I don't see how people don't see the difference between blackface and darkening your skin to look like a character. Blackface is terrible, but there's nothing wrong with a white guy wearing brown body paint to look like Garterbelt.

Blackface isn't cool but changing your ethnicity via makeup is fine. The difference is that blackface is made to mock whereas changing race itself is not necessarily for that reason. Of course you could easily insult someone while in this makeup but the makeup itself is not offensive.

One of the most common arguments is that it is a case of white privilege. Just because you have privilege and can wash off the race you portray doesn't mean it is bad, having privilege is good, it just means you should be aware that some people don't have it as good as you.

>> No.8058606

Because to tumblr shits like that it is a derogatory term. As well as just being white, being white, cis or male and/or any combination will make you the devil to people like that.

It just looks terrible. don't do it.

If you want to cosplay a darker character get a tan or a spray tan.

or you don't have to cosplay said darker character at all since theres tons of options for you to cosplay the at will be skin tone accurate.

Either way, just please don't look makeup, it looks horrible as hell. no sjw is going to pull you aside if you got yourself a tan.

>> No.8058725

don't do blackface or any racebending via makeup because
1. it looks shitty
2. even if you're just doing it to """accurately cosplay a character""" someone's ethnicity isn't a costume
3. if you are pale you've got 94304839048 other characters to cosplay this shit isn't even necessary
and yeah i know the picture OP posted isn't Technically black facing seeing as black face refers to a really specific kind of makeup used in minstrel shows it's still in terrible taste and there's no good reason to do it

I think you can do it if:
-You know what the fuck you're doing in terms of actually applying makeup (see: Not OP)
-You don't give a fuck and can live with being called/considered insensitive or an asshole.

People can argue about this to high hell and back, but it doesn't change the fact that a lot of people, whether savvy to cosplaying or not, are offended by the practice of changing your skin color for the sake of costume. I don't think it's fair to disregard the opinions of people who have very valid reasons of disliking this practice. At the end of the day, you're arguing about your right to engage in a hobby over the feelings of people with a history of oppression and misrepresentation (the ramifications of which still persist as extremely real, tangible problems today).

If it's that important to you, do it, fine whatever. If you acknowledge and accept the fact that you're being a little of an asshole, at least you have that. I think what's worse than actually changing the color of your skin for cosplay is doing that and trying to deny racism or even claiming that you're trying to fight racism or something. At that point, you're an asshole, you're ignorant, AND you're a hypocrite, in which case, just do everyone a favor and quarantine yourself from the rest of humanity.

I dunno, my two cents.

I've yet to see an example of it done well. People use bronzer or darker foundation and they just look fucking dirty, or like they got a shit spraytan. Unless you really know what you're doing as far as colors and contouring, don't do it. It's really not important for your skin color to be correct, and if it is to you, just pick a different character. I've seen too many shit attempts.
I guess I can't really say whether it's offensive or not because I'm white, so no, it's not to me personally, but I can see how an actual person of color could be pissed.

I always wonder if people realize that a character isn't gone just because a white person cosplayed them.

A friend of mine used a darker make up for some character and even ater hours it was really flawless and nicely done and people complimented her all the time about it.
If people put effort into it, it can look nice.

I am so sick of this discussion always being brought up by tumblr sjws after we had that huge discussion about the gal cosplaying that black woman from the walking dead.
Black anons were more offended about white teen girls patronizing them than about someone wanting to cosplay their favorite character.

Also: americunts not realizing blackface and the like is barely an issue or barely even known in a lot of parts of the world.

>> No.8060466

Why dont black people do whiteface when they cosplay white characters?

>> No.8060484 [DELETED]

>>8060466
Because they generally can't; they'd look like a monkey covered in house paint.

It's why they hate when white people racebend: we can even make our noses look bigger like in >>8059827, while they can't squeeze their silverback noses smaller or make their brown skin white.

They're jealous, so they play the oppression card. It's the only thing they know how to do, so I really can't blame them....

Saying someone's ethnicity isn't a costume is retarded.
In that case, it's sexist for a man to cosplay as a woman or vice versa-- or even a trans person to cosplay as a cis person or vice versa-- because "their gender isn't a costume."

Also everyone who does race bent make-up don't know jack shit about how to do make-up, how it works, what doesn't work etc. People who do race bent make-up usually can't even do their eyeliner correctly.
