So I've been wanting to get into this style, since I don't think Lolita suits me as much.

I like the muted tones, the earthy feel... the fact it actually makes me think of a girl walking into the woods from a fairy tale or something.

On a side note, I actually go on walks in the woods a lot... used to go mushroom hunting with my grandparents as a kid even. That's what it makes me think of... but with a more girly, fanciful spin on the old times I spent getting my shoes muddy and knee scraped from tripping over my boots.

Any thoughts?

I love the mori girl ideology and completely agree with this. Its mysterious and whimsical and in an idealised enchanted forest. I dont like the clothes so much but I always aim for the look of a girl living in a whimsical forest.

I've been looking to find more clothes in the style, but it's harder to come across stuff like this than it looks. I've seen pages on finding most things in thrift stores and actually sewing your own outfits... But I can't sew, that's for sure. Are there any specific brands, even?

IMO, the Tumblr mori girl scene has completely changed the perception of this fashion in recent years. Of course there are brands, these clothes obviously have to come from somewhere. But I rarely see them talked about anymore because it's all "thrift everything!" and "sew your own stuff!" now. (Not to say that this isn't good advice, most of my wardrobe is thrifted as I also can't sew. But I definitely don't think it's as fun to discuss and it makes it hard for new people to get a grasp on the style because there's nothing concrete to point to.) It also pains me to see everything else reduced to "I don't know, just look at Taobao."

Anyway, 4chan seems to think my links are spam, so Google "mori girl checklist," "mori girl blogspot" and "gohalainn scans" and I think that'll get you off to a good start. Good luck and I hope you have fun exploring.

I think its been slowly picking up in western fashion as well, at least elements of it, so you might be able to find some stuff at the local mall. I'm chubby (about 25 pounds overweight) and have big tits as well...my best advice is to not layer more than two pieces anywhere and/or keep your layers thin. I usually only wear one layer unless it's cold out, like a dress or boxy top with baggy pants, and focus more on accessorizing/hair/makeup. A lot of thinner girls can just pile like 5 layers on and look good but I look so chunky when I try to do that.

I'm 5'9" and usually need sleeves to be at least 60cm long to adequately cover my wrists. I love the slouchy sweater look like in forestgirlfans shop, but most of the items have sleeves around 55cm. I would expect the fit to be quite a bit tighter as their model is super tiny, but I don't want a wrist gap.

If anyone like >>7974572 has bought from these shops: does the oversized fit tend to add length to the sleeves, like from the shoulders slouching down? Or should I just avoid anything outside of my arm length? Other than the length of my limbs, my measurements are pretty standard for sizing (84/64/90)

Unfortunately I can't be much help as I'm 5ft, but do remember that your shoulder width takes up some of that sleeve length as well. I have fairly wide shoulders (43cm) so any sleeve under 60cm will be a bit short on me.

The beginning of mori is pretty well documented. Some (Japanese) girl posted a selfie on her blog (minxi? idk). Her friend said "lel, looks like you just crawled out of a forest, noob", to which the selfie girl retorted, "alright, forest girl fashion it is then" and then someone wrote up this long manifesto of how forest/morigirl clothes should be comfy and such and what mori is and so on. I think the translated list is still up somewhere on lj''s morigirl comm, along with the (joke) swampgirl list.

Fashion would've died a quiet death for being so obscure but then some magazine (spoon) picked it up and did a special issue of it). Liz Lisa followed up with a moriGYARU style one season. Lolitas did morigirl crossovers.

The fashion has been hobbling along ever since, not really dying, not really reaching gyaru- or lolita-tier popularity either.

My country is actually really cashing in on the whole folk hippie/muh heritage thing right now, and Pan-Slavism is getting really big here.

IVKO does amazing jackets and cardigans with beautiful designs. I stop by their shop all the time and they churn out new things pretty regularly, but afaik the only way to get things from them is either online or by visiting their shop in Belgrade.
I have a jacket/cardi from here if you want to see it.

I thought the first look was much cuter, it just isn't really mori. I think the issue is mori tends to focus on layers of floaty neutrals. It helps to be tiny and petite, as clothes will naturally tend to be baggy on you, but a long trapeze sweater can do wonders for a look.

The legwarmers with bare feet in ballet flats is really off putting. You either need boots or to put some socks on. Heck, do both. Put on a scarf or wear a shawl over the top. I think the colors are a bit too dreary to every be a true mori look, but it can still be a cute outfit

At the moment this just looks like normalfag wear sorry.
Usually what I notice is that though mori is full of muted colors, there's always a item that provides a pop of color or at least a focal point. You want some varying textures and colors, that's what makes the fashion so interesting. Right now, your colors are so drab, and there's nothing really interesting about your outfit.

What I think you could do to make it remotely mori, I'm guessing you want to keep the sweater since it's cute, is a longer drapey skirt in a warm color, like a warm brown or copper red, not too bright because it'll look gaudy, and a long cardigan in a light color, maybe with shorter , loose sleeves so you can see that plaid on your arms.
I don't think the leggings/flats combo is very cute or flattering. What would be a lot cuter is boots like what other people have suggested.

>>7991077
This is decent, though I'm not sure about the flower brooch in the middle, it makes things too...symmetrical? Maybe if you could wear the shawl pinned lopsided it would look more interesting. I also feel that your colors/shade are too uniform as well though, maybe an item in a lighter gray/white would really complete it, even if it's just loose socks/legwarmers along with your foot wear.

Maxi skirts, especially "petal" or tiered maxis with interesting amounts of volume.

Chunky knits like scarves, armwarmers, gloves, legwarmers, boot socks, shawls, etc.

Flowy vintage blouses, especially tunic style ones.

Cute warm sweatshirts that are a bit more cutesy than standard hoodies but that you may have in your closet right now.

Flat or nearly flat boots, especially vintage look styles with lace up. "justin" or "roper" boots from etsy are amazing tier.

Straw hats in summer.

Artificial flower hairclips or broaches.

Fairisle anything or "cute animal" trend items that are popular now with hedgehogs, foxes, deer, etc. will generally work well with mori. So will mushrooms, wood carved accessories, etc.

I think it's the same for dark mori as far as clothing items go, just in neutral colors.

For theme'd accessories though, I imagine things that have to do with the "darker" side of nature might do, like not-as-cute mushrooms and animal skulls. I don't think themes are that important though, imo we shouldn't really make it into a borderline costume-y thing like people like to do to lolita.

Your leg wear choices are pretty poor, I would wear moccassin and socks only with loose pants, not leggings and a skirt. If you want to wear a skirt with that sweater, it would preferably be a longer one, but if not at least wear tights or OTK and sleeker shoes, like mary janes or oxfords. Leggings and short skirt with flats screams "department store american girl" fashion to me rather than j-fash.

Compare your outfit to the bottom right of >>7991015. They are going for a more youthful almost bordering of himekaji look, which is why the short skirt works. But since your look is "heavier" the short skirt doesn't match as well.

The leggings I ordered are coming in the mail still, so I'll have to wait to switch it but I can do the otk's.

As for the shoes, I don't get much choice because of my fucking gigantic feet. But I do own a pair of oxfords, from payless..sadly. Big feet problems.
It's freezing out so I definitely can't wear tights until spring.
If anyone has some mary janes that are brown that fit size 10.5-11 please link because I've looked at several websites and I can't find a good pair... silly since it's such a simple shoe, I know.
I'll try making some adjustments though, your suggestions are great, so thank you! I'll try to switch it up and post it!

I like the mori look but i think a more casual, simple style with knee/above knee length skirts would suit me better rather than lots of layers and long skirts. Also, i don't look good in muted/dusty tones. Going for only red/white and no brown shoes or bags for example is acceptable? Navy/blue combo? Or i'm going into otome territory?
Pic related, i like these tops a lot. But i think an OP dress in gingham would fit me better.

I see nothing wrong with using those colors. The creator of the style, Choco used lots of color in her outfits. Mori style is not all beige, brown and white. Knee length skirts and one-piece dresses are also ok.
Also you really don't have to use tons of layers, and can keep your style simple.
However, don't forget to at least accessorize (with scarves, hair clips, brooches, tights etc) to give your outfits a more complete look.

Not sure where its from but it looks really simple to make if you wanted to try. The trickiest part would be the gather in the middle of the neck and that's just making it wider there and gathering it down.

I only wear mori girl during the spring and summer, because I lean towards the more mori gyaru style of mori girl with the lighter beige and floral fabrics and layering. I have incorporated items from axes femme, lolita brands, stuff from yahoo auction's japan and thrift finds to make my coords. Even though I have been a mori girl longer than a lolita, that idea of relying on certain brands to make a coord influences a lot on what I wear. Consider me uninspired for doing this if you will. I have been a mori girl since 2011 and have come to accept that it has now become a hodgepodge of many things including the fawn makeup and introduction to "dark mori girl." It's very plain and I don't really get mori from it too much as it stands. The shoes are not good (I thought they were some kind of weird house slippers, actually). My advice is tights rather than legwarmers, and your top area looks pretty bare which is a pet peeve for me in mori. Look at the coords posted in this thread and see how they tend to avoid big patches of plain exposed skin on top by creating interest with jewelry or a scarf.

Other people will probably be able to give you better suggestions, but that's just what jumped out at me for now.

If they're no good then I was planning on buying ankle height ones similar to a lot of ones itt anyways.

Definitely plan on buying more tights! Thanks for that suggestion, will try some out when I can.

What's going on with factory made/manufactured looking pieces becoming more common in mori recently, I tend away from explicitly factory-looking things in my outfits because it breaks the illusion of old-fashioned, thrifty, woods dweller/wood witch but things like obtrusive zippers, blue jeans, clearly machine embroidery etc are all appearing in magazine spreads and people's coords more and more? There's nothing wrong with mori utilizing brown, grey and black (some good examples posted unpthread, but I don't think anon was knowledgeable since a few things in their dump were so utterly non mori). The problem with most of the stuff in #dark mori and other posting locations is that a) so much of it is literally just normal outfit which contained one or two dark pieces and isn't at all mori or even dark b) even the layered outfits are often COMPLETELY BLACK and lack balance or visual interest; c) the actual theme of "mori" is often lost. Also don't get what's up with that catbus girl or how she gets notes.

But to rag on the whole concept of dark mori for it is like doing the same to gothic lolita and kuro lolita just because it's the style that probably has the most itas aspiring to it (I think. Not a loli, have no clue -- but the popularity of the term "gothic lolita" as an aphorism for the whole style makes me thing this.)

Apparently 'actually-mori dark mori' can be alternatively referred to as numa, but it's not like that's a viable tag, for obvious reasons.

>> No.8018282

>>8018269
No, numa is not a style, let alone a term for Japanese dark mori ("dark" interpretations of the fashion are fairly uncommon in Japan to begin with). It's a self-deprecating mindset that some Japanese mori girls adopted to poke fun at the "mori girls should have a clean, pure aura or aspire to it" part of Choco's mori girl checklist.

I'm beginning to think we need a FAQ or something because there are just so many things that get covered in every thread but forgotten by the time the next one rolls around.

no where in my comment did i say dark colors are incompatible with mori girl.

and your comparison with kuro lolita and gothic lolita makes no sense. "dark mori girl" was a term coined by some broad on tumblr by the name of shortcuttothestars, trying to copy choco's original mori girl checklist. thing is she clearly barely has any grasp on mori girl and every pic ive seen of it is just bohemian goth. cant even get the 'bare makeup' thing right.

kuro lolita and gothic lolita are legitimate sub fashion styles of lolita. gothic lolita is backed by brands catering to that style, and kuro lolita (and shiro lolita) are basically offshoots.

dark mori girl is like bittersweet lolita; coined by idiots who no grasp on the fashion they belong to

and to finish this rant i hate the very little talk of brands. explains why western mori girl is so off base. you need a reference point from the experts.

Anon, as from my post above (I am not the dark mori girl commenter) I buy a lot of my stuff from overseas and I can tell you that there are not a lot of mori brands. Mori will never work like lolita when it comes to brand. Even if you point out wonder rocket, grimoire (more dolly kei) or the taobao brands, that requires people to order overseas. Unlike lolita, mori girls aren't going to that. Western mori girls revel in the find of items and not the purchase. Finally, lolita has a thriving second hand market with girls willing to buy brand. I rarely see the second hand mori girl market when selling brand successful. The mindset is handmade/thrift > brand in mori girl. For lolita it is always handmade/thrift < brand

>> No.8019620

eh, i guess I'm just annoyed overall because thrifting is a skillset on its own and people dont know theyre looking for, and would rather have mori girl be a mix of brand and thrifted/handmade stuff. i actually dont have any mori girl brand clothing yet even though the tone of my comments heavily imply that. all my mori girl clothing are thrifted, but even then i dont think its up to task. I'm honestly hoping to use my thrift finds with actual mori girl pieces when i eventually buy them

i know mori girl wont function like lolita. i dont expect it to, which drew me to it in the first place. my issue is how very little overall brands are discussed overall because by extension theres no reference point. lolita has the lolita handbook as a guideline. while there is choco's checklist, it focuses more on lifestyle things

Some active Japanese mori brands I'm aware of:
W Closet**
Felissimo/Syrup** (they also ship overseas offically)
Niko and...**
Cube Sugar**
Earth Music & Ecology**
SM2 (Samantha Moss)**
Crisp**
Par Avion**
Franche Lippee**
Wonder Rocket
Carolina Glasser
Marble SUD
Cawaii**
Nashare**
Favorite One**
Lowrys Farm**
Studio Clip**

Pieces from this brand can be found on taobao**

Personally, I like to buy brand pieces (from taobao, rakuten) and find ways to mix them with western clothing that fits the aesthetic.
Kanful on rakuten is a good place to buy brand pieces for reasonable prices.

Their "Exact size search or search by size" is very helpful.

Is he so cold that he needs to wear 2 pairs of slacks??? just seems a bit ridiculous. I think it would look better with something like knit leggings or something along those lines rather than a second pair of pants.

Are there any forums for mori girl resale? I've decided that traditional mori (light colors) doesn't really suit me, so I have a stack of stuff I'm getting rid of, but I'm not sure if it's worth trying to post anywhere or if I should just dump it at Goodwill.

See if this works. Of course you will have to be logged in on on facebook to see it. I can't put the full link but type facebook.com and then put behind it /groups/592150677518096/

You can also search for the group in facebook.

You could always angle it more outwards to make the a-line more exaggerated, but yeah the gathers oddly change the shape a lot. Its like those half-pintucked blouses where the bottom suddenly billows out, its a surprising amount of fabric hidden in there.

I'd say, add another light but long top under the sweater (maybe those drapey pointy ones? I dont know the name for them), a longer skirt or maybe layered skirts, tights, and different boots. I saw you say your other boots are more military looking, so consider maybe adding cute spats like pic related? It would help tie in the knit theme and they're pretty easy to find online (i googled "knit spats") plus they're fucking cozy over more open dressy shoes during cold weather.

You're freaking cute which is a massive bonus but outfit-wise it's a little lacking tbh, it's not bad but lacks that 'mori' feel. I'd recommend adding another longer skirt in any shade from off-white to beige for that layered silhouette and a cute long pendant. Flat brown or tan lace-up ankle boots would be a nice match for this and a bag perhaps too.

Thank you so much!
It actually isn't a skirt (I thought it was when I bought it off a taobao shop) They're shorts. I bought it from a mori themed store. The rest of the outfit was on my own, (Clothing bought in America)

I don't have any beige skirts yet, but I'll definitely keep my eye out for one.

Ah ok, no matter that they're shorts, they're cute anyway. I would still recommend adding in a bit more detail though in the form of some tights/socks with a bit of texture or pattern detail. Also another tip, jumpers like the one you're wearing are very rarely worn on their own without a light peter pan style blouse underneath; one such as in pic attached could really help to pull everything together. Even if you don't go for a blouse, a top or t-shirt with a cute collar would be a good bet I think.
