She borrowed a friend of mine's costume while we helped her film an AoT-themed promo for another convention she was a guest for. She ended up hanging out with us for most of the weekend. Extremely nice lady.

Tumblr has a super bizarre possessiveness over POC characters where people like to segregate those who are and aren't "allowed" to cosplay them. Even though I'm always happy to see more POC in media and in cosplay it just strikes me as stupid when tumblr tells someone they're not allowed to dress up as their favorite character just because "they're POC and you're not".

Blackface and really noticeably darkening your skin to look more like a specific race won't ever not be weird to me, though. Either you look like a racial caricature or you look like you got a shitty spray-on tan.

IIRC there was one girl on Tumblr who claimed that whoever hired a white person to voice Korra was whitewashing/oppressing the PoC. Someone posted the screenshot here and we found out that she was just a white girl whose mother told her they "may" have distant Native American heritage (later turned out to be false), and yet declared she was a proud woman of color. She deleted her Tumblr shortly after.
