a good track and you can do even better.

>> No.8110421

Hey, veteran artists. I'm relatively new to artist alleys and would like some advice. Does original art sell at all? Because I like my original pieces a lot more than any of the fanart I've done recently. I know fanart sells well and it's kind of a necessity at any artist alley, but I don't really like drawing super stylized anime people, and I feel like my style just looks better in my original pieces. I'd love to try selling more original stuff at conventions, but I don't know if it's even worth it.

>> No.8110444

>>8110421
It'll sell if you're really good or have an established fanbase. It'll also sell if it follows a relatively popular theme or niche.

I don't know if this is really "proven" anywhere, but I also think it helps to shell out a little bit when printing your original art. If you put more respect into the piece (using, say, a nicer paper stock), I feel like people will take you more seriously. You'll definitely fall into the "sell less but for more" category, but I feel like that isn't such a bad place to be in for original work.

I tend to alternate between cutesy lolita art and sci-fi shit; idk if that's niche enough. I'm a bit of a nobody on tumblr because I rarely post, so I guess I'll have to work on building a fanbase first.

Legitimately, does anybody think it might be worth it with travel costs? I have my first con at the end of this month to sort of gauge how my stuff does, but the payment deadline is obviously before that so.

Honestly debating offering to share with another artist to make things easier but also not sure how much I'd hate myself if I did it. (Not sure if the friend I usually go with could do this one.) Another CO artist here (I'm also going to that con at the end of the month! I've always done well there and I hope you do too).

The cheapest way out of CO is by bus service like greyhound but it is also the longest. Flying to the east coast is hella expensive and since you don't have any history to really tell whether or not you'd do well... tbh anon I would say cancel and try again next year. Unless you have that kind of cash lying around then yes, go for that booth but I was in a similar situation with AnimeUSA last year and it would have cost me upwards of 600+ dollars in travel and I just wasn't making that much of a profit with my tables at the time.

I think people tend to pick who they like or who is popular. I really like Imanotsurugi, but I know that Nakigitsune is the most popular(?). So I think with most other things there has to be a balance between making what you like/are passionate about and also trying to make something that will sell.

Using multiple characters in one piece/print is a good way to go. Buttons are easy because they're smaller/easier. But investing in charms for something like this might be a little riskier so you'd have to be careful.

Much better. The slight shading and details in coloration are helping make it seem more finished. I still feel like the background needs a bit of something, because you have slight shading on the figure but the background is stark. In this case, again, a slight pattern or texture will make it feel thoughtful and not like an afterthought.

My only other critique on this new version would be that I think the slight shadows DO work, but now you're lacking appropriate highlights. I see them in the hair and skin, but not on the outfit. I also think your shadows on the clothing are too similar in tone. It's hard for me to describe but I can see the slight color difference, but it's not always registering as "shadow" because if you were to turn it grayscale, the shadow and base color would be very similar values. If that makes sense. I would take your shadows darker just a tad, all over. Play with shadows being cool all over, or warm all over. I personally think shadows that had a reddish base would really warm up the piece and bring it to life.

I only really attend small conventions and my third is coming up. I'm attending J-fest and previously I went to Akimatsuri and Summer Fest. If I could find a table partner I would be interested in AE.

As a general con attend-y I look forward to AE and Cos and Effect

You and I share similar feelings about AR, haha. I'd almost gave it a chance but I didn't sign up for a table soon enough. $200 for an unskirted table with one pass is really hard to swallow. I wish there were more honest reviews about the AA experience there, and not just "I had fun and it was nice seeing people" sort of review.

My worry about AE, as I've seen in the past, is the cramped room they put the artists in. It's terrifying, artists are back-to-back with other artists, and the walking aisles are just as cramped. I'd go insane in such a space, but I do need more events to attend so I'll just have to give it a chance.

I've sold at Cos&Effect before when they were on their own, and I did pretty well. But now since they joined with NWFF at a new location, I don't have quite an idea of how it's like. I've never attended NWFF but they are already sold out of AA tables ($150/table+pass).

You can look forward to MiniComi, it's been picking up popularity as a 1-day AA event and the new location at Creekside community center makes it ideal for commute and cosplayers flock to it for photoshoots. The table price is pretty darn reasonable, $50 last year for a full table. I'm usually a regular at MiniComi except for the one year I took a break, I highly recommend checking it out when they open up soon.

I attended AE several years ago as a con goer and it seemed okay, but I'm not sure how it is now. When I went to Akimatsuri last year the tables were -ridiculously- cramped. Tables were right up against each other side by side and the only way to escape my table was to crawl under it. It was pretty stuffy and would completely suck for anyone doing on site commissions. I had attended Akimatsuri again as a guest a prior year and the set up was 10x better and was held at SFU Burnaby

I heard pretty bad things about NWFF even from the attendees. And to be honest I was approached by the guy who ran the con (Brian or something?) at Akimatsuri. He completely rubbed me the wrong way >Even though AA had stopped submissions, told me to apply anyways
>They hadn't sold enough tables
>After chatting with me he proceeds to stand in front of my table talking business with another guy for 10 minutes
>What the hell why would you do this

Thanks for the input! I've been doing fairly well at 1 day events. I would really like to expand to full events but I think it would be better financially for me to split a table.

I think you've got some of the same problems as other simple style illustrations in this thread. The lineart here is much better and more detailed, but still doesn't seem quite right. Like other anons have said, your pieces look unfinished. Whether you are trying to do these as small prints or not, they just look like sketches in a way.

My opinion would be that having some kind of background would help you out. In your case, where everything is white and black lineart and figures, having a flat color background might actually work to your advantage. But I'd also like to see some patterns, since you're pulling them in elsewhere. Maintain the balance of color and black and white. In your pieces, the clothing sometimes has colors, some of it won't. I think having one color to the piece like in >>8114941 is a very nice balance of that one color vs. white, but I'd still like to see a different color (contrasting) for the background.

Also, your patterns need work. They are low res pics that looks like you just took them straight off the web. The print in the dress isn't even flat. Your images are drawn in a very flat style, so your patterns should be flat as well. Trying to make it 3D is destroying the flat aesthetic you are working to create with the lack of shading and color.

Doubling back to your lineart, while it is much further along than other pieces, I still think there is room for more detail. While there is some variation between thick and thin, not much. Given the simplistic nature of your colors and composition, the lineart should be detailed and interesting. Otherwise these will look like sketches or preliminary drawings.

Finally, I'll suggest for instances like >>8115113 that you use actual typography vs. drawing it in. Unless your hand type skills are very good, this only enhances the hasty, amateurish aspect. It looks like the kind of thing I'd hastily scrawl on a WIP just to post on tumblr, not a finished piece I want to purchase.

I was sitting across from a both selling some original lolita arty one and one of the girl's prints was this bitchy looking lolita and the handwritten, poorly positioned text of "y'all are basic bitches" and it just. It made me so angry, like you're gonna tell people they're basic when you haven't looked at your own art before shoving it off to the printer's?? I would rather sit across from Ramy's shiny desu booth for a 4 day con than have to stew in my annoyance over this piece of shit print.

Tl;dr don't do the handwritten thing for your prints because it's tacky and everyone hates it

Well, it's a juried AA, plus they need TaxIDs, so I think they need the info from both of us. Their rules say "Jury/First come first serve" which...seems contradictory to me, but I guess they can only take so many applications.

NGL, part of the reason I'm nervous is that the person who asked me to table with them apparently didn't look up any of the AA's information and didn't know what all we would need to apply (or even that it was juried) until I told her just recently. I don't know if they want me to fill out the application, she hasn't given me her info...it's all kind of a mess, I guess. Applications open within the next day or so, too.

A_30.psd (Design A 30 charms)
B_20.psd (Design B 20 charms)

It's just really really easy to get away with a low skill level in Arizona. Some anon even mentioned that they love seeing shitty artists in the alley, because they'll be the next good artists. I have to disagree. While I wouldn't buy either of them because I'm not interested in the subject matter, I wouldn't buy anything in the right style. It looks childish and unpolished. The ocean in the background is lopsided, the painting style used looks unfinished, and the composition is awkward. That combined with the anatomy makes it look like your average teenage tumblr artist, not something that should be sold for profit.

The style on the left is infinitely more finished and polished. I can see it selling as a keychain or a sticker in addition to a button, which could not be done with the print on the right.

Oh nice, 'cause I was panicking since it was supposed to be this weekend based on the old counter.

>>8121628

It's the general A-kon tumblr. I also checked the info they posted on the website and it looks like if you and a friend want to sell at one table, you're both going to need a valid tax ID.

"It must be one Artists handmade artwork, or crafts. Shared tables or Studio tables must be applied for stating such. Every artist selling their wares MUST have their own Tax ID for Texas."

What you might be able to do is have your friend be a helper and sell her stuff, and then y'all just keep a running list of what of her stuff sells, you pay her for her stuff that sold, and charge her tax on it (so when you file your taxes, you're filing them properly and on total items sold). That's kinda a workaround, but not sure if that would be okay for A-kon. Don't quote me on that. The best thing is to ask A-kon if you have questions.

I'd rather not risk it; I've heard A-kon is getting stricter on their rules. We both have tax IDs, though, so it shouldn't be a problem. I probably will ask about other application questions; they updated saying they still needed final approval and now there's an AA specific twitter.

I'm mostly anxious because apparently, applications filled up in 20 SECONDS last year which is...a little unbelievable and I watched the counter like a hawk for an hour today to make sure I could get on it. I get that A-Kon is big but does it really fill up that fast?

>> No.8122183

>>8122109
Yeah, it does. Here's the issue: the list of people applying is huge (because the convention is huge and you have to go through the AA to get to the dealers' room, so it's guaranteed traffic), but the size of the AA is still about the same size as a con that is Anime Fest's size. I would love for there to be more spots available, or at least to have a rolling application system based on quality instead of first come, first serve. I understand why that's not possible, though, but it's so stressful.

I sell mostly plushies, so they... are generally my best sellers. To narrow it down, the ones that sold best were functional like wear as an accessory or a phoneholder. The slowest sellers ever are these giant bubble tea plushies (don't know what I was thinking when I made them) and Tiger & Bunny plushies. Guess they are too big or something. I think things based on series sell better in waves; whatever is popular, part of a trend, will get noticed and sell faster.
