i went to a maid cafe at a con. the location was really nice. it was in one of those revolving restaurants, but it wasn't revolving at the time, there was still a really nice view though. there were both maids and butlers. only a few of the maids were cute, but luckily my group got a cute one. she was really nice and fun to talk to. unfortunately the majority of the fruit in the parfait i ordered was still frozen.

>> No.8021529

Ah fuck, the anime club at my university did a maid cafe for a day. It was awful and overpriced, and this maid forced my friends to go in and order because there were too few customers. As soon as they got more people in(think 5 minutes after, my friends weren't even done with their coffee), she forced them out. My friends are pretty beta so they went along with it, though they did complain about it after.

It was also really really weeby. One of their taglines in their ads were, "You better come... goshujinsama." The maids and butlers looked terrible too(save for a few, but the few who didn't look terrible were wearing general jfashion shit and didn't dress up like a maid except for putting on an apron). There was even an overweight guy who (badly) crossdressed and all the other maids were squealing and cheering him on.

Would post pics but eh, I'd rather avoid a possible shit storm.

Alright, buckle yourselves up because this is a long one.

I've been to one pop-up maid cafe in the states. It was at an anime convention in Texas, can't remember if it was A-Kon or AnimeFest, but either way it was pretty low quality. We played Jenga with our maid and had shitty tea and watched the maids sing anime theme songs. The enthusiastic service did not make up for the terrible and overpriced food. Maids were 4/10

In Akihabara I've gone to two, Grand Pirates and @home cafe. Grand Pirates is some rinky-dink basement affair, but the food was delicious. The maids sang anime theme songs again. Maids were 6/10

@home cafe is a totally different animal. The maids were adorable despite their difficulty with English, the meal set I purchased was quite reasonable (2,600 yen for a drink, a meal, a dessert, and a photo with the maid of my choice. Combine that with the 600 yen fee for the table amounts to roughly $35, which is still better than some American places) and the food was amazing. Everything was instagram-worthy. Maids were 9/10

tl;dr, anime convention maid cafes tend to be run by volunteers and kind of bad, Akihabara cafes can run the gamut from bad to good. Definitely recommend @home cafe if you ever visit glorious nippon.

P.S. it doesn't really count as a maid cafe, but the AKB48 cafe in Akihabara (duh) is worth a visit. It's right next to the Gundam cafe.

But all the other maids were lovely, the performance was cool and the good was cute and yummy. Very expensive but no more than a full meal in TGIs so I was OK with it.

Well, at a certain point ugliness is kind of an "eye of the beholder" thing. Some people might actually be attracted to someone who's not as objectively cute or hot or sexy simply because they seem more approachable and like someone they can relate to.

Plus sometimes it just seems totally subjective. Like there are girls that I've always thought were average or even a bit unattractive but people still seem to like them well enough.

I keep my little polaroid (that the maid decorated) in my wallet because it's a fun conversation piece. Food was fine. Server was cute (not like... sexy cute, just regular cute) and their "star performer", "Mariru" came in and did three or four songs. Good maid cafes should have maids that are both cute and experienced in serving. Utilizing the maid aspect from Japanese cafes wouldn't be hard if you could do this. I used to work on a boat as a singing waitress and it was the same principle, cute girls who could serve and entertain, that's what it should be.

Sadly though, weebs who are cute, can serve and can entertain are probably rare.

I think it could most definitely work, but you'd need to find people first and foremost that are willing to WORK. Since weebs are generally teenagers that haven't tried their hand at earning an income yet, that breeds difficulty. They'd get way too excited about the cute part, forgetting all the skills they need to actually help the customers.

If you go the other route and hire good normalfag workers it would be much better, but I don't think they'd be as into the role.

The only real solution I can think of is approaching all the nerdy/weeby girls you've met or seen in retail and ask them if their interested. Offer a slightly higher wage (or the possibility of tips) if possible, and you'd be basically saving their asses.

I'm American but I've been working in a Japanese boutique. We already have to have a look down, but the wage is low. I'm always expected to perform great customer service, but there's no such thing as tips there. Girls like me could be won over in a heartbeat.

I would like the maids to be willing to do that silly cutesy bullshit like saying a magic spell over my food or drawing a picture in ketchup on omurice. There's a local maid cafe that has the person who runs it sometimes do events at the bar I work. Every time she does an event she does her magic spell for everybody there, "moe moe kyun~". It's cute, though I'd never be able to say that on stage like her.

I've been to a few at cons, it was about as I expected because the servers obviously have no experience. Servers are slow, inattentive(Not consciously but they don't know the cues like experienced wait staff), and generally don't know how to deal with customers.

As a customer I don't hold it against them but if I were in charge of the cafe that wouldn't stand. I would contact a local restaurant to take the members as volunteers and undergo training. I would also invite people to act as customers to run practice services before the main event.

They ALWAYS have to go through hotel catering and because of budgeting. they always end up with the cheapest food they can get which turns out to be pretty bad, thus making the cafes do more entertainment styled things to make up for the lack of food.
rarely do the cafes get to bring in outsourced food from somewhere other than the hotels.

I went to an @home cafe a few months back, they actually had a plus size girl (by Japanese standards) and a few average to not so attractive girls mixed in, but they all seemed pretty pleasant and any flaws seemed to cancel out with other quirks, so they were all pretty popular... granted I decided to try the level that wasn't Japanese only, so the fact that they were comfortable enough to deal with foreigners probably played a huge role.

There's a reason why only teenaged weebs who don't know any better sign up for this shit. As for volunteer ones, I'd do it if I see the opportunity arise somewhere local, but so far nothing.

I'd love to actually open my own restaurant/cafe but that kind of requires quite a bit of capital, which a college student doesn't have. By the time I can actually obtain the capital to invest in opening the establishment, I'd be way too old to do it myself and would have to hire younger girls, which defeats the purpose of what you were asking about in the first place. Also adding that the type of potential employees this kind of thing attracts are usually weebs who have only been exposed to the exaggerated fetishized maids in their kawaii animus. They think it's fun because of the act. But this is a job that requires both the act and being able to handle customer service. They might be really into the act, but they'll fall flat on the customer service if they think they only signed up for the act. Someone has already mentioned this up there.

The main aspect of maid cafes, hell being a MAID, is that you're attending to someone. If you don't have that, you're just a restaurant where the girls wear more costumey getups than a practical standard waitress uniform. It's not a place for the girls to bring attention to themselves; it's supposed to be a place for the customer to feel like they are the center of attention. Everything the maids do is for the customer. That's what it means to work in food industry. The weebs don't understand this.

My uni has two clubs that do anime, one of them is strictly dedicated to anime, and the other is an Asian cultural club, which is primarily weebs (and for whatever reason a mostly black population).
The strictly anime club actually does a voting system and we watch anime most voted on, and there's not a lot of autists who stick around because once the film rolls no one talks very much during the shows (unless it's a comedy in which case there's continuous group laughter and jokes being made).

My state has two (Az). I'm in one and we perform monthly at a cosplay café, and are being asked to host cafes at bigger venues soon. It isn't bad (like I saw a few comments above post), I like our uniforms and the girls are all nice. We all have a range of interests as well so it is fun talking to customers and relating to their "geeky" hobbies (even if people do think it is/we are "weebish"). It's all in good fun and everyone works pretty hard.

Any cafes in New England, shit or not?

>> No.8036502

So I want to apply for a maid/butler cafe at a con in february, because I can't afford the entrance ticket, and they offer free lodging and everything. It's always kinda been a secret dream to run around as a maid and making people smile and shit so I thought why not.
BUT. They uploaded the application form just now, and they wrote that all the maid/butlers have to wear a yukata given by the cafe.. And also one of the questions in the form is "Do you have neko ears?" and they encourage the maids to get neko ears and such.. Now I'm a little bit.. put off.. Any thoughts or advice on this?

>> No.8036522

>>8036502
if you can't afford lodgings and tickets then go for it. it's only for a few hours, and you can be known as the quality maid if you ''forget'' your sugoi neko ears. also do some research on previous events and what they were like

Will probably be crap quality judging by those maid uniforms in the photo.

And seriously why the hell do the maids need to be wearing cat ears. That's right up there with every socially stupid person at a con with the need to wear cat ears.

I know it's gonna be crazy weebs, and all that shit. But I'm okay, I can deal with pretty much anything. Does anyone here have experience though, at serving? Like what does it actually take to do your job well?
Ex. Do you find it possible to memorize half a dozen orders off a small menu? Is there something people who haven't done it wouldn't know about being a waiter?

It really depends on the setup of the cafe. Having to jot down orders on a notepad is way different than a more modern setup where you carry around a device with Square that you can take orders with.

Any tips for someone running one at a college? My city doesn't have a maid cafe anywhere close by unless it's at a con, and some guy at my school wanted to do it at the school because it would be a cheaper thing to do since we'd get easier access to a location on campus for free that was nice. Thing is, he turned out to be a creep, I caught him on it, and he dumped it all onto me and left. So I need some tips since I've sorta made it an official club at my school. What are some things I can do to engage people in it and keep them on board for this? A lot of people started coming to the meetings, and then they all just stopped except for a select handful.

they usually fall in a categories
-normal visitors who just like atmosphere and thinks the girls are sweet (these are usually older guys and not creepy at all. they understand the struggle)
-normal tourists who just stumbles in looking around that usually comes in because of the name
-normal tourists who just comes in because they see girls in maid uniform
-more weeby tourists who looked the place up and are disappointed
-more weeby tourists who looked the place up and are excited about it
-teenager weeaboos who come with anime pins and shirts
-teenager weeaboos who come in cosplay (this doesnt happen that often but it does)
-lolitas (rare)
-itas(more common but less so than cosplaying weeaboos)
-meme shirt wearing teenagers to young adults that act like theyre on the internet
-black and spanish people arguing about dragonball z and naruto (this deserves its own category because how frequent it happens)
-card players that sit there and buy one thing an hour (theyre nice) staying 3-6 hours

the biggest ones are slimy creepers which is to be expected
