what is cgl's opinion a pattern dump thread? I would have expected to have found at least 3 here but there are none.

>> No.8070023

I reckon we don't usually have them due to the fact that most good/worthwhile patterns are either pdfs or in so many seperate parts that it just becomes tedious to upload or download. So usually we end up just sticking to tutorials or short little plushie patterns

I appreciate you sharing this specific one though, for some reason I had every page of it saved but this first one

What type of sleeves? inset sleeves are a pain, but if you're not going for super quality, you can sew the underarm last.

Fuck, I think I have been doing sleeves the hard way like a dumbass this whole time. Thanks for showing me the light, anon.

>> No.8070263

>>8070218
yeah, set in sleeves are a butt, especially since a lot of commercial patterns have too much cap ease. sewing the side seam/underarm last is much easier.

here's a photo tutorial just so it's more clear.

http://whatthecraft.com/easy-sleeves-photo-tutorial/

>> No.8070270

I don't think set sleeves are that hard but I did have my problems for years with them. You just need a lot of pins to hold it in place (and I mean a lot, like one per 1cm) and then hand stitch it to place with loose stitches. Then sew carefully with a sewing machine and rip the placeholder stitches off. If you do it with enough care, the result will be much better than the underarm last method.

And even though we don't necessarily print patterns right like that I think it's important for people to share patterns to show how certain things work and how you can make the clothes fit with small alterations. I'd contribute but I don't have any patterns on my hard drive at the moment since I do everything myself by hand.

If I have a narrow back, could I do the opposite of these or is there another trick? Every time I use a commercial pattern I end up having to take big chunks out of the darts or princess seams in the back and that doesn't always end pretty.

I think so? that's how it works with a small bust adjustment

I always go with my high bust with patterns, so usually the shoulders fit. Most alterations books say to start with the shoulders and work down.

I'm teaching myself how to draft since commercial patterns are becoming a PITA, and indie patterns, while a bit better, are a bit hit or miss.

I also learned how to pattern first. Commercial patterns are a mystery to me, I know the majority of terms but the instructions still make me go whut. Then again, I never took them seriously, never really sat down and committed to one, because I always knew I could fall back on making my own.

But when the day comes that I need pants for a cosplay, I'm totally going to give in and just buy a pattern to alter, because pants.

I currently go to school for Costume Construction, and one of my textbooks from first year is invaluable - The Costume Technician's Handbook 3rd Edition. I'd suggest it to anyone interested in learning how to draft, as it covers a broad range of patterns that you can recreate from instructions found in the book. I don't own too many books on sewing (other than that one; it's my bible), but I do use a lot of reference books, in particular 20,000 years of fashion - might be great for cosplays with medieval themes, or something like Trinity Blood.
'The New Complete Guide to Sewing' Is another - more of a beginner's book, but comes with lots of base patterns!
Also if you can get your hands on it (it's pretty pricey) 'Patternmaking for Fashion Design' (not sure what edition) it again is fantastic for those looking for more of an intermediate guide. I borrow mine from my teacher, but I am sure you can rent it from a university library that offers a theatre/fashion program!
Also, selling The Costume Technician's Handbook - it has a lot of information on dying, millinery, and wig shaping!

Nah, my friend taught me in the beginning and we kind of freehanded pattern drafting so...that's what I do now lol I still don't know how to do things the proper way, I just kind of adjust as I go along through multiple fittings. I bought a commercial pattern for a more recent project because it was $1 and it was exactly what I needed. I didn't realize that the sizes at the back didn't mean the the pattern inside included enough for all the sizes, so I ended up having to fiddle around with the pattern for a while to make it fit me. I also read the instructions like 600 times to make sure I was doing each step correctly and in order as I went along. I don't actually know if I saved time with this one lol. It looks nice though?

You don't need a pattern, Anon. They're super easy to self-draft. Skirt is 3x your natural waist measurement wide, and then usually about 21-23" long. Your waist band is either (A)your waist measurement, plus an inch or so for the zipper, for an unshirred waist or (B), the width of your skirt, for a fully shirred waist.
The Otome no Sewing books have some skirt patterns that are pretty decent if you need a more complicated pattern, but otherwise you're better off using your imagination, some basic math, and self-drafting.

Adding to this - 3x waist is a bit small, it was barely ok back in the day for old school . Approx 3x hip is usually better, or total hem circumference of 100"-110".
