I'm planning on doing a Caliborn cosplay next year, hopefully it will turn out well.

The easiest is definitely the beta kids since they don't even require paint, but just a shirt and pants/skirt
I think the hardest to get right is HIC or one of the Cherubs, only seen 1-2 good Caliborns and one good Calliope that wasn't in her "troll OC" form.

So i've never been someone who is obsessed with yaexrae, but ever since seeing her HIC progress i'm really (and i don't know how to convey this properly) but excited? Like everytime new wips are posted i get really happy.

Pic related, apparently she's having trouble making a model for her trident head (which is going to be 3d printed). The drawn design is beautiful though.

Semi on topic, whats the best way to get something 3d printed? Buy your own? If so which one is best with size and price? I really want to experiment with 3d printing horns. Also, best 3d printed horns?

if you live in a decent sized city, look for local hackerspaces. a lot of time you can rent out time on their equipment which is way cheaper than buying your own printer.

I think there's a few online services that'll do it if you can't find local.

I've got some friends who all went in on a good sized printer together though. I received Equius horns from them as a christmas gift at a meet two weeks back. A good start, but, work on finishing cosplays instead of just more 'closet' ones. You're cute, so use that.

Your rose and roxy wigs are the same wig- get yourself a longer roxy wig, and don't just use sideswept bangs for rose. you read the comic, you know what her bangs look like.

Don't get into a habit of posting yourself on here either- people wont always respond nicely, and it'll end up doing more harm than good. Just, lurk and listen- you'll learn a lot that way.

(but yeah, don't do that with freckles. look at some ref pictures of people with real freckles before you just... poke a few dots on your cheeks with black eyeliner.)

Are you still a student? Do you blow all your spending money on eating out, vidya, etc? Do you plan ahead and use shopping strategies (joann coupons/sales, reusing stash fabric, etc)

As an adult I work a 9-5 job and cosplay is my only hobby that takes money (vs writing, digital art, watching tv) You don't have to be 'rich' to do cosplay, you just have to make choices.

Just doing effective planning can really help cutting costs. If you know what you're looking for, you can buy it instantly when you see it on sale. If you know exactly what you need to do and when it needs to be done it's much easier to take time to look around for good deals and make budgets.
Cosplaying cost efficently really isn't that hard, especially in this fandom.

Most of the people on the list are grown and have jobs, though.

Most BNFs are in that golden age between college and having major responsibilities like a family to provide for. Those that do, have well enough paying jobs to cover their hobby.

I wouldn't be surprised if many of the high output cosplayers spend a couple grand a year on their cosplays, or one grand on a really elaborate cosplay and a couple hundred here and there for the less impressive ones. When you're in your mid to late 20s and have a job, that much money isn't so hard to come by.

I'm mid twenties, work part time at a well paying job (15/h), and I'm doing my second program in college on a combo of grants, scholarships and a bit of student loan. Its about learning to cut costs, for me.

Hotel with a large group of people, buy a badge only when you have to, share supplies and help with friends and they'll share back. If you can alter a thrift find for a cosplay instead of making something entirely yourself, do it and save the 20 bucks. Shop at the fabric stores that are friendly and will give you personal deals on things, or stick to the clearance section and plan ahead. Can't afford an Arda wig but need the thickness? Get two cheap ebay wigs, sew them together.

I've also been doing this since highschool, so, a lot of it comes with learning from accidentally overspending your first few times.

I attend a 'big' con about every 3 months, and hit 'little' local ones in between. It's busy, but I don't really spend money on drinks/going out otherwise, so its manageable.

Kind of echoing what anons have said above. I've graduated university and am working full-time (though my appointment's over in Februaryish, so I won't have a steady income soon).

Starting sewing is expensive! It takes a while before you build up a hoard of notions (elastic, trims, snaps, buttons, thread), fabric, all ten glues, foam, etc. That's part of the reason early cosplays will cost more.

I used to overbuy and buy poor-quality materials at high cost (my first few cosplays were $200-300). Thrift stores are a BOON - you can find yards of fabric or clothes to cannibalise for their fabric. I made a large, trimmed overtunic out of $7 of thrifted fabric (plus interfacing) and had enough to make a second parka. Always try to go to a thrift store first before hitting up a fabric store.

Keep an Excel file of your expenditures. I aim to not spend more than $100-150 per cosplay if I can (only successful about half the time right now), and if I'm approaching that limit on a wip, it's time to think of other ways to do things.

I only attend local events (two-hour drive max) and never stay in a hotel. I tried doing a convention once without a badge, and that was stressful, so I buy my badge ahead of time and spend almost nothing at the con itself.

Also, you're not allowed to have other hobbies (or at least ones that cost money and great chunks of time). Friends going to the bars? Stay home and sew. You might drop $40 in three hours on the town, or you could drop $40 on material and be occupied for eight hours.

I got the Hero of Heart hoodie last year and wore it for a good chunk of the winter. It pilled up super quickly, and sorta faded. I've gotten a few other GodTier shirts (Light/Breath) etc, and they were fine. I've also got a Topatoco Jade shirt, and it's simple, but very nice and holds up remarkably well.

Their prints are really nice. I've got three, all in frames. I was really amazed by the weight of the paper and lushness of the color. They're like super high quality art prints you get from galleries.

The calendar is a bit flimsy. It's also a bizarre size. I just put mine up and I had to move the nails on my wall; it's the same width as a standard calendar, but shorter.

The Hot Topic shirt is shit. No surprises there. I kinda got guilted into buying it by the really fucking cute girls that work there, but the print is really pixelated, nasty, and the fabric thin. I managed to get it during a buy-1-get-1, so at least I got it with a thicker, better Sailor Moon shirt.

I also had a friend snag one of WP's con shirts for me. They're TINY. I don't know if mine just had the misfortune of being mismarked, but holy shit, it's small. Other folks I know who got con shirts said they were kinda a shitty quality. Some were like, iron-on tier.

I picked up a decal recently, they're nice, but the colors are kinda bright. (May have had to do with the vinyl they get, who knows? I don't mind on mine.)

Their metalwork stuff is really nice, the kickstarter keychain and their little pins. They're super hardy and resilient. I've had the SBURB keyring on my keys for a year, getting all kind of abuse, and it looks brand new.

My friends have the official Scalemates. They're actually super-well-made and soft. I dunno if I could justify dropping that kinda money on them, since I don't cosplay Pyropes, but they're cute.

What I get from all of this is that WP/WLF/Topatoco's quality is really wildly different, and even then can be wonky. Aside from the HT/WLF collab, WLF's stuff has been well-made and nice. I'll chalk it up to it being HT's manufacturer and probably their specifications to keep costs for HT down.

What Pumpkin's quality seems all over the map. I think they probably get manufacturers from everywhere and some are better than others. Like the GT t-shirts v. the hoodies /zip hoodies. A company like WLF is big enough to manage their own manufacturers and pull quality control, but WP is small enough they're probably kind of taking them as they come, which makes them super inconsistent.

Has anyone gotten the vinyl toys? I'd like a Jade or a John (the rest are super wonky and weird looking to me). Do they feel cheap?

Just to add to the list, I have two of the welovefine shirts and they're nice and soft, so far have held up through a handful of washes. I agree that the metalwork is great - love my keychain charms - I'm less impressed with the Signless necklace though. It looks very nice but for $20 I expected it to have more weight to it. It feels either hollow or like it's made of aluminum.

The tarot cards are beautiful but I feel like I got tricked into paying way too much money for them, since the tarot organizer said they'd be exclusive to the kickstarter and now they're charging 25 bucks. I can't imagine how the people who shelled out $250 for a stalemate must feel.

Ah, yeah, I've got the cards too, but they were a gift. They're a bit dark, given the print quality, but they're beautiful. Fun to do readings with at meetups and stuff too.

I wish they'd rerelease the SBURB keyring or make a SGRUB one.

I do feel like it was a bit of a jip to say they were exclusive and release them later, but I think they figured it was long enough that they couldn't get too butthurt about it.

I would do some kinda compromise, my legs look shit without some kind of heel, so I usually wear small wedges or inserts, even inside my sneakers. Most shoe stores have them. I think even places like Forever 21 and so on have them too. The trick is sometimes they have a lot of shit on them or are enormously jacked up. I just got online and looked up "hidden wedge sneaker" to find some that were plain without a huge heel.

I'd go with an insert; that way if later in the con you get sick of them, you can take them out.

I've seen people do this and it doesn't look good. This style is clearly meant for ear jewelry vs actual cosplay where a highly visible lobe like that and obvious threads would look silly. I once knew a girl who cosplayed both Eridan and Cronus, and was absolutely bonkers. She would get hyperposessive over people/friends and threw hissy fits when someone broke up with her/didn't want to date her. She actually made one of MY friends threaten to hurt me if she killed herself, even though all I did was tell her I wasn't interested in her. Haven't talked to either of them since because I have no time for that manipulative shit.
I don't know if she still cosplays them because I haven't seen her in ages, but other people have told me they had similar experiences.

Because when i look at this all i see is every aspect of girls cosplaying as guys that makes the photo look weird in my eye.
Overshopped/over-makeup'd skin that looks like plastic, lips the same colour as their skin (weirds me the hell out, but common enough that it should not), terrible fake eyebrows,
...and lastly that facial expression. I don't get it, but when i see a bad crossplay photo its like this weird smirk or slight kissy face. Like they're trying to say "My cocky expression makes me seem more like a man".
