Has anyone ever built a suit of armor for cosplay here. Not worbla or plastic. Metal armor, it doesnt have to be tempered but was wondering how many people tried here.

It would take you a lot of time depending on how good you are, what your willing to spend for materials and how much time you're willing to put into it. I was a silver smithing apprentice-- hopefully will be learning to blacksmithing next year also. I hung out with the guys at the forge and it took em awhile to make big stuff like statues, it's more of having to let it cool, file and heat up is the pain in the ass time consuming part. And considering how much armor is meticulous as fuck depending on how much designing and shit you want to put into it..
If you don't know HOW to smith then don't even bother asking someone to do it for you unless you're willing to drop 3-10k easy depending how much you want done. You'd be better of learning HOW to smith for a few years then try making simpler things like helmets ect. Even then it takes years to get REALLY good at it.

Since this is on topic, have a 7 part book series on building your own metal foundry. http://1drv.ms/1u0GTVi

Keep in mind if you're doing this, its going to be hot and tiring as hell.
That said >>7931176
has the right idea, unless you're already a blacksmith with a forge and shit, you'll be putting down quite a bit of money and time for this.

You may want to ask the LARP thread.

Someone was posting metal armour in the progress thread a little while back, I think it was for Rhaegar Targaryen. It looked really cool but I don't think they posted the finished product?

I have made armor for people your size. It's easier than you think. With proper tempering you don't even need anything more than 18 ga steel and a full plate harness can be made that weighs in under 40 to 50 pounds.

In fact that is my suit on the right side of OP's picture. apart from the helmet the entire thing weighs less than 60 pounds and it's all fighting rated.

The only place where armor weight adds an advantage is in the helm. more mass means that it is harder to move the helm with a hit. A 10 or 12 pound helm is not uncommon. However with tempering and thinner steel it has the same rigidity and protection for half the weight and thickness. downside being that you feel the hits a little more.

The only issue i have with cosplay and anime armor is most of it is over sized to the point where making it in metal is downright unpractical. It follows the rule of cool and not functional stuff.

If I'm taking the time and money to hammer out a suit than part of me cringes at the thought of it being "just for show.

Anyone have any examples of, somewhat realistic anime armor that would be recognized?

Yes. All the time.

There are several of us who are professional armourers (as in, making a living off of it) and SCA/WMA/BotN/ACL combatants in the larp threads.

Don't let the larp part fool you, we just use it as a blanket for medieval martial arts, recreation and reenactment, as well as roleplaying.

most armor's in berserk are functional as the author studied them a little. Although there are a few exceptions of course.

Apart from that I can't recall anything famous that has realistic armor in it. Although I don't watch that much anime either
